Celtic duo backed to leave this summer

Celtic goalkeepers Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain should be sold in the summer transfer window, according to former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie.

The Lowdown: Celtic pair out of favour

Joe Hart has been the Bhoys’ undisputed first-choice ‘keeper this season, producing some excellent performances and ensuring that they lie on the cusp of winning the Premiership title.

Two players who have duly featured very sporadically are backup stoppers Barkas and Bain, having made just six appearances between them in all competitions in 2021/22.

The Greece international has been linked with a summer exit in recent days, and it could be the case that both are moved on to pastures new at the end of the season.

The Latest: McAvennie wants Celtic duo gone

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie believes that both Barkas and Bain ought to be offloaded, claiming that they are no longer at the level required for Celtic. The 62-year-old said:

“You wonder who we will bring in. Hart has been absolutely brilliant, maybe the signing of the season and he been reliable.

“Barkas and Bain are absolutely nowhere near the required standard and they haven’t been for a long time. Getting rid of the both, that’s not a problem for me. I have no issues with that.

“It could even be a younger player to come in and learn from Joe Hart.  One thing I can say, is that I have total confidence that whoever we sign will be quality.

“We haven’t really made a bad transfer since Ange came in, he knows what he is doing. So let’s see what happens but I’m more than happy for Bain and Brkas to move on.”

The Verdict: Time for a new challenge

The main thing for Celtic now is for Ange Postecoglou to build a bigger and more superior squad, ensuring that his side enjoy a period of dominance in Scotland, not to mention returning to the Champions League and holding their own in that competition.

Neither Barkas nor Bain have greatly impressed on the rare occasions that they have been given a chance this term, so it’s understandable by McAvennie is calling for the pair to be offloaded over the summer.

While Hart should be first-choice moving forward, a backup of similar quality to him wouldn’t go amiss, and ideally the Hoops will bring in someone who can be genuinely trusted over a sustained period if the English veteran picks up an injury.

A younger alternative would make the most sense, potentially being viewed as the future first-choice between the sticks and eventually usurping the ageing Hart in the role.

Crystal Palace: Journalist says defender could be dropped

Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell may be at risk of losing his place in the starting line-up because of poor form, according to The Athletic journalist Ed Malyon.

The lowdown

The Eagles find themselves 15th in the Premier League table with just one win and six points from their first six matches. Mitchell has started all but one of those games, playing 63 minutes in the goalless draw against Newcastle United on Saturday before he was replaced by Nathaniel Clyne.

Clyne is primarily a right-back, but Palace lack an orthodox senior left-back to provide cover and competition for Mitchell.

One potential option for the Eagles is 18-year-old Tayo Adaramola, recently recalled by Palace from his loan spell at Coventry City.

The latest

Writing on The Athletic’s matchday discussion board, Malyon said that opponents have been continually looking to target Mitchell.

He suggested that Vieira may now consider looking to Adaramola and taking the 23-year-old out of the firing line, writing: “Issues we saw reappear: Mitchell targeted and struggling (Clyne looked more solid to me, and I wonder if Adaramola gets a shot soon?)”

The verdict

Mitchell started the season in good form, registering an assist in the 3-1 win over Aston Villa last month and earning two 7+/10 SofaScore ratings in his first three matches. However, his average rating in the three games since has fallen to 6.3, and the statistics justify Malyon’s concern.

Across those three matches, the left-back has won only two of the 10 duels that he contested and recorded a passing accuracy of just 65.7% (23 out of 35). Furthermore, he has been dribbled past three times and made a very limited impact going forward, failing to create a single chance.

Mitchell was excellent last term, hence his nomination for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award, but he is out of form right now.

Could Adaramola be the answer to this potential issue for Palace?

He has only made three senior appearances so far – two in last season’s FA Cup and one in the Carabao Cup last month for Coventry – but he should be knocking on the first-team door, as a Republic of Ireland under-21 international with 20 games of Premier League 2 experience under his belt (via Transfermarkt).

Patrick Vieira says that the teenager is ‘so full of energy’, while Eagles under-23 boss Paddy McCarthy admits that Adaramola ‘can take your breath away’ in ‘full flow’, and a former team-mate has called him ‘lightning quick’.

Maybe these are qualities that Palace could utilise while giving Mitchell a breather in the wake of his diminishing form.

Leeds: Radrizzani must rue sale of Wood

Prior to Andrea Radrizzani’s takeover of Leeds United back in 2017, the Whites were not exactly renowned for their transfer business, with Massimo Cellino’s tumultuous three-year spell as the club’s owner doing more harm than good to the Elland Road side’s chances of securing promotion back to the Premier League.

However, Radrizzani’s purchase of the then-Championship side, alongside Victor Orta’s appointment as the club’s director of football, brought with it the much-required steadiness and planning in the transfer market that would ultimately lead to the Whites securing passage back to the top flight of English football for the first time in 16 years in 2020.

Although, despite Leeds currently being in their most healthy financial position for the best part of two decades as a direct result of the work of Radrizzani and Orta – not to mention the management of Marcelo Bielsa – there is nevertheless one early transfer decision that the Italian and Spaniard may well rue – the 2017 sale of Chris Wood.

Indeed, while a £15m offer from Burnley undoubtedly represented exceptional value for money for a player who had a valuation of just £5.4m at the time, considering the subsequent career that the centre-forward has enjoyed, in addition to the fee the Clarets received from his recent move to Newcastle United, Radrizzani could well rue cashing in on the 30-year-old when he did.

In the five years that have passed following the New Zealand international’s departure from Elland Road, the striker bagged an incredibly impressive 49 goals over 144 Premier League appearances for Burnley – returns that convinced Newcastle to part with an extraordinary £25m in order to bring the forward to St. James’ Park back in January of this year.

Since then, the £80k-per-week centre-forward who Jurgen Klopp dubbed a “machine” has notched a further two Premier League goals for the Magpies – taking his total haul in the top flight of English football to 52, having bagged his first during a spell with Leicester City prior to his 2015 switch to Leeds.

As such, while there were certainly a number of factors involved in Wood’s departure from Elland Road back in 2017, considering just how effective the striker has been in the Premier League since, coupled with Burnley receiving £10m more for the 30-year-old than they paid Leeds, Radrizzani’s decision to cash in on the 68-cap international may well be one the Italian regrets.

Celtic: Club eyeing Hoops transfer plan

According to a report from SBI Soccer, Newcastle United could be ready to make a move for Celtic loan sensation Cameron Carter-Vickers this summer.

The lowdown: Deal to be done

Signed on loan for the duration of the 2021/22 campaign from Tottenham Hotspur, it’s understood the Hoops have an option to buy the 24-year-old this summer.

It would take a reported £10million (£6m initial) to bring Carter-Vickers to Parkhead on a permanent basis following what has been a superb season for the man called the ‘best player in Scotland’ by Chris Sutton.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-6/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, the deal has become less straightforward in recent weeks as a number of Premier League suitors have emerged…

The latest: Newcastle keen

As per SBI Soccer, newly mega-rich Newcastle United have ‘joined the list’ of clubs interested in the eight-cap USA ace.

It’s claimed that a ‘source close to the player’ has informed the American outlet that Southampton and newly-promoted Fulham are also in the mix to sign the centre-back.

Furthermore, the report states that Carter-Vickers – who was recently praised for his ‘outstanding’ form at Lennoxtown by Bhoys left-back Greg Taylor –  ‘could prove too expensive’ for Celtic.

The verdict: Act fast

Given the ace’s stellar campaign for Ange Postecoglou’s side, it’s perhaps no surprise that there would be interest from beyond Glasgow in the powerful defender.

Overall this season, Carter-Vickers has rated 7.39/10 whilst being part of 16 clean sheets across 31 Scottish Premiership outings, successfully completing 78.5 passes, 4.3 clearances and 5.8 total duels on average per game (Sofascore), conclusive evidence of his importance to the Celtic title charge.

Still just 24 and with strong aerial and passing ability (WhoScored), the American star has what it takes to succeed at the top level and therefore the Celtic hierarchy must attempt to complete the £10million move at the earliest possible juncture.

Leeds: Jones drops Kent transfer update

Dean Jones has dropped an update on the future of reported Leeds United transfer target Ryan Kent.

What’s the talk?

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider and journalist revealed that, despite Glasgow Rangers hoping to tie the 25-year-old down to a new contract at Ibrox this summer, the winger is looking to secure a move away from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side at the end of the current campaign – with both Leeds and Everton believed to be interested in the former Liverpool starlet.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

Regarding the future of Kent, Jones said: “I’m told Ryan Kent will still look to leave this summer as he wants to play in the Premier League. Rangers are ready to make him a new contract offer, but it sounds like he fancies a move, and he knows clubs like Leeds and Everton are keen.”

Orta will be buzzing

With Kent having been a long-term target for Victor Orta and Leeds, the news that the forward looks to have his heart set on a move away from Scotland this summer is sure to be an update that will have left the Whites’ sporting director buzzing.

And, it is not difficult to see why Orta would be interested in a move for the 25-year-old this summer, as the £12.6m-rated winger would very much appear to make a fantastic addition to Jesse Marsch’s current options out wide, particularly with Raphinha being heavily linked with a move away from Elland Road.

Indeed, over his 25 Premiership appearances this season, the £52k-per-week forward has proved a constant threat on Rangers’ left flank, scoring two goals, registering eight assists and creating ten big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.5 shots, making 1.7 key passes and completing 2.1 dribbles per game.

These returns have seen the player who Andrew Dickson dubbed “unplayable” average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.10, ranking him as the Light Blues’ sixth-best performer in the Scottish top flight.

However, it has undoubtedly been over Kent’s 12 appearances over Rangers’ run to the Europa League final in which the forward has really caught the eye, bagging one goal, providing three assists and creating five big chances, with these metrics seeing the former England youth international average a SofaScore match rating of 7.08.

As such, should Raphinha indeed move onto pastures new this summer, Kent would very much look to be an extremely capable replacement for the Brazil international, something which leads us to believe that Jones’ latest update concerning the 25-year-old is fantastic news for Orta and supporters of the Whites alike.

WBA must complete Jed Wallace transfer

West Bromwich Albion had a busy summer 2021 transfer window in terms of the number of players who made moves into and out of the club.

One rather noticeable exit during that period was Matheus Pereira, who joined Saudi club Al-Hilal in August.

During his time at The Hawthorns, the Brazilian scored 20 goals and provided 26 assists in 77 appearances across all competitions, making him a very useful attacking and creative figure for the Baggies.

The 26-year-old’s absence has proved to be rather damaging for the Midlands club and their hopes of securing promotion from the Championship this season.

In their 46 league games during 2021/22, the Baggies won 18, drawn 13 and lost 15, netting 52 goals and conceding 45. To put that into perspective, league winners Fulham scored more than twice as many.

With the season now over and the summer transfer window set to open for business soon, West Brom could do with finding a suitable replacement for Pereira who can score and create goals on a regular basis.

One mann who could fit this bill and has been mentioned with a move to The Hawthorns in recent weeks is Millwall star Jed Wallace.

Wallace can fill Pereira void

In 404 appearances for Millwall, Portsmouth and Wolves, the attacker has scored 73 goals and provided 64 assists along the way.

This season has seen the 28-year-old score six goals and provide 12 assists in 38 league appearances, showing just how capable he is of scoring and creating goals.

To further highlight how deadly the Millwall maestro can be, only Benik Afobe (34) has had more shots on target for the Lions this season than Wallace (25), who also made the second-highest number of crosses in the Championship with 300.

In addition, having played in numerous attacking positions this season, his versatility could make him an ideal replacement for Pereira, who also played in several different roles during his time at The Hawthorns.

Hailed as a “game changer” by Millwall boss Gary Rowett, the £6.3m-rated attacker is out of contract at The Den this summer, meaning that West Brom could potentially sign him on a free transfer.

Given the talent he has and Albion’s need for another potent attacker, this could be a top bit of business from the Baggies and Steve Bruce if they are able to secure Wallace’s signature.

Man United: Red Devils want Raphinha

Manchester United have reportedly joined the list of clubs interested in signing Leeds United winger Raphinha, according to a report from The Telegraph.

The lowdown: Hot property

The skilful Brazilian was an instant hit in the Premier League, directly contributing to 15 goals in 30 outings in a debut English top-flight campaign having made the move from French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais.

That form immediately attracted the attention of Liverpool and this season’s overall plight in Yorkshire has drawn yet more interest in the sought-after Brazilian.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-2/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

West Ham, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Barcelona have all been credited with an interest in the 25-year-old, but now it seems another big hitter is ready to join the race…

The latest: United keen

As per The Telegraph, Manchester United are ‘monitoring’ the situation surrounding the seven-cap Brazil ace ahead of the summer transfer window.

It’s claimed that as incoming manager Erik ten Hag makes a new attacking weapon a priority at Old Trafford, the man dubbed a ‘magician’ by former Red Devils star and now Elland Road teammate Daniel James could be considered as a potential target.

Should arch-rivals Leeds suffer relegation on the final day, Raphinha could be available at a marked-down price as a host of potential suitors watch on with interest.

The verdict: Worthwhile venture

Whilst signing players directly from Leeds is a path rarely trodden by United, in this instance, similarly with Erik Cantona, it would be well worthy of the hardship.

So far this season, the right-winger has scored ten times and provided another three assists in 34 Premier League outings, defying the conventional wisdom of what has been a disappointing campaign for the Yorkshire club.

Albeit the Old Trafford squad is relatively blessed with talented wide men in the shape of Jadon Sancho, Anthony Elanga and Marcus Rashford, none of the aforementioned trio can boast anything like similar numbers to Raphinha at present and the Brazilian should therefore be viewed as an upgrade.

At a potentially reduced fee due to relegation, any attempt to bring the £40.5million valued star to Manchester should be a no-brainer for the club’s hierarchy.
