Tottenham: Paratici eyes Luka Jovic move

According to Spanish sources, Tottenham Hotspur have entered the mix for Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic as transfer chief Fabio Paratici casts one eye on the summer market.

The Lowdown: Conte rejuvenates Spurs…

Spearheaded by manager Antonio Conte, Tottenham have undergone a real resurgence after a lacklustre start to 2021/22.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Since that 3-0 loss at home to Manchester United in late October, which resulted in the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo, the Lilywhites have clawed their way into top four contention whilst playing some scintillating football.

Conte’s impact at the club has seemingly transformed the mood both inside and outside N17, especially since mid-February, with Tottenham winning a brilliant six out of their last seven Premier League games (Transfermarkt).

However, if chairman Daniel Levy and co wish to keep their hit of a head coach, they may need to back him in the summer market and allow Conte to reinvent the Spurs squad in his own image.

Bearing this in mind, transfer chief Paratici must have one eye on the next transfer window, with news now emerging on a striker target.

The Latest: Tottenham to ‘fight’ for Jovic…

According to Spanish claims, Tottenham are one of the clubs who are set to ‘fight’ for Galacticos outcast Jovic, with his ‘possible departure’ alerting Conte’s side.

The Serbia international is said to be ‘tired’ of life in Madrid and the feeling is mutual on his club’s side as they are ‘looking for the Balkan striker’s exit’.

As a result, according to the report, ‘all roads reach an imminent agreement’ with any interested suitor who can take Jovic off Madrid’s hands – including Tottenham.

The Verdict: Make a move?

As Real Madrid president Florentino Perez seems desperate to sell, with the forward himself also eager to depart, negotiations could move quickly in the summer – but does that mean Spurs should seal his move?

According to a report by AS (via TEAMtalk), the European giants will command a €30m (£25m) transfer fee to let him go, which is arguably in Tottenham’s range if they wish to bolster Conte’s forward options.

Jovic has also been praised by none other than Lionel Messi, who called the 24-year-old ‘magical’, and his 2018/19 performances for his former club Eintracht Frankfurt point to a very capable forward when he’s on form.

He bagged a brilliant 17 goals and five assists over 25 Bundesliga starts in that campaign, with Spurs’ interest arguably justified as a result.

As a backup to star striker Harry Kane, Conte and co could do far worse than Jovic, who is still only 24 years old with many seasons still ahead of him.

Neste período, Júnior Dutra assumiu a titularidade e Danilo virou o reserva imediato.

Leeds: Orta plotting Grillitsch swoop

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Florian Grillitsch to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Mail, who claim that Leeds have joined fellow Premier League sides Arsenal, Newcastle United, West Ham and Everton in the race for the Hoffenheim midfielder – who looks set to become available on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract with the Bundesliga outfit at the end of the season.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

The report goes on to state that the 26-year-old’s representatives have sounded out a number of top-flight teams regarding a potential summer switch, while several unnamed German and Spanish sides are also thought to be keen on a move for the Austria international.

Finally, the Daily Mail claim that Victor Orta has identified the defensive midfielder as a potential replacement for Kalvin Phillips, who has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Bye-bye Phillips

While it is undeniable that losing the services of Phillips this summer would come as a huge blow to Jesse Marsch and his side, should Orta be able to get a deal for Grillitsch over the line as the 26-year-old’s replacement, it would certainly ease the loss of the Whites’ academy graduate.

Indeed, over his 18 Bundesliga appearances this season, the £14.4m-rated midfielder has been imperious in front of the Hoffenheim defence, making an average of 1.6 interceptions, 2.1 tackles, two clearances and winning 4.9 duels – at a success rate of 60% – per game.

Furthermore, the £35k-per-week Austrian has also completed an average of 51.9 passes, 6.6 long balls, 4.2 chipped passes and 0.6 key passes per fixture – demonstrating his quarterback-esque distribution of the ball.

These returns have seen the 26-year-old average a quite spectacular SofaScore match rating of 7.21, not only ranking him as Sebastian Hoeness’ second-best performer in the German top flight but also the joint 17th-best player in the division as a whole.

As such, it will perhaps come as no surprise to learn that Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is a huge fan of the midfielder, with the 34-year-old stating back in 2020:

“Grillitsch is one of the best players in the Bundesliga, and he’s a bit under the radar. He still has a few construction sites, he knows that, I’ve told him that often enough. But he is an exceptional footballer and has an incredible gift for setting the rhythm of the game.”

Indeed, with this description also quite easily being applicable to Phillips, it is not difficult to understand why Orta would be considering a move for Grillitsch to replace the England international this summer, although, a move for the Hoffenheim midfield marshal would all but confirm the £45m-rated man’s departure.

Nottinghamshire suffer nightmare day

Nottinghamshire’s County Championship aspirations took a hammer blow after being bowled out by challengers Yorkshire in their first innings for 59 – their lowest total in 22 years

Nottinghamshire’s County Championship aspirations took a hammer blow after being bowled out by challengers Yorkshire in their first innings for 59 – their lowest total in 22 years. England seamer Ajmal Shahzad picked up the first two wickets on his way to 4 for 21 while Oliver Hannon-Dalby ripped out the tail with 4 for 18 as Nottinghamshire collapsed in just 33.2 overs.Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale then hit an unbeaten 147 not out to deepen their misery as the visitors racked up 260 for 8 in reply, giving them a lead of 201 and putting them right back in the race for their first Championship pennant since 2001.Andre Adams added to his career-best season haul of 58 wickets with 4 for 82 but Nottinghamshire already face a massive challenge to rescue anything from the game and stay ahead of second-placed Somerset. With heavy overnight rain leaving the pitch looking extremely green, it was an easy decision for Gale to insert Nottinghamshire after winning the toss and Trent Bridge once again proved to be a seam bowler’s paradise. Shahzad struck in the opening over as makeshift opener Paul Franks chased a ball outside off and edged to third slip, while Alex Hales also hung his bat out six overs later to offer Adil Rashid an excellent diving catch at fourth slip.Academy bowler Moin Ashraf, making his Championship debut at 18, showed excellent control to claim two notable scalps in removing Adam Voges and Samit Patel in consecutive overs. Hannon-Dalby then had Ali Brown, Chris Read and Steven Mullaney lbw in the space of seven balls either side of lunch, with Shahzad returning to dismiss top-scorer Mark Wagh for 22 and the tail subsiding swiftly.Needing to pick up early wickets to stay in the game, Nottinghamshire instead offered up easy runs, with Darren Pattinson particularly culpable. He was hauled off after three overs for 19 and his replacement Adams struck twice in two balls, Jacques Rudolph and Adam Lyth edging to gully and second slip respectively. But Gale rode his luck in the early stages before punishing width with increasing confidence to post his third century of the season from just 85 balls, slowing down in the final session. He was the only batsman to truly master the conditions all day, dominating a partnership of 111 for the fourth wicket with Jonathan Bairstow (36), who was the third of Adams’ victims, with Franks picking up three and Patel one.

Ponting rues batting lapses

Ricky Ponting has rued his team’s batting lapses in the second innings of each Test which cost Australia the series

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Oct-2010

Ricky Ponting probably batted the best he’s done in India, but there was little support from the rest in the second innings of each Test•AFP

In Mohali, the width of a stump – the one Steven Smith had a shy at and missed – separated Australia from a famous victory. In Bangalore, in front of a passionate crowd that was worth at least half a man to the home side, there was no Heartbreak Hotel room to check into. This was a comprehensive defeat, the manner of it all the more galling after Australia had matched India for three days and more.”It’s probably a little bit harsh, isn’t it?” said Ricky Ponting, when asked about the 2-0 scoreline. “We played very well for the majority of the first Test, and pretty well for the majority of this one. It just goes to show that unless you play five good days of Test cricket – and that’s five, not four or four-and-a-half – you don’t win games.”The first Test was a great example of that. Even this Test here … our inability to break the M Vijay-Sachin Tendulkar partnership on day three was crucial to the outcome of this game. There was also our inability to bat for three sessions in the second innings of a Test match. We needed to bat for one hour longer to put India under some pressure. Then it would have been a really good game of cricket.”Ponting, who has now lost two series as captain in both India and England, fought valiantly for the series-levelling win on the fourth evening, but a classy innings of 72 was cut short when Zaheer Khan once again exhibited his mastery of reverse-swing. “I was really disappointed and down last night to get out when I did,” said Ponting. “I probably played as well yesterday as I ever have in Indian conditions. I did it for three quarters of the day but didn’t get across the line. When you get those starts, you have to capitalise.”Little went right for him when India batted. Virender Sehwag’s poor run in the fourth innings of matches continued, but India found a new hero in Cheteshwar Pujara, who stroked the ball with tremendous fluency and showed great poise on his way to 72 on debut.”I was hoping we’d take some early wickets and I was hoping we’d get Sehwag out early, which we did,” said Ponting. “We knew Sachin was going to be a big wicket for us. I guess the Pujara-Vijay partnership put us a bit behind the eight-ball. They scored at nearly a run a ball and had the momentum going their way. That’s what I spoke to the boys about at lunch. It was about stemming the momentum and slowing the scoreboard down. We got one wicket, but we weren’t good enough to maintain it through the course of the day.”He admitted that Australia were a little surprised to see Pujara stride out in the No. 3 position that Dravid has occupied for so long. “I’m not sure what the reasoning was behind it,” he said. “I’m sure you’ll hear from MS [Dhoni] later on. I imagine it was something to do with him being fresh and not doing much batting in the first innings. I also had a look at Dravid’s record in Bangalore, and it’s not great. Maybe they were trying to be pro-active and send someone out that was willing to keep the scoreboard ticking over at a faster rate, rather than someone who was under a little bit of pressure.”Having nearly made a hash of a similar run-chase in Mohali, India went about things rather differently on this fifth-day pitch, with Pujara’s belligerence the best example of a refusal to get even slightly bogged down. “They seemed to have a bit more intent,” said Ponting. “We were able to get four wickets late that night [in Mohali]. It was a tough little period for them to bat.”That’s the sort of start we needed to have today. It seemed their approach was a bit different. Even Pujara, playing the way he did, showed great intent. He showed he was willing to take a few risks to try and get the momentum going India’s way, and it paid off for him today.”And while there was a lot of criticism of his own tactics, especially the fields set when Nathan Hauritz came on, Ponting admitted that any dreams of parity pretty much disappeared with his frontline spinner conceding 76 in just 12 overs. “Nathan’s disappointed with the way he’s bowled this game,” he said. “Saying that, I thought even our guys yesterday handled the Indian spinners well. It was the reverse-swinging ball late in the day that got them two wickets. There’s no doubt that we have some work to do, on how we bat against reverse-swing bowling and also how we deliver it when we’ve got the ball. Zaheer and Sreesanth, again today, have done that a lot better than us this series.”India now haven’t lost a Test series since Sri Lanka in 2008, but Ponting suggested that any ambitions of replicating the sort of dominance that West Indies and Australia enjoyed for so long would depend entirely on how well they dealt with the changing of the guard. “What I know about the Indian team at the moment is that all their batsmen are very experienced, bar Suresh Raina. When VVS Laxman comes back in, one of Vijay or Pujara’s going to have to go back out.”The greatest challenge they’ll have is how they maintain the standards they’ve set over the last couple of years when some of those guys start to move on. That’s been the biggest challenge for Australian cricket over the last three or four years. When those very experienced and very good players move on, how long does it take for the next crop of young guys to stand up and start playing the way those players did in winning games for their country? It’ll be interesting to see how India cope with that.”

Kamara slammed in Motherwell v Rangers

Andrew Dickson was left slamming Glen Kamara after his part in a goal conceded by Glasgow Rangers in their Scottish Premiership clash at lunchtime.

The Lowdown: Early setback

After going 1-0 up early on at Motherwell, the Ibrox faithful were dealt a setback when Leon Balogun was given a straight red card just before the half-hour mark.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The hosts then equalised through Ross Tierney, before Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team eventually got a grip on the game in the second half.

The Latest: Kamara slammed

Taking to Twitter, Scottish football journalist Dickson slammed Kamara after Tierney’s goal, claiming that it was an ‘all-round shambles’ from him as he put unnecessary pressure on his side:

“That was an all-round shambles from Glen Kamara. Rangers have gone from being very comfortable to on the ropes in five minutes.”

The Verdict: Not his best

That moment from Kamara was certainly not his best in a Light Blues shirt, as he was guilty of dwelling on the ball when he should have really just cleared his lines.

That was one of eight occasions that he gave the ball away cheaply, while he also lost three of his duels, made no clearances and failed to block any shots on his goal (SofaScore).

Lucky for the Finland international, the Teddy Bears won the match anyway, but van Bronckhorst will surely be concerned about his midfield maestro going into their first leg against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Europa League.

Everton loanee Simms scores for Hearts

This forms part of our Loan Watch series, where The Transfer Tavern analyse how one club’s player is doing on loan based on a recent performance.

The Lowdown: January loan

Ellis Simms was sent out on loan to Hearts by Everton in the January transfer window and has since scored six goals in 16 games across all competitions for the Scottish Premiership outfit (Transfermarkt).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It has been reported that Farhad Moshiri is now plotting a ‘major’ overhaul of the squad in the summer, including potentially selling both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, so the majority owner at Goodison Park will now have to decide what to do with Simms once he comes back from his loan spell in Edinburgh.

The Latest: Simms scores

After coming off of the bench in the 72nd minute, Simms ended up scoring the winner for Hearts just 11 minutes later as they beat Dundee United 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in their first game after the late-season Premiership split.

The striker, who also achieved a 100% pass success rate in his short cameo, made an instant impact, and looks to be blossoming into a fine player at just 21 years of age.

The Verdict: Keep him!

If Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison are sold, and Everton find themselves relegated from the Premier League, Frank Lampard’s team must be looking to keep Simms in the senior squad for next season.

The youngster made his plenty of goals already at youth level, so he has already shown his credentials to play more regularly for the club.

Nonetheless, his performances and goals for Hearts are surely giving Moshiri a headache as he weighs up whether to sell Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, which in turn would then potentially open up a pathway for Simms.
