West Ham United are currently suffering an injury crisis amongst their backline, with six defenders currently sidelined, four of which are full-backs.

David Moyes will surely be looking to add reinforcements in January, and a move for Everton left-back Lucas Digne could prove a clever move.

What’s the story?

According to the Telegraph, French full-back Lucas Digne faces an uncertain future at Goodison Park with the suggestion that the 28-year-old and manager Rafa Benitez have fallen out.

The Mirror reported this week that there was a further breakdown in Benitez’s relationship with the left-back after the 28-year-old pulled out of the squad for Thursday’s game against Chelsea with sickness.

If the reports of a fall out are true and that Digne could therefore be forced out of the Merseyside club in January, certain Premier League clubs should be keeping tabs on the situation and West Ham are one of them.

West Ham should make a move for Digne

With West Ham still competing in four competitions, Moyes is going to need to add depth to his squad if they are to juggle all four successfully, particularly the Premier League and Europa League.

Full-back is an area that has particularly suffered of late with Aaron Cresswell, Ben Johnson and Ryan Fredericks all injured whilst Vladimir Coufal faces suspension after being sent off against Arsenal.

In particular, left-back Cresswell has been at West Ham for six-and-a-half years and is now 32 years of age with no obvious long-term suitor to replace the Englishman.

Digne is 28 and possesses plenty of Premier League experience having been with the Toffees since 2018 when he joined from Barcelona, making him a suitable candidate to replace Cresswell for the long term, particularly if the Hammers are serious about making a push for European qualification every season.

Rated £31.5m by Transfermarkt, the left-back won’t come cheap but the West Ham hierarchy could take advantage of a difficult situation at Everton and swoop for the French defender.

Yuvraj had picked up the injury while fielding during the second Twenty20 in Mohali and was subsequently unavailable for the first two ODIs.He has been advised rest for the next two matches of the ODI series after aggravating the worrisome finger and his participation in the forthcoming tri-series in Bangladesh remains in doubt. Yuvraj returned to the starting XI for the third ODI in Cuttack yesterday and scored 23 from 40 balls as India took a 2-1 lead in the five-match contest.This is the second serious injury he has sustained this year. In September, Yuvraj fractured a finger during a practice session in Johannesburg before India’s Champions Trophy got underway. He recovered ahead of the six-week timeline doctors had estimated and played five of seven ODIs against Australia at home before Sri Lanka arrived.Yuvraj could be replaced by batsman Rohit Sharma, who last week boosted his chances of a national recall with a triple-century for Mumbai against Gujarat during the Ranji Trophy.The Indian selectors are expected to make an announcement shortly. As speculation grows over whether Makhaya Ntini’s future lies with a county in England, the South African fast bowler has said he believed his Test career was not finished.”I believe I have more Test cricket ahead of me,” Ntini said. “I am going to concentrate on getting back into the Test team.” A spokesperson for the fast bowler also told SAPA that Ntini had not signed a Kolpak contract.Ntini, the first black cricketer to play for his country, was dropped for the ongoing Cape Town Test against England and there were reports linking him to Middlesex, a move that would have effectively ended his national prospects.Ntini celebrated his 100th Test appearance in the first match of the series against England at Centurion. However, he took only 2 for 119 and his retention for the Durban Test at Friedel de Wet’s expense was criticised. Ntini went wicketless at Kingsmead and was axed for the third Test.

واستمر: “لكن تخيل تولي المسؤولية بعد فوزهم بثلاث بطولات دوري أبطال أوروبا على التوالي أو ثلاث بطولات دوري إنجليزي، الضغط ربما يكون أقل الآن لأنهم لم يتأهلوا لدوري الأبطال الموسم الماضي”.

Tão certo que ele chegou antes do que previra. Não havia nenhum companheiro na Arena no momento.

– Eu me ajoelhei mesmo no hotel, que eu sempre oro… E pedi nas minhas orações, preces, para dar tudo certo e deu. Cheguei até antes da equipe no vestiário. E para mim foi muito legal, poder estar contribuindo, com uma palavra, ajuda… Ali com o Caíque (França, goleiro que o substituiu). Sabia que seria bem difícil poder jogar, pelo cansaço, a viagem, mas foi muito legal que deu tudo certo e que não deu atraso. O pessoal da Seleção ainda ficou me assustando, porque a empresa que eu vinha tinha costume de atrasar, mas deu tudo certo, foi um bom voo – contou Cássio, em entrevista ao LANCE!, no dia seguinte à confirmação do título com vitória por 3 a 1 sobre o Fluminense.

O goleiro deixou Londres, onde ficou no banco no amistoso contra a Inglaterra, na madrugada de terça para quarta, horário de Brasília, e desembarcou no Aeroporto Internacional de Guarulhos por volta das 18h45 de quarta, poucas horas antes do jogo. Portanto, não havia espaço para atrasos e isso levou o goleiro a tomar certos cuidados.

– Se desse atraso de meia hora, uma hora, até sair do avião, ia dar ruim. Então não despachei nada, levei tudo na parte de cima. Já tinha duas pessoas me esperando no aeroporto, seguranças, prontamente para me levar direto para a Arena – relatou Cássio.

A longa viagem desgastou o goleiro, que admitiu: não tinha condições físicas de jogar a partida.

– O voo foi confortável, consegui dormir um pouco, mas é que eu cheguei do jogo da Seleção, passamos no hotel por volta de 3h, nosso voo era mais ou menos umas 6h para Lisboa, e não dormi. Chegou na segunda parte eu acabei dormindo um pouco. Dormi, estava um pouco ansioso por causa do jogo, mas no final deu tudo certo. Ontem eu já estava meio grogue, talvez pelo fuso-horário, zonzo, meio perdido, mas hoje está bem melhor – disse.

Cássio ficou no banco de reservas e já no aquecimento pôde sentir o calor da Fiel. A torcida começou a gritar seu nome antes do jogo, e ele retribuiu com acenos.

– É legal, eu estava com saudade para falar a verdade, a gente está distante da torcida, mas naquele momento ali eles sempre estão apoiando, foi bem bacana, não só agora. A intimidade com a torcida é muito legal, a gente fica muito satisfeito, porque isso nos ajuda muito a ser melhor, porque a torcida do Corinthians faz coisas inexplicáveis – exaltou o goleiro.

Com o seu segundo Campeonato Brasileiro, Cássio chegou a sete títulos pelo Corinthians. É o goleiro mais vitorioso da história do clube. Journalist Ben Wild has suggested that the Colombian may attempt to make a move south of the border in the January transfer window.

He told Football Insider, via This is Futbol: “Money talks at Rangers. And we know about their financial problems, we’ve covered Rangers pretty extensively here at Football Insider and they posted significant losses for the past 12 months – as a lot of clubs did, to be fair.

“So I think the money will be there. We know Morelos has been angling for a Premier League move for a while. He’d done an interview, hadn’t he, and said ‘I want to play in the Premier League’, so maybe he could try and force something through if the bid came in.”

Fans will be fuming

Rangers fans will surely be fuming with this claim as it suggests that Morelos is prepared to fight for a transfer to be completed next month. Having their top scorer demand a move midway through the season would be a major blow for the Gers, which is why supporters will be frustrated with these comments.

There is no shying away from how important Morelos is to the team. The 25-year-old has chipped in with eight goals and four assists in the Premiership this term, along with two goals in four starts in the group stages of the Europa League.

He has scored 107 goals in 211 games overall in his Rangers career, including 62 goals in 127 Premiership matches for the club. This shows that he is a proven goalscorer at this level and selling him would be a huge blow to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad.

Former Finland international Aki Riihilahti previously lauded the attacker. He told The Athletic: “You could see he was a fighter. He was never shocked by anything, he just adapted. It was immediately obvious that he was way more talented and was a unique player in that even if he was having an off game, he was still dangerous. He was brutally ruthless.”

These comments highlight both Morelos’ ability and mentality as a player, with the bulldozer putting the work in on the pitch as a ‘fighter’. This is another reason why fans will surely be fuming to see him leave, as he is someone who can provide quality and work rate for the Gers.

This suggests that there is scope for Gio van Bronckhorst to add a new signing in that area of the pitch, as they have struggled to find a consistent performer in terms of end product. Fans could get excited by the potential of a forward coming in as they are players who are capable of getting supporters off their seats with pieces of trickery and quality in the final third, resulting in goals and assists.

Therefore, supporters will love this claim in terms of what it means for Sands, the right-back situation and the prospect of an attacking addition to provide excitement on the wing. However, it is now down to van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson to identify the right targets and get quality deals over the line.
