Both teams set for a showpiece final

The two strongest teams at the World Twenty20 have made the final, but the question remains whether England are good enough to end Australia’s winning run at the last hurdle

The two strongest teams at the World Twenty20 have made the final, but the question remains whether England are good enough to end Australia’s winning run at the last hurdle.Michael Clarke’s side have shown they really can win from any position with batting collapses and monumental chases no barrier to the confidence surging through the line-up. England, though, have plenty of belief of their own after producing their most confident cricket in coloured clothes since 1992.It’s a mouthwatering prospect. Just to add spice to the occasion there has, of course, been mention of the A word. It’s still six months until the first Ashes Test in Brisbane, but such is the hyped nature of that duel that this is already being viewed as the start of the countdown. The captains have slightly differing views.”I don’t think you need any extra motivation. This is a World Cup final, no matter who you’re playing against,” Paul Collingwood said. “This is what it’s all about; this is why we play the game of cricket. This is literally the ultimate. You’ve got through to a World Cup final; you’re playing against the old enemy, Australia. It doesn’t get much better than this.”Clarke added that it wouldn’t compensate for losing the Ashes last year but would set the ball rolling nicely for the next contest. “It won’t make up for it, but it would be a fantastic start to what is going to be a great summer back at home,” he said.”I’m certain every Australian and every English person loves seeing that battle. It’s always tough cricket, in any form of the game. I’m certain tomorrow will be no different. So for now, it’s about focusing on a huge game – a final – against a very good team.”Australia have been here before and are veterans of global finals – although not in this format – whereas for England’s it’s their first since 2004 and then it’s right back to 1992 to find the last time they lined up in the final two. On both occasions they came up short, against West Indies’ tailenders at The Oval and Imran Khan’s inspired Pakistan team at the MCG, to add to the runner’s up medal’s of the 1979 and 1987 World Cups. It’s a thin list.Compare that to Australia’s glittering collection which includes a hat-trick of World Cups and the current Champions Trophy title. Victory in this final will make it a full house back at the Cricket Australia offices in Jolimont. When the pressure moments come the experience of being in those situations could prove vital. Australia have seven players with finals experience, while Collingwood is England’s lone survivor from 2004.”The guys who have taken part in big cricket matches – it doesn’t necessarily have to be a final – have a huge advantage,” Clarke said. “There were probably guys in our squad that were picked not only because they are great Twenty20 players but have experience as well – World Cup experience, big Test match experience. Having a few senior players around will help the youngsters control their emotions.”If any of the England players had watched the second semi-final it would have been a daunting experience to see how Australia managed to win. No other team in the world would have chased down those runs against Pakistan from such a position, but England refuse to be intimidated.”We always knew what Australia were capable of,” Collingwood said. “Whoever we played against in the final were going to be a strong side. Nothing surprised us yesterday. All we can concentrate on is our game. There’s plenty of confidence in our side, the way we’ve played throughout this tournament has given us a lot of belief.”We believe we’ve got the skills to beat any side on the day. Australia have always been a very strong side, and they still are. It bodes well for what should be a very, very good final. I don’t really want to harp on too much about Australia, because we’ve always known what they can do. What I want to harp on about is England. We have surprised a few of ourselves in this tournament – and the guys are very, very positive.”Australia arrived in Barbados still buzzing from their incredible run chase in St Lucia. The emotions were so raw after Michael Hussey hit the winning runs that a 48-hour turnaround before the final could have caused problems about bringing the players back down again. However, rather than blank it out and focus purely on this match Clarke wants his squad to bottle the feeling.”I don’t think I want the guys to forget that,” he said. “I think that memory will stick in my mind for the rest of my career. It’s one of the most amazing games of cricket I’ve been involved in.”I think we need to understand and accept that game’s gone. But just keep in the back of your mind that what we showed the other day could happen out here as well. In our minds, we need to be very confident that we’re never out of the game, we always have a chance.”England, themselves, have reached new heights over the last two weeks but are going to have find an even higher level to stop Australia from claiming cricket’s Grand Slam.

Fielding the key for Pakistan – Afridi

Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan captain, has singled out his team’s fielding as the major worry ahead of the semi-final against Australia in St Lucia

Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan captain, has singled out his team’s fielding as the major worry ahead of the semi-final against Australia in St Lucia. Pakistan dropped two catches in the defeat to Australia followed by three more against England in the Super Eights which took them to the brink of elimination, before they fought back against South Africa to keep their semi-final hopes alive.”We are playing well overall but we are missing opportunities by dropping catches. In any format, it is the fielding that wins you the matches,” Afridi said. “The opening partnership is very important and so is the fielding. The first six overs while batting as well as bowling are very important.”Afridi acknowledged Australia had improved significantly in the Twenty20 format, but said his team was confident on a track that has been of assistance to spinners and added he also had plans for Australia’s prolific opening pair of David Warner and Shane Watson. “We have three regular spinners, and Abdur Rehman is bowling very well,” he said. “There are a few areas where Watson and Warner go for the big runs, like midwicket and mid-on, and we’ve made plans against them as to where to bowl.”When asked whether Hammad Azam, the allrounder who is yet to get an international break, would play against Australia, Afridi said it was unlikely. “Azam is young, and he’s played some of the practice matches. He’s not very confident now, but we hope that if he tours more he can develop into a mature cricketer.”There has been no international cricket in Pakistan since the Lahore attacks in March last year, and Afridi said victory in the tournament would be a massive boost for fans back home. He also called on India and Sri Lanka to come to Pakistan’s support in these trying times, and reciprocate for Pakistan touring their countries when the situation there, as Afridi believed, was “not very good.””We are here to play good cricket and win this competition because there’s no cricket in Pakistan,” Afridi said. “The situation in India was not very good around five to six years ago and Pakistan played there as well as in Sri Lanka. Pakistan was the only team to play there. This is how we should continue our cricketing relationship.”

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Dele links

Crystal Palace and Everton are both keen to sign Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli before tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline.

That’s according to sources close to talkSPORT, and as to be expected, a number of Eagles fans were quick in flocking to the news on social media.

Patrick Vieira is yet to add to his first-team squad this month and is running out of time to do so. It looked as if Palace would land Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek on a temporary deal, but he now looks set to join Everton.

The Toffees and the Eagles now look set to do battle once again, with Everton keen on a permanent move for Alli, whereas Palace are eyeing a loan deal. The 37-cap England international seems surplus to requirements under Antonio Conte in north London, featuring just three times under the Italian in the Premier League.

Palace fans react

@CPFCtransfersHQ relayed talkSPORT’s claim regarding Alli on Twitter. Here is what these Palace fans had to say in reply, with many not keen to see the 25-year-old at Selhurst Park given the rapid decline in his fortunes on the other side of the capital.

Pensando sempre no Cruzeiro – afirmou o jogador.

Windies save face in high-scoring draw

Playing out the final day was more of a formality for South Africa as the second Test ended in a high-scoring draw, confirming what many would have feared five days ago on taking a look at a road of a pitch at Warner Park

Playing out the final day was more of a formality for South Africa as the second Test ended in a high-scoring draw, confirming what many would have feared five days ago on taking a look at a road of a pitch at Warner Park. The surface hadn’t deteriorated enough over four days to give the bowlers any sort of advantage, so it would have been ridiculous to expect at least ten wickets going down to constitute a result.South Africa had all ten wickets in hand this morning when they took guard, and predictably went through the motions, with the aim of getting extra batting practice ahead of the final Test. It was, in other words, more of a televised nets session, with both teams resigned to the conclusion that no result was possible. The pitch was a poor advertisement for Test cricket, and the last two days in particular were completely overshadowed by other world sporting events viewers would have turned to – one in London and the other in South Africa.Despite the result, or the lack of it, West Indies had more to gain. Their batting was a shambles in Trinidad and perhaps a flat wicket here in St Kitts was the best thing for them to get their confidence back. In overhauling South Africa’s 543, they gained a moral victory, though the manner in which they got there was a topic of debate. The sudden shift of tactics from urgency to obduracy was questionable, but at least they ensured they wouldn’t lose. In their defense though, run-scoring on the fourth day wasn’t the easiest, with the left-arm spinner persisting with an over the wicket line to the right-handers.South Africa lost just three wickets till the final hour after tea, when the captains expectedly decided to call it off. But the extended morning session – to make up for lost time due to rain yesterday – wasn’t boring or lacking in action. Shane Shillingford got the ball to turn and bounce, there was a dropped catch, couple of confident appeals and a referral which was turned down. The batsmen weren’t too cautious either and weren’t afraid to reach out to the ball, even if the strokes weren’t convincing.Graeme Smith looked solid during his 46. He was positive against the spinners as well, rocking back to cut if it was slightly short. In one over, he chipped down the track to Shillingford and lofted it crisply over long-on and then leant forward to crunch one past covers. But Shillingford hit back by getting one to turn from middle and induced a thick edge from Smith, trying to cut.Smith’s opening partner, Alviro Petersen, was watchful and looked in control. He had a slip, silly point and silly mid-off but successfully negotiated the spinners, even reverse sweeping them. Hashim Amla, however, didn’t look so assured. There was a puff of dust when Shillingford landed it on the rough outside off and Amla was circumspect against the turn and bounce.Amla ought to have been dismissed on 21 when Bravo fluffed a sitter at slip, off Sulieman Benn. He managed five convincing boundaries against the spinners on both sides of the wicket, but perished to the impressive Shillingford, tucking it to backward short leg. Dwayne Bravo then ended the session in style by flattening Petersen’s off stump with a yorker. No wickets fell in the post-lunch session as the Test meandered towards a predictable draw. Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers went through the motions and built a steady partnership which extended to 104.Kallis began the second session in style with a couple of straight-driven boundaries off Shillingford. The offspinner, who took two wickets in the opening session, changed his line of attack to round the wicket to the right-handers as a very defensive option. The South Africans gave no chances, save for a run-out attempt at de Villiers – Roach’s throw from square leg missed the stumps at the bowler’s end. Kallis was solid as ever against the seamers, driving Bravo off the front foot and also pulling him for a powerful six. He reached his fifty with a clip to the on side just before the tea break.South Africa declared an hour after the tea break and the relief was palpable at the early finish to the game. The best the players can hope for is a sporting track at the Kensington Oval for the deciding Test.

Tottenham Hotspur: talkSPORT’s Alex Crook slams Daniel Levy

Tottenham missed out on signing Adama Traore and Luis Diaz because chairman Daniel Levy felt he would be able to strike a cut-price deal for both wingers late in the window, according to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook (via Give Me Sport).

The Lowdown: Lacklustre transfer window

After Antonio Conte made it known that he wanted to bring former Wolves powerhouse Traore to north London, Fabio Paratici and Levy undertook lengthy negotiations with the West Midlands club.

As per The Athletic, Wolves rejected a bid of £15million from Spurs a few weeks into the window. It was said that the asking price was around £20million, so it was expected that an agreement would be made soon after.

However, La Liga giants Barcelona made an approach at the last minute, throwing the 26-year-old’s move to Tottenham in the air. The Spain international decided to reject the Premier League club and returned to the Nou Camp on a loan deal with a £30million option to make the transfer permanent.

Spurs were also set to sign Porto winger Luis Diaz, and were willing to pay up to £46million to secure the 25-year-old’s services. However, Liverpool swooped in at the last minute, and the Colombian opted to join the Merseyside club.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: ‘Classic Levy’

Crook believes Levy’s insistence on leaving deals until the end of the window proved his side costly.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, he said: “It was classic Levy trying to get players over the line in the last few days of a transfer window because you think you’re going to save a couple of quid.

“Ultimately, it cost them with Traore because I think if they had just come in earlier in the window and paid £20million, that probably would have happened.

“Maybe they should have been looking at getting a deal done for Diaz a lot earlier in the window as well.”

The Verdict: Mistakes made

Tottenham made just two signings during January, and supporting Crook’s theory, they both signed on deadline day.

Conte was keen to sign the Spaniard from Wolves and convert him into a right wing-back, which the player did not seem too thrilled about, instead opting for a more advanced role in Catalonia. However, if Crook is correct, Traore would more than likely be a Tottenham player if the Lilywhites had just bit the bullet and met the asking price.

Levy did come close to securing Diaz from Porto, as there was confidence from both sides that a deal could be reached. However, this was before Liverpool reignited their interest, and the Colombia international chose Jurgen Klopp’s side instead. With that in mind, the criticism seems slightly harsh in the case of the former Porto star.
