Gautam Gambhir has said that the India batsmen got complacent after making 314 in the first ODI against Sri Lanka and has termed the big loss in the second game a “wake-up call” early in the season. He has, however, pointed out that some of the India players could be rusty as they are coming out of a near-two-month break while Sri Lanka have just won a tough series against Pakistan.”Sometimes what happens is when you have made 300-plus runs and you are coming after a break and end up winning the first game, you can take things for granted thinking that we have got 300, so we can again turn up and get 300,” Gambhir said. “It is a good wake-up call for us that we can’t.”Our energy levels were not up for it. All of us were thinking, we managed 300, we have won the toss again, we are batting first in those flat conditions, [so] we can again turn up and get 300-plus and try and restrict Sri Lanka but then that is not the way you go into a game. You have to go into the game thinking [that] Sri Lanka will come hard at you and [it is a] new wicket, new conditions, new start.”We can’t take Sri Lanka lightly at any stage. They are a very good side especially in their own backyard so it is important that we got to be ready for this challenge tomorrow and whatever they throw at us we should be able to give it back to them.”MS Dhoni had said earlier that India rely a lot on the starts provided by the top three batsmen – Virender Sehwag, Gambhir and Virat Kohli in this series. Sehwag and Kohli fell early in the second game, and before the batsmen could assess the pitch, according to Dhoni, India were 60 for 5. Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lanka vice-captain, said his side would target the India top order again tomorrow.”When it comes to the top order, they make a huge difference,” Mathews said. “If we can get a few wickets early on, we can put pressure on the middle order batsmen. In the first two games they didn’t have the time to get set and score.”The first two matches were in Hambantota, where it was so windy that Sehwag said batsmen were being thrown off their stance. Up north-west in Colombo, the conditions have changed to hot and humid; the humidity, especially, can be very tiring. Gambhir, however, said that India shouldn’t bother too much about the conditions.”Breeze was playing a huge role in Hambantota. At times it was difficult to play on one side of the wicket especially against the breeze because it was so strong,” Gambhir said. “We all know that the Premadasa is a flat track and there are great opportunities of making big scores. It is pretty humid so we need to get adjusted to it as soon as possible.”We should be raring to go rather than thinking what are the conditions and how are the conditions. As a professional cricketer you need to get used to these conditions as soon as possible and try and get the results in your favour.”The Premadasa pitch, before being relaid for the 2011 World Cup, used to heavily favour the side batting first as the ball would move around in the evening. While Gambhir felt it would still do a bit under lights, Mathews said that the pitch doesn’t change much now for the chasing side and referred to Sri Lanka’s successful chase last month against Pakistan at the same ground.

O Fla-Flu deste sábado coloca frente a frente a balança do investimento. De um lado, a maior contratação da história do Flamengo, com montante de R$ 44 milhões, vinda da Europa e apresentação em um Maracanã lotado. Do outro, um nome até então desconhecido do grande público e uma chegada tímida ao Fluminense, por empréstimo junto ao São Bento, do interior de São Paulo, sem custos. As expectativas em torno das contratações de Vitinho e Everaldo foram bem diferentes e, inicialmente, inversamente proporcional às respostas em campo.
Neste sábado, no Maracanã, Vitinho, pelo Flamengo, e Everaldo, pelo Fluminense, buscam boas atuações para, quem sabe, marcar o nome na história do clássico.
Vitinho chegou ao Flamengo no fim de julho. De lá para cá, 17 participações e um gol, contra o Internacional. O jogador, que estava no CSKA, da Rússia, inicialmente, não conseguiu engrenar e alternou jogos como titular e reserva. Contra o Corinthians, porém, teve boa atuação – ele mesmo considerou a melhor até aqui com a camisa rubro-negra.
O camisa 14 estreou pelo Fla logo no começo de agosto, contra o Grêmio, na Copa do Brasil, em jogo que terminou empatado em 1 a 1. O jogador, que foi contratado para ser o substituto de Vinicius Júnior, já foi testado também como um “falso 9”.
Em recente entrevista ao LANCE!, Mauricio Barbieri, ex-técnico do Flamengo, falou sobre Vitinho, ressaltando que é necessário um tempo de adaptação.
-Muito se fala desta questão do valor que envolveu, contratação mais cara, mas lembro que o Everton Ribeiro, até então, era a contratação mais cara e, quando eu cheguei ao clube, era tido como alguém que não tinha dado certo. Levou um tempo para ele se adaptar e ele vem fazendo um ano próximo do que se espera dele. Acho que, com o Vitinho, é inevitável que aconteça isso. É um jogador de qualidade. Acho que as pessoas atrelaram o valor ao rendimento imediato dele, mas não podemos perder de vista que o valor está atrelado ao que ele vai entregar no futuro e até uma possibilidade de revenda dele, onde o Flamengo vai recuperar esse valor. Não é porque o Flamengo pagou 10 milhões (de euros, cerca de R$ 44 milhões) que ele vai chegar e fazer um gol toda semana – disse.

Poucos dias antes, Everaldo acertava com o Tricolor. Neste período, também fez 18 jogos e tem um gol a mais, contra o Deportivo Cuenca (EQU) e a Chapecoense. Porém, mesmo em pouco tempo, parece ter caídos nas graças da torcida, que inclusive, já fez canções para o jogador. O custo-benefício faz de Everaldo um dos melhores investimentos desta temporada. O contrato de empréstimo do atacante é válido até 17 de maio de 2019 junto ao Velo Clube, time do interior de São Paulo. O acordo fixa 50% dos direitos do atleta na casa dos R$ 2 milhões, valor considerado dentro do orçamento para um clube que vive dificuldades financeiras.

Brett D’Oliveira has expressed interest in playing in Cape Town, the city where his grandfather, Basil, the former England Test batsman, first made his name. Brett had a short stint at the St Augustine’s Cricket Club in November last year but had to cut short his visit because of Basil’s death.”It was unfortunate that I had to leave then but I’m looking to go back this year or the year after,” D’Oliveira told ESPNcricinfo in Worcester.He also has bigger ambitions of playing provincial or franchise cricket in South Africa.”I have considered playing there quite a bit. I spoke to my dad about it and he is quite keen for me to do it. He said there will be a lot of things around it, like the press will want to speak to me, and that sort of thing, but I’m happy to do it.”I spent a little bit of time with Paul Adams when I was in Cape Town. He is a legspinner like me, but left-arm, and he was a great guy to talk to and feed off.”At 20, Brett is the youngest cricketer of the D’Oliveira family, who consider themselves “very much British” according to his father Damian. But the D’Oliverias also want to maintain ties with the land of Basil’s birth.”We have lots of family over there, on my mother’s side, especially,” Damian said. “We met a lot of the family when the two teams [England and South Africa] played at the beginning of 2005, and my brother’s just come back from a trip there as well.”When he signed up with Worcestershire last August, Brett became a third-generation D’Oliveira to play for the county. Damian has been associated with the club for 30 years now, having played 234 first-class games over 13 years and then been involved at the county’s academy and also as the second team coach.”I’m very proud of Brett,” Damian said. “He came through the ranks, all the under-age little cricket games from Under-10 to U-19s, got a place on the academy, did four years there and got his first contract this year.”Brett describes New Road as his “second home” and said he remembers visiting as a young boy to watch his father and grandfather play. “I love playing in front of the crowds that have seen my granddad play and my dad play, so I relish it, really. Permanently, I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else or play anywhere else.”
