AAP08-Sep-2002SYDNEY, Sept 8 AAP – Former Test cricket opener Michael Slater was run out cheaply today as NSW lost a trial game to Tasmania by 190 runs.A severely under-strength NSW was dismissed for 186 in reply to Tasmania’s 376 in the two-day, 100-overs-per side match at Tunks Oval.Slater reached 11 before he was run out. Having gone from the Test side to being dropped from NSW in a horror stretch last season, he is desperate to get his career back on track. He made 42 in the Blues’ six-wicket loss to New Zealand in a trial at Wollongong last week.Left-arm chinaman bowler Shannon Tubb was the pick of the Tasmanian bowlers today with 4-47 from 15.3 overs. For NSW, Dominic Thornely top scored with 47.The Blues were out of the game when they slumped to 5-75.
Conor Hourihane would be a great signing for West Brom if he joined this summer, according to former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan.
The Lowdown: Hourihane linked with move
Valerien Ismael is looking to mastermind the Baggies’ return to the Premier League next season, following their relegation last time around.
One player the new manager has been linked with bringing in is Hourihane, who only played a bit-part role for Aston Villa last season before he was loaned out to Swansea.
The midfielder could leave Villa Park during the summer and a permanent drop down to the Championship could make perfect sense for him.
The Latest: Pundit talks up midfielder
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan waxed lyrical over the 26-time capped Republic of Ireland international, admitting plenty of clubs would benefit from having him in their team:
“He is a professional player and a professional person. Someone that’s got that fight and desire and the leadership qualities you want in any side.
“But also the quality to go along with it. He can determine the outcome of a match. We’ve seen that many, many times.
“He’s a great set-piece taker as well. He’s somebody who can drive the team forward. He looks like a bit of a talker and a leader out there on the field as well.
“If he’s not needed at Aston Villa and I’m a Championship club right now,I’m looking for somebody that could determine the result of a game.
“Somebody that players want to speak to in the changing room, a leader and an example for everybody else. I wouldn’t look any further than Hourihane.
“I think he has been exceptional at every club that he’s been at and shown that right attitude as well.”
The Verdict: Perfect summer addition
Hourihane may not arguably be good enough to make the grade in the Premier League, but he is a top-quality Championship player, as proven during 145 appearances in the competition.
He helped Villa earn promotion to the top flight back in 2018/19 and both his experience and quality in the middle of the park could be a great boost for West Brom.
Hourihane’s current contract expires next summer, so Dean Smith may believe now is the right time to let him go and if he does, West Brom should be at the front of the queue.
In other news, West Brom are believed to have approached one player regarding a summer move. Find out who it is here.

Sheffield United are rumoured to be interested in a deal to sign Manchester United midfielder James Garner on loan, according to The Sun.
What’s the story?
Garner is contracted with Manchester United until the summer of 2022, and it remains to be seen as to whether he’ll feature for their senior side anytime soon.
The midfielder spent last year’s campaign on loan with both Watford and Nottingham Forest, where he made a mixed impact with both Championship teams.
The Sun claim that Sheffield United are keen on finalising a loan agreement for Garner, who evidently made a good impression on Slavisa Jokanovic last term.
The Blades will be looking to win promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking, after their relegation from the top-flight last season.
‘Next Michael Carrick’
Football Insider have recently claimed that Manchester United are preparing to loan out Garner ahead of the new season after they’ve held contract talks with him over a long-term deal at Old Trafford.
Sheffield United are likely to be alerted to this rumoured update on the midfielder’s future, and they’ll be hoping they can beat a number of teams to land his signature this summer.
It has previously been reported that the likes of Forest were also keen on signing Garner on a temporary basis this summer, although it remains to be seen as to which club is leading the race at this stage.
Garner caught the eye with some strong performances for the Reds last season in particular, with the 20-year-old having an average Whoscored rating of 6.98 from the 2020/21 campaign, which put him top in the standings of Forest’s best performers.
He’s a solid performer in the defensive side of the game as well, with Garner averaging two tackles a game, as well as 1.7 interceptions per game.
The Manchester United youngster also has an eye for a pass, with a pass accuracy of 80.9% during the 2020/21 season, which makes for strong reading compared to the majority of his former Nottingham Forest teammates.
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær has previously likened Garner to Michael Carrick, who spent time at Old Trafford during his playing career.
“I believe he’s got the chance to have a great future, he knows we believe in him, we’ve got great faith in him as the next Michael Carrick.
“I know he’s young and I know it’s not fair on kids to compare to great players like Michael was, but he’s the same mould, he plays simple passes, plays through the lines.”
Sheff United have a number of strong options available to them in a similar position to Garner, but you would imagine that the 20-year-old could learn a considerable amount from the likes of Ollie Norwood, John Fleck and Sander Berge in the future, which would make this a fantastic signing for Jokanovic’s side if they can pull it off.
Blades supporters should be buzzing about this potential agreement with Garner, as it’d be a real statement of intent about their ambitions of returning to the Premier League this season, as he has shown he’s more than good enough to be playing for a team challenging for promotion.
The Blades are set to take on Birmingham City in their season opener, in what could potentially be a tricky test for them at Bramall Lane and hopefully for their fans, they’ll have Garner in the starting line-up.

Sheffield Wednesday will win the race for winger Josh Sims this summer, the club’s former midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview.
According to The News, Portsmouth made enquiries about signing the 24-year-old earlier in the transfer window but now face serious competition from Wednesday.
Sims is a free agent following his release from Portsmouth’s rivals Southampton. The Englishman spent last season out on loan at Doncaster Rovers, working under Wednesday manager Darren Moore during his time at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Because of that, Palmer believes the Owls are in the driving seat to secure Sims’ signature.
Speaking exclusively to FFC about Wednesday’s pursuit of the player, the ex-England international said:
“He’s worked for Darren before, so he’s enjoyed success under Darren. And I’m assuming as long as the financials are not too far apart in terms of what Portsmouth are prepared to offer him, I’m assuming Sheffield Wednesday will win the race for him.
“Darren Moore was always a very popular person as a player, a well-liked man and very genuine person. He’s shown that he’s also a good manager at West Brom, at Doncaster and I’m sure he’ll prove that at Sheffield Wednesday.”
Sims obviously has League One experience from that spell with Doncaster, as well as experience in the Premier League and the Championship, so the former Southampton man looks like he could be a good bit of business for Wednesday.

While there was frustration that yesterday’s rain caused all but one of the second round matches to be carried into what should have been a rest day, Nepal’s Mahaboob Alam was not complaining after taking 10 for 12 in 7.5 overs against Mozambique. Chasing Nepal’s 238 for 7, Mozambique managed a paltry 19 to slump to a 219-run victory. Click here for more.It was again a day for the favourites as, in addition to Nepal, there were wins for Afghanistan, USA and Jersey.Former West Indies batsman Clayton Lambert, coach of the USA team, hailed his side as they comprehensively beat Norway by 10 wickets but said that the players were not going to become over confident despite two comfortable wins. “We’re not going to underestimate anybody. We’re the ones who have played a higher level of cricket so everyone expects us to win so there is a lot of pressure on,” said Lambert. The USA bowling attack looked extremely threatening with the wickets shared around its pace attack. Khawaja Shuja, the 19-year-old right-arm fast medium bowler, was the pick with figures of 5 for 15, although Steve Pitter (2 for 24) and Imran Awan (2 for 36) were also looking dangerous with some aggressive short-pitched bowling.”Some of the short balls were the right length for the wicket and the guys did a great job of putting the balls on a correct length,” said Lambert. “Some balls bounced and Norway didn’t seem to have played against the bouncing balls a whole lot so it worked in our favour.” In reply, the USA coasted to their target in just 14.5 overs with Sushil Nadkarni (41*) and Orlando Baker (32*) looking in fine form.

Eighteen-year-old Gulbudeen Naib was the hero for Afghanistan as he took 5 for 7, including a hat-trick to close the innings, as Bahamas managed just 46 all out. And although they too suffered a batting collapse, Afghanistan secured victory by five wickets after 6.3 overs as they attempted to score quick runs to improve their run-rate, with Mario Ford claiming 3 for 5.”I was very happy to receive my Man-of-the-Match award for Afghanistan and I would like to pay tribute to my captain, team and coach who have helped me achieve this,” said Naib. “It was the first ever hat-trick for Afghanistan so I am very happy,” he added. “I am sure my friends and family back at home will be very proud.”Matt Hague produced a captain’s performance for Jersey in their eight-wicket win over Japan taking 4 for 26 with the ball and scoring 27 not out with the bat. He played his part in reducing Japan to 124 for 8 in 50 overs before helping Peter Gough, who made 59 not out, reach Jersey’s target with 15.5 overs to spare. “It was a really good performance. After yesterday when we got off to such a good start batting we wanted to get in a game today and get a win on the board,” said Hague. In the other game of the day, Singapore registered their first victory of the event with an exciting win by three wickets over Botswana. Buddhika Oshanka made 79 as Singapore reached a target of 184 with 2.3 overs to spare.
