Roger Mortimer, the New Zealand Cricket performance director who has been under fire since the 4-0 drubbing in the one-day series against Bangladesh earlier this month, has said he should lose his job if New Zealand continue to struggle.”I feel fully responsible for what happened in Bangladesh and if the results continue to go the way they do, I have to be the first person to lose my job – there’s no question about that,” he told New Zealand’s . “I’m a massive advocate of being accountable.”He denied his presence was a distraction, as some critics have claimed, saying it was his role to make sure everyone is focused and “doing what they should be doing,” but conceded that his methods had yet to show results.”We want to see results in India, no doubt. But more importantly for the sport is whether my approach is right. I do think we have a player or two – and I won’t name names – who are starting to show those attributes. But in a cricket team you need a minimum of five or six to really deliver.”So we aren’t making progress yet because we aren’t taking individual responsibility. The only time to do it is when you play. Let’s see what happens in India.”Mortimer, 38, had joined the New Zealand side as a consultant during their previous home season, and took up his current full-time role with them five months ago. He had earlier worked with cyclist Sarah Ulmer and triathlete Hamish Carter, guiding them to Olympic golds in 2004.Last week, the New Zealand board conducted a comprehensive review of the Bangladesh tour, but didn’t made any sweeping changes, preferring to give Daniel Vettori’s men a chance to redeem themselves on the tour of India which starts on November 4.

Australia’s struggling outfit has received some much needed good news after Ryan Harris was cleared of a serious shoulder injury and passed fit for next week’s crucial third Ashes Test. Harris suffered the problem during the heavy loss in Adelaide, where he was the team’s best bowler, but scans showed there was no significant damage.Harris’ health provides only one answer for the battered hosts, who went 1-0 down with the crushing innings defeat on Tuesday. The squad for the Perth match, which starts next Thursday, is expected to be named on Friday and by then the selectors will have had a week of headaches caused by the damaging bowling and batting issues.Mitchell Johnson is in Perth training alongside Troy Cooley, the team’s bowling coach, in the WACA nets instead of playing for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland from Friday. The move shows he is almost certain to return after being dropped last week for the first time in his Test career.Any hopes the selectors had of giving Johnson, who has not been able to click in two Ashes series, an extended break ended when Doug Bollinger and Peter Siddle struggled for consistency as England reached 5 for 620 declared in Adelaide. At least the selectors know that Johnson can deliver random brutal spells, which is something the side needs after taking only six wickets for 1137 runs in the past two innings.Bollinger’s fitness and effectiveness were below par so he is unlikely to make the squad, while Siddle hasn’t taken a wicket since he broke through with six on the opening day of the series. Ben Hilfenhaus, who will be valuable bowling into the WACA’s Fremantle Doctor breeze, and Johnson are likely to join Harris, who collected 2 for 84 off 29 overs in his third Test.Harris is capable of moving the ball during most stages of the innings and also operates in the 140kphs, but his body will never allow him to take his position for granted. He has a chronic knee injury that gives him constant pain and his latest problem provides another concern. However, Alex Kountouris, Australia’s physiotherapist, said Harris’ shoulder injury was minor. “He was able to bowl during the game unrestricted and scans have cleared him of any significant damage,” Kountouris said.Ricky Ponting met with Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, after the match on Tuesday to discuss the way forward and senior Cricket Australia officials have also been in talks as the hosts attempt to prevent a first Ashes loss at home since 1986-87. The selectors are expected to name a 13-man squad, as they did for the opening two matches, and must decide whether to tinker or deliver wholesale changes. There will be at least one alteration, with Simon Katich’s serious heel injury leaving a spot for either Phillip Hughes or Usman Khawaja. The spin position also needs resolving after Xavier Doherty’s ineffective performances over the first two Tests.Nathan Hauritz is in form with the bat – he scored 146 as a nightwatchman for New South Wales this week – but needs some wickets in the second innings to show he is ready for a recall. Steven Smith, the legspinning allrounder, is another contender and the confusion over the slow bowling ranks will probably earn a reprieve for the No.6 Marcus North, who doubles as the part-time offspinner.Possible squad Shane Watson, Phillip Hughes, Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey, Marcus North, Brad Haddin (wk), Steven Smith, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus.

West Brom linked with Joe Rothwell

West Bromwich Albion are now facing another season in the Championship after failing to maintain a consistent run of promotion-worthy form throughout the current campaign.

With Steve Bruce at the helm and the summer transfer window set to open for business in the coming weeks, it seems as though the Baggies may have identified one man for a potential swoop.

According to journalist Alan Nixon (via Birmingham Mail), the Midlands club are eyeing up a move for Blackburn Rovers midfielder Joe Rothwell.

Since arriving at the Lancashire club in 2018 from Oxford United, the 27-year-old has gone on to make 161 appearances across all competitions. In that time, the midfielder has scored 11 goals and provided 18 assists, showing that he can be effective in front of goal.

According to WhoScored, in addition to having three goals and 10 assists to his name in the current Championship campaign, the Englishman has an overall performance rating of 6.95/10, making him the third-highest rated player in Blackburn’s squad to start more than two league games.

With his current contract at Ewood Park set to expire in the summer, the Baggies could theoretically land Rothwell on a free transfer, as they did with Alex Mowatt during the summer 2021 transfer window.

Rothwell is better than Mowatt

To compare the two midfield maestros, the Blackburn man has recorded more interceptions (48) than Mowatt (35) and has a higher percentage for shots on target. Also, despite playing seven more games than the West Brom midfielder, Rothwell has committed nine fewer fouls than his fellow countryman this season.

This all suggests that he could be a significant upgrade on last summer’s midfield recruit for Bruce’s side if they bring him to the Midlands.

Described by his manager Tony Mowbray as a player who has “Premier League talent”, he could be just what the Baggies need in their side to make a strong push to get back into the top flight in 2023.

With Bruce discussing a possible transfer overhaul at The Hawthorns during the upcoming window, adding Rothwell to their ranks could be a perfect way to start.

Rahane, Pujara in World Cup preliminary squad

Mumbai middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane is the only uncapped player to be included in India’s 30-member World Cup longlist.

This is Ajinkya Rahane’s first call-up to an India squad, even if it is a preliminary list•Associated Press

Mumbai middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane is the only uncapped player to be included in India’s 30-member preliminary World Cup squad. Cheteshwar Pujara, who made a promising half-century on Test debut against Australia, has also been picked, as have opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan, legspinner Piyush Chawla and allrounder Yusuf Pathan. There was, however, no place for Yusuf’s brother Irfan, who has missed the initial stages of the Ranji Trophy with an injury. The list, which will be trimmed to 15 players by January 19, also included three wicketkeepers in addition to MS Dhoni – Parthiv Patel, Dinesh Karthik and Wriddhiman Saha. Karthik used to be India’s first-choice wicketkeeper as a back-up for Dhoni, but he was left out of the recent one-day series against New Zealand, where Saha took over for the first three matches. Parthiv was handed a couple of games as well – when Saha left early as a part of the Test squad for South Africa – and scored two half-centuries, making use of his first chance at the highest level in six years.Yusuf forced his way back into the reckoning when he won the fourth one-dayer against New Zealand with a brutal 123 off 96 balls after India were reduced to 188 for 5 chasing 316. Ravindra Jadeja, who was the preferred all-round option for the majority of last season was also included in the squad. Irfan’s absence from the list, however, highlighted just how far he has fallen in the eyes of India’s selectors. While the one-day side has looked settled in recent times, Dhoni has said a few places are still up for grabs, including one for a fast bowler and another for either an allrounder or a big-hitting lower-order batsman. India have not yet selected their side for the one-day series against South Africa, and with the first game to be played on January 12, the make-up of that squad should be an indication of the composition of the final 15 for the World Cup.Kris Srikkanth, chairman of the selection committee, said it was a team without surprises and expected a strong performance in home conditions. “This is a probables team and everyone selects himself,” Srikkanth said. “There is one more month to go to select the final team and we will sit down and think calmly before finalising the team. They have been doing well in one-day cricket. The World Cup is happening in the subcontinent and I am confident that the team will do well.”Preliminary squad: MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Sreesanth, Munaf Patel, Ishant Sharma, Vinay Kumar, M Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane, Saurabh Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan, Parthiv Patel, R Ashwin, Wriddhiman Saha, Dinesh Karthik, Shikhar Dhawan, Amit Mishra, Piyush Chawla, Cheteshwar Pujara, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar
