A method to Sri Lanka's uniqueness

Sri Lanka don’t have the madness of a Pakistan that needs method brought to it, but there has always been to their cricket, a spontaneity and uniqueness, an element of the uncontrolled

Kumar Sangakkara doesn’t mind the underdog tag going into the tournament opener•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Kumar Sangakkara doesn’t strike you as the kind of man who leaves much to chance. In most things he does, there is method. Even his batting, pretty as some of it is, is thoughtfully constructed, bit by bit, run by run. He is neither flashy nor a grinder, but instead an accumulator, working on solid percentages. He speaks publicly as he bats: articulate, well-planned, polished, safe, mostly platitudes, very occasionally spicy. If that’s your kind of thing and cricket is a brand, then he is its spokesperson.Sri Lanka don’t have the madness of a Pakistan that needs method brought to it, but there has always been to their cricket, a spontaneity and uniqueness, an element of the unplanned or untrained. Sangakkara, a worldly character, less than a year into a role he seems like he has been doing all his life or at least preparing for, is trying something. The sense is that he is trying to bring different worlds into Sri Lanka’s game; maybe the preparedness of teams such as Australia and South Africa, or their ruthlessness and focus. If nothing else, he is bringing their new world jargon and thought. When asked about his side’s ODI form going into the Champions Trophy opener against the hosts and the world’s top side, Sangakkara spoke of processes and journeys. “Every game we play, every tournament we go into, we are building towards a goal and this is another step in that journey,” Sangakkara said. “This is a very important tournament and we’re trying to win it but for that you’ve got to get the processes right in training and the meeting room and we’ve gone a long way towards doing that.” A double take revealed that neither Greg Chappell nor Rahul Dravid were at the mic.Yet imagine how frightening a prospect Sri Lanka could be, if their talent absorbed the ethos of an Australian side? True it might come at the cost of something indigenous – all globalisation’s collateral damage – but hopefully not so much to make it unrecognisable. Nobody, after all, wants to see the core of a Malinga or Mendis or Muralitharan diluted. As it is their side is bursting with enough talent to loan out to England, West Indies and an associate or ten. After years of spin, they have a substantial pace attack, in which many bases are covered. They’ve got form player in world cricket at the moment, in Tillakaratne Dilshan. Angelo Mathews may look ordinary but keeps doing things that arenot so, and the old hands of Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene and thecaptain himself are around, steadying things up. Farveez Maharoof and Dilhara Fernando are so last season (and not here) and they always do without the world’s smoothest wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene in their ODI side.Throw in the world’s best spinner, one of the world’s most promising spinners, an ark-full of part-time bowling options and the subcontinent’s best fielders and how surprised would you really be if they won, not just tomorrow, but the whole shebang?Sangakkara downplayed the prospects, claiming Sri Lanka were the underdogs for the opener. “A game’s a game and it doesn’t matter who the opposition is. But it’s nice, because we’ve come here as underdogs in this game and they (South Africa) have got a major tournament to start, to kick off in front of their fans and the pressure is really on them. We’ve just got to go and face the challenges, stay low on the radar, let everyone else and the fans concentrate on South Africa. We know they are a good side but we’ve beaten them in a World Cup before, in South Africa as well.”Clever, smart; of course he would downplay his side, for he is too knowing not to. In this light, mixed results in the warm-up games might also be part of some elaborate bit of kidology. Don’t be fooled. Sangakkara knows what he is doing and where he is going. So too does his team.

Hatfield drops Villa January transfer claim

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is set to receive significant backing in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to the Express & Star’s Luke Hatfield, with the journalist claiming in a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT that he expects Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens to provide the 41-year-old manager with substantial funds to invest in his playing squad at Villa Park this winter.

Speaking about Aston Villa’s potential January transfer business, Hatfield said: “He’ll get serious backing, Gerrard will. Villa’s owners don’t mess around in terms of transfer funds.”

Music to the ears of fans

Considering the fact that Aston Villa have already spent a rather substantial £89.84m on incoming transfers this season, there may well have been concerns amongst the Villa Park fanbase that Gerrard could be somewhat restricted with his budget in the winter market.

However, with the second city side still actually £24.46m in profit from their summer transfer business, something that is largely down to the £105.75m sale of Jack Grealish, there would indeed appear to be plenty in the bank for the former Liverpool captain to play with in January.

Furthermore, with Sawiris ranking fifth on a recent list of the Premier League’s most wealthy owners, with the Egyptian boasting a net worth of a whopping £5.3bn, should Gerrard feel it is necessary, it would also appear easy enough for the 41-year-old manager to go knocking on the owner’s door with his cap in hand for extra transfer funds, as Hatfield suggests.

So, while Villa are by no means home and dry in terms of Premier League survival just yet – with the club currently sitting in 15th place, four points above the relegation zone – the news that Gerrard looks set to receive something of a war chest this winter is sure to come as music to the ears of fans.

If they can secure the signings of a number of his targets, it would seem unlikely that Villa will be languishing in the bottom half of the table for much longer.

Run-out recall 'an easy decision'

The Spirit of Cricket was called into play once again in the Champions Trophy when Daniel Vettori was left to decide the fate of Paul Collingwood who had been ruled run out after venturing out of his crease

The Spirit of Cricket occupied centre-stage at the Champions Trophy once again, and after sparing Paul Collingwood, who had been declared run out after wandering out of his crease, Daniel Vettori said it was an easy decision to make.Andrew Strauss had made a similar decision in England’s opening match against Sri Lanka by recalling Angelo Mathews, who had been stranded after a mid-pitch collision with Graham Onions, and Strauss praised Vettori’s decision, which he described as the right one.Vettori’s gesture was more significant for two reasons. There was no case of obstruction in this instance, and Collingwood had no one to blame but himself for venturing out his crease. Secondly, it was a do-or-die match for New Zealand.”It was a tough decision to make as a captain when your future in the tournament is on the line,” Strauss said. “New Zealand were well within their rights to appeal. Obviously Colly was not going for a run, but he was hasty in leaving the crease.”It was an ironic turn of events since Collingwood was captaining England when New Zealand’s Grant Elliott had been run out after a mid-pitch collision with Ryan Sidebottom at The Oval last year. The umpires were obliged to rule him out, but Collingwood’s refusal to withdraw the appeal had infuriated Vettori and invited widespread criticism from the media. The incident took place in the 11th over with England struggling at 27 for 3 on a bouncy pitch at the Wanderers. Collingwood had just survived a snorter from Kyle Mills, which flew off a length and whizzed past the batsman’s nose on its way to Brendon McCullum. It was the last ball of the over and Collingwood, taking it for granted that over had been called, had begun walking down the pitch. McCullum, always alert to such situations, under-armed the ball in a flash and the New Zealanders appealed.Asad Rauf, the square-leg umpire, was already walking in and looking down, so he referred the decision to Aleem Dar, his colleague in the box. Confusion reigned as the umpire at the bowler’s end, Daryl Harper, put his arm around Rauf’s shoulders and took him away for a chat.”It was one of those situations when we had a little time to think about it,” Vettori said. “When it went to the third umpire, I deliberated with my team-mates, and the umpires. It was obvious that there was no intention of a run, Colly had wandered down the pitch, and it was a lot easier to call him back and get on with the game.”According to the laws of the game, it was probably out, but of late we have discussed a lot about the spirit of the game.”Both the captains were of the opinion that Spirit of Cricket was becoming an issue cricketers were concerned with. “It’s catching on,” Strauss said.”I think no one wants to come to a press conference and answer those tough questions,” Vettori said, in jest at first. Turning serious, he added: “I think it is in the forefront on the lot of people’s mind.”But Strauss found himself fronting up to questions about the spirit of the game after a visibly cramping Graeme Smith was disallowed a runner at SuperSport Park during his valiant 141. As it turned out, Strauss shouldn’t have had to defend himself because the matter had been long taken out of the fielding captain’s hands, and the call had been made by the umpires on the field. In another all-too-similar incident back in December 2006, a Muttiah Muralitharan dismissal during the first Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Christchurch was also the subject of controversy.Kumar Sangakkara had whipped a Shane Bond delivery down to fine leg for a single to bring up his century. Murali having touched down at the striker’s end, turned around and left his crease to congratulate Sangakkara. McCullum was quick to whip off the bails as the throw came in, to run out Murali.

Wolves transfer news on Sanderson

Lots of Wolves fans have been flocking to transfer news on Dion Sanderson.

Writing in his latest piece for The Athletic, Tim Spiers has revealed that the Midlands club are giving serious consideration to recalling the defender from his loan spell at Birmingham City, at least as cover in January. They would then potentially send him out on loan again if they can get their other centre-backs fit.

Sanderson has done well in the Championship so far this season, ranking highly among his Blues teammates in terms of average interceptions (1.5), clearances (four) and blocks (0.4) per game (WhoScored). Indeed, with Willy Boly’s injury, he could be useful cover at centre-back for Bruno Lage.

However, some Wolves supporters feel as if his good loan spell should not be disrupted, and that they should look to sign central defenders instead.

“So mess with his development because the board as usual isn’t backing the manager. Shock”

“Just keep him there and back Lage to bring in some CB’s, because or else we mess with his development. Same happened last season with Morgan Gibbs-White”

“Instead of buying a first team CB we are going to stunt the progress of one of our own by making him sit on the bench. Can see the same happening with Gibbs-White and maybe even Giles”

“Buy a defender that we’ve needed for years anyway? No mate, let’s recall a settling defender at a Championship club, a penny saved is a penny earned!”

Gatito Fernández minimiza protesto no aeroporto: 'Clube grande'
