Chelsea signed the OG Pedro under Poch, now he's been sold for a big loss

If we just ignore the minor injury crisis, this looks set to be an incredibly exciting campaign for Chelsea.

Granted, Enzo Maresca’s side did drop points in their Premier League season opener, but back-to-back wins against London competition have proven that they’re a better team than last year.

That shouldn’t be much of a surprise, though, as the Blues made a host of brilliant signings over the summer, including Joao Pedro, who already looks more than settled.

That said, Todd Boehly and Co will hope he keeps up the good form as they’ve already made a significant loss on someone who’s been compared to him.

Joao Pedro's start to life at Chelsea

Chelsea were quick to sign Pedro this summer, paying Brighton & Hove Albion around £60m and bringing him in before the end of the Club World Cup campaign.

It was a good thing they did, as the Brazilian made an instant impact, scoring three goals in three appearances in the competition, including one in the final against Champions League champions Paris Saint-Germain.

His brilliant form continued into pre-season with a couple of goals against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, before his first blank in the season opener against Crystal Palace.

Chelsea forward Joao Pedro

However, you can’t keep such an incredible player down for too long, and away to West Ham United, the former Watford ace got back up and running with a headed goal, and then he grabbed another goal at home to Fulham on Saturday.

In all, it’s hard to think of another signing in the Premier League this season who has got off to as good a start as the prolific forward has.

It’s not just the goals either, as the 23-year-old dynamo has also provided two assists in the league so far, and his overall play makes him stand out wherever he is on the pitch.

Interestingly, Chelsea signed a player who has been compared to Pedro, but instead of him becoming a success in West London, he was just sold for a sizable loss.

Chelsea's former Pedro

Given the number of players Chelsea have signed over the years, it’s no surprise that they’ve had more than their fair share of duds.

Where Are They Now

Yet, unlike many teams, the Blues are remarkably good at either minimising their losses on these players or even making a small profit on them.

Unfortunately, that did not happen with Christopher Nkunku.

The French international joined the Blues under former boss Mauricio Pochettino in the summer of 2023 for a fee of around £52m, and after two disappointing years in West London, was sold for up to £36m to AC Milan this summer.

While that isn’t too bad a fee to get for the player, it does represent a £16m loss, which is quite sizable for a player who has been compared to Pedro.

Yes, the former RB Leipzig gem, who could only muster a tally of 18 goals and five assists in 62 appearances for the Blues, has been likened to Maresca’s new star.

The comparison stems from FBref, which has concluded that the new Milan man was the sixth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the former Brighton ace in the Premier League last season.

We can see how such a conclusion was reached by delving into some of the underlying numbers in which the pair ranked so closely.

These include metrics such as non-penalty goals plus assists, key passes, shot and goal-creating actions and more, all per 90.

These numbers do suggest that the underwhelming Frenchman is still a talented attacker, but just someone who could not get to grips with life in the Premier League and turn good underlying numbers into concrete results.

Away from the stats, the other similarity between the two players is their ability to start in various positions, from up top to out wide and even in attacking midfield.

Ultimately, Pedro looks like the real deal for Chelsea, and while there is always a chance things don’t work out, it feels like he’ll succeed where Nkunku failed.

England player ratings vs Latvia: Harry Kane keeps up superb form and Anthony Gordon impresses as Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions seal World Cup qualification in style

A typically insatiable Harry Kane fired England to the 2026 World Cup as the captain scored twice in the 5-0 hammering of Latvia which extended the Three Lions' 100 percent record in qualifying. Kane, who had missed Thursday's friendly win over Wales with an ankle injury, returned to set a new England record by scoring more than once for the 13th time in international football to move on to 76 goals for his country.

Anthony Gordon set England on their way to a sixth consecutive win in World Cup qualifying by scoring in the 26th minute, latching onto a defence-splitting ball from John Stones and cutting inside onto his right foot before sweeping into the far bottom corner.

Kane then struck twice in the space of four minutes to effectively seal qualification before the half-time whistle had gone. First he curled in a left-footed strike from outside the box after aggressive pressing from Bukayo Saka and then dispatched a penalty which he had earned after being pulled down by Latvia captain Antonijs Cernomordijs.

England didn't rest on their laurels in the second half and scored again with little effort thanks to a comical own goal, Maksims Tonisevs diverting a Djed Spence cross – which was going well wide – into his own net before substitute Eberechi Eze capped a near-perfect night for Thomas Tuchel's side by scoring a splendid fifth goal.

GOAL rates England's players from Daugava Stadium…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Jordan Pickford (6/10):

Another relaxing outing for a goalkeeper who last conceded for England one year ago and has kept nine consecutive clean sheets. He didn't have to deal with any shots on target yet again, only facing one in the qualifying campaign thus far.

    Djed Spence (7/10):

An impressive first competitive start for England in which he also demonstrated his ability to perform at right-back as well on the left. Busy attacking in both halves and played a part in the fourth goal, albeit thanks to Tonisev's clumsiness.

    Ezri Konsa (7/10):

Calm yet assertive back in the centre of defence and meant England barely missed Guehi, who was given the chance to rest. Produced a chest-thumping moment when he raced back and slid in to prevent Gutkovskis from almost certainly scoring.

    John Stones (7/10):

An excellent demonstration of his ball-playing qualities as he provided a regular supply of balls to midfield and opened the floodgates with his sumptuous pass to Gordon. England will be so much better off next summer if he can stay fit.

    Myles Lewis-Skelly (6/10):

Should have made more of a rare start given his reduced opportunities at Arsenal this season. Didn't attack with usual freedom and was shown up by Spence on the other flank.

    Midfield

    Declan Rice (7/10):

Patrolled the midfield with his usual authority, although he didn't get forward as much as he would have liked. Earned a rest and was taken off on the hour-mark.

    Elliot Anderson (7/10):

Another seamless England performance which consolidated his place in the starting XI. Played a dictating role, although will be annoyed not to have scored his first Three Lions goal when he skewed wide inside the area.

    Morgan Rogers (5/10):

A bit of a comedown from his show-stopping display against Wales as he couldn't get involved in the attacking play and was among the first to be taken off.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Attack

    Bukayo Saka (7/10):

Showed his pestering side by pressing to win the ball when Kane scored England's second and drove the move which led to the own goal. Got a well-earned rest as he was removed on the hour-mark.

    Harry Kane (8/10):

Back with a bang and yet another England record. Could have struck early on when he narrowly failed to connect with a cross but made amends with his brilliantly-taken goal and showed hunger to earn the penalty.

    Anthony Gordon (8/10):

Showed why Tuchel didn't need to call up Grealish. Terrorised Latvia with his turn of pace and trickery, scored an excellent goal and ensured England look dangerous every time they came forward.

    Subs & Manager

    Jordan Henderson (6/10):

Comfortably took the baton from Rice to continue England's dominance in midfield.

    Jarrod Bowen (7/10):

Showed hunger to win the ball and then drive forward to set up Eze to score.

    Eberechi Eze (8/10):

Produced a wonderful goal to show that he can be a reliable 'finisher' for his country as well as his club.

    Marcus Rashford (7/10):

Showed lots of trickery and pace, highlighting how his loan spell for Barcelona can benefit England.

    Dan Burn (6/10):

Made a good tackle although it does not reflect too well that Latvia had two good chances when he was on the pitch.

    Thomas Tuchel (8/10):

His project is truly taking shape and this was a third successive impressive display which bodes well for his chances of taking England deep at the World Cup.

Porter six-for trumps Brookes onslaught as Essex seal first win

Jamie Porter helped wrap up a nervy first Rothesay County Championship victory of the season for Essex on the final day against Worcestershire with the 22nd five-wicket haul of his career. The 31-year-old pace bowler, the leading wicket-taker in Division One last season, added three more wickets to the three he had taken the day before as Worcestershire were bowled out for 266, 28 runs short of their target. Porter finished with 6 for 52 from 24.4 overs. However, the victory was not achieved without some belated anxiety. The 23-year-old allrounder Ethan Brookes, patience personified earlier in his innings, threw caution to the wind when the ninth wicket went down and launched a one-man pyrotechnic show that included seven sixes in a scintillating 88 from 105 balls before becoming Porter’s final victim.”When we got them two wickets down early on I thought we’d get it done before the second new ball,” Porter said. “But that was one hell of an innings by Ethan Brookes. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt about Worcestershire, it’s they don’t give in. They push you all the way to the end. So a lot of credit to them to a) get into the position they were at this morning, where it felt we were slight favourites, and b) literally from the jaws of defeat to put themselves in a position where they almost won it.”With Jacob Duffy blocking at the other end for 0 not out off 12, Brookes helped Worcestershire add 64 for the tenth wicket. His dismissal was not without controversy, too, as Brookes initially stood his ground after Porter rushed in to take a caught-and-bowled right under the batter’s nose.”He was within his rights to question the wicket, but I was 100 percent certain I’d taken it,” Porter said. “I’ve never claimed a catch that wasn’t clean in my career, not that I’ve been in that position too often. But I’m 100 percent certain it carried and the umpire at point confirmed it.”He’s [Brookes] obviously disappointed because he felt like he deserved to be on the right end of that result, and I agree the way he played he did deserve to be on the winning side. But that’s the way it goes.”Both teams arrived on day four believing they not only could win but would win. Worcestershire needed 110 more runs and Essex required four wickets. They also needed to get it completed before forecast rain arrived during the afternoon. That Essex had dug themselves out of a hole after being dismissed for 179 in the first innings and being able to set a target of 295, was largely due to Paul Walter’s century, the highest score on a hybrid wicket that was a seamer’s paradise. To prove that point, Porter extracted some extra bounce from the pitch to claim his fourth wicket of the innings with the second ball of his second over of an overcast morning. Worcestershire had only added a quickly scampered single to their overnight 185 for 6 when Matthew Waite played on to depart for 27 after a painstaking two-hour stay.Worcestershire were still 103 runs away from celebrating their own first win of the campaign when Tom Taylor got a thick edge to another lifting delivery from Porter and was caught at first slip by Walter. Kasun Rajitha, replacing Porter in the attack, then knocked out Ben Allison’s leg stump to leave Worcestershire on the precipice.Once the game was all over bar the shouting, Brookes decided to have some fun, smashing Simon Harmer for six over cow corner and then scooping and sweeping Rajitha for maximums off successive balls. His fourth six, again off Harmer and over Snater’s head on the square-leg boundary, took him to a 73-ball fifty.Another six, his fifth in five overs, landed in the Tom Pearce Stand at the River End before Porter returned to take the new-ball with Worcestershire still requiring 53 to win.A sixth six, this one hit back over Snater’s head, brought up the fifty partnership for the last wicket, in 38 balls, of which Duffy had contributed exactly nought. Even Porter came in for some treatment when Brookes deposited him over fine leg for six No. 7. But next ball, Brookes lobbed the ball up and Porter dived forward to claim the catch.Worcestershire head coach, Alan Richardson, said: “It was a remarkable innings from Ethan. It just showed the skill level he has and the ability. It was amazing to watch from a position where for love and money it didn’t look like we were going to get so close. For him to produce something like that should give him a great deal of confidence.”The coaching staff here have known Ethan for a long time so when he left Warwickshire we knew there was something there. He got his maiden first-class hundred against Hampshire last year on a spin-friendly wicket was also an amazing innings, and very similar to that in the tempo he played. We believe we’ve got an exciting cricketer.”Yes, he did throw the kitchen sink at a few but the way he conducted himself and the fact Jacob [Duffy] faced so few balls was real testament to an intellect cricketer, someone who knew how to go about it. You talk about throwing caution to the wind, I think there was an element of freedom about how he went about it. He’s an excellent cricketer.”

Spurs flop was prematurely sold by Conte, now he's outperforming Kudus

Tottenham Hotspur have splashed the cash over the last couple of years to try and catapult themselves to a Premier League title fight – but so far, to no avail.

The Lilywhites’ 15th-placed Premier League finish last campaign showcases the size of the task Thomas Frank has on his hands, but there’s no doubt he will be backed by the hierarchy in due course.

Just last summer, the board splashed a club-record fee of £65m to land Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth, with the Englishman seen as a replacement for Harry Kane.

Mammoth funds have also been spent on the likes of Xavi Simons and Brennan Johnson, subsequently adding further depth and quality to the club’s attacking department.

However, despite the addition of the former during the recent window, he was also joined by another talent late on in the summer – in a move that will offer further competition for places.

How Frank can get the best out of Kudus

Despite the previous additions made during the summer transfer window, Mohammed Kudus was the most expensive addition made by the hierarchy, costing a fee in the region of £55m.

The former West Ham United star undoubtedly ruffled the feathers of the Hammers faithful with his move across the capital to link up with Frank’s side during the off-season.

The 25-year-old started the clash against Graham Potter’s side last weekend, failing to get on the scoresheet, but proving that he made the right decision after the 3-0 triumph.

His debut against Burnley saw him bag two assists for Richarlison, but he’s failed to register a single goal contribution since the opening day – which could leave the Dane scratching his head for ways to recapture his best form.

Kudus is at his best when driving at the opposition – as seen by his assists against Scott Parker’s men – with Frank needing to give the attacker licence to drive and try and beat the opposition on a consistent basis.

However, the hierarchy may have been better off keeping hold of another talent, given his recent form elsewhere after his transfer away from the capital a couple of years ago.

The Spurs star who’s now outperforming Simons

Back in November 2021, Spurs appointed Antonio Conte as the successor to Nuno Espírito Santo, but the Italian’s time in charge was certainly one to forget for all involved with the club.

Whilst he achieved a 53% win rate in charge of the Lilywhites, his off-the-field antics caught the eye most – often leading to various moments of controversy.

From touchline clashes with Thomas Tuchel, to rants in press conferences, his spell was littered with questionable moments which led to his demise in North London.

His dealings in the transfer market also led to questions being asked, with the sale of Steven Bergwijn in the summer of 2022 one that could come back to bite the club.

The Dutchman racked up 83 appearances for the club, scoring eight times in the process – with his best effort arguably coming in his first outing in the capital.

He scored a superb effort against Manchester City on home soil, securing a 2-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s men back in the 2020/21 campaign before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite making 32 appearances in his final campaign, he would be sold back to Ajax in his homeland – before joining Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad in the summer of 2024.

Bergwijn, who’s been labelled “sensational” by one analyst, has scored 18 goals since the start of last season – a tally higher than that of Kudus, who’s only managed five in the same time period.

The Dutchman has also notched nine assists in that time, also outperforming the Ghanaian, who’s only managed six – further highlighting his superb levels of performance since leaving North London.

His subsequent tallies showcase that he still possesses a whole heap of quality that could’ve been of use to Frank if the previous management teams had kept hold of the attacker.

However, he will forever remain a case of what could have been, with Frank needing to put trust into Kudus to continue his fine start to life under his guidance.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani has said the team’s ongoing Test against England is a “defining moment” that “underscores the importance of inclusive participation in the game’s most revered format.”The Trent Bridge Test is Zimbabwe’s first Test in England since 2003, and their first international game across formats in the country since 2004. After the four-day Test, Zimbabwe will also play a four-day game against South Africa in Arundel from June 3 to 6.”Zimbabwe’s return to Test cricket in England marks a proud and defining moment – not only for our team but for the global cricket community,” Mukuhlani said in a statement. “It reflects our continued growth as a cricketing nation and underscores the importance of inclusive participation in the game’s most revered format.Related

“Test cricket remains the ultimate measure of skill, character and endurance. For it to thrive, all Test-playing nations – especially smaller teams like ours – must be afforded meaningful opportunities to compete regularly, including against top-tier opposition.”This match against England is more than just a contest – it is a celebration of Test cricket’s enduring power to inspire, challenge and unite. It reaffirms our conviction that the red-ball game must remain at the heart of cricket’s future, with teams like Zimbabwe playing a full and active role at its core.”After a tough first day, on which England scored 498 for 3 before declaring on 565 for 6 on the second morning, Zimbabwe responded positively with opener Brian Bennett scoring a hundred off 97 balls. It was the fastest Test hundred by a Zimbabwean and he is only their third batter to score one against England.Since making their Test comeback in 2011, Zimbabwe have played 40 matches in 14 years – an average of just under three Tests a year – but they have 11 Tests lined up in 2025.

Pakistan look to fine-tune new approach against deflated Bangladesh

Big picture

The Mike Hesson era in Pakistan cricket began just about as well as could be expected, Pakistan’s complete performance giving them a straightforward victory over Bangladesh. More than the result, it was the mindset Salman Agha’s side took into the game that suggests it may be the start of something promising. Despite the loss of two early wickets and a sluggish start, the Pakistan batters continued to attack, and Nos. 3-6 produced scores between 31 and 56. Crucially, all of them boasted strike rates between 164 and 200, when traditionally an anchoring role in the middle may have chipped a chunk off their total.Topping it up was a complete bowling performance, too. Bangladesh were never allowed to keep pace with the asking rate as Pakistan continued to bruise them with regular wickets. The returning Hasan Ali continued the form he produced in the PSL, his career-best figures of 5 for 30 the cherry on top of a perfect Pakistan start. For Bangladesh, the picture is significantly less rosy. A bright start with the ball was a false dawn as the visitors found themselves outplayed through much of the rest of the game. Most notably, it was their spinners – a skillset Bangladesh rightly take pride in – who found themselves rendered ineffective, Mahedi Hasan and Rishad Hossain leaking 91 in their eight overs. With Pakistan adopting a big-hitting power game, Bangladesh will also be aware of how unfavourably their own appears to compare. Pakistan’s bowling attack is by no means the most economical, but tellingly, Bangladesh appeared unable to take the attack to them early, consequently easing pressure off the bowlers. Flashes from captain Litton Das and Jaker Ali weren’t nearly substantial enough and received little support from their team-mates as Bangladesh crumpled to defeat. However, Pakistan’s new system is still finding its feet, with the variance between a good performance and a poor one likely significant. Bangladesh’s game style offers a more stable level of baseline performance, one that, should they reproduce in either of the remaining games, could see them give Pakistan trouble.

In the spotlight

The only downside for Pakistan during a fairly complete performance was Haris Rauf’s figures of 0 for 36 in three. The Lahore Qalandars fast bowler had a difficult PSL in terms of economy, a poor run that appears to have continued into this series. Even when he bowled towards the tail-end of the game with the jeopardy taken out, he found himself being targeted by Jaker, and ended up as the most expensive fast bowler on either side. At his best, Haris has offered precious control in the middle and later overs of T20 innings, and for a more rounded bowling attack, Pakistan need him to rediscover that prowess.Jaker Ali is one of the few in-form batters for Bangladesh•Randy Brooks

Jaker Ali struck some meaty blows on Wednesday, once more confirming his growing stature as a gritty, aggressive cricketer. His penchant for refusing to give up in difficult situations has seen regard for him improve within Bangladesh cricket circles, and in a side where big hitting is in short supply, Jaker fills a crucial hole. He is also one of the few in-form batters in the side, and it would not be a surprise if he earns a promotion up the order.

Team news

While Pakistan may use this series to try things out, they may not want to tweak much after a well-rounded performance in the first game. If anything, Abbas Afridi may come in for Haris Rauf.Pakistan (probable): 1 Fakhar Zaman, 2 Saim Ayub, 3 Mohammad Haris (wk), 4 Hasan Nawaz, 5 Salman Agha (capt), 6 Shadab Khan, 7 Khushdil Shah, 8 Faheem Ashraf, 9 Haris Rauf/Abbas Afridi, 10 Hasan Ali, 11 Abrar AhmedBangladesh may want to bring Najmul Hossain Shanto back into the XI, but it isn’t who played and who didn’t that resulted in Wednesday’s defeat so much as a flat performance across the board.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tanzid Hasan, 2 Parvez Hossain Emon, 3 Litton Das (capt), 4 Towhid Hridoy, 5 Jaker Ali (wk), 6 Shamim Hossain, 7 Mahedi Hasan, 8 Rishad Hossain, 9 Tanzim Hasan, 10 Hasan Mahmud, 11 Shoriful IslamTowhid Hridoy rebuilt slowly for Bangladesh•Associated Press

Pitch and conditions

The weather conditions are unlikely to change, with hot and dry weather expected throughout the series. A fresh pitch will be used, but expect the same old batting-friendly conditions.

Lá no fundo do gol adversário.

E A ETAPA FINAL?

Frank contacts £426k-a-week star "directly" over joining Tottenham in January

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is weighing in on the club’s January recruitment plans after a solid start to life at N17.

Tottenham put international break curse behind them after Leeds win

Before their latest victory at Leeds United, thanks largely to a Man of the Match display from in-form summer signing Mohammed Kudus, Spurs had suffered defeat in seven of their last seven matches prior to an international break.

A run of two consecutive Premier League draws in the build up to Leeds, not to mention a disappointing share of the spoils away to Norwegian minnows Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League, perhaps told a sign that Frank’s side could’ve been on to extend that bizarre record.

However, a gritty, resilient display on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Yorkshire saw Frank’s side come away with all three points, despite Leeds battling to the very bitter end and ferociously knocking on Spurs’ door.

Tottenham not only put that international break voodoo behind them, but they also became the first side to beat Leeds at Elland Road for over a year in the league.

It took a couple of crucial saves from Guglielmo Vicario to thwart Leeds’ attempts to get on the scoresheet for a second time, and Frank can also give a special nod to Mathys Tel, who opened the scoring after being given the starting nod ahead of Richarlison.

Dominic Solanke’s niggling ankle problem, which required minor surgery, means that Richarlison has started up top in almost every game for Spurs so far, but there are doubts that the hot and cold Brazil international can be relied upon.

Spurs are hopeful Solanke could return just after the October international break, but fitness issues have been a real issue for the Englishman since his move from Bournemouth last year.

As such, the Lilywhites are being linked with a new striker, and it is believed that former Brentford star Ivan Toney is on their radar.

Frank worked with Toney during his peak years at the Gtech Community Stadium, with the 29-year-old bagging 20 Premier League goals in the 2022/2023 season.

Since moving to Al-Ahli in 2024, Toney has scored for fun, racking up 30 strikes in 44 appearances over his debut campaign and eight goals from 10 run outs already this season.

Thomas Frank contacts Ivan Toney over joining Tottenham in January

According to a report from Indy News, Spurs could now offer the £426,000-per-week talisman a chance to make a return to his homeland.

Indeed, it is believed that Frank has personally contacted Toney over joining Tottenham on loan in January, with Chelsea named as another suitor as both sides ponder bringing in a new centre-forward mid-season.

It is unclear whether Al-Ahli would sanction a temporary move away for the number nine who’s been their arguable star player since joining, but Frank has previously lavished praise on Toney as a “remarkable” striker, so it is clear why he’d be keen to reunite with him in North London.
