Clinical South Africa prepare to raise stakes

Andrew Miller previews England’s clash with South Africa at Trent Bridge

Match factsThursday June 10
Start time 17.30 (16.30GMT)Big PictureIn their contrasting styles, England and South Africa have each displayed two sides to their Twenty20 character in the opening rounds of this competition. England veered from complacency in their first-night humiliation against the Dutch to determination in their subsequent demolition of Pakistan; South Africa steamrolled Scotland by 130 runs on Sunday, then struggled to manage even a run a ball against New Zealand. The subtle difference, of course, is that even when South Africa were off the boil, they still managed to emerge victorious. Graeme Smith’s men have been on a roll during a memorable year on the road, and as the end of their odyssey draws nigh, they’ve forged themselves a unit that can cope with all conditions. Clinical is the word that best describes their approach, and it’s not without good reason that they start this match as favourites.Nevertheless, England have good reason for optimism going into the Super Eights, not least because there was a point midway through the weekend when they thought their tournament was over before it had begun. The manner in which they responded to their Dutch disaster was encouraging if not outright impressive, as they put a distracted Pakistan side in its place and progressed with aplomb.Humiliation has a habit of sharpening one’s focus for future engagements, and there’s little question that England are now taking this competition deadly seriously. As has been shown on numerous occasions already in the past week, Twenty20 is a format in which any team can win on its day. An upset can never be ruled out, not even against the most disciplined team in the tournament.Form guideEngland WLLWW
South Africa WWWWLWatch out for…AB de Villiers is a fearsome striker of a cricket ball. Against Scotland on Sunday, his 79 not out included 11 boundaries from 34 deliveries, six of which sailed clean over the ropes. Combining balance and timing with a followthrough as extravagant as his appetite for runs, he is the kingpin of South Africa’s middle-order, and the man most likely to shred England’s prospects in the closing overs. Had he not been bumped down the order to allow his team-mates valuable practice against New Zealand, South Africa would surely have mustered more than 128 for 7.He may be rattling with painkillers, but Kevin Pietersen is also rattling with resolve. His dodgy Achilles was not risked against the Dutch, but with their tournament on the line, England had not option but to whistle their main man back off the bench against Pakistan. He did not disappoint with 58 from 38 balls, an innings that included a vast drilled six over long-off. For a man who professed to being “70% fit” it was an impressive effort. What will he produce when he’s back at the peak of his form and fitness?Team newsAfter foolishly omitting most of their kingpin players against the Dutch, England didn’t come close to repeating that mistake against Pakistan. It seems fair to assume that they’ll pick something approaching the same line-up again, with perhaps Adil Rashid dipping out in favour of Ryan Sidebottom (or, conceivably, Graham Napier) if the Trent Bridge wicket is deemed to favour the pacemen.England (probable) 1 Luke Wright, 2 Ravi Bopara, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Owais Shah, 5 Paul Collingwood (capt), 6 Dimitri Mascarenhas, 7 James Foster (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Ryan Sidebottom, 11 James AndersonCurious selection scuppered their prospects on home soil at the 2007 World Twenty20, but South Africa have picked their most potent line-up available this time around. From Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis through to de Villiers and Albie Morkel, they have batsmen for all occasions, and in Dale Steyn, Johan Botha and Wayne Parnell, bowlers for all conditions.South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Jacques Kallis, 3 Herschelle Gibbs, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Roelof van der Merwe, 9 Johan Botha, 10 Wayne Parnell, 11 Dale Steyn.Pitch and conditionsA firm and true surface has been prepared at Trent Bridge – firm enough for Sanath Jayasuriya to swipe 81 from 47 balls in Sri Lanka’s victory over West Indies – but it is the overhead conditions that will be of most interest to the bowlers. With further filthy weather anticipated overnight, swing may be the thing for bowlers on both sides.Stats and TriviaEngland and South Africa have only faced each other once in T20Is internationals – at the 2007 World Twenty20, when Albie Morkel’s late acceleration proved the difference between the sides. They did have another match scheduled for August 2008, but that was rained off.Quotes”We are tactically quite astute and calm under pressure. We’d rather look at executing good skills rather than get into scrambles that don’t really need to be there.”

“We went out for a burger.”
Paul Collingwood reveals how he raised the spirits of Stuart Broad ahead of his matchwinning performance against Pakistan.

Everton express an interest in Cyle Larin

Everton could secure the services of Besiktas striker Cyle Larin over the coming months as new manager Rafa Benitez looks to bolster his threadbare forward line.

What’s the story?

According to Turkish outlet Haber365, the 26-year-old has rejected the Black Eagles’ offer of a new £30,000-a-week deal, meaning he’s set to become a free agent next summer as things stand.

The report states that Larin’s next destination is likely to be England, with Besiktas braced for Premier League offers, and the Toffees, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly the club’s taking a keen interest in the situation.

It’s believed that the English trio have expressed an interest in the contract rebel ahead of a potential move, meaning an imminent exit could be on the cards.

Marcel Brands must swoop

Larin rose to prominence after scoring a career-best 23 times in 45 appearances throughout 2020/21, firing Besiktas a the league and cup double, and catching the eye of several European heavyweights as a result.

However, the Canada international has been a household name for North American football fans for several years.

Once at Orlando City in Major League Soccer (MLS), Larin earned praise from then-teammate and legendary midfielder Kaka, who tipped him to achieve big things in his career.

“I think Cyle can go far,” Kaka said at an MLS media day, via Goal.com. “Cyle is a very good player and the third season for us will be great, but I think Cyle can play in a big team in Europe as well.”

His national team head coach John Herdman then lavished further praise on the 6 foot 2 beast earlier this year, dubbing the striker “an absolute predator” who “has that ability”, via Total Soccer Project.

“There’s been real improvement and development in his game,” added Canada captain Atiba Hutchinson. “Not only the goals he’s been scoring, but his work ethic, his understanding of the game. He’s become a lot more tidy as a player.”

Therefore, Everton’s director of football, Marcel Brands must swoop for Larin over the winter window, providing Benitez with some much-needed strength in depth upfront.

Current striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is set for an extended spell on the sidelines through injury, and his 32-year-old backup Salomon Rondon is yet to find the back of the net in seven extremely underwhelming appearances.

'Sem saudade do ex!' Ceifador brilha e Flu vence o Galo de Fred e He-Man

Seria outro golaço do meia-atacante do Atlético-MG.

Storms thwart Nottinghamshire victory bid

After the storms in the north-east earlier in the week, it was ironic that Nottinghamshire should find themselves thwarted by the weather here just as Durham were dodging the downpours to win at the Riverside

The Bulletin by Jon Culley at Trent Bridge03-Jul-2009
ScorecardAfter the storms in the north-east earlier in the week, it was ironic that Nottinghamshire should find themselves thwarted by the weather here just as Durham were dodging the downpours to win at the Riverside.Strongly placed overnight with Lancashire facing a long day’s struggle to save a draw, Chris Read’s team were kept off the field until three in the afternoon as one wave of heavy rain swept through the East Midlands before lunch, to be followed by another early in the afternoon.Once mopping up began, the £700,000 drainage system installed at Trent Bridge during the winter coped admirably, allowing groundstaff to tip gallons of water off the covers on to the grass, safe in the knowledge that it would disappear in a matter of minutes. But while the clouds ultimately gave way to sunny conditions more in keeping with the first three days, the players had exchanged handshakes shortly after five o’clock with Lancashire, 22 for 1 overnight chasing a theoretical 393 to win, comfortable at 97 for 3.Nottinghamshire had struck one early blow when Karl Brown, dropped by David Hussey at third slip on 18 off Charlie Shreck, was safely pouched by the Australian in the next over, giving Ryan Sidebottom his third wicket in the match. But they struggled to dislodge nightwatchman Kyle Hogg, who improved his career batting average with a feisty 34. He eventually succumbed to a Darren Pattinson inswinger but that was Nottinghamshire’s only other success, the contest ending with Mal Loye unbeaten on 31.”It was pretty frustrating because on a wearing wicket I’d like to think that with our attack we would have pressed home our advantage,” Nottinghamshire captain Read said. “Having said that, without the work that was done on the outfield over the winter, we might not have seen a ball bowled.”But we played some good cricket in the match. Mark Wagh and David Hussey battled extremely well on Thursday afternoon to put us in such a strong position.”Mark’s innings was excellent and David was very selfless in the way he played and together they kept the game moving to give us an extended opportunity to bowl at them.”It is wonderful to have David back in the side,” he added. “Adam Voges has done a terrific job for us this year and we are sorry he had to go off to play for Australia A but with David it is almost like welcoming back an old friend. He knows Trent Bridge inside out and the way he has come in and struck the ball around it is like he has never been away.”Mark is one of the most elegant batsmen in the Championship and his record in the four-day game for us has been fantastic. We rely on him as a number three and he has been brilliant in that role.”Read is perfectly placed, of course, in his role as wicketkeeper, to deliver judgment on Sidebottom’s well-being and although the England left-armer could not send down more than five overs, when he would have preferred and extended bowl, his team-mate believes he is ready to hit peak form.”Ryan did not get the success he deserved,” he said. “His pace is good, he is putting the ball in the right areas and he was my go-to bowler. Should England call on him in the next week he will be well prepared.”He needed to get some overs under his belt and it was credit to the ECB for letting him play in this game.”The result allowed Durham to stretch their lead at the top, although Nottinghamshire will have the opportunity to peg that back when Durham visit Trent Bridge later this month.

Lloris, Davies & Hojbjerg worst for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a dismal 3-0 loss at home to Manchester United on Saturday evening in a game where they did not have a single shot on target.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with a sublime finish before Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford wrapped up the points for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team. Using statistical website SofaScore, The Transfer Tavern has analysed the three worst players to have played 45 minutes or more for Spurs on the day:

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Admittedly Hojbjerg was tied with Oliver Skipp in terms of being the third-worst rated Spurs player by SofaScore, with a 6.3 rating. However, given that he was not substituted off and the youngster was, he had more time to gain his poor rating.

The 26-year-old lost out on five of his duels and failed to make any tackles in the game. The Denmark international also did not make any key passes and lost possession of the ball on 19 separate occasions, the third-most out of any of his team-mates.

Ben Davies

Davies was rated as Tottenham’s second-worst player with a measly 6.1 overall rating from SofaScore.

The left-back failed to make any dribbles, key passes or clearances, while he also lost possession 16 times and missed one ‘big chance’.

The Welshman was given a yellow card with just over 10 minutes to go, which pretty much summed up his evening.

Hugo Lloris

Unsurprisingly given that he conceded three goals, Lloris was given the worst overall rating by SofaScore at 5.9.

The Spurs captain only made one save in the entire match and lost the ball four times, while he also failed to record a key pass when playing out from the back.

Nuno Espirito Santo will find himself under pressure after this performance, and many of the Tottenham players need to have a look at themselves as well.
