– O gol no final…

Tendulkar won't stop – Kirsten

Sachin Tendulkar has said he is still enjoying his cricket and doesn’t see any reason to hang up his boots, while Gary Kirsten said he didn’t think Tendulkar would stop playing just yet

After winning the World Cup, Sachin Tendulkar said he had achieved the one thing he had dreamt about when he started playing cricket. But he may not hang up his boots just yet. When asked about retirement, Tendulkar deflected the question initially, before saying he saw no reason to change things as he was still enjoying the game.”This is a moment to celebrate, not one to think about my future,” Tendulkar told the ICC. “This is the reason I started playing cricket; to do something for the country. The process has been a long one, and I am still enjoying my game, so I don’t see the reason to change anything.”Gary Kirsten, for whom the World Cup final was his last game as coach of India, also said he didn’t think Tendulkar would stop here. “Sachin is the greatest sporting role model I’ve met in my life,” Kirsten said. “He’s had an incredible last three or four years, and he’s enjoying his cricket even more. I don’t think he is going to stop.”Tendulkar had to wait till his sixth World Cup campaign to win the trophy, and when asked whether this was the final accolade he needed to complete his closet-full of achievements, he said it was in fact the first thing he wanted to achieve.”As a young boy I dreamt of winning this trophy; that’s where it all started. This is by far the best moment and it’s the one I’ve been waiting for for 24 years. There have been heart-breaking losses; in past campaigns we lost in the semi-finals and finals. I never gave up because this was my dream and now the team has managed to win this cup for the nation.”After their victory on Saturday, the Indian team spent the night celebrating with their families and friends before going to Raj Bhavan on Sunday to meet the Indian president. But what Tendulkar is looking forward to is sharing the experience with the Indian public.”The victory hasn’t sunk in yet because I haven’t faced the general crowd outside. I’ve just mingled around with my friends and family. We’ve been in a close unit behind a wall of security. We haven’t had a chance to experience or share our joy with everyone else. That’s a reaction I’m really looking forward to because I can imagine what it would be like. All I’ve seen is their reactions on the news channels and it’s absolutely fascinating.”India have now achieved the two things Kirsten had planned on during his tenure as coach: winning the World Cup and attaining the No. 1 ranking in Tests, but he gave all the credit to his team.”The players are the ones who have had to deal with the pressure and expectations,” he said. “They’ve prepared hard and when they’ve had to make the plays and make the contributions under pressure they’ve done that.”The final at the Wankhede Stadium started with an odd incident where the toss had to be redone because the match referee had not heard Kumar Sangakkara’s call. Dhoni thought he had won the toss initially, but Kirsten said they weren’t too worried anyway.”I didn’t hear too much about what happened at the toss, but we just got on with it because we had already spoken about how we would face obstacles in the final. We would have batted first, but we felt confident after the Australia chase that it didn’t matter whether we won or lost the toss. We would have liked to bat first and put up a big total, but cometh the hour cometh the man, and MS Dhoni left his big knock of the World Cup for the final.”While Dhoni, Tendulkar and Man-of-the-Tournament Yuvraj Singh have been the centre of attention after the win, India’s campaign has had several heroes. Zaheer Khan finished as the joint-leading wicket-taker in the tournament, with 21 scalps, and though his figures on Saturday were marred by an expensive last two overs, Kirsten acknowledged his opening spell of 5-3-6-1 played a key role in restricting Sri Lanka to a chaseable target.”Zak’s early spell was what kept them down to 270 despite a strong finish by them. We kept them anchored in their innings; they couldn’t really get going. [Mahela] Jayawardene’s incredible knock gave them some momentum and they did well to get to where they did. But we felt 270 was very gettable.”There has been much speculation about what Kirsten will do next, but, though he acknowledged he had been approached about the position of coach of the South African side, he said he would take a month or two off before making any decisions.”I’m going to take some time off and spend some time with my family who haven’t seen me in a while, and I’ll decide on my future after one or two months. South Africa have approached me, but I’ve told them I’m not going to make any decisions just yet. I’m going to clear my mind for a while after this magnificent journey.”

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians in Jaipur

The Preview by Nitin Sundar28-Apr-2011Match factsFriday, April 29, Jaipur
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)Shane Warne v Sachin Tendulkar: Delighting cricket fans since 1992•AFP

Big pictureJust for a moment, abandon all affiliations and consider the sheer magic in the following line: Tendulkar c Dravid b Warne. If that happens, irrespective of the runs against Tendulkar’s name, it will be the most poetic entry to ever make its way into a cricket scorecard. The beauty of the IPL is that it offers the possibility for something this special. The tragedy of Twenty20 is that it offers a really miniscule window of opportunity for the stars to align.
Will Warne get to bowl even a single ball at Tendulkar in Jaipur? Will he entice Tendulkar with loop and guile? Will Tendulkar just play him out and look to go after the faster bowlers? Or will Warne play defensive and bowl outside the leg stump? Will Tendulkar respond with those murderous slog sweeps against the spin, that made headlines when Australia toured India in 1998? Will Tendulkar perish first ball, edging a sharp legbreak, hurtling fast past the lone first slip? Will Dravid leap across and snap it one-handed the way he has done so often to Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh? Even if you are the biggest critic of the IPL, this is not a game you want to miss. And now for a moment, take your minds off the legends who will clash on Friday. The teams are not evenly matched. Mumbai Indians are muscling their way through the group stages, crushing opponents with their unmatched depth. Kochi Tuskers had to play out of their skins to hand them their only defeat, and Rajasthan Royals will have to do likewise if they are to shock Tendulkar’s men. In Shane Watson and Ross Taylor, they have players capable of producing the kind of high-impact performances on which Twenty20 upsets are founded. Johan Botha and Dravid are the prime-movers of the side, soaking the pressure and ensuring things go according to Warne’s grand plans. But if Rajasthan are to make a dent on Mumbai’s record, they will need their unknowns – Siddharth Trivedi, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Menaria and co. – to stand up.Form guide (most recent first)Mumbai: WWWLW (first in points table)

Team talkMumbai might have finally moved past their James Franklin obsession. Davy Jacobs adds spark to balance Sachin Tendulkar’s stability at the top of the order. Play ESPNcricinfo Team selector. In the spotlightAjinkya Rahane, like fellow domestic giant Cheteshwar Pujara, has struggled to make an impact in the IPL. Their teams have also been guilty of wasting their abilities, by pushing them too low down the order. Elsewhere, S Badrinath has been prolific for Chennai thanks to getting opportunities at Nos. 3 and 4. Will Warne promote Rahane against Mumbai, incidentally his Ranji side and former IPL team?Abu Nechim has the ability to surprise batsmen with an extra yard of pace. He also has the knack of producing extra lift from a length. Will Shane Watson look to tame him with his emphatic pull shots?Prime numbers In six matches, Kieron Pollard has got to bat in only three innings, has faced only three balls, and is yet to score his first run
Shane Warne has moved past Pragyan Ojha and is now second in the all-time highest IPL wicket-takers list. RP Singh, with 56 wickets, is three ahead of him The chatter”This will be the first time I’ll play against Sachin. I’ll try to have a word with him. It would be great, if I can pick up some tips from him.”

Todos participaram do treino deste sábado.

Jayawardene backs aggressive Sreesanth

There have been far worse characters in international cricket compared to Sreesanth who needs his much-criticised aggression to perform as a fast bowler, according to Mahela Jayawardene, his IPL captain

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Apr-2011

Mahela Jayawardene: Sreesanth the bowler needs all the aggression•AFP

There have been far worse characters in international cricket compared to Sreesanth, who needs his much-criticised aggression to perform as a fast bowler, according to Mahela Jayawardene, captain of Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the IPL. Jayawardene said the franchise did not want to curb his aggression as that could affect his performance.”We want him to be aggressive. I think that’s what he is all about. You need characters like him. You had much worse characters in international cricket in the last 20 years and I don’t think Sree is that harmful to the game,” Jayawardene said. “But I think if we can control him, we can have ourselves a very successful bowler for Kochi as well as for India.”Sreesanth has had repeated run-ins with match officials for his inability to control his behaviour on the field, but Jayawardene said the fast bowler was at his best when he could channelise his hostility. “I think you need to identify the individuals. Sree performs well in that manner. You take that from him and he might not do well. He’s a very aggressive bowler but I have noticed he has toned down in the last one year. That’s why he got to be a part of India’s World Cup squad.”It is nice to have characters like Sreesanth in the dressing room, Jayawardene said. “Brilliant to have him; he just needs to reduce the volume on his i-Pod as well as the speakers. With him and Murali around, nothing can go wrong for us.”Kochi lost their opening IPL game to Royal Challengers Bangalore but the match was close until AB de Villiers’ assault in the 18th over of Bangalore’s chase, which went for 20 runs. Jayawardene said that he had thought the first game for the new franchise would prove to be much tougher than it turned out to be. “We have been bonding very well. We had a great last outing. I thought there would be many hiccups in our first game, that didn’t happen. Everyone is identifying their roles and that is great.”

Warwickshire subside to Lancashire's spinners

For many years Lancashire have been considered the ‘chokers’ of countycricket

For many years Lancashire have been considered the ‘chokers’ of countycricket. Despite possessing some of the most talented squads ofplayers, they’ve not managed to win the County Championship outrightsince 1934.Despite that record, hardly a season has started since without someonepredicting that ‘this could be their year.’ And, bearing in mind thetalent at their disposal, Lancashire’s lack of success is remarkable. But not this year. A Lancashire team lacking a host of departed seniorplayers – the likes of Flintoff, Law, Cork, Loye, Sutcliffe – andunable to afford replacements or the big-name overseas players thathave become familiar at Old Trafford, was seen by most observers asprobable also-rans in this season’s championship. Some even predciteda struggle to avoid relegation.Yet, here they are, with a quarter of the championship season played, sitting on top of the table with three wins out of four. Perhaps thisreally could be the year, after all.If that is to be the case, they will have to rely on some young andrelatively inexperienced cricketer. But if the evidence of this gameis anything to go by, they have the strength in depth to sustain achallenge. Here, Simon Kerrigan rose to the challenge. Just 21 years old, thiswas Kerrigan’s first Championship appearance of the season. And heseized his chance superbly. Kerrigan claimed five wickets for justseven runs as Warwickshire, set an improbable 245 to win, subsided tojust 97 all out.Kerrigan, making excellent use of an unusually poor pitch, sparked aremarkable collapse that saw Warwickshire lose their final sevenwickets for the addition of just 11 runs. In all, Lancashire’s twoleft-arm spinners, Kerrigan and Gary Keedy, took eight wickets fornine runs between them.Afterwards, Lancashire’s coach, Peter Moores, was honest enough toadmit that Kerrigan would not have played had one of the five injuredseamers been available.”Simon would have missed out had one of the seamers been fit,” Moooressaid. “But we’ve always known he’s a good bowler. He’s been in everysquad and he took three five-wicket hauls last year.”There are opportunities at this club. Everyone knows we’ve lost lotsof senior players and that we don’t have the cash to sign an overseasbatter. But we’ve a squad of 19, 16 of which are Lancashire lads, andthey’re all excited about playing. There are some good young playerscoming through here and maybe the fact that no-one was expecting us tochallenge as much this season has done us a bit of a favour.”Ashley Giles, a man who knows a thing or two about left-arm spin, wasalso impressed by Kerrigan. As Warwickshire’s director of cricket putit: “he’s a very, very good bowler and he could become very good.”Well, you know what he means. It may be worth noting that, aside from England selector Giles, bothEngland coach, Andy Flower and Academy Director David Parsons were atEdgbaston to watch this performance. It should be no surprise ifKerrigan is named in the England Lions team which is picked next week. But having been said, he won’t play on many pitches, anywhere in theworld, that suit him as much as this. It was, by any accounts, ashocker. Despite Warwickshire subsiding to their lowest first-classscore this century (not since April 1999, when they were dismissed for86 by Essex at Chelmsford, have Warwickshire been dismissed for under100), Giles refused to blame his batsmen. And that’s what makes this defeat even more galling from aWarwickshire perspective: they had to come to terms with the fact thattheir own groundsman had prepared a pitch pretty much tailor made fortheir opposition. It was a point not lost on Giles.”The pitch suited their attack too much,” he said through grittedteeth afterwards. “We gave away home advantage. There was too muchreliance on the toss and it was too much like Russian Roulette. Ourspin department is a little thin at the moment [first choice spinner,Ant Botha has just undergone a knee operation] so we didn’t want toplay on a wicket that turned square.”I can’t fault the fight our batsmen showed. The odds were againstthem. They were up against two top-class left-arm spinners on a pitchthat was perfect for them.”Not all Warwickshire’s batsmen demonstrated much resistance, however.Mohammad Yousuf, supposedly the most experienced batsman on eitherside, charged down the wicket and, with his head in the air, attemptedto hit Kerrigan into Staffordshire. It was a wretched shot.Ian Bell wasn’t the victim of a great ball, either. Faced with oneslanted down the leg side, Bell attempted to flick it through the legside, but lobbed a leading edge to square-leg. Jonathan Trott, whosimply missed a sweep, battled hard, but never looked fluent. Most of their colleagues, however, were blameless. With the ballspitting and turning sharply, Moores admitted that batting became “alottery.” And, with Essex having won the toss and batted first, whenthe wicket was at its most docile and least indented, it was a lotteryfor which Warwickshire didn’t have a ticket. To make matters worse, Rikki Clarke faces the prospect of beingpenalised for dissent. Clarke, adjudged lbw to a Kerrigan arm-ball,left the pitch brandishing his bat to show that he had made contactwith the ball. He’ll be very fortunate if he escapes censure. It wasn’t just about Kerrigan, of course. Stephen Moore, Luke Procterand Gareth Cross set the platform in Lancashire’s first innings, whileSteven Croft batted well in their second.Lancashire were grateful to James Anderson and Keedy, too. Earlier onthe final day, they suffered a collapse of their own, losing fivewickets for seven runs at one stage, before the tenth-wicket pair putthe game well beyond the hosts with a stand of 35.In the end, however, the target was well beyond Warwickshire, who areleft to ponder two defeats in two and the annoying sense that, bypreparing such a pitch, they had all but committed suicide.
