Aston Villa must sign Liverpool star Joe Gomez

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard could land a dream centre-back signing in Liverpool star Joe Gomez.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days and weeks have suggested that the Midlands side have got their sights set on the Reds defender, and now, The Express and Star’s Luke Hatfield has delivered his verdict on the potential signing.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: “Oh yeah, for sure. He’s a quality player, obviously an England international pre-injury. He would be a fantastic signing for Villa.”

Jurgen Klopp’s a big fan

While Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa have been Villa’s established centre-back partnership for the past couple of seasons now in the Premier League, the former has seen his form go up and down, and was even dropped by former manager Dean Smith earlier this campaign.

In Gomez, not only would Villa be signing someone who at 24-years-old still has the prime years of his career ahead of him, but someone who has been playing at the very highest level for a number of years now at Anfield.

He was a key part of the squad that helped Liverpool lift the Champions League trophy in the 2018/2019 campaign, before following it up with a Premier League title a year later – that was a season that saw him emerge as the Reds’ dominant centre-back following Virgil van Dijk’s injury, playing 28 times in the top-flight.

It’s no surprise then that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has previously waxed lyrical about him, and the unique combination of pace and power he has as a centre-back.

He said: “Since he is playing as a centre-half again – his natural position – together with (Virgil van Dijk) there is exceptional. He is a sensational footballer, which is good.

“He has outstanding speed, which helps us a lot to keep our last line high; he is a really good challenger; good in one-on-one situations; football-wise, I said already, good. The package is really nice.”

The £27m-rated star could bring proven quality to the Villa back-line so has to be signed over the winter months.

With his experience at the elite level in mind, he’d surely be a dream deal for Johan Lange and co as Gerrard’s revolution is kickstarted in the market. The fact he’s hand-picked from the new manager’s former club also makes it a very attractive deal – there is no club he knows more about than Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Villa are eyeing this European star…

Ricky Ponting compares 'special' win to World Cup

Ricky Ponting has said that his inexperienced and under-strength side’s victory in India was among the best one-day successes he has been part of, including the Champions Trophy and the World Cup wins. Australia clinched the seven-match series after winning the sixth ODI in Guwahati by six wickets, a result that gave them a 4-2 lead with one game in hand.”It’s probably one of the best one-day series I have ever been involved in, what with all the injuries and setbacks at the start of this tour,” Ponting said. “We have won a lot of series here in India but this one will be up there with some of the specials that I played in, including our Champions Trophy and World Cup wins. For the boys to stick together as a group and play as team of 11 players for the last few games has been very satisfying.”India is a hard place to come and win and this victory means a lot, especially when you haven’t got all your players to pick from. It makes it even harder when players are getting off planes and turning up and playing. No one’s shirking and no one’s whining, we have just got on with it and tried to do the best that we could.”Australia’s campaign in India was ravaged by injury even before it started with four first-choice players – Nathan Bracken, Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin and Callum Ferguson – unavailable for selection. Their troubles grew more severe during the tour as Brett Lee, James Hopes, Tim Paine, Peter Siddle and Moises Henriques also picked up injuries and had to be flown home. Before the fifth ODI in Hyderabad, Australia had only 13 fit players to choose a XI from and Ponting said the way they responded to adversity was heartening for the future.”With each game that we have played, we have just gotten better and better so it’s really good signs for the team,” he said. “Some of the younger guys have come into the team and have got a few games under their belt. They have been building experience towards the World Cup in 2011 and I think they will have learnt a lot from this tour.”The victory in Guwahati was Australia’s third consecutive win in the series, following successes in Mohali and Hyderabad. Fast bowler Doug Bollinger, who took his second five-for in ODIs, and Mitchell Johnson reduced India to 27 for 5, effectively ending the contest in the first hour. “The bowlers obviously led the way today, Johnson and Bollinger were outstanding upfront. The way they started after second ball of the day went for six was really remarkable,” Ponting said. “He [Bollinger] bowled brilliantly, starting from his first game back in Delhi. To get five wickets on a pitch which did not offer much to the fast bowlers is a terrific reward. Once we got those four or five wickets we were always in control of the game.”Ponting also praised Australia’s fielding, which he felt made the difference during the close finishes in Vadodara and Hyderabad. “We talk about it a lot around our team and pride ourselves on the way we field. Quite often in close games it’s the fielding which is the difference between the teams. We’ve had a four-run win [in Vadodara] and a three-run win [in Hyderabad] in this series and some of the great fielding that we have had in this series has gone a long way in helping us win.”

Lee desperate for quick recovery

Brett Lee has set his sights on playing in the first Test against West Indies despite being sent home from India with an elbow injury. Lee has had ankle and side problems before the latest setback, but he intends to fight for his spot.”I will be doing everything I possibly can to make sure I’m back on the cricket field ASAP,” Lee said after arriving back in Sydney. “I still enjoy my cricket and I still think the way that I’ve been bowling, I’ve been really happy with my personal form. I have to make sure I stay nice and fit.”Now 32, Lee must edge ahead of Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus and Stuart Clark to add to his 76 Tests. Tim Nielsen, the Australia coach, said Lee was sent home to give him the best chance of recovering.”It is not a case of writing him off at all,” Nielsen said in the Sunday Mail. “We are just being careful and prudent. It is only three weeks before the first Test so we want to get to the source of the problem the best way we can and get the best diagnosis.”Lee hurt himself in the opening ODI against India last Sunday after bowling six overs. He insisted the problem was not related to his appearances in the Champions League Twenty20, and he is not the only player with a recent heavy workload. Australia have been hit by a series of injuries since the Ashes tour and have less than a month before the Test series against West Indies begins in Brisbane on November 26.

WBA: Ismael faces blow to transfer plans

It is no secret that West Brom have every intention of taking advantage of the upcoming January transfer window, but there is now one reported target that the Baggies have been speculated to sign who could be off the cards, after Dwight Gayle’s new manager Eddie Howe spoke out about the player this week.

What’s the story?

The Newcastle United striker has been said to have “an important role” at the club according to Howe, which will likely flatten the chances of Valerien Ismael being able to tempt the 32-year-old away from Tyneside.

The Magpies boss spoke to Chronicle Live about Gayle’s future with the club, saying: “What I have seen is someone who can certainly score goals, is a brilliant finisher. So Dwight will have an important role.

“He’s very well respected by the group and a well-liked member of the team. I’m going to enjoy working with him, for sure.”

These kind of numbers are exactly what West Brom are looking to add to their side as they head into the second half of the season, as they have struggled to score and finish their many chances over the last few months in the Championship, leading to a seven-point gap from table toppers Fulham currently.

These comments from Howe come after Albion continue to be heavily linked with securing the signature of the £40k-p/w striker, who proved to be a prolific scorer in the Championship during the 2016/17 season, when he scored 23 goals and claimed four assists in just 34 appearances for Newcastle.

What are WBA’s chances of getting Gayle?

West Brom fans could be gutted to hear that Dwight Gayle may not make a return to the club, as many have taken to social media to discuss the highly-speculated move.

When The Baggies Podcast asked on Twitter if fans would like to see Gayle back at The Hawthorns, the response was unanimously positive. One fan replied; “Yep, don’t even have to think about it! Natural poacher who can’t get a game at Newcastle. Bring him home!!”

However, with Howe’s comments suggesting that he still sees the striker as an integral part of the squad on Tyneside, those Baggies fans wanting Gayle back in the Midlands could be left gutted as their hopes of a reunion appear dashed.

Despite the Magpies manager’s verdict on the 32-year-old, though, there is every chance that Newcastle could sign another striker in the January transfer window, thanks to their mega-money takeover.

Gayle doesn’t get much game-time for the Magpies, as Callum Wilson continues to thrive in the centre-forward role for the club, meaning that the temptation to get regular first team football with West Brom could actually be a way for Ismael to secure the 32-year-old’s signature in January.

Either way, the Baggies must find a reliable striker in the upcoming transfer window if Albion want to catch up with Bournemouth and Fulham to secure automatic promotion back into the Premier League next season.

Everton fans slam Rafa over Richarlison

Many Everton fans have questioned Rafael Benitez’s comments regarding an injury suffered by Richarlison following the Toffees’ recent defeat to Crystal Palace.

The Merseysiders suffered an emphatic 3-1 defeat on Sunday following a poor performance at Selhurst Park. Captain Séamus Coleman was criticised by BBC pundit Garth Crooks over an error which ultimately led to a stunning last-minute goal from Conor Gallagher.

At the other end of the field, Everton failed to create many chances in the final third, as lone striker Richarlison did not register a single shot whilst he was on the pitch. The Brazilian was subsequently subbed off in the 58th minute and did not withhold his displeasure over the decision.

However, Benitez’s post-match comments regarding the substitution have caused some controversy amongst Toffees fans.

Fans question Benitez’s comments

Everton’s official Twitter channel shared a quote from Benitez’s post-match comments, where he said: “Allan has a little problem with his adductor. It is the same case for Richarlison, who had a calf problem.”

However, lots of Toffees fans have flocked to the replies to question the truth behind the manager’s statement, which many believed to be a lie.

Here’s a selection of responses from disgruntled supporters to the under-fire Spaniard:

“Richarlison clearly questioned why he was brought off, what player does that if they know they’re injured? Allan and Digne have stood up to Rafa and he doesn’t like it. Why the players don’t ignore his instructions and play the way they need to is beyond me.”

“Why did Richy shake his head then when his number went up on the board”

“Don’t lie to us, have the conviction to stand by your decision. Maybe even give the fans some credit and explain why you thought that was the best thing to do.”

“Ok, saying that was the problem. Which it isn’t. Don’t they normally start treating an injury immediately, to ensure it doesn’t get any worse rather than let him just sit on the bench? Now, I’m neither a medic or a detective but even I’m smelling…”

“Judging by Richarlison’s reaction on the pitch with the whole world watching I’m going to hazard a guess and say that Benitez is telling lies. AGAIN”

Luiz Gomes: 'Revelando talentos'

Urgent Kallis turns to oxygen aid

Jacques Kallis is using an oxygen chamber to try and speed his recovery from the fractured rib that has threatened his participation in the opening Test against England at Centurion Park.Kallis suffered the injury during the Champions League Twenty20 in October and was ruled out of the recent one-day series. It is a race against time to get him fit for the opening five-day encounter, with some suggestions that he may struggle to make the starting XI in any capacity or be unable to bowl during the four-match series. However, South Africa coach Mickey Arthur was not ruling out one of his key players and was still holding onto hope that he can play a part with the ball. He echoed Mike Proctor’s view after the convenor of selectors said Kallis was 50-50 to appear at Centurion Park, although Arthur was more positive about Kallis’ prospects as a batsman.”We certainly haven’t ruled him out of bowling during the series and we are still working hard with him ahead of the first Test,” Arthur told Cricinfo. “He has been using an oxygen chamber to try and speed the recovery and is doing extensive rehab every day.”At the moment the best-case scenario is that he bats and bowls at Centurion which is probably 50-50, the next best is that he just bats which is probably around 60-40 and the worst case scenario is that he is only fit for Durban.”Kallis would not be the first player to use oxygen therapy to aid recovery from injury. Simon Jones underwent similar treatment in 2005 when he was trying to be fit for the final Ashes Test although the process was ultimately unsuccessful for him. The benefit of the chambers is that they can supply 100% pure oxygen which helps the body fight injury compared with the normal air which contains only about 20% oxygen.Kallis played in the second Twenty20 international against England before the extent of the rib injury was confirmed. He will be fully assessed when the South African squad meets up in Potchefstroom on Friday for a three-day training camp. “Our priority was the Test series which is why he was pulled from the one-dayers so he didn’t do further damage,” Arthur said. “We will have a far better idea of where we stand on Sunday.”Arthur also confirmed that Dale Steyn was progressing well after his hamstring injury and that the paceman bowled six overs in the nets on Wednesday. Steyn was ruled out of the final two ODIs but now looks set to lead the pace attack alongside Makhaya Ntini, who will reach 100 caps, and probably Morne Morkel.
