Liverpool are ‘leading the charge’ to sign Pape Abou Cisse from Olympiacos, according to The Daily Mail.
The lowdown
The defender, who is 1.98 metres tall, has been at Olympiacos since the summer of 2017 but spent the latter half of last season on loan at Ligue 1 outfit Saint-Etienne (via Transfermarkt).
According to WhoScored, his main strengths lie in winning aerial duels and intercepting the ball, but his passing is a weakness.
The 26-year-old has three years left on his contract in Piraeus and is valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt. He is currently on international duty with Senegal, linking up with Liverpool forward Sadio Mane.
The latest
Liverpool were among the clubss who sent scouts to watch Cisse in action against Fenerbahce in the Europa League last month, as per The Daily Mail.
Arsenal and Everton also had officials in attendance, and while ‘several inquiries’ have been lodged, Liverpool are understood to be ‘showing the most intent so far’.
Cisse features on the Reds’ shortlist as they look to further strengthen at centre-back following the £36m summer addition of Ibrahima Konate.
The verdict
This would be a questionable decision from Liverpool, as Cisse would probably slot into fifth in the centre-back pecking order behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Konate, especially if his ball distribution is suspect.
That’s also the position Nathaniel Phillips currently occupies, and he has found game-time so hard to come by that he was given a runout with the under-21s in the EFL Trophy last week.
Liverpool don’t need any more centre-backs and should look to use all of their available funds elsewhere.

Bermuda are almost certainly going to lose a passionate coach who once believed his side had what it took to beat the best
Will Luke in Johannesburg10-Apr-2009
Gus Logie: “No one seemed to really care that much”•International Cricket Council
Bermuda’s coach, Gus Logie, has attacked the lack of desire and professionalism with certain individuals, 48 hours after the country lost their ODI status and failed to qualify for the 2011 World Cup. Logie’s four-year contract expires in September and he gave the strongest indication yet that there would need to be widespread changes for him to even consider renewing it.”We, the board, have put a lot of things in place. We have had professional people come in from all walks of life to come and work in Bermuda, such as Mike Young, one of the best fielding coaches there is,” he told Cricinfo in Johannesburg. “And [ex] players come to Bermuda to offer their expertise. But the general interest has been so low, that these guys aren’t interested in coming back. No one seemed to really care that much.”But when you lose ODI status, it has hit home to everyone just how important it is. The government has put a lot of money [US$11m] into development of the sport on the island, and therefore they deserve to have some sort of success out of it. You can put as much as money as you want into it, but it comes down to the individuals and how much they desire, how much they want it. We plan as much as possible but if the desire of the players isn’t as high as it should be, then obviously it makes it very difficult.”Losing ODI status cuts off a vital financial artery from the ICC, but the downgraded standing has a greater impact: potential demotion to the ranks of an Affiliate nation. A team of bursars and baggage-handlers such as the UAE – a side of cobbled-together amateurs who forsake their jobs and cherished annual holiday just to play for their country – are, on paper, a side less equipped than Bermuda but who, like an untapped Sharjah oil reservoir, are bubbling rich with talent and desire, sufficiently so to qualify for the Super Eights of the World Cup Qualifiers.Bermuda, on the other hand, are a group of semi-professional cricketers with the backing of its government, one who invested $11m in the sport, but whose only consistent facet is failure. It isn’t too outlandish to suggest that Bermuda have been a four-year eye-sore of ICC’s attempt to laud and publicise its Associates.Their consistent lack of success is nevertheless a surprise given the investment they have had, and it may raise many eyebrows to learn that Bermudans’ interest in cricket, as a past-time, is greater than most other Associate nations. The sport is discussed by locals in cafes and bars. Their cricketers – in particular Dwayne Leverock – have reached a level of fame that the likes of the Irish, Scots and Kenyans can only dream about.”It annoys me, yes, that all the hard work and commitment, not just from myself but from many people, [has been wasted]. The board have tried to put guidelines in place – not just internationally but locally – and opportunities were given to players,” said Logie. “But over the past two weeks, we really haven’t shown that level of commitment, or hunger, or desire or focus from the individuals. Because that’s what it boils down to: on the field of play. We felt we let ourselves down tremendously, under tremendous expectations, and it hasn’t really and truly happened.”The reasons for their slip from grace are inexplicably numerous. As an indicator of the flat-lining development programme in place, their women’s team were last year bowled out for a comedic nadir of 13 . They lost in four balls. But Logie has another explanation, one which is far more deep-rooted.”We have had a lot of local problems. We talk about some of the individuals who would rather play County Cup instead of representing their country, which has never been in the forefront [of their minds],” he says. “We try to galvanise these individuals into playing for their country, but that has not always been the case [that they wanted to]. So we have always suffered in not having the best players available for our internationals.”We’ve not been able to play ODIs at home, that’s something else. We need the grounds to develop properly the batsmen and the bowlers, better pitches to play on and that hasn’t materialised over the years. There are a lot of things conspiring against us to make it very difficult. We’re always fighting against the odds.We have tried to sort it out as much as possible with what we’ve had, but we were always up against it. It made it even more difficult when we’d play teams who were much more professional in their approach and attitude, and their motiviation was different from Bermuda.”But perhaps the most telling indicator of a possible apathetic attitude was their captain’s reaction to the loss to Afghanistan. Irvine Romaine, calling upon all his hours of media training, attempted to shrug off the loss as a one-off on April 2. Unfortunately, his cheerful demeanour and perma-grin only added to the feeling that being totally outplayed by eleven refugees didn’t really matter. Nevermind, eh? There’s always tomorrow. Except that this time, there isn’t a tomorrow.Their future as a cricketing nation is hazy. Last year saw numerous controversies poke their head above the parapet – allegations of drug-use, players and umpires failing (or forgetting) to turn up for local matches and so on – which gave rise to the sense of hopelessness which has pervaded their international performances.”Allthough the board have tried to professionalise the squad, Bermuda is a unique little island because the living standard is a lot higher than most places. Young people don’t see cricket as a viable option, or as a future.”It has to take an effort from everyone. It’s not going to happen just through one or two individuals in charge of the board. It has to be a country-wide effort where cricket is seen as being important. Youngsters must see the game as a viable [career] option. Not just as a past-time. They can make careers out of it. They juts don’t see it as being viable so you’re fighting against a tide of what we really want as opposed to what you actually get.”Worst of all, they are almost certainly going to lose a passionate coach who once believed his side had what it took to beat the best. The next four years will determine whether Bermuda rise again, or continue to yawn lazily at the prospect of the hard graft required.
The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has delivered a new update on where things currently stand with Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce.
What’s the story?
Following the completion of the takeover last week, all signs have pointed towards an imminent exit for Bruce, and while that hasn’t happened just yet, Hope has insisted it appears to be a case of when, not if.
He said: “Meanwhile, head coach Steve Bruce remains in post having met with Amanda Staveley at the training ground on Monday. However, it was always understood that it would take until at least the middle of the week before removing Bruce ahead of Sunday’s visit of Spurs.
“The focus of the new owners remains on the managerial situation, with appointments such as sporting director and chief executive to follow in due course.
“Sources have played down the likelihood of Frank Lampard being the man to take charge, although they have also stressed that many options are on the table given the number of voices involved in the process.”
Fans will be excited
Make no mistake about it, Bruce being axed would be the kind of first era-defining move that the club’s new owners could make.
The Magpies boss has been under fire from supporters for a long time now, and getting rid of him before this weekend’s Premier League clash against Tottenham seems like the perfect time to breathe some fresh air into the club.
Hope’s update that the new owners will be removing Bruce from his post is sure to reassure fans who might have been worried about the lack of action on that front up until now.
And, the suggestion that there are a number of voices involved in deciding who the next man at the helm should be is exciting reading, given when you think the kind of small pool of power that existed during Mike Ashley’s regime.
Newcastle fans will surely be excited at the prospect of a new era.
Meanwhile, Newcastle could sign this former Premier League star for free…

Estamos próximos (do time ideal).

Plays of the Day from the fourth day of the Napier Test between New Zealand and India
Sidharth Monga in Napier29-Mar-2009
Rahul Dravid sends the ball over long-on•Associated Press
The six In the 46th over of India’s innings, Rahul Dravid did something he has done only 14 times in his Test career, and not once since May 2007. He had just been beaten by a straight ball from Jeetan Patel, when he saw an over-pitched flighted delivery. He got onto the front foot and swung cleanly over long-on for only his 15th six in Tests. To put that figure in perspective: Sunil Gavaskar hit 26, Geoffrey Boycott hit eight, and Chris Tavaré none. The banner of the season There have been quite a few but one at McLean Park today read: “Doull for PM”. However the real winner is: “Jesse is our dad”, two days after a reader wrote to Cricinfo saying “I want Jesse’s babies.”The longer walk Yesterday Dravid was an irritated man after he got out. He had thrown away a century and a collapse had followed. Today when he got out, Dravid’s reaction was similar, but for a different reason. He hadn’t hit the ball when given out caught at bat-pad. It was an innings of immense concentration that ended in an unfortunate manner and the reaction was natural. Dravid shook his head even as New Zealand appealed, and was visibly shocked when the finger went up. He kept hitting the ground with his bat until he left the ground.New-ball bogey no more Dravid’s second-innings dismissal came in a similar situation to his first – minutes before tea just before the second new ball was due. New Zealand ran through the Indian batting line-up with the new ball on the third day, but today the new ball traveled to all parts of the ground. Sachin Tendulkar hit three boundaries in the third over with the new ball: a tickle from outside leg, a whip off the pads, and a lovely cover drive on one knee.Bull’s eye again Iain O’Brien had struck the blow which cost Tendulkar a possible double-century in the Christchurch ODI, when he had to retire-hurt on 163 with five overs to go. Today, two balls after he had been punched to the boundary by Tendulkar, O’Brien went for a bouncer. Tendulkar tried to pull but the ball didn’t rise as high as he expected. Tendulkar got hit in the ribs again roughly in the same area as the first hit.

It’s a do-or-die match for Kings XI Punjab in this, the last lap of the league matches, and they could not have asked for tougher opposition
The Preview by Judhajit Basu15-May-2009Match factsMay 15, 2009 Start time 16.30 (14.30 GMT, 20.00 IST) Big PictureKings XI Punjab would do well to get Yusuf Abdulla back in as they look to make a final surge towards a semis spot•AFP
It’s a do-or-die match for Kings XI Punjab in this, the last lap of the league matches, and they could not have asked for tougher opposition. Yuvraj Singh and his men have been indifferent throughout the tournament and it will be up to the captain to rally his troops if they are to make giant strides from their current second-last position to a top four spot. But the going promises to get tougher with matches against the top tier teams still to come. The confidence from a win here could provide the fuel for the final push.Delhi have been on song with near-flawless performances this season. They were outdone on two occasions by brilliant individual performances – succumbing to Shadab Jakati while chasing 164 versus Chennai and to Yusuf Pathan’s late tornado while defending against Rajasthan. AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan have been magnificient in the middle order while the bowlers have backed them up suitably and played a big part in the team’s success. Virender Sehwag’s lack of runs and Gautam Gambhir’s lack of authority at the top have been minor concerns for Delhi.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Delhi Daredevils: WWWWL There seems to be no apparent problem – the title favourites tag gaining further credence with their remarkable win against Deccan – but Delhi would be wary of complacency. With the teams separated by a few points in the table, they would look to stay in pole position and seal their passage to the final four with a win here.Kings XI Punjab: LWLLW Bowling has been the biggest letdown for Kings XI Punjab. Yusuf Abdulla, Irfan Pathan and Piyush Chawla seem to have run out of steam after a promising start. The rest of the pack have had forgettable performances – notably Sreesanth and VRV Singh. With matchwinners aplenty in the batting department, Yuvraj would believe a collective effort which results in a big score may just be the only way to ensure maximum points.Watch out forVirender Sehwag: Expect some fireworks from the Delhi captain who has not had a standout innings as yet. The captain would be keen to cash in on Punjab’s weak bowling and bat himself into form. Incidentally, his highest score of the tournament came against the same opposition in a rain-marred match in Cape Town.TeamsSreesanth has received more hurt, following his recuperation from the stress fracture to the back. With two wickets from the four matches at 69.50 at an economy rate of 10.69, he will surely make way for Abdulla, their leading wicket-taker, who has sat out the last three games. Word is also not out on Mahela Jayawardene’s availability after picking up a hamstring injury. Vikramjeet Malik may be drafted in to aid Abdulla’s inclusion.Kings XI Punjab (probable): 1 Sunny Sohal, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Karan Goel, 5 Yuvraj Singh (capt), 6 Irfan Pathan, 7 Brett Lee, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 VRV Singh, 10 Vikramjeet Malik, 11 Yusuf Abdulla.Delhi have been on song throughout this season and it is unlikely that they will change the winning XI. Sehwag, though, might bat higher, up from the No. 5 he came in at in the last match.Delhi Daredevils (probable): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 David Warner, 3 Virender Sehwag (capt), 4 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 5 AB de Villiers, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Rajat Bhatia, 8 Amit Mishra, 9 Pradeep Sangwan, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 Dirk Nannes.Stats and triviaThis will be the first of the two matches being played at the OUTsurance Oval in Bloemfontein. A sparingly-used pitch at the international level, the last ODI played here between South Africa and Kenya in October last year, the only game since September 2006, saw the hosts piling on 336 batting first as they stormed to a 159-run win.AB de Villiers currently holds the record for the most catches, with 11 from 10 matches, including three against Chennai at Johannesburg.Head-to-head recordA rained-out affair at Newlands saw Delhi prevailing by 10 wickets via the D/L method. Punjab won both their games against Delhi last season. In the first match Punjab’s fast bowlers wrecked Delhi’s top-order in Mohali to help secure a four-wicket victory in the final over. The second game was marred by weather and Punjab won by six runs under the D/L method after Delhi had scored 118 for 4 in 11 overs.
Rangers put their early Europa League group stage woes to bed as they ran out 2-0 winners at Ibrox against Brondby on Thursday night.
Steven Gerrard’s side were beaten 2-0 and 1-0 by Lyon and Sparta Prague respectively in their first two matches, but they finally got off the mark against the Danish outfit this week.
Kemar Roofe and Leon Balogun scored the all-important goals for the Gers as they put on a dominant display in front of their home fans at Ibrox.
However, it was not all sunshine and rainbows as one player in particular struggled to show off the best of his abilities on the night – John Lundstram.
The summer signing from Sheffield United endured a difficult night on a personal level as he struggled to make his mark on the game. He lined up alongside Steven Davis and Joe Aribo, taking up the central position in the midfield as he looked to dictate the flow of the game.
However, he offered next to nothing defensively. As per SofaScore, he lost 100% of his contested duels in the match. He ended the game with one interception and zero tackles, blocks or clearances as he failed to provide defensive steel in the middle of the park.
In comparison, his midfield companion Aribo won 10 of his 15 duels and made four tackles and one interception against the Danish side. This shows how slack Lundstram’s defending was as the Nigerian was able to stand out by imposing himself on the opposition and winning the ball back to keep Rangers on the front foot.
Offensively, the 27-year-old did not fare much better. As per SofaScore, he failed with 100% of his dribble attempts and did not manage a single effort on target. He did, however, complete 97% of his passes and create one chance in the match, showing that he was reliable on the ball, albeit unimaginative.
Lundstram showed that he has the quality to perform well at this level in the defeat to Lyon earlier this season. As per SofaScore, he won five of his eight duels, made three tackles, three interceptions and completed 100% of his attempted dribbles that night.
Therefore, he let Gerrard down with his performance as he was unable to stand out in midfield like he did in the clash with Lyon. His manager will surely want consistency from the player and the 27-year-old’s display against Brondby was far from his best.
