How Hobart Hurricanes' Pakistan connection came together

Shadab Khan was a key part of the club’s planning and has already shown why

Cameron Ponsonby29-Dec-2022A friend makes bionic limbs. Back when he was studying for his masters, he went to his supervisor with a question about a process he had been following.”Potentially a stupid question,” he put to the tutor, “but I’ve noticed everyone does this thing that way. But why can’t we do it this way?””I don’t know,” came the reply. Six months later and bionic limb friend would give a presentation to an international audience on his discovery.Sometimes it pays to ask why not. In August at this season’s BBL draft, Hobart Hurricanes set tongues wagging after they pursued a unique draft strategy that saw them tap up an under-utilised corner of cricketing talent: Pakistan.Related

“Surprised everyone,” was one review. “An interesting tactic,” another. “Punter [Ricky Ponting] explains draft gamble,” a third. The assessments were accurate, in that Hurricanes had departed from convention, with no other team picking a single Pakistani player (Usman Qadir has since joined Sydney Thunder as a replacement) and Hurricanes choosing three. But also confusing, in that there doesn’t seem to be a reason why Hurricanes’ noteworthy strategy should be of such, well, note. This isn’t the IPL, there’s no ban on signing them here. And sign them Hurricanes did. What’s more, in Shadab Khan, Asif Ali and Faheem Ashraf, Hurricanes’ “draft gamble” saw them bring together the three most internationally experienced players of any teams’ picks, with 181 caps between them. Sydney Thunder were next closest with 144; Adelaide Strikers further off the pace with 115.In particular, Shadab was their man. At the very first planning meeting months out from the draft the view was that the team was in need of a power-hitting, spin-bowling allrounder. Cue months of conversations going round-and-around in circles as all parties aggressively agreed with each other that Shadab, yes, Shadab, was the one they wanted.

I always talked with Darren [Berry] about the basics because [in Pakistan] we don’t have coaches since childhood, we’re self-made players so he helped me with all this stuffShadab Khan

The only problem for Hurricanes was that they had the last pick on auction day. But, if the last few months have proved anything, it’s that they were placing value where others weren’t. And Shadab went unpicked.”We could have alleviated two and a half months of planning,” head coach Jeff Vaughan said, in a sod’s law sort of a way, “but we’re really pleased to get our man.”In addition to a global superstar in Shadab, they added Asif, a powerful middle-order batter who represented Pakistan in the recent T20 World Cup. Asif’s pick was a surprise to most, but again, the best case scenario for Hurricanes.”We were very pleased to get Shadab into Asif Ali,” Vaughan said. “Another of our first two picks.”In a sport increasingly focused on marginal gains buried in laptops, Hurricanes were picking cash off the ground that everyone else was too busy to notice. This connection with Pakistan isn’t a coincidence. Vaughan spent time in the country earlier this year when he was coaching with Australia while Ricky Ponting, the head of strategy, has long been a public advocate of Pakistan’s white-ball talent. But the real link comes through assistant coach Darren Berry who spent two years coaching at Islamabad United alongside the late Dean Jones.”It was a brilliant experience with Dean Jones and Darren,” says Shadab, who worked extensively with the pair when they headed up the team.”I always talked with Darren about the basics because [in Pakistan] we don’t have coaches since childhood, we’re self-made players so he helped me with all this stuff. I spent two years in Islamabad with Darren so it’s good for me because in a new set-up, the coach is the same.”For all the money that gets handed around franchise leagues, you can’t put a price on the importance of personal relationships. And it was Ponting in particular who wished to lean on this. Cricket is a global game, but it would be naive to assume that coming from overseas will always be plain sailing. Playing alongside those you know from home can help make the transition easier. Not only are Shadab, Asif and Faheem countrymen, but they are all club-mates too, with Islamabad.”It’s brilliant,” says Shadab of being signed alongside Asif. “Because it’s not usually we play like that when we play in overseas leagues. I play a lot so my English is a bit better, but it means I can help Asif. Because [the] accent is a bit difficult for me,” he adds with a laugh. “Sometimes even I don’t understand and I can take care of him as well.”It was certainly something we discussed throughout,” Vaughan said of Hurricanes’ focus on ensuring as welcoming and friendly an environment as possible. “I mean number one was to pick the best players. But we all know when we play cricket and when we travel the world with people that we know or we’re comfortable with and we’re friends with, it makes your time and your experience a hell of a lot a lot easier.”And just seeing Shadab and Asif for the last week and a half has been great, they’re like brothers, they really are.”Asif Ali almost stole a remarkable victory at the SCG•Cricket Australia/Getty ImagesHurricanes have been rewarded on the pitch for looking after their players off it. Shadab has hit the ground running with contributions with both bat and ball, and Asif contributed with a fantastic, but ultimately doomed, innings 44 off 13 balls in their loss against the Sydney Sixers. Meanwhile, Faheem is soon to join up after unexpectedly being called to the Test squad against England. The theoretical availability of Pakistan players had been the final piece of the puzzle for Hurricanes’ strategy although these best laid plans have nonetheless been partially undermined. Shadab leaves in January for a white-ball series which was expected, but Faheem’s inclusion in the Test side was not, with Zak Crawley and Jimmy Neesham chosen as replacements respectively.”Faheem was one that we planned on probably not being in the [England] Test series,” Vaughan said. “I’m very pleased for him that he did get selected, but that was certainly part of the strategy, weighing up the best players, but also their availability. And I think most teams went down that route of not necessarily selecting the best players who can only play four or five games. Longevity was a fair bit of it as well.”Historically and currently, English players have had the strongest ties with the BBL. And in particular, second-string England players, as their availability is often all but perfect. But now with global T20 sands shifting, the BBL could see other sides following Hurricanes’ example. Of particular significance is that the two new competing T20 tournaments, the ILT20 and SA20, are all-but completely Indian owned. Of the ILT20s six teams, five are run by Indian business with the only Pakistani player signed, Azam Khan, being picked up by the sole American franchise Desert Vipers. Meanwhile, the SA20’s six teams are all owned by the same companies that operate the IPL and has seen no Pakistanis signed, although the league has stated they wish for Pakistan players to be involved in the future.A caveat here is that Pakistan’s home white-ball series against New Zealand and the West Indies means availability of their top players would have been poor, but it nonetheless plays into the creeping fear of Pakistan cricket that as the IPL spreads its wings, their players may be further marginalised and denied opportunities in global leagues. How fictional or far away that reality is doesn’t really matter today. The monster under the bed may not be real, but it still keeps people up at night. An ever more powerful IPL is unlikely to be good news if you’re a player from Pakistan. Which, in contrast, makes tournaments such as the Hundred or the BBL that are board-owned a more attractive and likely destination for Pakistan’s stars. For the BBL, Pakistan offers available, high quality players. Which begs the question, why spend your life doing way, when you could be doing it .

England players at the IPL, week one: Jofra Archer, six-hitter, and Eoin Morgan makes a mark

All the action and talking points around England’s IPL contingent after the opening week

Andrew Miller28-Sep-2020England’s IPL cricketers have swapped a summer of bio-secure bubbles at the Ageas Bowl and Old Trafford for the sunnier climes of the UAE, and after an opportunity for competitive action denied to many of their colleagues and rivals at the tournament, they have for the most part hit the ground running in this year’s event. Here’s a quick run-down of who’s done what in the first week.Jofra Archer, finisher extraordinaireHow much simpler might England’s run-chase in the World Cup final have been had Jofra Archer found the six-hitting form that he’s located in Sharjah this past week? Archer, remember, had a shot to nothing at Lord’s last summer, one ball to face at the end of the penultimate over against New Zealand, with 15 still needed and Ben Stokes at the other end. He duly had his stumps splintered by Jimmy Neesham. But in the ludicrously bat-dominant conditions in Sharjah, he’s found his range – a total of 40 match-turning runs from 11 balls, with his six sixes including four in the space of two legal deliveries from Lungi Ngidi, which has to be some sort of a record. In the day job, Archer’s continued the smooth form he showed against Australia earlier this month – his stand-out figures of 1 for 26 were crucial against CSK, and while he received a bit of treatment from Nicholas Pooran at the death against KXIP, he’s hardly been alone in that, as Ngidi and Sheldon Cottrell, among many others, can testify.

Sharjah’s challenge gives Tom Curran early food for thoughtWho’d be a bowler at Sharjah, least of all a bowler whose methods revolve around subtlety and variation – factors that count for little when the conditions are so sweaty that your fingers lose their grip, and when the boundaries are short enough to reach with any old mishit. It has been a challenging week for Curran with the ball, who’s gone for 98 runs in eight overs, with barely a yorker in sight – his logic being that an accidental full toss, and the resulting free hit, would be more damaging than a standard smack through a length ball. But he’s shown his ticker in the tough circumstances nonetheless, not least with the bat, where he coolly cracked the winning runs from his solitary ball in Sunday night’s thriller. Oh, and he also got one-up on his brother in their personal match-up against CSK.Sam Curran shines for an otherwise flat CSKSam Curran Makes Things Happen. England have known this for months, and CSK are finding it out too, with their baby-faced acquisition living up to his £590,000 price tag in three sparky displays with bat and ball. Five wickets at an economy rate of 7.33 is outstanding by any standards, especially given that he’s one of the few to emerge intact from the carnage at Sharjah, his skiddy left-armers returning 3 for 33 in defeat against Rajasthan. He deserved better against Delhi too, an outstanding death over yielding four runs and a wicket before CSK’s batting fell away again. But even on that front, he’s bucked the trend with some ebullient smiting. With 36 runs from 14 balls in three innings, he’s been willing to die without wondering, unlike some of his more senior colleagues.Sam Curran goes big•BCCIEngland’s senior statesman quietly makes his markFor a man who’s been an irregular presence at the IPL for more than a decade now, Eoin Morgan hasn’t had an awful lot to write home about in his previous six seasons – a highest score of 66 and a career strike-rate of 120, which is almost 20 points lower than his England mark. But Morgan’s fabled unflappability has an added value now that he is a World Cup-winning captain, and he proved the perfect sidekick for Shubman Gill with 42 not out from 29 in KKR’s first win of the campaign, an unbroken 92-run stand sealing their chase against Sunrisers after three early wickets.Death-over woes leave Jordan in limboChris Jordan played just one match in each of the 2017 and 2018 IPLs before going unselected in 2019, and well … who knows quite when he’ll get another opportunity in 2020 after a debut to forget for KXIP. His death-bowling wiles have been a hit for England in recent years, but his franchise form has been less spectacular, and Marcus Stoinis took him to the cleaners in Dubai, bludgeoning a record-equalling 30 runs from his final over. Even then, Jordan had a shot at redemption, as he took strike for the final ball of the match with the scores tied … and shovelled a full-toss to square leg.7:14

Jonny Bairstow was reckless against Yuzvendra Chahal – Tom Moody

Why did Jonny do that?It was all going so well in Jonny Bairstow’s opening match of the campaign. Sunrisers were cruising on 121 for 2 with 43 still needed from 30 balls against RCB. With 61 calmly compiled runs from 41, Jonny’s only job was to stay there to the end. Instead, he lost his head with an outrageous head-in-the-air heave at Yuzvendra Chahal, the one man in the attack it would have been prudent to see off. Vijay Shankar was done in one ball later as Sunrisers lost their last seven in 27 to lose by 10. Bairstow wasn’t able to atone against KKR either, a sticky start coming to an even stickier end against Pat Cummins in a seven-wicket loss.Jos Buttler’s quiet re-emergenceHe missed RR’s first match against CSK while remaining in quarantine with his family, and he missed out in the bunfight against KXIP too – just four runs from seven balls as his first attacking stroke resulted in a sharp low catch at midwicket. It’s fair to presume that someone, somewhere, will be made to pay before long. And the bench-warmersMoeen Ali (RCB) and Tom Banton (KKR) are waiting in the wings for their first outings of the tournament. Ben Stokes (RR), meanwhile, has been getting his bowling boots back on in New Zealand, and could yet return from compassionate leave in early October.

Celtic now facing fresh transfer blow as Liverpool push to sign Hoops wonderkid

Liverpool are now reportedly pushing to sign a Celtic youngster in what could deal the Hoops a frustrating blow ahead of Wilfried Nancy’s arrival.

O'Neill: Celtic have restored "confidence"

As far as interim managers go, Celtic couldn’t have done a lot better than Martin O’Neill. There would have been concerns that the 73-year-old was out of ideas in the modern game, but he’s since proved any doubters wrong by getting the Bhoys back on track and rolling back the years.

Signing off in style in his final European game, Celtic secured a much-needed victory against Feyenoord on Thursday evening and O’Neill admitted that “confidence” has been restored in the squad.

The veteran manager told reporters: “Judging from last season, the format, you are looking for 10 or 11 points to qualify. It won’t be easy, but Celtic have two home games and the confidence is in the side now.

“I told my two brothers who came to the game to start my chant, so they must have done so. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts. In the dressing room, the lads are full of it.

“It’s hard to say what I thought [when I took charge]. My two daughters were all in on going for it, but my wife said I would probably mess it up. I haven’t messed it up so far. It’s been great. The results are what you live by and they’ve been terrific.

“[The new manager] has got some players who are big winners, which is great. I’m sure he will lean on some of those lads and then it’s about improving some of the other players.

“The restoration of confidence is big and it’s keeping it going after that. Winning away from home is terrific – it’s not easy away from home in Europe. It gives them belief that they can come and compete.”

The job will now be passed over to Nancy, who could be about to lose one of his best academy stars right away amid Liverpool’s interest in Derek Jikiemi.

Liverpool pushing to sign Celtic gem Jikiemi

As reported by The Daily Record, Liverpool are now pushing to sign Celtic gem Jikiemi after sending their scouts to watch the 15-year-old Parkhead wonderkid. The central defender is one of the most talented players in Celtic’s academy, but could be about to follow in Ben Doak’s footsteps by swapping Glasgow for Merseyside.

Although Jikiemi is one for the future, losing him would represent where Celtic currently find themselves in the European pecking order. They won’t be expected to compete Liverpool in the market, but they must do better to keep hold of homegrown talent.

If the teenager did complete a move to Anfield then Celtic would only receive compensation for the years that he came through their system in an added blow.

The Hoops can, however, secure their young star to professional terms at the end of the season when he’s 16 years old. Whether they get the chance to do that remains to be seen, however.

Dave Roberts Jokes About Shohei Ohtani's 'Dad Strength' After Daughter's Birth

On Saturday, Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani announced the birth of his daughter in some exciting news for he and his wife Mamiko. Immediately, baseball fans began to speculate about the added boost Ohtani could receive from dad strength, or the apparent boost in physical power that new fathers gain.

Even Dodgers manager Dave Roberts broached the subject of "dad strength," which, for the record, he believes is an actual thing, and proceeded to crack a joke about how it could help the three-time MVP

"Dad strength is real," Roberts told MLB.com on Sunday. "It's amazing how hard Shohei hits the ball now. So now that he is a father, we might see some 120 [mph] exit [velocity hits] off the bat. Something unprecedented."

That would be a scary sight indeed, given what Ohtani has done to baseballs before entering fatherhood. In each of the last four seasons, Ohtani registered one of the five hardest-hit baseballs in each year, topping out at 119.2 mph in a game last April.

Could there be more batted balls like that for Ohtani now that he's a father? Ohtani went 0-for-3 in Sunday's 1–0 win over the Texas Rangers, his first game back since returning from the paternity list after missing two contests

But stay tuned, as a different version of Ohtani could step to the plate on Tuesday when the Dodgers take on the Chicago Cubs in the first game of a two-game set.

Rays' Wander Franco Arrested in Dominican Republic Over Altercation Involving Guns

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco was arrested in the Dominican Republic on Monday, police said. Franco, who is on indefinite administrative leave from Major League Baseball as he awaits trial, was reportedly involved in an altercation Sunday that led to guns being drawn. Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, Franco and an unnamed woman are being held for questioning over the incident.

Franco has a December 12 trial in the country for a separate case in which he is accused of sexual abuse, sexual exploitation against a minor and human trafficking. As noted by ESPN, Franco's bail agreement allows him to travel within the Dominican Republic and he is free to carry a gun so long as he has a license to do so and the weapon is registered.

The 23-year-old shortstop was placed on MLB's restricted list in July and then on administrative leave in August after he was accused by prosecutors of having a sexual relationship with a then-14-year-old girl. Until that case is resolved Franco is considered under investigation by MLB over the league's domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.

Franco signed an 11-year, $182 million deal with the Rays in 2021. He has not taken the field for the franchise since 2023.

Mary Earps launches scathing attack on England boss Sarina Wiegman's decision to recall Chelsea's Hannah Hampton to the Lionesses squad & claims 'bad behaviour was rewarded'

Former England goalkeeper Mary Earps has lifted the lid on her dramatic last few months with the Lionesses and the explosive exchanges with boss Sarina Wiegman which led to her departure from the team just weeks before this summer's successful European Championship defence, following the decision to recall Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

  • High drama ahead of Euros

Earps has revealed details of her exit from the international scene in her new autobiography 'All In', where she claims fellow 'keeper Hampton's poor conduct during the Euro 2022 campaign "frequently risked derailing training sessions and team resources". Earps claims she told Lionesses coach Wiegman that "bad behaviour is being rewarded" when the Chelsea goalkeeper was reinstated to the squad and the situation came to a head when the England boss named Hampton as her new number one, which prompted Earps' shock international retirement.

    Stunning revelations over 'disruptive' behaviour

The Paris Saint-Germain keeper addressed Hampton being dropped from the international squad after Euro 2022, citing her rivals' negative effect on the camp. The players were brought together after the landing the European crown at Wembley and were asked for their feedback – and Hampton's behaviour was singled out.

In an extract from her book published in , Earps said: "The only negative that each group reported back on was that behaviour, which was overwhelmingly considered disruptive and unreliable, with a risk of being destructive, taking energy and time from coaches who needed to work with the rest of the team on set-pieces, mentality and of course goalkeeping sessions.

"It affected us all in a domino effect to an extent that was extremely unusual in a successful elite team environment. It also completely contradicted my professional values, which included preserving everything I had, mentally and physically, for performance and for a goalkeeper union where everyone, whatever their role, had the space and support to be great at their job."

  • Breakdown in relationship explained

But in April 2024, Earps was asked to join a meeting with Wiegman and goalkeeper coach Darren Ward where they revealed that Hampton was going to be reintegrated into the starting XI for a Euro 2025 qualifier. It was a decision which left Earps devastated.

Speaking to Wiegman, Earps said: "I don’t get it. It’s a qualifier match. And bad behaviour is being rewarded."

Earps continued: "Now this felt unjust. My eyes welled with tears. It was a choice that went against my core values. I couldn’t get my head around it because when my values were compromised, the strain always felt heavy enough to keep me up at night. When this kind of a decision compromised my football, I was sleepless. The affinity I had for Sarina and this job – one I’d given every last cell of myself to – was being destroyed, the trust and respect evaporating.

She added: "I wasn’t entitled to keep my place if Sarina didn’t want me to but I was entitled to decide what happened next. I could do what other people do if they’re no longer enjoying their job: I could leave, I could retire."

    Final showdown ended Euro hopes

The crunch meeting came the following year at England’s St George's Park training base where it was revealed Hampton would be the Lionesses' No.1 for the forthcoming European Championship in Switzerland.

Earps revealed: "I had 30 seconds to say my piece. I told her (Wiegman) I wasn’t surprised by what she’d just said, that it had been a long time coming, but I felt extremely disappointed, nonetheless. Then I said: 'I just think you could have been more direct and honest from the jump.' She wasn’t happy with that 'No, I don’t think that’s fair. I always communicate openly. We’ve only just made this decision,' she cut in."

Earps added: "That sounded like bullsh*t to me."

Arsenal have signed a "magical" star who looks like a new Saka-type player

Over the last three seasons, Arsenal have been within touching distance of ending their two-decade drought for a Premier League title under Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners last claimed title glory way back in 2004, with a generation of supporters unable to personally experience the heights achieved in the years prior.

In recent years, the club have shown glimpses of ending such an extended wait, but have been unable to cross the line and end a campaign in top spot.

Arteta’s men have finished the last three seasons in second place, but will be hoping to go one better this time around after the hierarchy backed him with over £200m worth of new additions.

However, despite the heavy spending from the board, one player already in the ranks at the Emirates could offer the solution to their recent inability to jump the final hurdle.

Why Saka could lead Arsenal to title glory in 25/26

Winger Bukayo Saka has been a crucial member of the Arsenal squad over the last couple of years, even cementing his place as a regular starter under Arteta.

The Englishman has risen through the academy ranks and showcased his worth, subsequently reaching unthinkable heights in the club’s hunt for title glory.

The 24-year-old has since racked up 270 senior appearances for the Gunners, registering 144 combined goals and assists in the process – an average of 0.53 per 90.

He missed a huge chunk of last campaign through injury, restricting him to just 37 appearances in all competitions, but it didn’t stop him from achieving a total of 25 goal contributions.

Such numbers weren’t enough for Arteta to claim any form of silverware, but his return to full fitness in 2025/26 will only improve the club’s chances of success.

His emergence through the youth ranks has highlighted the impressive work done by all the staff behind the scenes, which could allow players to emulate his success at the Emirates.

The Arsenal star who’s already a Saka-type player

Over the last couple of months, Arsenal fans have found a new reason to be excited, with teenager Max Dowman making his mark on the first-team despite being just 15.

He made his first senior appearance for the Gunners in the 5-0 triumph over Leeds United at the Emirates, featuring for just under half an hour but still having a huge impact.

The youngster won a penalty late on in the contest, handing Viktor Gyokeres the chance to net his second goal for the club, already showcasing his ability to torment the opposition despite his tender age.

Given his immediate impact in North London, there’s no denying that Dowman has a huge future at the club, but it’s crucial Arteta and co manage the expectations placed upon him.

However, the route of being in the academy and making the jump to the senior squad isn’t as simple for others, with Eberechi Eze one player who’s demonstrated just that in recent years.

He spent time in the youth ranks during the early years of his career, before being let go and making a name for himself at Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

The Gunners subsequently forked out a deal worth £67.5m for his signature this summer, with the hope he can become as crucial as Saka in the immediate future.

Eze, who’s been labelled “magical to watch” by Paul Hall, has glaring similarities to the aforementioned star, with the attacker already being comparable to his compatriot.

In his first eight games back in North London, the 27-year-old has already showcased his creative ability, laying on two assists in his first five Premier League outings.

However, Eze has also shown that he’s capable of starring alone, already netting his first goal for the club in the recent Carabao Cup clash against Port Vale.

Both traits have seen Saka become a real fan-favourite in North London, with the winger undoubtedly a key part of any potential success the club could achieve this campaign.

As for the new summer addition, he could also follow suit if he continues his excellent start to life at the Emirates – subsequently adding a new dimension to Arteta’s already potent front line.

15/20 duels won: Sunderland star is proving he's on the same level as Xhaka

While Leeds United fell to a disappointing 1-0 loss on the road at Fulham on Saturday, Sunderland battled to a hard-fought draw at nearby Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats have only lost one of their opening four matches in the league, too, with this battling draw away at Selhurst Park the first point picked up on their travels, which will surely only boost the confidence even more as they bid to beat the drop.

Granit Xhaka impressed once more from the middle of the park as Sunderland’s warrior centrally, with the decision to instantly gift the ex-Arsenal man the captain’s armband appearing to be a masterstroke.

Xhaka's performance in numbers vs Palace

The Swiss enforcer joining the building for £17m this summer did look to be a mightily impressive pick-up before the football had even got underway. After all, this is a player who had once scored nine and assisted seven goals in a solitary campaign for Arsenal.

Now, it certainly looks to be a top purchase for a Sunderland side attempting to make survival look a breeze.

Indeed, Xhaka backed up a standout performance against Brentford, which saw him pick up an assist, with a far more attritional effort away at the Eagles.

Indeed, alongside Robin Roefs heroically keeping the ball out of his net with six big saves, Xhaka would come up trumps, rolling his sleeves up and doing the dirty work, winning a high ten duels and completing eight clearances, meaning Palace were limited in their approach.

However, Xhaka wasn’t the only one figure after the dust had settled on the hard-fought draw that was receiving many a plaudit, with a new recruit defensively sticking out, having been heralded as an “unreal” bit of business by journalist Michael Graham after the full-time whistle was blown.

Le Bris' biggest coup after Xhaka

It was expected that Xhaka was going to be a success, considering the 32-year-old already had a mammoth 225 Premier League games in his back pocket.

On the contrary, Nordi Mukiele might well have been viewed as needing more time to acclimatise to the tough division, having only ever plied his trade in the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, before making the late switch to England this summer.

However, it’s clear from his opening two games in the heart of Le Bris’ defence that the Frenchman was born for the fight of the Premier League.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear that adding Mukiele for just £12m could now go down as a sensational coup on the same level as Xhaka, with a remarkable 15 duels already won by the gritty 27-year-old across his first two near faultless starts.

With just 13 passes misdirected too, it’s clear that the ex-Bayer Leverkusen defender – who would have known Xhaka at the BayArena – is cut out for the tough fight ahead, having reduced Jean Philippe-Mateta, who is revered for being a handful, to just 31 touches of the ball and one paltry duel won at Selhurst Park.

Having previously shone in the Champions League, it shouldn’t be a shock that Mukiele has instantly settled in. The Premier League can be a tricky beast to adjust to, but the early proof indicates that it’s a phenomenal capture.

Roker Report journalist Andy Tomlinson certainly agrees, with a glowing 9/10 post-match rating handed to the brand new number 20 after he ‘completely shut down’ the threat of Mateta.

With the French defender further heralded as “outstanding” by the aforementioned Graham, the hope will be that both Mukiele and Xhaka can continue to be crucial parts of Le Bris’ machine, as survival is triumphantly secured without any real worries seeping in.

Le Bris could unleash his own Mateta in Sunderland's “one man machine”

Regis Le Bris could unleash Sunderland’s very own Jean-Philippe Mateta for his side’s away test at Crystal Palace.
