JP Duminy would welcome an ODI league and the addition of two extra Test teams, as proposed by the ICC’s Chief Executives Committee (CEC) at the latest round of board meetings last week. If approved, international cricket could run on a new schedule with a two-year Test league, a three-year, 13-team ODI league, culminating in qualification for the 50-over World Cup, and regional tournaments to determine places for a World T20. That will mean all limited-overs series will carry some weight and that is something Duminy is in favour of.”The best way to answer that is something that Russell [Domingo, South Africa’s coach] harps on quite a lot. Every game that you play for your country is of importance,” Duminy said. “If that [the new system] is in place, that puts a lot more emphasis on that. If we are focusing on that, that means we are giving our best throughout the series and for every game so that’s a big bonus.”The current series between South Africa and Sri Lanka is an example of why an ODI league would be a good idea. South Africa’s dominance in the three matches played so far has meant interest in the series has dwindled, although the prospect of a whitewash and South Africa ascending to No.1 on the rankings has provided some narrative.”The end result is definitely about 5-nil. Tomorrow is the most important game for us but we’ve always had one eye on 5-nil,” Duminy said. “It’s always a nice thing to be ranked No.1 and that will be an added bonus for us but for now it’s about making sure we focus on what’s important for us and that is the preparation leading up to the Champions Trophy.”Asked if he would be keen to play Tests against the likes of Ireland and Afghanistan, Duminy said he was eager for the chance to take on different opposition. “If that’s the situation, we would be up for it,” he said. “No matter who we are playing against, it’s an opportunity to represent your country and we don’t take that for granted. Whatever comes our way, we will be up for it.”And what about touring Afghanistan? “Why not? They’ve got some good players and we’ve played against them in the shorter formats and they’ve definitely given us a run for our money so why not?”South Africa have played two T20s against Afghanistan, at World T20s in 2010 and 2016. They won both matches, by 59 and 37 runs respectively. This summer, South Africa also hosted Ireland for the first time. Ireland played two ODIs in the country, one against South Africa and one against Australia. CSA have also begun the process of putting together working groups with neighbours Zimbabwe to see how they can assist them with everything from corporate governance to on-field cricket activities.

Leeds Could Upgrade On McKennie With £4m-rated "Animal"

Leeds United are yet to make their first move in the 2023 summer transfer window with the 49ers club takeover yet to be concluded, but that has not stopped rumours of Jayson Molumby's possible transfer to Elland Road.

The West Bromwich Albion star has been in fine fettle and one of the centrepieces behind the Championship outfit's resurgence after a dismal start to the most recent campaign, and Leeds have taken note.

That's according to The Sun's Alan Nixon, who has recently claimed via his Patreon account that Leeds have earmarked the dynamic midfielder as a top target this summer.

Rated at £4m by Football Transfers, Molumby would be an excellent fit for the West Yorkshire outfit, at least, that's according to transfer insider Dean Jones – speaking to GIVEMESPORT – who said: "You need players that the Leeds fans can trust and identify with. And this is someone who would certainly show all the determination and drive that you would really expect from Leeds and want in his position.”

How good is Jayson Molumby?

If Leeds could pull off what would be a signing to catalyse the central midfield's robustness and effectiveness, it could represent the dream replacement for Weston McKennie, who endured a lacklustre six-month loan spell with the Whites after signing from Juventus in January.

This is not to explicitly say that Molumby is a 'better' player than McKennie, who, of course, boasts a wealth of experience across multiple top-flight European leagues and has starred for USA at the 2022 World Cup, but it simply didn't work out for the industrious midfielder at Elland Road, and he floundered to an average rating of 6.67 – as per Sofascore – across his 19 matches in the division. This was just the 13th-best rating in the squad last term.

Hailed as "an insane talent" by journalist Rudy Kinsella, Molumby is tried and tested in the second tier and would surely view a transfer to Leeds as a step up in his career and the chance to cement a starting berth in an outfit hoping to rectify the past wrongs with a swift return to the Premier League.

The omens are certainly promising, with the Waterford-born ace playing 43 times in the Championship this season as West Brom eradicated the concerns over relegation and forged a path to promotion contention, missing out on the play-offs by just three points.

The 23-year-old recorded an average rating of 6.83 after posting four goals and assists apiece, also completing 86% of his passes and averaging 1.4 tackles per game.

Praised as an "animal" by manager Carlos Corberan, the Republic of Ireland international seemingly boasts the tenacity and guile to succeed in the Championship, and he would certainly be a massive upgrade on McKennie, who was indifferent during his time at Elland Road.

Mashrafe rues lack of support for Mahmudullah

Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh’s captain, rued the lack of support for Mahmudullah, whose 52 helped drag the team to 141 after they had slumped to 30 for 4 in the first T20I against New Zealand

Mohammad Isam03-Jan-2017Twice during New Zealand’s chase in the first T20I against Bangladesh in Napier, Kane Williamson escaped being caught at the boundary, with the fielder stationed several yards inside the rope on both occasions. First, with New Zealand needing 61 off 41 balls, Soumya Sarkar was about 10 yards inside the rope at deep midwicket, enabling Williamson’s slog to clear him and go for four. In the 16th over, Williamson saw his powerful loft towards long-off sail over Imrul Kayes, who couldn’t backtrack far enough in time to complete the catch. Both times the fielders made tactical errors that could have put New Zealand under pressure given that they only had one recognised batsman in the dressing room, Luke Ronchi. Bangladesh eventually lost by six wickets. Mashrafe Mortaza, their captain, felt his team could have regained control of the game had either of those moments resulted in a catch. He said, however, that the two fielders, whom he called the best in the team, may have moved off the rope to try and cut off twos.”Maybe [Sarkar] was 5-10 yards inside because that side of the ground was bigger,” Mashrafe said. “There weren’t any instructions but he thought he could manage by backtracking, but he couldn’t. I didn’t really see whether Imrul Kayes was standing too far inside. You can call it a misjudgment but our best fielders were standing in those positions. Maybe they thought that they could adjust themselves as they were looking to cut off the twos. If any of those catches were taken, the game could have shifted towards us, especially the one in Shakib’s over [the one that cleared Sarkar].”More than these incidents, Mashrafe said the key moment that turned the game came when Bangladesh slipped to 30 for 4 in the sixth over, after Lockie Ferguson took two wickets off his first two deliveries in T20Is. Mahmudullah’s 52 dragged Bangladesh to 141, but Mashrafe said he could have done with better support at the other end, and felt that was an issue that had dogged the team through their tour so far.”The turning point was when we were 30 for four. It also put us back,” he said. “If it hadn’t been for Mahmudullah’s unbelievable innings, we wouldn’t reach 141.”You would have seen that at least one batsman stepped up in our four international matches on this tour so far. But there wasn’t a collective effort with two or more batsmen also making contributions. Nobody has been supporting the batsman who is doing well. I think this is becoming a turning point for us.”

Fourteen wickets tumble in Dharamsala; Hooda dominates Punjab

Group A

Fourteen wickets fell in Dharamsala in the fourth-round clash between Bengal and Railways. Railways’ bowlers vindicated their captain’s decision to field by dismissing Bengal for 205. But their batsmen couldn’t hold on to the advantage as they slipped to 37 for 4 by the close.Four of the five bowlers used by Railways picked up wickets, with Anureet Singh’s 4 for 66 leading the way. Right-arm medium pacer Amit Mishra picked up 3 for 38, while Karan Thakur took two wickets and Karn Sharma one. Bengal’s innings featured two partnerships of note. First, Sudip Chatterjee, the No. 3 who top-scored with 85, added 52 with Sayan Mondal for the second wicket. He then combined with Agniv Pan for a fifth-wicket partnership of 66. Ashok Dindachipped in with a 26-ball 30, before Bengal’s innings was wrapped up in 69.5 overs. Dinda got the wickets of Saurabh Wakaskar and Mrunal Devdhar early in Railways’ reply. Amit Kulia and Sayan Ghosh also joined in with a wicket each to compound Railways’ woes.At the Feroz Shah Kotla, Deepak Hooda was in sight of his maiden first-class double century as his career-best 190 not out headlined Baroda’s day of dominance against Punjab. Baroda piled on 358 for 6 in 90 overs, despite a four-for from Sandeep Sharma, who had rocked them early in the day with the wickets of their openers. With Baroda reduced to 11 for 2, Dhiren Mistry and Hooda compiled 178 for the third wicket to offset the early stumble and lay a solid platform. Mistry made 76 before being caught behind off Siddharth Kaul. Hooda added 80 more for the fourth wicket with wicketkeeper Pinal Shah. Sandeep removed Pinal for 42 and Yusuf Pathan for a second-ball duck, while Vishnu Solanki also fell cheaply. But Hooda stayed dominant and ended the day with 16 fours and three sixes, having struck at 88.37 per 100 balls.Elsewhere, at the DRIEMS Grounds in Tangi, Tamil Nadu put behind twin early jolts to recover to 262 for 4 on the opening day against Madhya Pradesh. Tamil Nadu lost both their openers for ducks inside the first two overs, after being put in. They were then lifted through half-centuries from Kaushik Gandhi (71*) and Dinesh Karthik (95).Gandhi and Karthik got together with the score at 54 for 3 and added 144 in 46 overs for the fourth wicket. Karthik struck 15 fours in his 153-ball knock, before being caught off Chandrakant Sakure, the right-arm medium pacer, five short of a century. B Indrajith and Gandhi then joined hands for an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 64. Indrajith was unbeaten on 44. Sakure ended the day with 2 for 47, while Ishwar Pandey and Ashwin Das, the new-ball duo, dismissed the Tamil Nadu openers. At the Palam Grounds in New Delhi, right-arm medium pacer Imtiaz Ahmed’s 4 for 48 helped Uttar Pradesh fight back against Gujarat, who squandered a strong start to end the day on 276 for 8. Gujarat’s openers Samit Gohel and Priyank Panchal laid a solid platform through a 122-run opening stand. Both batsmen made scores of 60, before Imtiaz dismissed both. But none of Gujarat’s other batsmen could make a noteworthy contribution, with the exception of Parthiv Patel, the captain, who also scored 60. Chirag Gandhi, the No. 6, was not out on 33 when stumps were drawn.

Newcastle Must Now Sell ‘Rusty’ £15m Dud This Summer

Newcastle United are in a fantastic position to cement their stature as one of Europe's elite after forging a remarkable campaign under Eddie Howe's stewardship, qualifying for the Champions League and reaching the Carabao Cup final.

It's a drastic improvement on the club's efforts in recent history, having failed to reach the top half of the Premier League across the past four seasons and last qualifying for Europe over a decade ago.

The PIF takeover in October 2021 has injected affluence unseen by all but a select few top footballing outfits, and the forthcoming summer transfer window will be imperative to bolster the ranks with first-rate additions, with Howe stating that 'elite' arrivals are imminent.

While the return of European competition will ostensibly provide greater opportunity for peripheral figures at St. James' Park, there are certain figures that will find their bit-part role in the squad only diminished with the expanding calibre of the Tyneside team, one of which being Jamal Lewis.

Should Newcastle sell Jamal Lewis?

Lewis is one ace who will likely be at the epicentre of the summer transition; with the likes of Kieran Tierney and Raphael Guerreiro targetted, it is clear that Newcastle are seeking fresh faces to fortify the defensive left flank.

Signing from Norwich City for £15m in 2020, Lewis has only made 36 appearances and clinched one assist, with 26 of those displays coming in his first term.

Described as "rusty" by Craig Hope during one of his scant opportunities to impress this season, during Newcastle's FA Cup defeat against League One Sheffield Wednesday, it is increasingly hard to believe that Howe will provide a player who has made just eight appearances under his wing.

As per Sofascore, the £38k-per-week defender recorded a dismal average rating of 6.46 in the top-flight last term, making just four starts, and 6.48 the previous campaign, where he enjoyed more frequency on the pitch and started 20 matches.

The 25-year-old was once a highly-rated prospect, emerging as an exciting, marauding full-back with the Canaries and forging 100 outings – scoring two goals and registering four assists – after rising through the club's youth academy.

He was integral in guiding his team to the Premier League and playing a central role in their 19/20 top-flight season, where he made an average of two clearances and 1.8 tackles per match and completed 79% of his passes, impressive despite suffering relegation back to the second tier.

And with Dan Burn, who is naturally a centre-back, entrusted with deployment in Lewis' position in an unorthodox role, the chances of the 30-cap Northern Ireland international flourishing at the club are indeed slight.

It simply hasn't worked out, and Lewis must be ditched this summer to end his misery on Tyneside and open up space for technical director Dan Ashworth to sign a first-rate new defender to enrich the Toon's burgeoning squad.

Arsenal’s £150k-p/w Star Slammed For Performance vs Newcastle

Arsenal left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko was slammed for his performance against Newcastle United in the Premier League this afternoon.

What was the Newcastle vs Arsenal result?

The Gunners had to weather an early storm away at St. James' Park this afternoon, with Jacob Murphy striking the post less than 90 seconds into the game, before the hosts were awarded a penalty for handball by Jakub Kiwior.

VAR ultimately overturned to the decision, with the replays showing the ball hit the defender's leg before bouncing up on to his arm, and Martin Odegaard opened the scoring with a sublime finish from outside the box just before the 15-minute mark.

After some good work from Gabriel Martinelli on the left-hand side, Fabian Schar turned the ball into his own net in the second half to create a two-goal lead for the visitors, which proved to be insurmountable for the Magpies.

Despite the important victory, which moves the Gunners back within point of Manchester City in the Premier League table, Zinchenko was slammed by members of the media for his performance.

GiveMeSport's Terry Flewers took to Twitter to say the left-back's side was being "exposed massively" by Newcastle, while Arsenal correspondent Charles Watts claimed the £150k-per-week defender "got turned inside out" by Murphy, in the build-up to Alexander Isak hitting the post.

Should Zinchenko be dropped?

It was not the Ukrainian's best performance by any means, which is evidenced by Mikel Arteta choosing to replace him with Kieran Tierney in the second half, and his inability to stop Murphy could have been more costly on another day, if Isak had buried his opportunity.

The 26-year-old has not been in the best form of late, receiving a 6.2 Sofascore match rating against Man City, the second-lowest of any Arsenal starter, while he was also ranked as their worst-performing outfield player against Southampton.

Arsenal'sOleksandrZinchenkowith manager Mikel Arteta

Famous Arsenal media personality Troopz praised Tierney's contribution after coming off the bench, claiming Zinchenko should "take notes" from the Scotland international.

As such, Mikel Arteta should undoubtedly reward the substitute with a start against Brighton & Hove Albion next weekend.

Newcastle Backed To Move For La Liga Star

Newcastle United are believed to be "monitoring" Raphinha's situation at Barcelona ahead of a possible summer move, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Is Raphinha impressing at Barcelona?

The 24-year-old moved to the Camp Nou from Leeds United last summer, with the Brazilian finding it too hard to turn down one of Europe's biggest clubs. He hasn't necessarily set the world alight during his first year in a Barca shirt, but he has still scored seven goals and chipped in with six assists in 30 La Liga appearances, helping them to title glory in the process.

It could be argued that more was required from him when he arrived, however, given his reputation at the time, and it could even be that Xavi is happy to see him leave at the end of the season. With Newcastle potentially looking like having a big summer in the transfer market, especially if they qualify for the Champions League, it looks as though they may turn to the winger.

FC Barcelona's Raphinha reacts.

Could Newcastle snap up Raphinha this summer?

Writing for Football Insider, O'Rourke claimed that the Magpies are keeping an eye on Raphinha's situation, should Barca be willing to listen to offers:

"It is my understanding that Newcastle are also monitoring Raphinha's situation at Barcelona. Eddie Howe is a huge admirer of the 26-year-old winger and views him as a direct upgrade to his starting XI at St James’ Park.

"Newcastle have previously considered a move for Raphinha but a move is viewed as more realistic this summer because of the club’s imminent qualification for the Champions League.

"Raphinha is open to a Premier League return if forced out by Barcelona, but only to a team competing in the Champions League. Newcastle are willing to meet the £50-60million asking price set by Barcelona."

Raphinha could be a brilliant signing by Newcastle if they are able to sign him this summer, possessing the pace, trickery and unpredictability that can be a nightmare to play against.

The five-goal and 16-cap Brazil international is a proven Premier League player, registering 29 goal contributions (17 goals and 12 assists) in 67 appearances in the competition, while former Leeds teammate Dan James once described him as a "magician" of a footballer.

Raphinha could jump at the chance to be a star man at St James' Park, possibly even be viewed as an upgrade on Miguel Almiron despite the excellent season he has enjoyed for Newcastle, and he would instantly enhance the squad depth at Eddie Howe's disposal.

Aston Villa Losing £80k-p/w "Machine" Was Worse Than Grealish Sale

Aston Villa have endured a tumultuous past decade or so, consisting of Championship football, Premier League football, and all the trials and tribulations that straddling that line can bring.

As such, the club have experienced both great loss and euphoric highs, arguably none more so than seeing their academy graduate Jack Grealish lead the club back to the big time.

Not only that, but the 27-year-old would only go from strength to strength, establishing himself as one of the top division's most creative threats from the left wing.

His final season at Villa Park saw him score six and assist 12, unsurprisingly drawing suitors. However, few would have expected a British transfer record to be smashed to pry him away. Manchester City, however, willingly paid the £100m asking price.

It shocked fans and likely staff alike, but it was an offer that could not be refused. It injected precious funds to reinvest in the squad as a whole and ultimately has kept the club afloat since.

Therefore, it could be argued that the meagre sale of Idrissa Gana Gueye was far more of a gut punch, considering the profit Everton would eventually earn because of the Villans' inability to stay in the league.

How much did Idrissa Gueye cost Everton?

Having featured heavily for the Midlands side, the Senegalese midfielder was incapable of stopping their miserable relegation which activated his release clause. The Toffees were willing suitors, and he would join for just £7.1m, leaving Roberto Di Matteo with no choice.

He has since gone on to star, leave for huge money, and even make a comeback for a cut price.

The 33-year-old has now made 132 appearances for the Merseyside club, with the apex of his career at Goodison Park arguably coming in his debut year.

He would maintain a 7.25 average rating whilst upholding a mammoth 4.1 tackles, 2.5 interceptions and 0.8 key passes per 90 (via Sofascore).

idrissa-gana-gueye-lionel-messi-aston-villa-transfer

Gueye was everywhere, and he could do everything. This was form that would hardly relent too, eventually encouraging French champions Paris Saint-Germain to spend a mouth-watering £30m for his services. Thomas Tuchel then quickly became enamoured with the current £80k-per-week maestro too, branding him a "machine".

Not only had Villa lost his exploits on the pitch, but an enormous sum of money too. It is for this reason that his exit was far worse than Grealish's, as the English wide man did not leave unceremoniously.

The Cityzens star would exit in triumphant fashion, forcing a huge fee to be paid that allowed him to reach the pinnacle of world football. Meanwhile, Gueye was only joining a club of similar stature to theirs for next to nothing. It was embarrassing, frustrating, and a microcosm of their failures of the time.

Fortunately, there is now a new dawn under Unai Emery, who promises to once again bring them back to where they belong. They can continue to do so due to the money gained from that 2021 sale, not from the measly fee gained in 2016.
