Parnell readies for Worcestershire bow ahead of home summer

South Africa allrounder Wayne Parnell will play for Worcestershire until mid-September in both the Vitality Blast and County Championship first division as part of his preparation for the home summer.Parnell recently returned to action from a shoulder injury that had sidelined him since the start of the year. He finished as the top wicket-taker for the Edmonton Royals at the Global T20 in Canada, with six wickets from six matches at 22.50.”It was encouraging to be back again after the long layoff and finishing as the leading wicket-taker was good,” Parnell said. “My goal is to get Worcestershire to the quarter-final of their T20 league and also to keep them in the first division, as they are currently in last place.”Parnell will be available for the remaining six Vitality Blast group matches and the knockouts, and four of the remaining six county championship matches. He will return to South Africa to play for his domestic franchise, Cobras, and has made himself available across all formats. “I fully believe in my unique skill set and I back my ability with bat and ball to contribute to Worcestershire and the Cape Cobras’ cause,” Parnell said.Whether that will be enough to see Parnell back in contention for the South African squad and for the World Cup next year, is a matter of speculation. Parnell lost his national contract ahead of the 2018-19 season and has not played international cricket since a Test against Bangladesh in October, at home, last year.

Aston Villa: NSWE find breakthrough and seal teenager transfer agreement

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of a young talent after finalising a training compensation agreement to bring an exciting teenage midfielder to the West Midlands.

What's the latest news involving Aston Villa?

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are contemplating cutting ties with kit manufacturer Castore due to issues regarding the quality of the shirts provided and their tendency to weigh players down in-game.

Members of both the men's and women's teams have complained about the product and the outlet now indicate that the Villans could be willing to look elsewhere to secure a new kit deal, with their current one believed to be worth around £4 million per season. Premier League side Newcastle United and Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers have also had complications relating to the standard of their team wear.

In other news, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins is in talks over signing a new long-term deal at his current employers as his current terms are set to expire in the summer of 2025, as per BBC Sport.

Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with a swoop for the England international over the last few weeks; nevertheless, discussions are believed to be 'progressing' and Villans' boss Unai Emery views the former Brentford ace as a key component of his plans moving forward at Villa Park.

Watkins has been a superb asset for Aston Villa since joining for a fee in the region of an initial £28 million back in 2020 and has gone on to deliver 47 goals and 15 assists in 126 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

His last outing came on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup for Aston Villa against Everton, though the visitors ran out 2-1 victors in a disappointing evening for Emery's men.

Who have Aston Villa signed?

Port Vale's official website has confirmed that youngster Freddie Lawrie is on his way to Aston Villa after the Premier League outfit reached a breakthrough over training compensation for the teen midfielder.

Speaking about his time at the Valiants, Lawrie stated: "I’ve really enjoyed my time here and I think I’ve improved a lot. It’s thanks to Danny Lloyd and the other coaching staff that I’ve had the opportunities I have, they have given me the chance to play the games and also play up an age group, and because of that, I’ve now got this chance."

Unai Emery

Lawrie, who is a central midfielder by trade, has had interest from a number of clubs in his signature over the last few months; however, he has chosen to join Aston Villa and will hope to follow a similar trajectory to the likes of Jack Grealish, Carney Chukwumeka and Jacob Ramsey by securing a first-team breakthrough.

Cited by Birmingham Live, Port Vale's head of academy Will Ryder has given his best wishes to Lawrie, saying: "This is an unbelievable opportunity for Freddie, he is now going to get the opportunity to go to a category one club and be in and around an Premier League environment as he continues his development."

NSWE have involved themselves in trying to improve the structure of Aston Villa's academy since taking over and the addition of Lawrie could prove to be another step in the right direction for everyone connected with the club.

Herath may retire from international cricket in November

Rangana Herath may retire from international cricket in November, following the three-match Test series against England. Provided he plays every Sri Lanka Test until then, he will finish five Tests short of 100.Herath had earlier retired from the shorter formats in order to lengthen his Test career, but now, aged 40, he believed it was time to consider stepping away from all formats.”Maybe my final series will be the England series later in the year,” he told . “Following this South Africa series, there is another three months until the England series. For now, this is what I’ve planned for. There comes a time for every cricketer, when they have to stop playing. I think that time has come for me.”Herath is the most successful left-arm bowler in Tests, having taken 418 wickets. He is the last remaining international cricketer to have played in the 1990s, having made his debut in September 1999. It was only after 2009, however, that his Sri Lanka career truly took off. More than 90% of his wickets have come in the last nine years of his career.Graphic: Rangana Herath is currently the left-arm bowler with the most Test wickets•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“I’m really glad I’ve been able to play as long as I have,” Herath said. “But the most important thing is that of those 18 years, I wasn’t able to play for Sri Lanka for about seven of those years. I’m proud of what I was able to do in those seven years – the training I did, and the desire I had, especially.”Herath also said he would talk with Sri Lanka’s coach and captain following the South Africa series, before finalising his plans. He believed Sri Lanka’s spin bowling would be in good hands following his retirement, with Dilruwan Perera around as an experienced spinner, alongside younger bowlers such as Akila Dananjaya and Lakshan Sandakan.

Chelsea vs Brighton: Head-to-head record, key stats & more

Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion have been playing one another on and off ever since their initial meeting in 1933, but have never played one another in the League Cup – something that's set to change as the Blues host their south coast competitors in a third round clash on Wednesday night.

With that in mind, Football FanCast has everything you need to know before the Carabao Cup clash gets underway this week.

We might only be into the second month of the new season, but with both teams having already played seven games in all competitions, we now have a good idea of their form and playstyle going into the game.

For the hosts, the beginning of this season has just been more of the same from last year – worse even. The Blues have had their worst start to a season since the 1978/79 campaign under new boss Mauricio Pochettino and currently find themselves down in 14th in the league after just one win, two draws and three defeats.

They did beat AFC Wimbledon in the second round of the League Cup to reach this upcoming game, but it was just their second home win of the season thus far, with their first being a 3-0 win over Premier League new boys Luton Town. Can Pochettino kickstart Chelsea's campaign with a home win against the high-flying Brighton?

The Seagulls, on the other hand, have had an unbelievable start to the new campaign, finding themselves all the way up in third place following their fifth win of the league season over AFC Bournemouth on the weekend.

Their place in the table is not just down to good fortune, either. They are currently the league's top scorers with 18 goals thanks to big wins over Manchester United, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That said, they did slip up against AEK Athens during the week, but considering their domestic form, that might have more to do with the pressure of being in Europe than anything else.

Chelsea vs Brighton: What's their head-to-head record?

Counting just their competitive matches, Chelsea and Brighton have only played 20 times in the 90 years since their first meeting 90 years ago. The reason that the clubs have played so few games against one another in the ensuing nine decades is primarily due to Brighton's absence from the top flight of English football.

When they did face each other, it has more often than not been the Blues that have come away victorious, winning 13 out of 20. For their part, the Seagulls have won just three games, drawing the remaining five.

That said, while the numbers unquestionably show that Chelsea have dominated this fixture over the years, Brighton have been far more competitive in recent years – remaining undefeated in the last five.

Chelsea vs Brighton: What's their FA Cup record?

With their upcoming clash coming in the League Cup, how have the sides historically fared when coming up against each other in cup competitions?

Well, it probably won't come as a huge surprise to hear that Chelsea's general dominance in this fixture over the years has also translated into a dominance in cup games. The teams haven't played one another in the League Cup before, but in their four FA Cup meetings, the Blues have emerged victorious twice, whereas the Seagulls have won just once.

There was a draw when the sides faced off in the fourth round in the 1966/67 season, but Chelsea comfortably won the replay 4-0.

Will Roberto De Zerbi be able to improve his side's cup fortunes when the whistle goes on Wednesday evening?

Chelsea vs Brighton: What's their Premier League record?

Sorry, Seagulls fans, your record in the Premier League against Chelsea still isn't great. In fact, the south coast club have won just two of their 12 games in the top flight against the Blues, drawing four and losing the remaining six.

That said, their two wins have come in their last two games, and three of their four draws came in the games before that – so they're certainly the more in-form team when it comes to the rivalry at the moment.

Chelsea vs Brighton: What's their Second Division record?

While there is a positive way to look at the Premier League results for Brighton fans, there certainly isn't when it comes to the Second Division.

Chelsea have a 100% win rate when it comes to second-tier games against Brighton, and by quite some margin as well, with the aggregate score for the games being 6-1 in favour of the Blues.

That said, the last time the sides met in the second tier was back in March 1989, so we aren't sure how much we can really read into that. It certainly shows how far each side has come in the years since.

Chelsea vs Brighton: What's their record at Stamford Bridge?

Again, it's not a huge surprise to see that when the games are played at Stamford Bridge, it's Chelsea that comfortably come out on top in the majority of games.

In fact, the Blues have won six of the nine games in which they have played host over the years, drawing two and losing just one, which is a pretty impressive record regardless of the opponent.

The aggregate score at the Bridge is currently 16-3 in favour of the hosts – can De Zerbi influence that come Wednesday?

Chelsea vs Brighton: What's their record at Brighton?

It's Chelsea who ultimately come out on top in this fixture, even when it's Brighton's turn to play host.

Unfortunately for Seagulls fans, the Blues have left their ground as victors six times over the years, which gives them a win rate of 54.5% away from home. For their part, the home side have won just two games when playing host to the west Londoners, drawing the remaining three.

Chelsea vs Brighton: Which team has the most goals?

A much better record in a fixture usually comes with a much better goal record as well, and that's certainly the case here.

In all, there have been 50 goals in 20 games in this fixture, meaning that, on average, fans can expect to see 2.5 goals per game when these two sides meet, with a lot more of those goals coming from Chelsea.

The Blues have found the back of the net 35 times against Brighton, meaning they tend to score 1.75 per game. The Seagulls, on the other hand, have scored just 15 goals against the Pensioners, giving them a paltry 0.75 goals per game over the course of this fixture thus far.

That said, with the way Brighton have been playing over the last few seasons, we expect that number to rise significantly over the coming years.

Chelsea vs Brighton: What happened last season?

So far, this preview has been pretty bleak reading for Brighton supporters, but here is where things start to look a lot better, as the recent history of this fixture is one that unquestionably favours the Seagulls.

For example, last season was the first time the south coast side completed the double over their opponents from the capital, beating them home and away by an aggregate score of 6-2.

The first game took place at the Amex in October and saw the home side go three goals up before Kai Havertz pulled one back for the Blues, only for Pascal Gross to add a fourth for Brighton in the 90th minute, completing his side's dominant win over a team that was then managed by former Brighton (and Chelsea) manager Graham Potter.

The second fixture was a little closer, though, and required a comeback from the travelling team after Conor Gallagher put Chelsea 1-0 up in the 13th minute. Not ones to be disheartened, the Seagulls levelled in the 42nd minute through Danny Welbeck and took the lead on 69 minutes thanks to a superb strike from Julio Enciso, eventually winning 2-1.

Chelsea vs Brighton: What is Chelsea's biggest win?

With so many wins under their belt in this fixture, it only makes sense that the Blues have also thumped the Seagulls a few times in the past, and with two 4-0 wins to their name against them, they certainly have.

The first one came in the fourth round of the FA Cup in February 1967. It was a home tie, and the home fans certainly got their money's worth as their team scored four goals to no reply through Tony Hateley, Allan Young and a brace from Bobby Tambling.

The second time the Blues scored four and kept a clean sheet was in a Premier League game in January 2018. It was an away game this time, with Eden Hazard grabbing a brace and Willian and Victor Moses scoring a goal each at the Amex.

Chelsea vs Brighton: What is Brighton's biggest win?

With only three wins to their name in this tie, you wouldn't expect the Seagulls to have any big wins against Chelsea, but that's not the case.

Brighton's biggest win over the Blues came last season, and it was their 4-1 home win mentioned earlier. The scoring was opened just five minutes in as Leandro Trossard found the back of the net with some excellent close control. The hosts' lead was doubled just nine minutes later as Ruben Loftus-Cheek put the ball into his own net after failing to clear a cross.

The Seagulls saw their lead reach three on the stroke of half-time through another own goal as Trevoh Chalobah poked a low cross into his own net as he tried to clear it. Chelsea did get one goal back through Havertz in the 48th minute, but a fourth Brighton goal from Pascal Gross secured all three points for the home side.

Chelsea vs Brighton: What are the recent results?

While the fixture overall undoubtedly belongs to Chelsea, you wouldn't know if you just looked at the last five encounters.

The recent story of this game is one of draws and Brighton dominance, as the south coast club have won two of the last five and drawn the other three. The aggregate score from the previous five games is 8-4 in favour of Brighton, and even more worryingly for the Blues is that three of those games have been at Stamford Bridge.

With the form of the teams at the moment, it certainly wouldn't be surprising to see Brighton further increase their recent dominance in this fixture.

Chelsea vs Brighton: When is it?

Chelsea host Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday 27th September at 7.45pm, and while the fixture isn't a staple of English football, it has regularly produced exciting games in recent years, and there is no reason it won't do that again.

Both sides' contrasting fortunes and ambitions promise to make this an exciting game you don't want to miss. For the hosts, they need to get their season back on track as soon as possible, and a home tie against one of the most exciting teams in the league could be the perfect opportunity to do so, especially if the Seagulls rest one or two starters ahead of their league game at Aston Villa on Saturday lunchtime.

For Brighton, the game represents another opportunity to firmly establish themselves as one of the best teams in the country, and most importantly, the League Cup could be one of the best opportunities they have to go out and win a trophy this year. So, who knows, De Zerbi might opt to field a full-strength XI for this one.

In all, this should be a cracking cup clash.

Aston Villa: Emery missed out on £30m sensation, he’s now better than McGinn

Aston Villa enjoyed a successful summer in the transfer window, as Unai Emery and Monchi navigated the direction of the funds to welcome five new faces to Villa Park.

The Spanish duo broke the club’s record transfer fee in the process, securing their primary target in Moussa Diaby for a price of £51.9m from Bayer Leverkusen.

Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres, Nicolo Zaniolo and Clement Lenglet also made the Midlands their new homes, with all five of Villa’s acquisitions having the potential to make a significant improvement to the squad.

Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby.

Despite capturing the signatures of the new arrivals, Emery and Monchi were linked with a host of other names, with some deals not prevailing that could have made the side even better.

From Jadon Sancho to Ansu Fati, the Villans were named as a club interested in some of the best talents in Europe, with one player signing for an alternative Premier League side in a deal that has seen him flourish in his new surroundings.

West Ham United signed James Ward-Prowse after weeks of speculation over his future and now that the Englishman has made a fast start to life in the capital, Emery will be dwelling on the player he could have had.

Did Aston Villa nearly sign James Ward-Prowse?

Following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, the future of Ward-Prowse became one of the main talking points of the transfer window.

Back in May, prior to the opening of the window, the Daily Mail reported that the former Saints captain did not have a relegation release clause embedded into his contract, with Villa named as one of the clubs eyeing his movements.

James-Ward-Prowse-West-Ham-United

It wasn’t the first time that the Midlands side had hoped to sign the midfielder, with Dean Smith having a £25m bid rejected for the set-piece specialist back in the summer of 2021.

It was West Ham who sealed the deal for the 28-year-old, paying a fee of £30m to Southampton just weeks after walking away from negotiations, signing the Saints star on a four-year contract to end his 20-year association at St Mary’s.

This summer was the moment for Villa to step up and capture the signature of Ward-Prowse, however, it just wasn’t meant to be as the Villans took on fellow relegation-suffering star Youri Tielemans from Leicester City.

What is James Ward-Prowse’s market value?

There was a lot of talk surrounding Ward-Prowse’s next destination after the Mail reported that Saints had put a mammoth £50m price tag on the Englishman’s head this summer.

At the point of such talk, Football Transfers recorded the Portsmouth-born ace’s expected transfer value (xTV) at €39.3m (£34m), making the south coast club’s valuation of their captain a little high for interested clubs to consider without discussion.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

Taking into consideration the importance of the individual to Saints at the time, along with the fact he signed a five-year extension with the club in 2021, it’s clear to see why Southampton placed such a price on the midfielder at that moment.

£30m was the price that the Hammers managed to haggle the Englishman for, in what was a superb deal considering that his market value was an accurate measure of the figure paid at the time.

Fast forward to now, and the Irons maestro has a current xTV of €31.1m (£26.9m), highlighting that David Moyes got his man at the right time for the right price this summer.

How many goals has James Ward-Prowse scored?

It’s clear to see why Villa, among other clubs, were interested in Ward-Prowse following Southampton’s relegation, with the 28-year-old being a seasoned professional in the Premier League and a consistently high-performer at St Mary’s.

While at Saints, the midfielder accumulated 343 Premier League appearances, showing experience in the English top flight that rarely can be bought, with the adaptation period typically difficult for midfielders from abroad.

Throughout his career with the south coast side, the academy graduate turned captain scored a total of 55 goals in all competitions, as well as registering 54 assists in that time.

When Saints were low on inspiration, the Englishman was almost always there to shed some excellence on proceedings, dubbed as “incredible” by current Southampton manager Russell Martin with reference to his time at the club.

While Ward-Prowse’s contributions in the midfield as well as in the final third are admirable, his dead-ball excellence is never overlooked, as he is currently just one direct free-kick away from equalling the Premier League record.

Treble-winner Pep Guardiola previously lauded the 11-cap England international as being “the best free-kick taker” he had “ever seen”, which is praise indeed from a figure that has managed the likes of Lionel Messi.

David Beckham’s record stands at 18, with the Hammers genius just one behind with 17 and considering his track record, the 28-year-old is in good stead to rewrite history in that aspect.

What could James Ward-Prowse have offered to Villa?

Aside from his set-piece theatrics, what West Ham secured was a competent and commanding asset in the middle of the park.

The treasure that the Irons collected was the sparkle that was missed by Villa, who could have had a far stronger set-up in midfield if they had pushed to secure his signature.

John McGinn has shone since Emery’s arrival, however, the Scotsman is not as strong a performer as Ward-Prowse, who could have provided an upgrade to the 28-year-old in the Spaniard’s free-flowing formation.

As per FBref, last season in the Premier League, the former Saints hero averaged 0.18 non-penalty goals per 90, as well as 3.39 shot-creating actions per 90 to showcase the threat he could pose on goal, despite being in a team short of desire.

McGinn fell short in such areas for Villa last term, showing far less of a presence in the final third with an average of 0.03 non-penalty goals per 90, and 2.67 shot-creating actions.

When it came to passing in the 2022/23 campaign, the Villans midfielder ranked lower than their reported summer target in terms of his ability to get the ball into advanced areas, averaging 4.68 progressive passes and just 0.60 key passes per 90.

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn.

Ward-Prowse recorded a superior average of 1.98 key passes per 90 during Saints’ bottom-of-the-table season, as well as averaging 5.05 progressive passes per 90 to convey his presence in the midfield, via FBref.

Having contributed to five goals in four fixtures already this campaign for the Irons, the £30m man is already looking to be a bargain, having scored two and assisted three in his opening moments as a Hammer.

Emery has been shown early days just what he could have had in his side if the club had pushed to sign the Englishman, however, the Spaniard will have to find peace in what has prevailed to be a smart piece of business by the east Londoners.

Na próxima rodada, a Ponte Preta enfrenta o Cruzeiro, no Mineirão. Já o Confiança recebe o Brasil de Pelotas, no estádio Batistão. Ambas as partidas serão realizadas no dia 30 de setembro.

A partida

Bangladesh 'mentality' in SA contributed to Hathurusingha exit – BCB head

Shakib Al Hasan’s request to rest during the South Africa Tests also contributed to the coach’s resignation, according to BCB president Nazmul Hassan

Mohammad Isam09-Dec-2017Chandika Hathurusingha’s disenchantment with the Bangladesh team led to his resignation midway through the South Africa tour in October. BCB president Nazmul Hassan made this statement after meeting the now former Bangladesh head coach in Dhaka, where he arrived on Saturday to tie up loose ends in his workplace of three years.Hathurusingha, Hassan said, was particularly frustrated with the board allowing Shakib Al Hasan to rest during the Test series against South Africa. Hassan said that there were several other issues, apart from what transpired in South Africa, which added up to the coach’s decision to quit.”He is very disappointed with the South Africa tour,” Hassan said. “The type of cricket, the mentality, everything. He said he couldn’t believe the cricket Bangladesh played during the tour. He had problem with the cricketers’ mentality. For example, he didn’t agree with the fact that Shakib didn’t go to play the Test series. What he said was, ‘Why won’t he play such an important series for the team?'”There were several other issues which we didn’t address at the time. There was a communication gap. So putting it all together, he felt that he didn’t have much more to give to this team. He gave what he could, [but felt now] that he should leave this team. He felt that Bangladesh won’t be going forward the way it was moving.”News of Hathurusingha’s resignation broke ten days after the team had returned home from South Africa. Later in the day, Hassan confirmed, the BCB had accepted his decision. A month later, Sri Lanka appointed him their new head coach.Several hours after arriving in Dhaka, Hathurusingha met with the BCB top brass that included president Hassan, CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury and directors Ismail Haider Mallick, Khaled Mahmud and Akram Khan.Hassan said that Hathurusingha is in the process of submitting a report on the South Africa tour, but that he had already told the BCB of his views on the future of the Bangladesh team.”He spoke particularly about issues that will help take Bangladesh cricket forward. He told us about the things we need to do, avoid, and look into in order to take the next step in our progress.”He even said, when talking about a cricketer, that ‘you supported him for 10 years and he also gave you a lot. Now if you take action against him, it will not solve anything. You have to get the best out of him’. He said that if we can climb over mental barriers, Bangladesh can do a lot better.”

SuperSport close to sealing T20 Global League broadcast rights

Cricket South Africa will reveal the broadcast partners for the inaugural T20 Global League on Thursday, pending final discussions with SuperSport. Though unconfirmed at the moment, Africa’s biggest broadcaster are expected to air the tournament, albeit by paying reduced rights fees. The exact figures will be made public when the deal is sealed. With less than a month to go before the event begins on November 3, and in the wake of Haroon Lorgat’s departure from CSA, the absence of a broadcast deal has dogged the organisation. Lorgat, who told media last month that he was “waiting for the right time” to sign a broadcast partner, was unable to confirm either a South African or Indian television company and is understood to have rejected a bid from SuperSport, which he considered too little. But with no other viable broadcaster on the continent and a lack of interest from Indian companies, CSA has been forced to go back to SuperSport and negotiate a new deal. Given the tight timeframe before the tournament’s start, SuperSport will likely incur extra costs, leading to a smaller deal. An Indian broadcaster has yet to be confirmed. However, CSA is exploring the option of making some of the tournament available on free-to-air television in South Africa, via the public broadcaster, SABC. CSA acting CEO Thabang Moroe told ESPNcricinfo that once the SuperSport deal had been signed, CSA would look at how best it could accommodate the SABC. While the SABC does not broadcast domestic cricket, international cricket played in South Africa is shown on the network. For the majority of South Africans, that it the only way to watch cricket on television as SuperSport is a paid-for service.

Newcastle Could Sign Their Own £34m Araujo

This century, the idea that a player would rather join Newcastle United over Manchester United is laughable.

The Magpies had to endure a painful tenure under the damaging ownership of Mike Ashley that eventually culminated in relegation.

Rafa Benitez led the club back to promotion but the failure to keep the Spaniard and replace him with Steve Bruce was viewed as another grave error.

But, under the new ownership and the stewardship of Eddie Howe, Newcastle have been transformed from an uninspiring and toxic setup that would be lucky to stay in the top flight and into a vastly attractive and competitive side, that now finds itself in Europe’s most elite competition.

The new era incorporates a more confident and proactive board, who possess the financial muscle and an appealing project to convince a different calibre of player to Saint James Park.

One man who is constantly linked to Newcastle and could opt to join the Tyneside Giant over United is Axel Disasi.

What’s the latest on Axel Disasi to Newcastle United?

According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle could be set to overtake the Red Devils in the race for Disasi.

Last month, it was reported the 2023 Carabao Cup winners were on the verge of completing a deal for the 25-year-old. The player’s brother had even visited the club’s facilities in the spring and mentioned the possibility of the defender arriving in the summer.

However, Newcastle have accelerated their attempts to sign Disasi and has submitted a contractual offer to his representatives as part of talks between the parties.

The outlet also details that Monaco is hoping to acquire a fee of around €40 (£34m) for the centre-back, whose contract expires in 2025.

Would Axel Disasi be a good signing for Newcastle?

The £12k-per-week titan has played for Monaco since 2020 and established himself as one of France’s most reliable and sought-after defenders.

Last campaign, Disasi started every Ligue 1 game but one and made his international debut at the 2022 World Cup to become the first Frenchman to make play his first game for Les Blues at this tournament since 1966.

In a recent interview, the 6 foot 3 star outlined his strengths, saying: “My size is an advantage, I am comfortable in the air and in my sense of anticipation.

“I also try to play the ball out from the back cleanly, to have fun on the pitch and above all to follow the coach's instructions. I'm a player who works for the team and I hope to bring my defensive strength to bear.”

His attributes and style of play have earnt comparisons to Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo.

Both players are extremely competent ball carriers, with Disasi slightly outranking the Uruguayan for progressive passes per 90 (4.58 vs 3.89), progressive carries per 90 (1.70 vs 1.40), and successful take-ons per 90 (0.57 vs 0.52).

For context, all these numbers mean both players rank within the best 12% in Europe’s top five leagues among their positional peers for all metrics.

Then defensively, Disasi scores better than Araujo for interceptions per 90 (1.87 vs 0.52), clearances per 90 (2.95 vs 1.92), and aerials won per 90 (2.54 vs 2.14).

Described as “complete” by Jacek Kulig, Disasi looks ready for a move to the Premier League.
