Update: 3-5-2 manager "one to watch" to replace Xisco at Sheffield Wednesday

Since sacking Xisco Munoz following their worst-ever start to a season, Sheffield Wednesday have been on the hunt for a new manager, and one they hope can guide them away from any relegation troubles. With an international break coming up, too, they have an ideal opportunity to ensure that their next appointment is the right one.

As things stand, the Owls sit rock bottom of the Championship, having picked up just two points in 10 games to already leave them seven points adrift of safety in England's second tier. If they get their next appointment wrong, then those at Hillsborough could be staring down the barrel of an instant return to League One. With a number of names linked with the job, one recent report has suggested that one particular manager is one to keep an eye on.

Sheff Wed manager news; Jones, Evans, Garcia, Warnock, Lamouchi

So far, we've seen Nathan Jones, Steve Evans, Oscar Garcia, and Neil Warnock all linked with taking the job in a strong list of candidates. But, according to reporter Darren Witcoop, who has provided a Sheffield Wednesday manager update, Sabri Lamouchi is "one to watch". Witcoop said:

"Sabri Lamouchi one to watch re the Sheffield Wednesday job. The Frenchman, who has Champ experience with Nottingham Forest and Cardiff, had been expected to return to management with Qatar SC this week. He’s just signed up with agent Pini Zahavi to seek new opportunities."

Lamouchi, of course, last managed Cardiff City, before being dismissed in June of this year, despite keeping the Welsh side in the Championship. On top of that job, the Frenchman has also had experience in England with Nottingham Forest, and taken up roles elsewhere at Al-Duhail, Stade Rennais, Ivory Coast, and El-Jaish.

Is Sabri Lamouchi a good manager?

Though some may see Lamouchi as a rather underwhelming option, he proved his ability to keep sides up by helping Cardiff to survival last season. In 18 games, he won six, lost 10, and drew two in what was a difficult, but successful stint in the end, as the Bluebirds kept their place in the second tier.

Ironically, during his time at Nottingham Forest, Lamouchi suffered a 4-0 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday. Now four years on, however, he will hope to have learnt just how to avoid such defeats, potentially making him an ideal candidate to take over at Hillsborough.

If the former Forest man does get the job, it will certainly be interesting to see how he sets up. His preferred system usually involves a 3-5-2 formation, which is some contrast to Munoz's 4-2-3-1 tactic, meaning that the Owls would need some time to adjust to Lamouchi's methods before their form potentially picked up.

The next week or so may well make or break Sheffield Wednesday's season, and whether they'll be playing Championship football for a second consecutive campaign, or if they'll be forced to make the climb into England's second division once again from League One. If it is to be Lamouchi, he'll have a hefty job on his hands.

Newcastle Suffer New Defensive Injury Blow Alongside Sven Botman

Things aren't going well for Newcastle United at the moment and they have now suffered a fresh injury blow alongside the concern for Sven Botman, according to a new update.

Who is injured for Newcastle?

The Magpies had such an impressive season last time around, finishing fourth in the Premier League and getting back into the Champions League, but things aren't going to plan in 2023/24 to date.

Having cruised to an emphatic 5-1 win at home to Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the campaign, things have gone very wrong since, with three defeats in a row. They were beaten 1-0 away to Manchester City, which certainly wasn't a disaster, but losing to 10-man Liverpool was hugely disappointing, as was Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Brighton.

It means the mood at St James' Park is fairly bleak heading into the international break, and the absence of the influential Botman was felt against Brighton, with Newcastle looking more open at the back without him around. Joe Willock is also currently absent, having not yet featured this season, and now another blow has emerged during the international break.

Is Alex Murphy injured for Newcastle?

According to an update from Newcastle World, Magpies youngster Alex Murphy has now also been sidelined through injury, being ruled out of the international break:

"Newcastle United’s young defender Alex Murphy has been forced to withdraw from international duty because of injury. The 19-year-old was called up to the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21 squad for Euro qualifiers against Turkey and San Marino but has been replaced by Wigan Athletic defender Baba Adeeko.

"In a statement released by Ireland on Monday morning, they revealed Murphy suffered an injury during the young Magpies’ 4-0 defeat to Manchester City Under-21s on Saturday and was therefore unavailable."

While Murphy certainly isn't a key man at Newcastle currently, this is still clearly another setback at a difficult time for the Magpies, with Eddie Howe no doubt beginning to feel like the world is against him and his depth is dwindling – there are also rumours about Joelinton's fitness.

The 19-year-old is a talented centre-back who has made 22 appearances for the Under-21s, not to mention winning nine caps for the Republic of Ireland's Under-19s, while Howe himself has lauded him in the past, saying:

"I thought he was excellent, really really good. It's a very tough environment to come into, especially slightly out of position. But he was very composed, and defended really well. I was really, really pleased with him.

"I've always liked Alex. I think he's a very good technician. But it's really when you find out about players when you're in this environment- a full crowd, Premier League opposition. He can be very pleased with his night's work."

The hope is that Murphy's absence is only a short-term one, allowing him to be fit once the international break is over, as he continues to mature as a footballer and hopefully push for first-team football in the near future.

More important for Newcastle right now is getting Botman back fit, though, with the centre-back someone who the Magpies cannot afford to be without for an extended period of time, as the defeat away to Brighton showed, with goals conceded simply too easily.

'Our seamers bowled well up front in arctic conditions' – Law

West Indies coach Stuart Law praised his seamers for a strong early effort in “arctic conditions” at the start of the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. While the mercury was as high as 38 degrees Celsius earlier this week, temperatures plummeted in the days before the game and dropped as low as 13 degrees today.”In these conditions, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, it’s hard work,” Law said. “You’ve got to concentrate. All in all I thought our seamers bowled well up front in arctic conditions.”West Indies’ quicks nipped three of Zimbabwe’s top order out inside the first hour of play, and they might also have removed Hamilton Masakadza early on had it not been for a no-ball from Shannon Gabriel. Law rued the missed opportunity, saying: “We had a wicket off a no-ball which has hurt us. We need to rectify that. We have spoken about it because it has happened quite often. We’ve just got to make sure we don’t do it again.”The error from Gabriel aside, there wasn’t a lot wrong with West Indies’ effort and Law singled out Kemar Roach for particular praise. Roach, who has taken 14 wickets in his last four Tests before this one, removed both Solomon Mire and Brendan Taylor in his opening spell.”He’s leading our attack,” Law said. “He’s our most experienced bowler and has the most wickets as well. He’s had some time out of the game as well, so it’s good to see him back in. He’s bowled superbly for us in England, thought he bowled well in the first Test and exceptionally well again this morning.”In conditions suited to spin bowling, it was thought that Devendra Bishoo would also prove a handful for Zimbabwe, especially after his nine-wicket haul in the first Test. He struggled in the cold, however, and went wicketless on the first day despite the turn on offer. “Bishoo struggled to get his hands warm so it didn’t quite come out for him,” Law explained. “The wicket is spinning square before lunch on day one again. It’s probably not an ideal five-day wicket, but it is what it is.”With Gabriel nursing what appeared to be some tightness in his hamstring, and Jason Holder also leaving the field during the day, West Indies turned to some of their part-time bowlers. Jermaine Blackwood came on as first change, while Roston Chase’s offspinners were used far more extensively than they had been in the first innings of the first Test.”The wickets aren’t going to be anywhere near conducive to seam bowling, so we’ve got to keep our seamers fresh,” Law explained. “It’s not about winning the game on day one, there are four more to go. If we blow them out in the first hour and a half of the first day we’re not going to set ourselves up well. Using Jermaine Blackwood for a period of time, although not the way I would have gone, he came on and did a good job. Went for eight runs off four overs, couple of plays and misses.”There was little further joy for West Indies after their early breakthroughs, with Hamilton Masakadza and PJ Moor putting on 142 for the fourth wicket, but Law remained hopeful that West Indies could reassert themselves on day two.”Take nothing away from Hamilton and Pete Moor, they dug in and put up a good partnership. They had a bit of luck – Hamilton with the no-ball – but he’s certainly played well. He hits the ball well and on wickets like these he’s tough to contain as well. We know that at times there are going to be partnerships, we’ve just got to hang in and get a wicket. We saw in the first Test that if you get one or two you can start a rot. Fingers crossed we can start one tomorrow.”

Nottingham Forest: Cooper Could Now Sign "Exemplary" £11m Titan

Nottingham Forest are reportedly interested in Galatasaray centre-back Victor Nelsson, as Steve Cooper looks to bolster his side ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

The Reds must make sufficient changes this summer if they are to compete next term, with a firm first test away at Arsenal a good indicator to what the squad require to avoid another relegation battle.

One area that will need assistance is the defence, which could be improved if latest reports are to be believed.

What’s the latest on Victor Nelsson to Nottingham Forest?

As reported by renowned journalist Gianluca Di Marzio on Twitter, Forest have made contact with Turkish champions Galatasaray over the potential signing of Nelsson.

Di Marzio claims that contact is ‘ongoing’, confirming the Premier League side’s interest in the Danish defender.

Valued by FootballTransfers at €12.5m (£11m), Cooper could land himself a bargain in a player that was speculated in Turkey to be wanted by both Tottenham and Arsenal this window.

How good is Victor Nelsson?

The 24-year-old made 33 appearances in the Super Lig to heavily contribute to the Lions’ title-winning campaign, having a hand in 15 clean sheets in an impressive individual season.

Deployed in central defence, the Denmark international won 57% of his total duels in the league last term, averaging 4.5 duel wins per game to communicate his assured presence in the back line, via Sofascore.

Previously lauded as “exemplary” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the defender could be warmly welcomed at the City Ground, in a move that could bolster the quality and future of Cooper’s squad.

Last season’s combination of Felipe and Moussa Niakhate was efficient for the Welshman, however with the Brazilian being 34 years of age and Niakhate currently nursing a dislocated elbow, Forest are short in central defence.

In Nelsson, the Reds could not only sign an eventual heir to the former Atletico Madrid man but also the ideal partner for the Senegalese titan in what could be a strong partnership at the back.

Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson.

One of the notable areas that the Danish whiz could implement into Cooper’s back line is his composure on the ball, as highlighted by his pass success rate of 85.7% per game.

A trait recognised in the best defences in the Premier League, Forest have lacked the comfort of fielding a centre-back comfortable in possession, suggested by Niakhate’s pass completion rate of 67.8% per 90, paired with Felipe’s 72.4%.

Introducing Nelsson to the side could bring the best out of the Senegal international, who could thrive in playing beside a defender with such swagger on the ball.

The two are similar in their approaches to protecting the goal, with their averages recorded in their respective league seasons suggesting that they could be a strong duo, with Nelsson averaging 0.8 tackles and 1.0 interceptions per game to the Forest man’s 1.39 tackles and 1.47 interceptions per 90.

Following the interest in the defender from north London, Forest could snatch themselves a highly-rated talent in the centre-back, in a deal that could be the difference at the back in the new campaign.

Malinga gets suspended ban for breach of contract

Fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been given a suspended ban of six months and fined 50% of the match fee of his next ODI appearance, after a disciplinary inquiry found him guilty of breaching his contract. Sri Lanka Cricket’s decision will have no impact on the fast bowler’s availability for the Zimbabwe series – he was named in the 13-member squad for the first two ODIs.Malinga appeared before SLC’s special inquiry panel on Tuesday, where he accepted the charges against him and tendered a formal apology. A specially convened executive committee meeting then imposed a “1 Year suspension, suspended by six months (whereby the punishment would be imposed in the event of a similar infraction within the stipulated 6 month period) and a 50% fine of his next ODI match fee,” SLC said in a release. The inquiry was precipitated by Malinga’s response to sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, who had alleged that Sri Lanka’s poor fielding standards were due to players’ inadequate fitness, in particular their “big bellies”. Malinga had not taken direct aim at Jayasekara in a stinging response, but nevertheless had implied in an interview that the sports minister was no more than an armchair critic, and had not played cricket at a sufficiently high level for his criticism to be taken seriously.SLC said the fast bowler had twice acted in “contravention of the terms of agreement”, which bar him from making any statements to the media without the prior consent of the board’s chief executive officer: the first violation was around June 19, before a subsequent breach around June 21.The three-member inquiry panel comprised SLC secretary Mohan de Silva, CEO Ashley de Silva and chairman of the disciplinary committee, Asela Rekawa.

Arsenal Preparing Fresh Move For "Sensational" £50m Star

Arsenal are preparing to make a fresh attempt to sign Southampton's Romeo Lavia, with the midfielder recently giving the move the green light following positive talks, according to a report from Football Insider.

Is Romeo Lavia leaving Southampton this summer?

There are a number of top Premier League clubs set to battle it out for Lavia this summer, following Southampton's relegation from the top flight, with the Saints resigned to losing him, although they do hope to receive a sizeable fee.

Amid interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, the midfielder could end up costing any potential suitor around £50m, but there is hesitancy among the interested parties about whether he is worth that much.

The Gunners have already held talks with the Belgian's representatives, but the indication is that they will not be willing to pay Southampton's asking price, given their expenditure in the transfer window up to this point.

Football Insider also report the Saints are looking to hold out for a fee of £50m, with Manchester City entitled to 20% due to the sell-on clause included in the 19-year-old's contract, and Arsenal could now be ready to pursue a deal.

Following positive conversations, the youngster has now given the move the green light, and there is an indication he would be eager to play under Mikel Arteta, as the report claims he is a big fan of the manager.

With Thomas Partey now closing in on a move to Saudi Arabia, the Gunners are well aware they will need a replacement for the central midfielder, and they are now expected to push Liverpool all the way in the race for Lavia's signature.

Chelsea also retain an interest in the Southampton star, so there could be a real transfer battle on the cards in the coming weeks.

How good is Romeo Lavia?

Football writer Lewis Steele has previously expressed his shock that Pep Guardiola was willing to sell the young midfielder, saying: "Romeo Lavia is a sensational midfielder. Who at Manchester City sanctioned selling him for just £15m?"

However, the Man City boss has since made it clear that the Belgium international's departure was not due to a lack of ability, stating: “I'm impressed with what Romeo Lavia is doing at Southampton. We’ve an incredible opinion of him. We thought to keep him — but we couldn't give him enough minutes like he has at Southampton”.

Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

It was undoubtedly the right call for the former Man City man to move on last summer, as he has really started to develop during his time with Southampton, having made 29 appearances in the Premier League last season.

The Brussels-born maestro only scored one league goal, but he was very impressive in other areas, averaging the highest pass-success rate of any Saints player to start more than one game.

Lavia is also very adept defensively, averaging 2.1 tackles per game in the league, the same amount as Partey, while he also averaged more interceptions than the Ghanaian, indicating he could be a solid long-term replacement.

Classy Chase leads West Indies rally

An unbeaten 132-run stand for the seventh wicket between Roston Chase (131) and Jason Holder (58) helped West Indies end day one on 286 for 6

The Report by Danyal Rasool30-Apr-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:07

Roston Chase, the Caribbean’s Crisis Man

A day that started with ominous familiarity for the West Indies ended in unexpected success as the hosts recovered from a middle order meltdown to post 286 for 6 at stumps. Roston Chase was primarily responsible for the turnaround, an unbeaten 131 – just his second century – dominating the day, while Jason Holder’s unbeaten fifty helped run Pakistan ragged in a final session off which they scored 120.Chase’s awareness around the crease was excellent, knowing exactly when to leave the ball. He was equally effective at adjusting his feet when facing the spinners, and was in position to take advantage when they dropped the ball either short or bowled full. The stroke that brought up his century was a fitting snapshot of how he had played: a delightful cover drive off an overpitched delivery from legpinner Shadab Khan, who had a particularly harsh introduction to the longest format. In the absence of Yasir Shah for most parts of the final session, he was summoned but failed to ring in any sort of consistency. The evening session began, somewhat familiarly, with Holder joining Chase to play his part in yet another rearguard. With the West Indies top and middle order disappointing so regularly, Holder’s runs in the lower order have become essential to his side, rather than just an added bonus. To his credit, he delivers more often than not, and he gave Chase stellar support. With Yasir clearly hampered by a back niggle and unable to bowl at full tilt, Pakistan were at times reduced to being a three-man attack. Chase and Holder were wise to the situation, ensuring they didn’t give a wicket away easily and waited for the bowlers to tire. As they did, their intensity invariably dropped and for the first time all day, Pakistan looked like they were waiting for a wicket to fall instead of actively hunting for one.West Indies had perhaps expected an easier ride after winning the toss and choosing to bat in favourable conditions, but a splendid new ball spell from both Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Abbas put them on the back foot straightaway. The wicket of Kraigg Brathwaite, when it came, had a sense of inevitability to it, the right-hander edging an Amir delivery that held its line. When Shimron Hetmyer fell flashing at a ball outside off stump soon after, the lack of experience was telling. With the pitch seen as conducive to spin bowling, Misbah-ul-Haq turned to Yasir as early as the eleventh over. There was sharp turn on offer for the legspinner right away, hardly a ringing endorsement of the wicket, what with this being the first morning of the Test. But with the under-fire Shai Hope having gone into his shell, Yasir pitched one on a length around middle stump. Hope failed to get on the front foot in time, and the ball took the edge through to Sarfraz Ahmed as West Indies slumped to 37 for 3.Amir provided Pakistan the next breakthrough, ripping a yorker into Powell’s toes that tailed in at serious pace, taking the slow pitch out of the equation. The umpire turned down the appeal, but Amir was sure, and Hawk-Eye agreed with him. Wickets continued to fall as West Indies threatened to fold for a sub-200 total, as the hosts were reduced to 154 for 6. The players went in for tea soon after; the fans will probably have needed something stronger. What they couldn’t have known was Chase and Holder would concoct the perfect tonic to soothe their disappointment in the final session, as the West Indies improbably finished the day on even terms. With the partnership standing at 132, and still unbeaten, the fans had better turn up tomorrow, too. They certainly haven’t seen this before.
