O Sampaoli busca sempre a intensidade dentro do jogo. É um treinador vencedor. O modo é bem diferente do habitual.

West Indies strike after taking big lead

West Indies were in danger of conceding an embarrassing first-innings lead on home soil to Test irregulars Zimbabwe before Darren Sammy played a game-turning knock

The Report by Abhishek Purohit13-Mar-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDarren Sammy powered to 73 off 69 balls•West Indies Cricket

Smart stats

Darren Sammy’s 73 is his second-highest score and his fifth score of fifty or more. His highest is 106 against England at Trent Bridge in 2012.

The 106-run stand between Sammy and Denesh Ramdin is the highest seventh-wicket partnership for West Indies against Zimbabwe. It is also their third-highest seventh-wicket stand in Tests in Barbados.

Marlon Samuels’ 51 is his 18th half-century. Since the Lord’s Test last year, he has scored three centuries and five fifties at an average of 83.36.

Kyle Jarvis’ 5 for 54 is his best bowling performance (and second five-for) in Tests. It is also the first five-for by a Zimbabwe bowler against West Indies since Ray Price’s 5 for 199 in Bulawayo in 2003.

West Indies have lost on only two previous occasions in Barbados (both batting first) despite taking the lead. The most recent was against Australia when Michael Clarke declared 43 runs behind and Australia went on to win by three wickets.

West Indies were in danger of conceding an embarrassing first-innings lead on home soil to Test irregulars Zimbabwe, playing their first match in over a year. At 151 for 6 in pursuit of 211, the captain Darren Sammy arrived and did what he normally does. He attacked. And for once, he survived long enough. The result was a 69-ball 73 that turned the game and sent Zimbabwe into defensive mode, like Marlon Samuels’ assault in the morning had done. It also gave West Indies a sizeable lead, the importance of which was driven home when Zimbabwe lost three quick wickets towards the close. Both innings came when Zimbabwe were in a position to exert pressure, but couldn’t, largely due to one bowler consistently leaking runs. Samuels had targeted Graeme Cremer, not allowing him to settle as he took 32 off 26 deliveries from the legspinner. Brendan Taylor persisted with Cremer, over his other specialist spinner Ray Price, and Sammy took further toll. Forty-seven of Sammy’s runs came off the 28 balls he faced from Cremer. In contrast, Price bowled just 27 deliveries to Sammy and Samuels combined, and conceded only seven. All Sammy and Samuels wanted to do was to hit boundaries, which is what Zimbabwe allowed them, with Cremer serving up long hops and overpitched deliveries. All the four sixes Sammy hit came against Cremer, as did most of his fours. When Cremer bowled full, Sammy powered him straight down the ground. When he dropped it short often, he was pulled over midwicket. Samuels cut and pulled Cremer despite the bounce in the pitch, and also stepped out to drive him against the turn through midwicket. By the time the restrictive Price was given more bowling, the damage had already been done.Denesh Ramdin played an important knock, giving solid support to Sammy during their century partnership for the seventh wicket. Then, after Sammy chopped Hamilton Masakadza onto his stumps shortly before tea, Ramdin patiently built the lead further along with Tino Best, who became Kyle Jarvis’ fifth victim to end the innings. The part-time medium of Masakadza had claimed Samuels as well, off what proved to be the last ball before lunch. Samuels was in imperious touch on his comeback from facial injury, but could not resist going for one more boundary, and edged Masakadza to the wicketkeeper. Till that moment, Samuels hadn’t let West Indies feel any strain after the big wickets of Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo. He’d come out and gone after the bowling so clinically that it was Zimbabwe who felt constrained enough to let Price start with a defensive line outside leg.Jarvis had given Zimbabwe an early opening when he switched to round the wicket and had Bravo edging to the wicketkeeper in the ninth over of the day. At 43 for 3, West Indies should have been made to grind for their runs. Samuels and Gayle had other ideas.Samuels hit Cremer out of the attack. Gayle drove the seamers through extra cover and down the ground, although he was far more watchful compared to Samuels. He was leaving them outside off stump and defending solidly. It needed something out of the ordinary to dislodge him, and the debutant medium-pacer Tendai Chatara provided that. First ball after the first drinks break, he produced one that reared up at Gayle from short of a good length, and carried to second slip off the glove.Samuels was not going to change his approach despite 81 for 4. Shivnarine Chanderpaul added still more solidity to the batting and the duo’s partnership went past 50 in next to no time. Zimbabwe turned to Masakadza and Price and the pace of scoring came down with lunch approaching, before Samuels threw it away after reaching his fifty in 67 balls.West Indies slipped from 144 for 5 at lunch to 151 for 6 soon after, as Chanderpaul under-edged an attempted pull off Jarvis to the wicketkeeper. Two overs later, Cremer was brought back, probably to lure Sammy to his fall. Only, Sammy wasn’t to be lured today. It was Tino Mawoyo who was lured into chasing a wide, full away-swinging delivery in the eighth over of Zimbabwe’s second innings, only to edge it to Sammy in the slip cordon. It was the first ball Shannon Gabriel bowled, after Kemar Roach and Best had been far too short with the new ball.Zimbabwe’s day, which had begun so promisingly, was to end on a worse note. Masakadza failed to keep his gloves away from Shane Shillingford’s first ball, a seemingly harmless short delivery that carried to backward short leg. Vusi Sibanda tried to turn Shillingford to the leg side, only to offer a tame return catch off the leading edge. After a day on which they could have taken a morale-boosting lead, Zimbabwe were now struggling to avoid defeat on day three.

We were outplayed in the field – du Plessis

Before the Powerplay had ended, South Africa knew they had lost the match. Focusing on that would not give proper attention to where they were actually defeated and du Plessis believed that was on the field

Firdose Moonda in Centurion03-Mar-2013After a defeat as dramatic as the one South Africa suffered, identifying positives is like looking for stars in a murky sky shrouded by clouds. It’s not a fruitless endeavour because if you spot one it may lighten more than just the velvet overhead, but it is a tough one because there are so few.Faf du Plessis found one. “Probably the only thing was AB [de Villiers],” he said. “We would expect AB to work anywhere in a line-up because he has got the skill to attack the bowlers but it was good to see him for well in the opening position. That was the one thing that worked for us today.”Having found the one bright spot, which he was asked to do early in his press engagement, du Plessis was more than ready to front up to South Africa’s failings. To blanket them as everything other than de Villiers’ 36 would be too simplistic. It was a combination of being outplayed by two individuals, inexperience, poor bowling and panicking with bat in hand that conspired to bring South Africa down. The last of those is something they have been through before and even though this time they were skittled out for their lowest T20 total, it was the area du Plessis gave the least attention to.”We know that the shorter the version of the game, the more one individual can win it,” he said. “With Umar Gul, it was just a case of us trying to win the game and going hard at the run rate upfront. I think it was definitely [Mohammad] Hafeez’s 86 that changed the game for them.”When a team posts close to 200, you know it is going to take something very special from your batsmen. One guy is going to have to score close to 100 for you to be in contention to win.” Collectively, South Africa only managed that. Their last nine wickets managed about half of it.Before the Powerplay had ended, South Africa knew they had lost the match. Focusing on that would not give proper attention to where they were actually defeated and du Plessis believed that was on the field. “There was a time when I thought we were giving Hafeez too many options and he was scoring on both sides of the wicket.”He was also finding space easily with South Africa’s fielders unable to cover enough ground and the bowlers offering lengths that allowed Hafeez to pick his spot.Bar Lonwabo Tsotsobe’s first two overs and the occasional good ball from Rory Kleinveldt, the seamers lacked variety and used the slower ball too infrequently, instead hoping their usual approach would work. Du Plessis hopes they have realised it does not. “The bowlers need to practice different varieties. The days of bowling back of a length to a team in South Africa are gone now,” he said. With a pitch du Plessis said was “basically a road,” the gap between the teams was narrowed. The conclusion he made was that, in neutral conditions and in the shorter format, “Pakistan’s skill is better than ours.”He has with him a young squad who do not often play as a unit. They lack cohesion and the spunk to make up for it. Du Plessis believes the only way it will change is by playing more and being open-minded. “We would like to play more T20 cricket to learn and improve, especially improving our skills. Batsman need to have more variety in shots, bowlers need to bowl more slower balls.”The main focus is on the World T20 in Bangladesh in 2014 and those tactics will be needed there. South Africa will also need a strong spin contingent, something they obviously lacked today. Robin Peterson and Justin Ontong gave away 58 runs in their overs to negate themselves as viable options for du Plessis to turn to. “Our spin department will admit their four overs were not good. There were too many bad balls,” he said. With neither the seamers nor the slower bowlers able to tie things up, du Plessis found it a difficult day to be a leader. “The pressure of T20 cricket is more than any other cricket because things happen so fast,” he said. “I just tried to keep everybody calm.”South Africa’s next T20 match is in July when they tour Sri Lanka for a limited-overs visit. The sporadic nature of fixtures makes it difficult for du Plessis to have as much time with his team as he would like.He can only hope experiences in the domestic competition, which is on-going, and at leagues like the IPL will help their development before they reconvene. “My game improved hugely after the IPL just because I was playing more cricket. The more you play, the better you get,” he said. It’s a thought that may lessen the acidity of a loss that left South Africa’s limited-overs approach exposed, again.

-Eu sempre procuro olhar pra frente.

Clarke out of the IPL, saved for the Ashes

Michael Clarke will forsake the IPL in order take much-needed rest at home as the best remedy for back and hamstring problems

Daniel Brettig26-Mar-2013

Michael Clarke’s back and hamstring problems need rest ahead of the Ashes•BCCI

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke will take much-needed rest at home, rather than taking up his likely appointment as captain of the Pune Warriors in the IPL, as the best remedy for the back and hamstring problems that bedevilled his India tour.Clarke underwent scans soon after his arrival in Sydney and ESPNcricinfo understands these showed that his back trouble was caused not by any new source but the same degenerative disc that has afflicted him since his teenage years.Complaints of hamstring discomfort were also assessed, with no evidence found of a new injury, rather the accumulated wear of carrying a tender muscle through the tour after he strained it during the home Test series against Sri Lanka. As a result of these dual problems, Clarke has been advised to rest and then train to strengthen his body rather than linking up with the Warriors. It has been reported that Clarke may be offered as much as A$2 million to lead the IPL franchise after Yuvraj Singh expressed reluctance to be captain, but the risk of fouling up an Ashes campaign that may define his captaincy has been deemed too acute.”Michael Clarke had scans that confirmed his current lower back injury is an exacerbation of previous issues he has had with his spine,” Cricket Australia Chief Medical Officer Justin Paoloni said. “As always, we need to manage this carefully as there are potentially serious consequences with further aggravation.”He still has pain with basic activities and is not back to full function as yet. He also has a hamstring injury that has been a concern for most of the summer and will complicate his return.”Michael is having intensive rehabilitation for both his back and hamstring but is still 7-10 weeks away from returning to training and playing. We are confident that it will not affect his Ashes preparation but will know more over the coming weeks.”On his early return to Sydney following his inability to regain fitness in time for the fourth Test of an ignominious series on the subcontinent, Clarke said he would “listen to the experts” regarding his battered and fatigued body and his IPL participation.”I’ll have scans this week and spend plenty of time with the physio, fingers crossed it turns out okay,” Clarke said. “Sitting down for 12 hours has made it a little bit stiff, but I’m really confident that I’m in good hands with my physio here in Sydney.”I’d be silly to make that decision [on the IPL] right now, I think I need to wait on the results, listen to the experts and then make a plan from there. I’ve had my back issues since I was 17 years of age so this is no different. In regards to my hamstring I hurt it throughout the Australian summer and it has just lingered on. I haven’t had the opportunity to get that 100% fit due to how much cricket we’ve had.”The national team’s coach Mickey Arthur, the national selector John Inverarity and the team performance manager Pat Howard have no formal right to bar a player from participating in the IPL, as the tournament’s span has been defined by Cricket Australia as a leave period. However they are likely to privately advise various players of their preferences, as was done last year when Shane Watson was counselled to stay out of the event.
