The ECB has decided to terminate its contracts with the Stanford group but the pressure on Giles Clarke and David Collier continues to mount

The ECB has decided to terminate, with immediate effect, its contracts with the Stanford group. That means it will not participate in any further Stanford Twenty20 matches in Antigua or the Stanford-sponsored international quadrangular Twenty20 events in England.But the announcement failed to appease the continuing pressure on Giles Clarke, the board’s chairman, and David Collier, the chief executive, and revelations in the Daily Telegraph that the ECB was warned to tighten its operating standards before signing the Stanford deal will hardly help them. It also revealed only Clarke and Collier had access to the details of the Stanford contract.”The ECB was shocked by the charges filed against the Stanford organisation and personnel earlier this week by the SEC,” Collier said after a meeting at Lord’s. “Within minutes of the announcement, the ECB determined to suspend any further discussions with Stanford and the board has now agreed to terminate the ECB’s agreements with Stanford.”Given the uncertainty of the financial markets and the sponsorship dispute between Digicel and the West Indies Cricket Board over the matches in Antigua in 2008, the executive committee and board, when setting the 2009 budgets, took a prudent position in creating a contingency in case the Antigua matches did not proceed,” he said. “For that reason, ECB was able to confirm immediately … there would be no impact on fee payments in 2009.”But for many the move is too little, too late. “More and more allegations are going to be made about Stanford as every day passes,” said Leicestershire chairman Neil Davidson. “The link with the ECB is always going to be there. Giles has got to fall on his sword.”

What’s the word?

According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Spurs have once again been linked with a move for AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

The Serie A outfit have not seen an advance in talks over a new deal and are becoming increasingly worried about losing the 24-year-old for nothing.

Clubs outside of Italy are able to agree on a pre-contract with the Ivory Coast international from January.

Paratici is facing stiff competition, however, with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United also mooted with interest.

Shades of Dembele

This would be quite the stroke of genius from the Italian supremo, and it’s certainly not the first time he has looked to complete a deal of his nature.

In fact, he was known for this during his time at Juventus, having signed the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Kingsley Coman, Dani Alves, Aaron Ramsey and many more on free transfers.

Spurs have a need for reinforcements in midfield as the balance of Nuno Santo’s side is not quite right – perhaps they are lacking a Mousa Dembele-type presence to hold everything together in the engine room.

That’s what Kessie could bring to the north Londoners next year.

The young midfield powerhouse has previously been described as “devastating” by former AC Milan striker Antonio Cassano, who added: “He reminds me of the Yaya Toure at the best times. He is a different player but in terms of impact, he is holding Milan’s midfield alone.”

Meanwhile, his former boss Vincenzo Montella once dubbed him “an extraordinary player” with “sublime intelligence.”

Indeed, Kessie can do it all, both in defence and attack.

Only Zlatan Ibrahimovic (15) scored more than the Ivorian’s 13 league goals for Milan last season, whilst he averaged 1.4 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1.2 dribbles per Serie A game, via WhoScored.

The Belgian beast was a key cog under Mauricio Pochettino and he too was a player who could hold onto the ball and get forward with relative ease. He started his career as a winger, so he was a crucial and intelligent figure in the final third, where Kessie evidently likes to get involved given his goalscoring exploits.

Paratici could well find Spurs’ next Dembele in the £36m-rated AC Milan monster.

A partir daí, o Grêmio cresceu em campo e recebeu a primeira boa oportunidade quando Fernandinho, roubou a bola e avançou para o gol. Derrubado na meia-lua, cavou uma boa falta para o Tricolor. Cartão amarelo para René e Fernandinho foi para a cobrança com categoria, abrindo o placar no Barradão aos 7 minutos.

Erros de passes e tiradas de bola marcaram os minutos seguintes até que o Vitória teve mais uma chance de gol aos 29. Cleiton Xavier cruzou na área, mas Tréllez subiu muito e a bola saiu por cima do gol. O Vitória voltou a se empenhar na defesa com tirada de Kanu dentro da pequena área. No contra-ataque, Tréllez se atrasou na cara do gol e sobrou para Cortez evitar o empate.

Mais uma chance veio aos 42. Caíque cruzou de cabeça para a área esperando André Lima, que não conseguiu chegar. No contra-ataque, Maicon encontrou Pedro Rocha com um belo passe para dentro da área. O atacante ajeitou para Fernandinho, que tocou para Arthur aproveitar a saída adiantada de Fernando Miguel e mandar para o fundo da rede.

Sob vaia da torcida, Uillian Correia dominou na intermediária e arriscou chute de longe, que parou nas mãos de Grohe, marcando o fim do primeiro tempo.
Na volta para a segunda etapa, erros marcaram os minutos iniciais e o Vitória, finalmente conseguiu aproveitar uma das falhas da defesa gremista. Na cobrança de escanteio, Carlos Eduardo cruzou na área, Alan Costa desviou, mas David deu um peixinho um tanto desajeitado para o gol de Marcelo Grohe, suficiente para diminuir a diferença aos 12 minutos.

Sábia escolha de Renato foi colocar o atacante Everton no lugar de Lucas Barrios. Depois de o Vitória conseguir se aproximar do gol e ser parado por Thyere, Pedro Rocha recebeu a bola livre e tentou passe para a área do Leão. Em uma nova falha da zaga, Everton buscou a bola e mandou para Ramiro, que de fora da área, pegou de primeira e enviou para o fundo do gol, aos 17.

Por um bom tempo, o Vitória conseguiu se manter no campo adversário. O estreante Tréllez por pouco não marcou o segundo gol depois de dominar a bola e chutar forte em direção ao gol. Porém, ainda pegando ritmo de jogo, o gringo só conseguiu chutar pela linha de fundo.

Aos 29, David arrancou pela esquerda e, do lado da área, bateu cruzado e quase diminuiu a diferença do placar. O Grêmio demorou para conseguir voltar a oferecer perigo, até que Cortez brigou pela bola enviada por Pedro Rocha e mandou para a pequena área. Alan Costa e Geferson falharam e deixaram a bola livre para Everton, que errou na finalização, perdendo uma chance de ouro.

Aos 37, Marcelo Oliveira entrou para substituir Pedro Rocha e, em seu primeiro lance, tabelou com Arthur conseguindo sair bem com a bola. O Vitória voltou a pressionar e teve a sua melhor chance do segundo tempo quando Kannemann errou no corte dentro da área e deixou a bola sobrar para Tréllez, que finalizou à esquerda do gol de Grohe.

Mais quatro minutos de acréscimos foram dados, mas nada adiantou. As equipes seguiram tocando a bola sem força para finalizações e o Vitória novamente deixou os gramados sob vaia dos poucos torcedores que estavam no Barradão.

A Newcastle United scout was in attendance for FC Porto’s game this weekend, according to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Newcastle only made one first-team signing during the summer transfer window, with Joe Willock’s loan move from Arsenal made permanent for a fee of £26.46million.

But they may feel the need to improve their squad at the mid-point of the campaign, with their poor start raising the prospect of a relegation battle.

Newcastle are winless after seven matches and find themselves 19th in the table.

If Porto players are indeed under consideration, then they’ll have the benefit of seeing how they measure up against Premier League opposition.

Liverpool are in Porto’s Champions League group and after the Reds ran out 5-1 victors in Portugal last week – they’ll meet again in November.

The latest

A Newcastle official apparently took in the Primeira Liga action at the Estadio do Dragao on Sunday. Porto went up against Pacos Ferreira, the team Spurs knocked out of the Europa Conference League.

It’s not clear how many players were being studied.

What we do know is that Porto fell behind early on to a Nuno Santos goal, but were level before the break after Luis Diaz’s sixth goal of the season.

Left-back Wendell then scored what proved to be the winner seven minutes into the second half.

The verdict

It’s tempting to speculate. Who exactly were Newcastle watching? Well, we heard during the transfer window that Steve Bruce was keen to add a centre-back and a defensive midfielder.

Sergio Conceicao selected two veterans at the heart of his defence – 38-year-old Pepe and 34-year-old Ivan Marcano.

The star of the show most weeks for Porto at the moment however is Diaz, who was strongly linked with a Premier League move to Everton this summer, perhaps the Magpies are planning a January hijacking?

وكان ميسي قد رحل عن برشلونة في أغسطس من العام الماضي، بعد 21 عامًا في أروقة النادي الكتالوني، حيث فشل في تجديد عقده.

وأضاف: “أود أن أعيده لنا، لن يكون الأمر سهلاً ولكني أعتقد أنه بالإستراتيجية الصحيحة يمكننا القيام بذلك، أعتقد أن ميسي كان أهم لاعب في تاريخنا، خلال فترة طويلة من النجاح كان القائد، كان هو الشخص الذي أثار حماسة مشجعينا، سنبذل قصارى جهدنا لجعل ميسي ينهي مسيرته في برشلونة ويصفق الجميع”.

وعندما سُئل عن مدى احتمالية عودة ميسي، أوضح لابورتا: “كما قلت، لدينا دين أخلاقي لليو، لم تكن نهاية ليو في برشلونة الأفضل، كان وقتًا صعبًا، كان علينا اتخاذ قرار ووضع النادي فوق أفضل لاعب في تاريخنا”.

واستمر: “لكن أعتقد أنه يتعين علينا العمل الآن لجعل ميسي ينهي مسيرته من جديد مرتديًا قميص برشلونة الذي يتم الإشادة به في كل مكان، سنبذل قصارى جهدنا لمنحه النهاية التي يستحقها”.

وردًا عما إذا كان قد تحدث إلى ميسي لمعرفة ما إذا كانت لديه رغبة في العودة، قال لابورتا: “كل ما يمكنني قوله هو أنني سأبذل قصارى جهدي، هذا كل شيء”.
