No lugar do zagueiro, Yago e Marcelo Benevenuto disputam posição.

West Indies grind on dour day

By the end of a rain-shortened opening day, neither side could claim any real advantage but Kraigg Brathwaite’s stubborn half-century and Kirk Edwards’ 61 had given the hosts something to build on

The Report by Brydon Coverdale07-Apr-2012

There’s no doubt about it: the Test series has started. After two weeks of limited-overs games between these two teams and while the IPL, with its promise of immediate gratification, gets under way in India, West Indies and Australia played out a dour first day in Barbados. By the end of a rain-shortened day, neither side could claim any real advantage but Kraigg Brathwaite’s stubborn half-century and Kirk Edwards’ 61 had given the hosts something to build on.An afternoon shower halted proceedings after 73 hard-fought overs in which West Indies had inched along to 179 for 3. The Australians had not long removed the limpet-like Brathwaite for 57 from 199 deliveries only to be greeted by the sight of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who during the last Caribbean series between the sides enjoyed a batting stretch of 18 hours without being dismissed, walking to the crease. When play was abandoned for the day, Chanderpaul was on 8 and Darren Bravo had made 20 from 60 deliveries, and their partnership loomed as a key for both sides with Narsingh Deonarine the only specialist batsman still to come. The two men were hoping to build on the platform constructed by Brathwaite and Edwards but should Australia separate them early on day two, the work of the top order might be annulled.Bravo had shown some inclination to attack early in his innings as he launched the occasional legspin of David Warner high into the stands over long-on, but he was quiet after that. It didn’t help that he lost the established Brathwaite, who tickled behind off Peter Siddle to give the debutant wicketkeeper Matthew Wade his first catch in Test cricket. It was the end of a gritty but far from unblemished innings from Brathwaite, who now has four half-centuries from his seven Tests but is yet to move beyond the 60s. The Australians dropped Brathwaite twice and Edwards once in an untidy fielding display and their partnership was allowed to blossom to 104 runs thanks to the let-offs.Brathwaite was put down on 10 when he pushed a ball from Siddle uppishly back to the left of the bowler, who misjudged the chance and spilled the catch with his left hand. Another life came on 44, when Ricky Ponting at second slip grassed a tough diving opportunity off Shane Watson. The simplest of all the lives was the chance given to Edwards on 56 when he edged a fullish wide ball from Siddle and Watson at fourth slip saw a sitter bounce out of his hands. Fortunately for Watson, Edwards added only five more to his score before on 61 he gave Warner his first Test wicket and just his second in first-class cricket.Warner bowled some good balls during his spell, flighting the ball to encourage strokeplay, and Edwards obliged by driving a delivery hard back at the bowler. But Warner’s reflexes were good enough and he snapped up an excellent return catch low to his right, rewarding the willingness of the captain Michael Clarke to try new things in the search for a partnership breaker. The only wicket in the first session had come when Adrian Barath, on 22 from 54 balls, fell for an obvious plan as Ryan Harris came around the wicket with a short-leg and deep backward square leg in position. The bouncer was bowled and Barath obliged with an attempted hook that flew off the top edge and was easily taken by Siddle at deep backward square leg.But that brought Edwards and Brathwaite together and they dug in to deny Australia’s bowlers. Brathwaite is renowned as an old-fashioned style of opener, one whose first priority is survival and a player for whom scoring appears to be an afterthought. That was precisely how he played his first Test innings at his home ground, Kensington Oval.He took few risks, although a couple of drives flew off the edge through gaps, and his four boundaries all came behind the wicket. He ended the innings with a strike-rate of 32.80 in his short Test career, comfortably the lowest of regular specialist batsmen in Tests in the past year, but West Indies would prefer an opener who can grind out a half-century than one who flashes and falls quickly.Generally, it was up to Brathwaite’s partners to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Edwards did that through some confident strokeplay down the ground against the offspin of Nathan Lyon. Edwards lifted Lyon over long-on for a six and was happy to drive him along the ground, while he also picked off the fast men when they strayed on to his pads. His half-century came with an impressive loft over long-off against the legspin of Warner from his 97th delivery, whereas Brathwaite took 163 balls to bring up his fifty. Together they caused problems for Australia’s fast men, who found early swing but couldn’t force enough shots to make it dangerous.Harris was included and James Pattinson was named 12th man, and there were times when Clarke must have wished for Pattinson’s explosiveness and ability to run through an order. By the close of play Australia had fought back but the first session of day two loomed as a big one for both teams.

Chennai hold nerve in tight game

Chennai Super Kings raised their game in front of their home supporters to even the score with Pune Warriors, defending 164 with an all-round performance

The Report by Kanishkaa Balachandran19-Apr-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMS Dhoni provided the late flourish for Chennai Super Kings•AFP

Chennai Super Kings raised their game in front of their home supporters to even the score with Pune Warriors, to whom they had lost five days ago. Warriors needed 21 off the last over, achievable by this tournament’s standards, but couldn’t finish the job. The Warriors had their moments with the bat but couldn’t sustain their partnerships, thanks to some sharp catching and miserly death bowling by the hosts. On a pitch with variable bounce, and the sapping humidity to deal with, it was a commendable effort by Super Kings’ Faf du Plessis and S Badrinath to stage the first century opening stand of the season, 116. The surface was slow, and as a result, the openers used their feet against the seamers to get to the pitch of the ball.Du Plessis was dropped early in his innings – albeit a tough chance – but he continued to look positive, lofting Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the second tier over long-on and then chipping down the track in a 14-run over, the costliest in the first half of the innings. He had another let-off on 40, when he went down the track to Marlon Samuels and was beaten by the low bounce, only for the wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa to fluff a stumping. Luck was on his side again the following over, when on 51, he attempted a quick single to cover, turned back and dived at the crease. The third umpire studied several replays but gave du Plessis the benefit of the doubt as he wasn’t convinced that the bail was completely off the groove before he made his ground.Badrinath vindicated the decision to replace the out-of-form M Vijay at the top by getting a fifty of his own. He was circumspect against the spinners, and didn’t always find the right timing, especially with the slog. But three consecutive boundaries off Bhuvneshwar fast-tracked him to his half-century.The Warriors then clawed back by getting rid of the pair in the next over. Both fell in similar manner, holing out to Angelo Mathews trying to slog. It wasn’t the worst thing to happen for Super Kings as MS Dhoni helped his team bash 39 off the last three overs, which included a helicopter-shot for four which nearly cleaned out the bowler and umpire, and a six which cleared the roof. The Warriors were halted in their chase by some terrific catching by Super Kings, starting with Robin Uthappa’s early departure. He spliced it to mid-off where R Ashwin timed his dive and plucked it inches from the ground. Jesse Ryder pulled Nuwan Kulasekara to deep midwicket where Dwayne Bravo followed up his diving catch with a dance. A couple of overs later, Badrinath had to cover a lot of ground to catch a skier to send back Manish Pandey.Prior to Pandey’s fall, Sourav Ganguly had just knocked 18 off a Doug Bollinger over which featured three pleasing boundaries to the on side. However, the spinners applied the stranglehold in the next five overs, as the run-rate dropped from 8.83 to 6.50. Marlon Samuels broke the rut with two boundaries off Shadab Jakati and a top-edged six off Bravo, but the slower pace of Ashwin led him to spoon a catch to short cover. Warriors needed 68 off 40 when he departed, but they were leaving the rest to their last recognised pair.Steven Smith and Mathews failed to bisect the gaps in the field, as the Warriors managed just two boundaries in the last eight overs. Super Kings threw themselves around in the field, and the bowlers, importantly, didn’t dish out full tosses to give the batsmen any chance. Bollinger conceded just four and took a wicket in the penultimate over, and Bravo’s slower balls in particular made the task tougher for Super Kings.Though the century stand set them up to a competitive 164, Dhoni’s final blaze made the difference in a evenly fought contest.

Disappointed, but not panicking – India A coach

Lalchand Rajput is disappointed the fancied batting line-up didn’t click as a unit, but is not alarmed about the future of India’s middle order

Shami Ahmed and Cheteshwar Pujara: two positives from a bleak tour•WICB

Lalchand Rajput, the coach of the touring India A side in the West Indies, is disappointed the fancied batting line-up didn’t click as a unit, but is not alarmed about the future of India’s middle order after a side full of Test aspirants failed to reach 300 in any of the innings of the three first-class matches against West Indies A. The sheer amount of international experience in India A’s middle order – Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Manoj Tiwary – made them favourites going into the series, but none of them scored a century, and India A lost the series even after having won the first match.”It’s fair to say we didn’t think the series would go this way,” Rajput said from Port-of-Spain where the limited-overs leg of the tour will commence. “They bowled really well too. Delorn Johnson took 17 wickets in the series, and Jason Holder was good as well. Ours was a strong batting line-up that never clicked as a unit. The conditions were difficult, but we should have done better.”India A’s first two wickets invariably yielded little, and the middle order always found itself under pressure and exposed to the new ball. In the six innings, the first two wickets added respectively 0 and 1, 4 and 8, 1 and 11, 14 and 14, 16 and 16, and 22 and 1. “We were a very strong batting unit,” Rajput said. “But we never clicked together. In six innings we never had an opening stand. We were always 20 for 3 or 30 for 3. If you want a big score, the top three have to fire.”Those who followed gave a relatively better account of themselves: Pujara crossed fifty thrice, Wriddhiman Saha twice, and Rohit and Tiwary once each. One of Pujara’s fifties was a special effort of 96 in the chase of 186 in the first match, in Barbados, after the visitors had been reduced to 77 for 6 and 115 for 8. India A would have hoped to carry some momentum and psychological edge into the next match, but losing the toss proved crucial on a pitch that was turning square on the fourth morning. Put in on a damp morning in the third match, the India A top order came up short once again, and even Pujara, who had scored three half-centuries in four innings until then, was run out before he could make a difference. The first-class matches of this tour were particularly important for the young Indian batsmen after Rahul Dravid’s retirement earlier this year. The selectors won’t get to watch another first-class match before they pick the team for the first of the 10 Tests this home season. Rajput said there was no need to panic, and that this tour was an important experience for the youngsters.”It’s actually good that we are exposing them in conditions abroad before they get into the Test side,” Rajput said. “It will help them. They’ll know what to expect when they go abroad. It’s a good idea for them to get exposure at an early stage in their career.”They should know relatively early that playing abroad is different. They now know what they need to work on. Life is difficult when you go and play abroad. You have to work hard. Still they are sound players. Don’t write them off based on this tour.”Pujara’s temperament, Saha’s keeping, Rohit’s start, and the surprise package, Bengal quick Shami Ahmed, were the positives of the series, Rajput said. “Pujara’s in Bridgetown was one of the best innings I have ever seen,” Rajput said. “When you lose eight wickets, you put together that partnership to win the Test, it was tremendous. He showed a lot of character and temperament. Top performance.”The man who stood alongside Pujara during that match-winning effort was Ahmed, who impressed Rajput a lot. “He is strong, bowls at a sharp pace, and throughout the day,” Rajput said. “Even in the third spell of the day, he bowls around 140kmph. Even when batting he doesn’t give up. You have to get him out. He is one bowler to watch out for.”Saha showed similar resilience, Rajput said, scoring two fifties in tough batting conditions. His keeping on tough pitches was impressive too. Rohit got 94 in the first innings of the tour, but never kicked on after that. It summed up India A’s effort: “They got starts, but couldn’t convert them. Had they converted them, the story would have been different.”
