ICC to send security delegation to Pakistan

The ICC has cast doubt on the viability of Pakistan as a venue for international cricket by announcing it will conduct an independent security assessment of the country before appointing officials for Sri Lanka’s tour next month

The ICC has cast doubt on the viability of Pakistan as a venue for international cricket by announcing it will conduct an independent security assessment of the country before appointing officials for Sri Lanka’s tour next month.Sri Lanka had agreed to tour after India called off their scheduled tour to the country on Thursday, following a directive from the government in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks. David Morgan, the ICC president, told the Indian news channel CNN-IBN that India’s decision was “an acceptable non-compliance” in keeping with the organisation’s rules.”We will do an independent assessment of the situation in Pakistan to ensure the safety of the umpires and match referee,” Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said in Mohali during the second Test between India and England. “I am convinced the Sri Lankan board will also do everything to ascertain whether it is safe to play in Pakistan and also seek assurances from the Pakistan Cricket Board.”In a statement, the ICC said that safety issues for officials and spectators were as important as those for the players. “The issue is that safety and security is not simply a matter for players; it’s also a matter for everyone else – broadcasters, journalists and match officials too, as well as spectators. From the ICC’s perspective, what would be required is that the match officials are afforded the same level of security as any or everyone else involved in the series.”The statement also raised the issue of umpires being willing to tour. “Just like with players, officials have choices about whether or not they wish to attend a tour and are also likely to be guided by the views of their own governments. [However] the ICC has a significant number of officials and would certainly expect to be able to identify enough of them to stand in the tour.”The PCB has drawn up a temporary itinerary which includes three Tests and five one-dayers and is awaiting an approval from Sri Lanka Cricket before releasing it. Sri Lanka are expected to head to Pakistan after their tour of Bangladesh ends on January 14. Pakistan have been denied the chance to host several high-profile teams this year owing to security fears. Australia pulled out of their Test tour this March and the ICC Champions Trophy was postponed to September 2009 for the same reasons.Asked about the difference between the security situation in India following last month’s Mumbai attacks and that in Pakistan, Morgan said: “They are two different countries. I’m not a security expert. The feedback that I have is that the security position in the two countries is significantly different.”Lorgat, however, said a final decision on Pakistan’s hosting rights of the Champions Trophy will be taken at the ICC’s Executive Board meeting in January.”We would like to see cricket on Pakistan soil,” he said. “But again that depends on the safety and security that prevails in the area. India’s tour of Pakistan could have provided us huge inputs for the Champions Trophy, but now that it has been cancelled, Sri Lanka’s tour might provide us that input.”

Roberts criticised after Newcastle vs Leeds

Gabby Agbonlahor has criticised Tyler Roberts for failing to make an impact off of the bench for Leeds United in the Premier League on Friday night.

The Lowdown: Leeds draw

Marcelo Bielsa had to settle for a point away to Newcastle United after Allan Saint-Maximin equalised late on in the first half following an early strike from Raphinha.

Roberts came on as a substitute for Dan James just after the hour mark, but struggled to kick on in the game.

The Latest: Agbonlahor on Roberts

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England international striker, who now contributes as a pundit for Sky Sports, blasted Roberts after being asked about his performance. Agbonlahor raged:

“For me, he is not good enough for Leeds or Premier League level.

“He has some decent touches and gets in good positions, but his passing and decision-making keeps letting him down.

“It must be frustrating to watch for Leeds fans as moves keep breaking down when Roberts is on the ball. It’s shocking how often that happens.

“I don’t see him as the answer for Leeds, even though Marcelo Bielsa has a lot of faith in him.

“Leeds are crying out for a number 10, a James Maddison, a Jack Grealish, an Emi Buendia, and they haven’t got one.”

The Verdict: Must do better

If Roberts has any hopes of getting into the starting XI regularly, then he must do a lot better coming on from the bench.

The Wales international lost out on two of his duels and failed to record a single shot on goal last night, only having 21 touches of the ball in total in almost 30 minutes of game-time (Sofascore).

He also lost possession of the ball on nine different occasions in the match, squandering the ball roughly once every 2.3 touches on average.

Agbonlahor’s criticism of a forward with only eight goals in 88 Leeds appearances is justified, and Roberts must now work hard in training to show Bielsa what he can give to the team.

Domestic games helped us warm up for tour – Jayawardene

Though Sri Lanka have not played Test cricket for over three months, Mahela Jayawardene said the team had prepared for the series in Bangladesh through domestic matches back home

Mahela Jayawardene says Sri Lanka are prepared for the series in Bangladesh and ready for the challenge they expect from Bangladesh. Sri Lanka have not played Test cricket for over three months but the players were involved in the domestic season back home.”Most of the guys had four to five games under their belt before they came here. So the preparation has been really good”, Jayawardene said after the team arrived in Bangladesh on Thursday. Sri Lanka are scheduled to play a three-day tour game starting Sunday before the first of two Tests begins in Dhaka on December 26.”The memories of beating India 2-1 [in August] are still fresh. So it is always good to think about those things and make sure that we get ourselves ready for the series.”There are six new faces in the Bangladesh squad – Junaid Siddique, Imrul Kayes, Raqibul Hasan, Mahbubul Alam, Enamul Haque jnr, Sajidul Islam – from the one that toured Sri Lanka last year. Jayawardene said his side would have to analyse the new players and it was difficult to predict what sort of challenge Bangladesh would present this time.”Every time we played them has been a challenge for us. So we won’t be complacent and won’t underestimate the challenge we have got ahead of us. We have got a very good team and we just want to make sure we play good cricket.”Sri Lanka haven’t lost a single game in their last four series against Bangladesh. But Jayawardene refused to predict the outcome of the Tests, or of the ODIs that follow. “I am not a captain to give predictions. I like to take one game at a time and concentrate on that. The one-day series will come later and I will think about it then. Right now it’s the Test series.”He said the injured Ajantha Mendis will not be rushed back in to competitive cricket – though he could be fit for the second Test – and he placed his confidence in Rangana Herath, the replacement spinner. “The team we have here is very good. So we won’t rush at this juncture. If he is fit to play, we will have a fitness test back home and I know the board will make an arrangement for him. But we don’t play as individual players, we are a team that play cricket as a team.”

Netherlands women to play domestic cricket in England

Netherlands women have followed in the footsteps of their counterparts in Ireland and will participate in England’s domestic county championship in 2009

Cricinfo staff29-Jan-2009Netherlands women have followed in the footsteps of their counterparts in Ireland and will participate in England’s domestic county championship in 2009. With Scotland having been part of the fixtures since 2007, the tournament will now feature three of Europe’s leading sides.Netherlands and Ireland have been placed in the newly created fifth division though they will be competing in separate sub-divisions. Scotland are higher up in the third division. The 50-over competition format for 2009 will run from May to September and have more home and away matches for the 24 teams in the top four divisions.Clare Connor, the head of England’s women’s cricket, was confident the ECB’s structure would help Ireland and Netherlands enhance their performance. “I want to support our European neighbours to enable them to climb the ODI rankings and it seems to me that with more regular, competitive opportunities we can genuinely help them do this. I do not want to see Irish and Dutch women’s cricket get left behind in the global rankings by the growing Asian nations who are playing more and more cricket.”Richard Hobsworth, the ICC regional development manager, said the two teams’ inclusion in English domestic cricket was a boost to the women’s game in Europe. “This will allow each team to participate in regular competitive fixtures outside of their own countries; an environment which will progress their development enormously.”

Man City: Foden caught the eye vs Wycombe

Manchester City progressed through to the fourth round of the League Cup with a 6-1 win over League One outfit Wycombe on Tuesday night.

Pep Guardiola named a youthful side, with five academy products in the XI, and saw his side go 1-0 down after 22 minutes. However, goals from Kevin de Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez (2), Phil Foden, Ferran Torres and Cole Palmer secured a comfortable win for the Cityzens in the end.

The win stretches City’s unbeaten run to six games in all competitions, with a mammoth trip to Chelsea coming up next in the Premier League.

Did any players play their way into the XI for the Chelsea clash? Well, one player who must have caught Pep’s eye with his performance was midfielder Phil Foden.

The England international was instrumental in everything City managed to do going forward, stringing pieces of play together and being directly involved in three of the six goals. His delicious pass out wide to De Bruyne set up the Belgian’s equaliser before he belted in City’s third goal and then set up Torres for a tap-in with a sublime ball across the box.

Defensively, with four of his five ground duels won, Foden put a shift in and worked hard for the team in central midfield. However, it was at the other end where he showcased his best qualities. Per SofaScore, he created a whopping seven chances for his teammates, whilst also completing nine of his 10 long pass attempts.

He was also successful with four of his five attempted dribbles, showing that he produced an all-around attacking display as he created chances, scored a goal, passed well and was able to carry the team up the pitch.

The midfielder had 90 touches of the ball, highlighting how he was able to dictate the flow of the match throughout the game, bossing the middle of the park and contributing heavily to the eventual victory.

Therefore, he must have caught Pep’s eye as it was a stunning display where his best qualities shone in full view, which could improve his chances of making the XI against Chelsea.

Foden has played just 18 minutes of Premier League action this term and this showing against Wycombe could tempt the manager to start him for the first time this season in the league when they travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
