Pundit says Hudson-Odoi should have eyed late Leicester move

Dean Windass feels Callum Hudson-Odoi will pay the price after failing to secure a deadline day switch to Leicester City.

The Foxes enquired about the availability of the Chelsea winger as Brendan Rodgers looked to strengthen his squad hours before the transfer window closed.

German giants Borussia Dortmund were also hoping to complete a loan deal, with Hudson-Odoi open to going elsewhere in search of regular minutes, but he has remained at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea were unwilling to sanction a switch.

It comes despite the 20-year-old failing to make a single Premier League appearance so far this season.

Hudson-Odoi’s only involvement this term has come in the form of starting the UEFA Super Cup clash with Spanish side Villarreal, which the Blues won following a nail-biting penalty shoot-out last month.

With Hudson-Odoi’s first-team opportunities seemingly limited, former Premier League striker Windass believes Leicester would have been the ideal destination for the exciting winger to rediscover his best form.

He exclusively told Football FanCast: “He needs to play and, as a young boy, he can’t just sit on the Chelsea bench. He isn’t going to play or get minutes.

“He needed to go out and play and Brendan would have looked after him.

“He would have played for a top club in Europe and been a great signing for Leicester. I like him and think he is a strong boy.”

Flintoff hits hundred as England win easily

Andrew Flintoff’s 85-ball 100, with strong support from Owais Shah, set up a comfortable 122-run victory for England over a second-string Mumbai side in their first practice game of the tour. There were more gains for England’s batsmen than their bowlers, who, except for James Anderson, had to toil without much impact.Flintoff was a little scratchy to begin with and survived three chances. On 7 he hit a full toss from Dinesh Salunkhe, the legspinner, hard towards cover where Nilesh Kulkarni failed to hold it. Then, on 25, a sweep went flying straight to Abhijit Shetye at deep square leg but a simple chance went down. A third nervous moment came when he got a thin edge off Salunkhe, but the keeper couldn’t hold on.He made Mumbai pay dearly for those lapses as he bludgeoned his way to a century with strokes all around the ground, especially back over the bowler’s head. He hit three sixes over long-on against Salunkhe to get to 99, then pushed a single to record his first century in any form of cricket since the fourth Test against Australia, at Trent Bridge, in 2005. “We will play against better teams on this tour, obviously, but a hundred is a hundred and I’ve not scored one for ages so I’ll take it,” he said after the day’s play.Kulkarni, the Mumbai captain, offered England the chance to bat first on a pitch that had enough bounce to keep the batsmen on their toes and enough moisture for the new ball to move. Vineet Sinha found early success when Matt Prior played across the line and lost his middle stump. Prior’s opening partner, Ian Bell, also looked edgy and he was lucky when an edge flew wide of the slips. However, as the ball started to lose its shine both Bell and Shah found their feet and were quick to pick up singles.Bell was sharp to react to anything loose and Sinha was dispatched with a pull through midwicket; a couple of balls later a wristy flick brought another boundary. His half-century came up with a paddle-sweep off the first ball from Kulkarni. However, in his bid to press on, Bell failed to read the flight of Vikrant Yeligati and was stumped.England suffered another blow when they lost Kevin Pietersen, who was undone by a ball that bounced and took the outside edge. Shah concentrated on working the ball around as he bedded in and his first boundary didn’t come until the 77th ball of his innings. However, as the final 10 overs began he and Flintoff increased the tempo and the third-wicket stand was worth 133 in 20 overs when Shah pulled to midwicket. While most of their batsmen looked in useful touch England didn’t find the same momentum with the ball. Only Anderson was able to find much swing and moved the ball both ways during an impressive opening burst, which included the wicket of Rohan Bagade with a perfect outswinger.Barring Anderson, who ended his first spell with figures of 5-2-7-1, England’s bowling failed to trouble the batsmen. Flintoff, Stuart Broad and Steve Harmison eased into their duties and it took 18.2 overs to break the second-wicket partnership between Shetye and Sushant Marathe.Samit Patel and Graeme Swann, the two frontline spinners, were the only bowlers handed their full complement of overs and, on this evidence, will have to work on their loop and flight to make an impression on India’s line-up. They tried to push the ball through quickly, instead of slowing the pace and gaining purchase off the surface. The wickets Patel earned were more a case of batsman’s error than deception on his part. The main focus of this game, though, was giving key players a workout and Pietersen used eight bowlers including himself.England have one more warm-up match, again against a Mumbai XI, on Tuesday before heading to Rajkot for the first ODI on November 14.

The manager of the Brisbane hotel where Andrew Symonds was involved in an altercation with a patron on Sunday night has said Symonds was being harassed by the man and did nothing wrong. Cricket Australia is investigating the incident at the Normanby Hotel, where Symonds had been drinking with members of the Australian rugby league team in the hours after Australia wrapped up a 149-run win over New Zealand. The timing was poor for Symonds, who barely a week ago admitted on television to having drunk too much at times over the past year. However, Mark Lassman, the Normanby Hotel’s manager, said Symonds was drinking light beer, was not inebriated and did not start the fight.”A patron tried to hug and take pictures of Andrew Symonds, Symonds declined the invitation and after he was further harassed, the patron was required to be removed,” Lassman said on the . “The incident was not a result of Andrew Symonds doing anything wrong and it’s disappointing that sportsmen cannot socialise without being harassed.”The reported that Mitchell Johnson, Brad Haddin and Jason Krejza were also in the bar on Sunday evening but were not with Symonds at the time. The paper reported that a man, believed to be an official with the Australian armed forces, allegedly threw two punches at Symonds after being refused a photograph and witnesses said Symonds left the bar shortly afterwards.Cricket Australia’s cricket operations manager Michael Brown is investigating the incident and is expected to report back to the chief executive James Sutherland within the next day. “There were a number of our players in the bar though not with the Symonds group at the time,” Philip Pope, Cricket Australia’s public affairs manager, said on the ABC.”We just need to get a bit more time to work out exactly what did and didn’t happen in the bar. After that a report will be compiled by Michael Brown … I would imagine that the report will be completed either later today or early tomorrow.”Cricket Australia said in a statement a final recommendation would be determined after Sutherland received the report and had a chance to discuss the matter with Symonds, as well as taking feedback from the captain Ricky Ponting and the coach Tim Nielsen. Both Ponting and Nielsen had left Brisbane before the incident and Sutherland hopes to have completed those talks by Tuesday evening. In the meantime, Symonds will travel with the Australian team to Adelaide ahead of the second Test against New Zealand, which starts on Friday. The Gabba Test was Symonds’ first official appearance for Australia following his axing from the squad in August.

Everton struck gold with Romelu Lukaku

Everton have had some transfer howlers down the years, particularly when it comes to extortionately overpaying for players.

The Toffees only spent £1.7m this summer but, in years gone by, they have flashed the chequebook significantly.

Whether it was £34m on Alex Iwobi or £23.6m on Davy Klaassen, one does have to wonder sometimes what the thought process behind recruitment is at Goodison Park.

However, in forking out £28m on Romelu Lukaku back in 2014, it most certainly wasn’t a mistake.

Everton decided to gamble on the Belgian after he failed to make the grade at Chelsea first time out but they were aware he could do it in the Premier League.

Lukaku racked up 17 goals during a loan spell with West Brom and that was enough to make Bill Kenwright and co pull the trigger on a seismic deal.

After arriving, the forward became an instant hit in Merseyside, going on to score a mammoth 87 times in 166 outings.

It was at Goodison Park where Lukaku really became a prominent name in football, rolling defenders with ease and unleashing fierce drives towards goal.

The forward had and still has it all. He is quick, strong, an intelligent runner and his touch has improved a great deal since departing the blue corner of Merseyside.

However, during his time with Everton, he was still particularly raw. Lukaku was by no means the finished article but now at the age of 28, he is one of the game’s elite.

After a barnstorming few years, his value has risen astronomically. Everton were able to get £75m for his services when they sold him to Manchester United, raking in a profit of £47m.

This was evidently a masterclass from Kenwright, a man who struck gold to bring him to the club for what ended up looking like such a small fee.

Lukaku didn’t enjoy the best of spells at Manchester United but his swashbuckling style of play eventually took him to Inter Milan, where he became a Serie A champion last season.

His value rose again and now stands at £90m, just a fraction below the jaw-dropping £97.5m that Chelsea paid to re-sign him this summer.

The Belgian attacker is one of the most unique players in world football and Everton can be proud of the work they achieved with him.

They made Lukaku a consistent scorer and ultimately one who has cost £289m, making him the most expensive footballer of all time in cumulative transfer fees.

A salary of £325k-per-week also makes him the highest-paid player in the Chelsea squad. It’s fair to say that he’s done well for himself after leaving Everton.

AND in other news, Everton must unleash “exciting” rarely-seen 18 y/o, he could be another Thierry Small…

Luca Connell set for Queens Park loan

Celtic have agreed a season-long loan deal with Queen’s Park for midfielder Luca Connell, according to Mike McGrath of The Telegraph.

The Lowdown: Connell’s Celtic stay

Connell arrived in Glasgow back in 2019 from Bolton Wanderers. The midfielder, who is on £5,000 per week at Parkhead, signed a four-year deal with the Hoops.

He is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Hoops but has made a handful of appearances for the reserve side.

The Liverpool-born midfielder spent part of last season on loan with Queen’s Park, and it seems as if a return to the League One outfit is on the cards for the 20-year-old.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-13/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: McGrath’s tweet

Reliable reporter McGrath took to Twitter on Friday morning to share news regarding Connell. He claimed that an agreement has been reached over a season-long loan move for the Irishman, tweeting:

“Celtic have agreed a deal for Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Luca Connell to join Queen’s Park on a season-long loan”

The Verdict: Good news

Connell has struggled to break into the first team plans under both Neil Lennon and Ange Postecoglou, so gaining some senior experience in League One seems to be a wise move.

Spending the majority of the 2021/22 campaign with Queen’s Park will hopefully make him stronger ahead of his Parkhead return, and he’ll know exactly what to expect with the Spiders following last season’s stint.
