A 93-ball 96 from Mukhtar Ahmed and Fawad Alam’s unbeaten 76 helped Pakistan A to a consolation win over Sri Lanka A in the third and final unofficial ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.Chasing 278, Israrullah was trapped leg before by Nisala Tharaka in the seventh over. Mukhtar was then involved in two 70-plus partnerships with Khurram Manzoor and captain Fawad Alam, where he struck 11 fours and two sixes before falling to Lakshan Sandakan in the 31st over. With the score at 185 for 3 after Mukhtar’s departure, Ali Waqas put on 54 with Fawad Alam before losing his wicket to Shehan Jayasuriya when Pakistan required a further 37 runs for victory.Fawad then teamed up with wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan to guide Pakistan to their first win the in three-match series.Pakistan had put Sri Lanka in, who rode on fifties from openers Jayasuriya (67) and Kusal Perera (87) and a couple of 20-plus scores from their middle order to finish on 277 in 47.2 overs.

Wagg battles back with ton on harum-scarum day

It was a harum-scarum day: cricket straight from the Brendon McCullum school, as the cliché du jour would have it. After 439 runs and 12 wickets it was a little hard what to make of it all.

Regardless of any restructuring of the County Championship, Surrey have made their commitment to the Woodbridge Road ground at Guildford palpable. 800 permanent seats were put up in the close-season here and the rather ramshackle old pavilion should be next. Surrey hope renovation will be complete by 2017 when, with The Oval hosting five Champions Trophy games, Guildford could even be awarded two first-class matches. As Zafar Ansari compiled his austere 91 on a rather genteel opening day there was copious time to admire Guildford’s protruding sycamore trees. But Ansari’s dismissal to the seventh ball of the second day, trapped on the crease by Michael Hogan, was the prelude to a harum-scarum day: cricket straight from the Brendon McCullum school, as the cliché du jour would have it. After 439 runs and 12 wickets it was a little hard what to make of it all. There was even time for a six because of overthrows. Those runs were gifted rather generously to Graham Wagg. Still, they were well earned for the entertainment he provided spectators at Surrey’s 77th game here. Entering the crease at 106 for 6, perhaps a little perturbed about his demotion in the batting order to grant greater opportunity to Craig Meschede, Wagg arrived brimming with intent. He smited anything short, drove with purpose through the offside and attacked spin with particular relish, striking two emphatic straight sixes off Ansari. The upshot was a chanceless 99-ball century – though Arun Harinath shelled a very sharp return catch a few balls later – as Wagg resurrected Glamorgan’s innings in partnership with Mark Wallace. The two harried the fielders at every turn in their aggressive running between the wickets in adding 152 in 26.3 overs.”It was fantastic. Mark and I tried to take the initiative to the bowlers,” Wagg said. “The game is moving forward and forward and as players we have to adapt to that.”If McCullum was watching in preparation for New Zealand’s next ODI, he would have been proud at the sight of Wallace, showing no regard for the leg slip poised, reverse-sweeping with impunity. Wallace’s innings would have made for a worthy first century of the season, but he fell eight runs shy after playing around a straight one from Tom Curran.Still, the partnership had transformed the complexion of the match after Glamorgan had been in a fine mess at 30 for 4: a position from which Surrey sensed ending their winless run at Guildford, which now extends to 13 years. Curran and Chris Tremlett both bowled with hostility and vim, extracting good lift from a fine wicket: it still provides full value for shots, but now ensures a more even contest between bat and ball. Both opening bowlers got deliveries to hurry onto the batsmen, with devastating effect: Jacques Rudolph, Glamorgan’s captain and talisman, played on against Curran, while Chris Cooke was bowled as the ball bounced down from his bat, raised to leave Tremlett’s delivery alone.Colin Ingram provided an enterprising riposte, driving with ferocity and pulling a flat six off Curran. It must have been enough to remind Surrey of his 91 at The Oval in a T20 game last month, so it was a matter of considerable relief to the hosts when he edged an outswinger from Aneesh Kapil to Vikram Solanki at slip. Still, Ingram had shown his colleagues the way, and Glamorgan only diverged from it in the final hour of the day, as Wagg and Andrew Salter accumulated 13 runs from 13 overs. If everyone was a bit exhausted, they could be forgiven as much on a day that did not end until 6.45pm.Much earlier in the day, Surrey had already contributed plenty of exhilarating hitting of their own. Curran already looks rather too good a player to come in at No. 9, and he was bumped down a further spot because of Surrey’s use of a nightwatchman. After 60 at Grace Road, his maiden first-class half-century, Curran amassed 45 here, including three consecutive boundaries off David Lloyd: an uppercut through point, a drive through extra-cover and a cut along the ground. With Gary Wilson typically resourceful, Chris Tremlett twice harrumphed Salter’s offspin for a huge straight six. As Surrey passed 400, their only regret was their intent had come a little late, so they were restricted to three batting points.Underpinning this frenetic but hugely enjoyable day was a feeling – in the best sense – of how little it all mattered. What was really important was the news that Moises Henriques was discharged from hospital, after Rory Burns had been the previous day. Curran captured the mood: “It was a horrible incident. To have them both all in one piece is really good news.”

Moeen stars as England's pressure brings rewards

Any England supporter with the vaguest sense of Ashes history would have felt mild trepidation as they defended a first-innings score of 430 on a sunny Cardiff day

The Report by David Hopps09-Jul-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAny England supporter with the vaguest sense of Ashes history would have felt mild trepidation as they defended a first-innings score of 430 on a sunny Cardiff day. The last time an Ashes Test ventured into Wales, England made pretty much the same score, only to concede 674 for 6 and need some heroic resistance from James Anderson and Monty Panesar to escape with a draw. That being so, England, even while believing the total was a par score, will have been relieved to prise out five Australian batsmen by the close of the second day with a largely disciplined bowling performance. They lead by 166 and will hope to cut deep into the tail with the second new ball, which is 10 overs away.Six years on, the Land of Song has produced another placid Ashes surface – when the ball goes soft, it is less Tom Jones’ Green, Green Grass of Home than the Manic Street Preachers’ Some Kind of Nothingness, slow enough on occasions to crush any happiness you know. That this first Investec Test has generally been so fascinating is testimony to the attacking resolve of both sides. The businesslike figure of Chris Rogers fashioned Australia’s response. A prolonged career in English county cricket before Australia finally came calling has made such slow, low pitches his natural habitat. His wicket carries slightly less kudos than some, outside a dressing room at any rate, but his 95 was the innings of a solid citizen, replete with watchful off-side drives: he pushed the ball into the covers as if emerging warily from a T-junction on the lookout for oncoming traffic. It sounds unfair to term him careful when he feels, with justification, that he is careering along, but his squat deflections and placements are shots of calculation. He fell five runs short of what would have been his fourth Ashes hundred, cutting a ball quite tight to him from Mark Wood and edging to Jos Buttler. From 180 for 3, gambolling along at more than four in over, in keeping with England’s progress, Australia dried, with James Anderson to the fore, and the rate slipped to three an over against a softening ball, for the loss of Michael Clarke and Adam Voges, before the close.Rogers did have a world record to ponder. His feat of seven successive Test fifties had been achieved only by Everton Weekes, Andy Flower, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Kumar Sangakkara. Perhaps not surprisingly for a record that reveals consistency rather than grandeur, all of them, with the exception of Weekes, the domineering West Indian, have often been described in the same workmanlike terms befitting Rogers. That sequence was interrupted by the concussion that forced him out of a recent Test series in the West Indies and Stuart Broad might have exposed one or two leftover signs with the short ball. Rogers, though, did achieve his first Test six – a sort of coming of age in his 21st Test – when he hooked a bouncer to long leg, brushing the fingertips of the leaping Moeen Ali who crossed the line in a vain attempt to fashion a catch.Rogers also survived a review. There was swing initially for England’s new-ball attack and Broad came close to removing Rogers, on 2, only for England’s review – encouraged as ever by Broad, his ravenous desire for wickets colouring his conclusion – to be rejected as Rogers was saved by a thin inside edge.David Warner was the first Australian batsman to fall, driving Anderson on the up and well taken by Alastair Cook at first slip. It was Warner at his least aggressive (in Walkabout bar terms, 8pm at the latest) and he also needed to overturn an lbw decision on 13 when Anderson struck his back pad but replays showed the ball had pitched outside leg stump. As Australia hurtled ahead, England were grateful for the resilience of Moeen, who cut down Steven Smith and Clarke with their innings established. That Australia would target him was inevitable, just as they had targeted Graeme Swann so successfully on their own pitches two years earlier. Smith seemed to have his measure, one assertive over bringing three boundaries in four balls: stylish straight drive, dragged straight drive and a resounding dance down the pitch to loft him gloriously over mid-off.But Cook persisted with Moeen and he was rewarded with a prize wicket – a reward, too, for a carefully-plotted field position. Smith, on 33, advanced down the pitch, but Moeen floated the ball down leg, a little turn taking the ball further away from the batsman, who became entirely squared up and toppled over to the off side as he chipped the ball to short mid-on.Clarke also came down the wicket with intent and, if his shot was more balanced than Smith’s, the outcome was equally ill-fated as he drove back a firm return catch. Voges’ dismissal owed much to England’s ability to create pressure with the old ball, Ben Stokes being rewarded for one of his most disciplined England spells by having Voges caught at short extra as the ball took a puff of dust from the pitch.Moeen’s graceful batting, sprinkled with occasional fortune, had also been to the fore in the morning before England succumbed for 430, adding another 97 in only 14.1 overs. Moeen played with delightful freedom in extending his innings to 77 from 88 balls before he edged Mitchell Starc to Shane Watson at slip. He also edged Starc to the keeper on 34, but Australia, strangely introverted, did not appeal as they were fooled by the bat scraping the ground.Starc then bowled Anderson to return 5 for 114 but he has ankle trouble and, although he will hope to get through the Test unscathed, he must be doubtful for the second Test at Lord’s which follows so soon afterwards. As for Mitchell Johnson’s Reign of Terror, the first signs were that it may not be fit for export as he returned his worst Test figures. Johnson remained wicketless, he doffed his cap to the crowd as his bowler’s century was cheered ironically and he had the misfortune to have to pedal back at long-off in a futile attempt to try to catch a lofted drive from Moeen as he toe-ended Nathan Lyon’s offspin down the ground.Take Broad, add an Ashes series, and the result is invariably some hoo-ha or other. On this occasion he was the potential victim as Voges claimed a dubious catch at short leg. For the only time, Broad tried to stand tall to a bouncer from Johnson, squirmed the ball into the leg side and Voges was entangled between the batsman’s feet by the time he claimed the catch. The review showed that the ball dragged along the ground and boos predictably resounded, but Broad and Voges, former team-mates at Nottinghamshire, just had a quick chat and got on with it, Broad soon falling trying to slog sweep Lyon’s first ball.

Confident ODI sides resume battle of spin

Bangladesh and South Africa face each other for the first time in ODIs since the 2011 World Cup and Bangladesh are riding high on confidence after series wins against Pakistan and India

The Preview by Mohammad Isam09-Jul-2015Match factsFriday, July 10
Start time 1500 local (0900 GMT)1:47

Isam: Bangladesh look to secure Champions Trophy 2017 berth

Big pictureAfter Bangladesh had taken a 2-0 lead in the ODI series against India last month, R Ashwin said that it looked as if the hosts owned the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Ten days into the tour and with a 2-0 win in the T20 series, South Africa haven’t yet seen that side of the home team although they could expect a harder challenge in Bangladesh’s favourite format. The visitors are also hit by the absence of their ODI captain AB de Villiers, who has been released from the squad following his unavailability for the first match due a one-match ban for a slow over-rate during the World Cup. His absence will undoubtedly be welcomed by Bangladesh who can now focus on the rest of the South Africa players without worrying about the biggest threat. This match will be played under the new ODI rules, in which there need not be compulsory fielders in the 15-yard circle. In addition to the removal of the batting Powerplay and free-hits for all no-balls, five fielders are now allowed outside the 30-yard circle during the last 10 overs.Bangladesh also have to remain within the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings by the end of this series. They are currently at No. 7 with 93 points but the sudden announcement of West Indies joining Pakistan and Zimbabwe in a tri-series next month means they will have to win at least one match to book their qualification for the 2017 Champions Trophy. In spite of the loss in the T20 series, Bangladesh will be high on confidence after their series wins against Pakistan and India in the last few months.History, however, is on South Africa’s side. They have only lost one ODI, in the 2007 World Cup, out of 14 matches against Bangladesh. But without de Villiers, South Africa will have a point to prove.Form guideBangladesh: LWWWW
South Africa: LWWLWPlayers to watchSoumya Sarkar has failed to convert good starts in to substantial scores quite often in his short career. He did the same in the second T20 and Bangladesh would want him to kick on if he manages to start well.Bangladesh struggled against spin in the first two T20s and Imran Tahir could take advantage of the home batsmen’s mindset. He was the joint-highest wicket-taker in the 2014 World T20 in Bangladesh, with 12 wickets in five games at an economy-rate of 6.55.Team newsWith Mahmudullah back, Litton Das and Anamul Haque will have to wait for their chance in the top order. However, Bangladesh will have to decide on the bowling combination and accordingly take a call between legspinner Jubair Hossain, Rubel Hossain and Arafat Sunny.Bangladesh (possible) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Mahmudullah, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Sabbir Rahman, 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Arafat Sunny, 10 Jubair Hossain/Rubel Hossain, 11 Mustafizur RahmanGiven their performances in the T20s, Kyle Abbott and Aaron Phangiso could retain their places in the ODI side. However, one of Ryan McLaren or Wayne Parnell may come in for Phangiso.South Africa (possible): 1 Hashim Amla (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 Rilee Rossouw, 5 David Miller, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Farhaan Behardien, 8 Ryan McLaren/Wayne Parnell/Aaron Phangiso, 9 Kyle Abbott, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran TahirPitch and conditionsThere are hints from within the Bangladesh team that the Mirpur pitch is likely to play in favour of batsmen, which means it will be slow without much turn. But there has been plenty of rain in the previous 24 hours and the square has been under covers. Daytime thunderstorms followed by a clear evening are forecast.Stats and trivia Among the two squads, Hashim Amla has the most runs in Bangladesh-South Africa ODIs with 251 runs at an average of 62.75 Five players from each of the current squads played in the last match between Bangladesh and South Africa, in the 2011 World Cup Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza need two and four wickets respectively to reach 200 ODI wickets for Bangladesh. Currently the highest wicket-taker is Abdur Razzak with 207Quotes”I would still say we had two bad days. In cricket not every day is the same. The whole team is hoping that we get over those bad games.”
“The guys were extremely well in the T20 series so I think the rest of the team will come with some confidence as well as real experience of what had happened couple of days ago.”
