Chappell: West Indies batting has fallen since 2012 title

Big pictureTill Shamar Springer rolled his chest rhythmically, there was Chris Gayle and co. galloping to the , having won their maiden World T20 crown, their first world title in 33 years.Four years on, the core of that 2012 batch remains intact. But there are many questions Darren Sammy and his band of merry men will have to answer if they are to repeat the 2012 feat. The biggest weakness for West Indies is a batting line-up that is powerful on paper, but low on returns and inconsistent in form.Only Gayle, their best batsman, emerges unscathed. In his 43 T20I innings, Gayle has scored 1406 runs at an average of 35.15 and a strike rate of 142.60. Contrast that with Marlon Samuels, who was the Man of the Match in the 2012 final, but has scored just one half-century in his last 12 T20I innings. He has not played any T20 cricket since the Bangladesh Premier League last November.Denesh Ramdin is the other batsman who is struggling. If not for his wicketkeeping, he might have found it hard to retain his place. In 34 T20I innings, he has managed 385 runs at an average of 16.73, which is the lowest among all wicketkeepers who have played 20 or more T20I innings. The other specialist batsmen, Johnson Charles (22 T20I innings, 463 runs at 21.04), Andre Fletcher (24, 427 at 19.40) have been equally inconsistent.West Indies’ biggest strength remains their quartet of allrounders: Dwayne Bravo, Sammy, Carlos Braithwaite and Andre Russell. These four can destroy bowling attacks mercilessly as Sammy showed in the second warm-up match against Australia in Kolkata which West Indies won. In the absence of Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard, these four men will also take the responsibility of leading the bowling attack.As Sammy has been saying, this tournament is the last chance to win big. For him. For Gayle. For Bravo. For Samuels. And, probably, even Russell, who is battling knee problems. These men have at times been labelled bandits for choosing lucrative T20 leagues over representing West Indies. Will they now help West Indies loot the ransom at the World T20? If so, it would be worth watching how they attempt to outdo the “Springer roll”.At the helmOne disadvantage West Indies face is not having played as one unit since the last edition of the tournament. It is here that Sammy’s skills as a motivational speaker will be handy. As a leader he has the respect of his players and bonds well with all the seniors.Equally influential would be Phil Simmons, their coach, who enters his first major global tournament in this capacity. A quiet presence in the dressing room he might be, but Simmons believes in hard work and discipline. Simmons was briefly suspended last year by the WICB for publicly stating that he did not get his players of choice in the squad for the Sri Lanka tour. The players know Simmons is on their side. Simmons wants acknowledgement in the form of performances.Key stat8This is the number of T20Is West Indies have played since the last World T20, the lowest among all ten Full Members. However, perhaps this stat could be offset by another: 42.4 is the average number of T20s played by the 15 squad members since the last World T20 – the highest for any team!Leading menAndre Russell was the IPL’s Most Valuable Player last year, playing for Kolkata Knight Riders. He won the Big Bash League with the Sydney Thunder recently. During the Pakistan Super League, Russell declared he was hungry to perform and played a key role in Islamabad United’s victorious campaign in the league’s first season. Now Russell is ready for the World T20. It offers him the opportunity to correct something he would not like to hear: in the seven T20I innings he has played since the 2014 World T20, Russell has scored just 72 runs. And in the eight matches in which he has bowled during that period, he has just two wickets at an economy rate of 10.3. He has done it for the franchises. Now it is the Caribbean’s turn.Chris Gayle is the second highest run-getter in World T20s (807 runs) and the highest among all who are playing this edition of the tournament. He has hit the most fifty-plus scores (8) and the most sixes (49). Despite the demands on him, Gayle must be well aware that the longer he stays at the crease the better chance West Indies have of compiling high totals or chasing them down.Can Andre Russell deliver in West Indian colours?•Associated Press

Burning questionWho is going to replace Narine as the match-winning spinner?Samuel Badree might raise his hand to answer that question. Badree has the experience of playing on Indian pitches in the IPL with Rajasthan Royals, has opened the bowling with the new ball, and is accurate with his legspinners. He is no door mat. His economy rate of 5.39 in T20Is is the best among all bowlers who have bowled 50 or more overs in T20Is. Badree knows he is no Narine, who was one of the most dangerous bowlers at death. Badree has never bowled at death in T20Is.However, he trumps Narine in Powerplays: in 22 T20I innings, Badree has taken 19 wickets at an economy rate of 5.39. In the same first-six-overs phase, Narine has had 26 innings, taking seven wickets at an economy rate of 6.20. While Ashley Nurse or Sulieman Benn will play the supporting role, it is Badree who will need to fire the shots early to make sure West Indies are standing strong at the end.World T20 historyTwice West Indies failed to make the knockouts: 2007, and then, embarrassingly, at home in 2010. He will primarily be involved in Northamptonshire’s NatWest T20 Blast campaign but could feature in other competitions, depending on the availability of the club’s main overseas player, Rory Kleinveldt.Prasanna, 30, has taken 25 wickets and scored 242 runs in 32 appearances for Sri Lanka, across all three formats. When the start of play was delayed to remove a pigeon’s dirty protest to the side of the pitch, you wondered if that was a sign of things to come. In the end, both Surrey and Somerset played some impressive cricket even if it was to no avail. Had rain, snow, sleet and avian intervention not taken time out of this game, both teams would have been able to state their cases for a win.The match went as far as 5.45pm, at which point hands were shaken and a draw was officially called. That option was available to Gareth Batty from 5pm but, with Somerset 54 for 3 and no intention of chasing their target of 292, the Surrey captain sensed a collapse might be forthcoming. Only one more wicket would fall as composed knocks from James Hildreth and Peter Trego saw Somerset through to safety.The evening session and Somerset’s chase had started with Ravi Rampaul dismissing Tom Abell at the end of the second over, with no run scored, for the West Indian’s 14th wicket of the season. Zafar Ansari then accounted for the other three to fall. Along with his wicket in Somerset’s first innings and 67 runs in the match, Ansari put in a tidy shift in the field which was capped off with a stunning catch to remove Craig Overton off Rampaul on day three. It was a quietly impressive return to first-team action.Earlier on, both sides had shown a willingness to move the game along but it was the timing of wickets that prevented both from following through.Trescothick ‘inspiring’ – Rogers

On Marcus Trescothick’s three hundreds in six innings: “I thought Marcus’ innings in the first innings was world class. It’s kind of great to play with a guy and see that kind of innings at his age. That’s quite inspiring.”

On Somerset’s display: “I thought we reacted really well to losing the toss. I’d say we created 30 chances with the ball and put down 12. That’s where we let ourselves down and we need to improve on that.”

On captaining Somerset: “It’s different from Middlesex. There’s an interesting mix of senior players and young players who could be very special. A lot is to do with the development of those younger players. It’s been challenging but I’ve really enjoyed it. They’re a great bunch of guys and that’s a good recipe.”

For Surrey, any impetus for quick runs was curtailed at regular intervals. The loss of Rory Burns and Arun Harinath in the space of six balls, caught behind off Overton and Lewis Gregory respectively, meant Kumar Sangakkara and Steven Davies had to rebuild. After one run in his first 21 balls, Davies hit three fours in his next six before his wings were clipped for 26 – stumped off Jack Leach.Even Jason Roy, whose default is to press fast-forward, was unable to get going. Chris Rogers took a smart low catch at cover to give Leach a second wicket to remove him and it was only when Sangakkara fell for 71 – his fifty coming off 86 balls – that others tried to get the scoreboard moving along. With Batty’s dismissal came the declaration, which asked Somerset to get 292 in 42 overs.At stumps, Batty ceded that their original plan had been quashed by a disciplined Somerset bowling effort. “The perfect scenario would have been that we would have got into a better position quicker,” he said. “Somerset put up a real fight this morning, making it real tough for us to score.”He was also mindful of leaving Somerset too much time, referencing Surrey’s match with Leicestershire in May of last season. On that occasion the hosts, on a pitch not too dissimilar to this one, which took a bit of turn and was away to the side of the square nearest the Archbishop Tenison’s School, chased down 216 inside 22 overs to snatch the game at the death. With Somerset possessing big hitters such as first-innings centurion Marcus Trescothick, Peter Trego, Gregory and Overton, he didn’t want to risk it.”It was respect to them more than anything,” Batty said. “We were always very confident but we felt like we played a lot of good cricket in the game and we didn’t want to put ourselves in a compromising position against some very dangerous players.”Somerset, on the other hand, couldn’t quite get enough wickets at a rate that would have provided them with an appropriate target and ample time to chase. Gregory and Overton shared three wickets each – the former in particular exhibiting good control while the latter tested outside off stump, then ripped out middle when he yorked Tom Curran.While Somerset’s nerves were tested in the final session, they survived to register a second draw on the road this season.”It was pretty tough out there, actually,” said Rogers, who was impressed with his side’s scrapping throughout the match. It was his decision to call for the toss in the hope that Somerset would benefit from batting first and bowling last on what turned out to be a decent wicket for both disciplines. From the point they had lost the toss, Somerset were always behind in the game but performed admirably to not crumble in the face of Surrey’s first-innings 463 and then hold their own at the end.He did, however, deride his side’s inability to take their chances, particularly against Sangakkara, who he believed benefited from “four chances over two innings”. That really hurt us and I think he was the difference.” He highlighted that lack of ruthlessness in the field as something that needed to be addressed.Both sides, after two matches, are winless.

No último final de semana, o ano se encerrou para o futebol feminino do São Paulo. Com o título do Brasileirão sub-16, o Tricolor fechou a temporada com saldo positivo. Das dez competições disputadas, somando base e profissional, o clube chegou em oito finais e finalizaram 2019 com quatro taças na conta.

A temporada foi a primeira da história do São Paulo com equipes de futebol feminino tanto no profissional, quanto nas categorias de base, somando torneios nacionais, estaduais e sul-americanos disputados. No início do ano, o Tricolor estreou com a equipe de base na Fiesta Sudamericana de la Juventud e, defendendo o título, não conseguiu chegar à final, mas ficou com o terceiro lugar na competição. Na sequência, a mesma equipe disputou a Copa Gevi e a Copa Nike, encerrando com o vice e o primeiro lugar, respectivamente.

O ano da base ainda contou com duas competições inéditas: o Brasileiro sub-18 e o Brasileiro sub-16. No primeiro campeonato, o Tricolor perdeu para o Internacional e ficou em segundo lugar, mas no segundo torneio conquistou o troféu. A equipe comandada por Thiago Viana ainda alcançou um feito histórico ao vencer o Paulista sub-17 pela terceira vez consecutiva.

Enquanto isso, no retorno do futebol feminino profissional, o Tricolor fez bonito no ano e chegou em todas as finais disputadas. A primeira foi o Brasileiro Série A-2, que o time ficou com o título ao vencer o Cruzeiro e conseguiu o sonhado acesso à elite do futebol nacional. Na Copa Paulista e no Paulistão, a equipe comandada por Lucas Piccinato ficou com o segundo lugar. Mesmo assim, o profissional conquistou a torcida tricolor, que abraçou e acolheu a equipe.

Agora com todas as competições encerradas, o futebol feminino do Tricolor entra em férias com o saldo positivo. Dos dez campeonatos disputados no ano, chegou em oito finais e encerrou a temporada com quatro títulos, um pela equipe profissional e mais três com as categorias de base.

Outro ponto do empréstimo é que se Sassá receber uma proposta de um clube, o Coritiba tem 72 horas para igualar a proposta ou liberá-lo para o acerto. Se o negócio for fechado, o Coxa receberá uma parte da negociação como taxa de vitrine .

Com a saída de Sassá e a quase certeza que Fred também irá deixar o Cruzeiro, Adílson Batista irá contar somente com jogadores da base para o ataque celeste: Thiaguinho, Thiago, Alexandre Jesus e Vinícius Popó. O clube mineiro ainda vai tentar buscar no mercado um atacante mais experiente para a temporada 2020.

Sassá chegou ao Cruzeiro 2017, vindo do Botafogo, que recebeu parte em dinheiro e a ida do meia Marcos Vinícius para o time carioca. Com a camisa celeste, fez 80 partidas e marcou 20 gols.
