Thrilling round of games heightens NUL promotion and relegation drama

Worcestershire Royals have gone clear at the top of the first division in the Norwich Union League with a five-wicket victory over Kent Spitfires at Canterbury

George Dobell14-Jul-2002Worcestershire Royals have gone clear at the top of the first division in the Norwich Union League with a five-wicket victory over Kent Spitfires at Canterbury. With Warwickshire Bears losing to Leicestershire Foxes it means the Royals have a four-point lead in the top division, while Gloucestershire Gladiators move to the top of the second division with victory over Middlesex Crusaders.A fine spell of bowling from both the Royals Australia-born seamers decimated the Spitfires top-order in the key match in the top division at Canterbury.Spitfires slipped to 52-5 before a brave counter-attack from Matt Walker (94) and Paul Nixon (60) saw them to a final total of 224-7. But on a good pitch, and facing Vikram Solanki, Graeme Hick and Ben Smith in fluent form, it proved an inadequate total, with the Royals coasting to victory with two overs to spare. Kent drop two places to fifth in the table.Warwickshire Bears were equal on points with the Royals before this round of games, but slipped up with a four-wicket loss against Leicestershire Foxes.Nick Knight hit a battling 86 for the Bears after struggling for form with England, but his team-mates were unable to offer much support and they were all out for 189.Phil DeFreitas followed up his 1-24 in his nine overs and run-out of the influential Ian Bell with a beautiful throw from mid-wicket, with a brisk 49 as the Foxes appeared to be galloping to victory. But the arrival of Mo Sheikh to the attack brought a mini collapse, with three wickets falling for one run.Michael Bevan isn’t a bad player to have coming in at five however, and in a left-handed partnership of 102 with Neil Burns, he saw the Foxes to victory with an unbeaten 66 and helped push them away from the relegation area.An injury ravaged Somerset Sabres attack (Caddick, Johnson, Rose, Francis, Tucker and Trego are all out, as well as skipper Jamie Cox) was put to the sword by Yorkshire Phoenix at Scarborough. Sabres were forced to re-sign ex-Yorkshire and England seamer Paul Jarvis, who celebrated his 37th birthday a couple of weeks ago and retired at the end of the 2000 season, but it did them little good.Phoenix’s batsmen posted a challenging 283-9, with Craig White’s 64 and Anthony McGrath’s 59 providing the main contributions.Poor Steffan Jones! Last week Worcestershire Royals hit him for 80 from nine overs, and it was little better today, as he conceded another 72.The Sabres never threatened in reply. Blackwell (30 in 19 balls) and Burns (49 in 40) flourished briefly, but an incisive spell from Craig White (5-19) ripped out their middle order, and they fell 135 runs short of their target. It will take a great effort if they are to avoid relegation now. Phoenix remain in secure mid-table.Elsewhere in the top division, Glamorgan Dragons travelled to Trent Bridge to play Nottinghamshire Outlaws. The match was dominated by a stand of 117 for the third wicket between David Hemp (55*) and Matthew Maynard (80* in 69 balls) as the Dragons made light of a victory target of 221, crossing the line in just the 37th over.Earlier, none of the Outlaws batsmen had managed to progress beyond 39, with Mike Kasprowicz taking 3-39. They remain deep in relegation trouble, while the Dragons, with games in hand, sustain their title dream. In the second division Mark Alleyne led the way for Gloucestershire Gladiators against Middlesex Crusaders at Southgate as his side hit a formidable 272-7. The former England all-rounder hit 93 in 83 balls, after Craig Spearman had struck a quick-fire 78, with Alex Gidman weighing in with a quick 48.An opening spell from James Averis brought three wickets when the Crusaders began their reply, with none of the batsmen able to flourish. They eventually fell short by 78 runs, with Paul Weekes unbeaten 53 receiving scant support. The Gladiators go top of the second division table, while the Crusaders are left trying to avoid the wooden spoon.Elsewhere, in what was, perhaps, the match of the day, Lancashire Lightning just sneaked home by one wicket against Derbyshire Scorpions at Blackpool.Kyle Hogg, who has just celebrated his 19th birthday and Peter Martin restricted the visitors to just 169 in their innings, thanks mainly to Steve Selwood, who hit 52 to help revive the Scorpions innings from 102-7.But when Lightning slipped to 82-6 in reply the Scorpions looked to be in pole position. David Byas stood firm with 78, however, adding 55 for the seventh wicket with Gary Yates to revive Lightning’s hopes. But when he fell with the score on 137 and Yates followed shortly afterwards, the game swung back in the Scorpions favour.Hogg helped add a further 23 in partnership with John Wood, but when he fell with three still needed, it was a breathless Stanley Park that witnessed Martin’s match-winning boundary from his first ball.Essex Eagles enjoyed a good start to their encounter with Hampshire Hawks at Southend, with Dakin and Robinson posting 48 for the first wicket. But the hosts then fell away, with Robinson and Flower falling to run outs, and Irani – just back from England duty – falling for a duck.A half-century from Aftab Habib carried them to a respectable 200, before Neil Johnson, opening for the Hawks struck a fine 83 to take his side to the verge of victory. But a late wobble saw them subside from 177-2 to 195-8, with James Middlebrook’s off-spin (4-33) proving crucial, and limiting the Hawks to just three off a last over in which they required nine. The Eagles move ahead of the Hawks in the promotion race, but with both teams enjoying a game or two in hand on their promotion rivals, they still have plenty to play for.Sussex Sharks clashed with Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Hove, with the home team desperate to lift themselves off the foot of the second division. The visitors won the toss and put the Sharks in, and though several of their batsmen made starts, none could progress beyond Chris Adams’ 41 in their final total of 185-6.The Steelbacks were progressing smoothly, but the wheels came off with the loss of four wickets with the score on 54. They struggled to come to terms with the setback and finally subsided to 147 all out, and a 38-run loss. This provided the Sharks with just the second win of their campaign, while the Steelbacks have done their promotion prospects no good at all.

'Patron has set us along the road to stay' says Anderson after Ondaatje generosity

Somerset County Cricket Club patron Christopher Ondaatje has given the membership their strongest hint yet that the club may remain at their town centre location by helping them to purchase the Barnicotts building and land that adjoin the County

Richard Walsh19-Jul-2002Somerset County Cricket Club patron Christopher Ondaatje has given the membership their strongest hint yet that the club may remain at their town centre location by helping them to purchase the Barnicotts building and land that adjoin the County Ground, for £600,000.Chief executive Peter Anderson said: "Mr Ondaatje has made the purchase possible by making an interest free loan to the club."The Sri Lankan born financier has been a generous benefactor to the club said: "I am very pleased to help the club in this way. Somerset CCC is a very important and fantastic part of Somerset in particular and the South West in general. If this purchase helps the club to remain in it’s traditional home I am sure all members and supporters will be thrilled."Over the last few years there has been considerable debate regarding the future of the club’s town centre site, where they have been based since 1875, and the prospect of a relocation to an out of town site has received a lukewarm reception from the majority of the clubs 7000 members. This move by the club will be welcomed by members, and everyone who has grown up knowing the County Ground as an important part of the fabric Taunton town centre.Mr Anderson is keen to see the club become an integral part of the town’s redevelopment and over the last few months has given evidence to the Taunton Deane Planning Enquiry that is looking into the development of the town up 2011.The Somerset boss has also given evidence to the Vision Commission for Taunton, in which he has outlined the club’s hopes to dovetail their expansion with any future development plans for the adjoining Firepool and Cattle Market areas.Mr Anderson continues: "Our base line is to establish the feasibility of selling and moving, which is why we undertook the expensive strategy of giving evidence before the Planning Inspector. Since doing so we have received several enquiries from possible development partners."Despite the purchase of Barnicott’s, the future of the club on the present site is far from assured. The chief concludes: "If anything happens between now and the planning decision at the end of the year which persuades us to stay we shall do so. Our Patron has certainly set us along the road to stay, but neither he nor the Club can achieve that alone. Whatever else, the acquisition of Barnicotts will add overall value to our site should we wish to sell and move."Members of the club and all Somerset cricket followers will no doubt be hoping that the outcomes from the two planning groups will lend their support to the club remaining within Taunton town centre and help them in redeveloping their present site.

Pundit makes key Ryan Kent claim

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes the Whites will continue in their attempts to sign Rangers winger Ryan Kent this summer.

The Lowdown: Leeds show Kent interest

Marcelo Bielsa is believed to be interested in signing the former Liverpool man, with Leeds tipped to sign him a number of times in recent months as well as a rejected bid last summer.

Kent has been a key player for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side, scoring eight goals and registering seven assists in last season’s title-winning campaign, not to mention being hailed as ‘sensational’ by his manager.

The Latest: Whelan makes bold call

While the Englishman is yet to agree a move to Leeds, Whelan, who recently found new employment at Elland Road helping in the community, told Football Insider that his club will persist in their interest in the wide man:

“This has been rumbling on now for what, three years?

“Bielsa, Leeds, they’re not going anywhere. They still want this man to be playing for Leeds United. He’s had three more years of experience under his belt at Rangers.

“He’s been under a good manager and in a successful team, which will only bring a bit more confidence to the player. He’ll have that experience you need in big games and playing in front of fans.

“He is a special player, there’s no doubt about that. That’s the reason why Steven Gerrard went out there to bring him in. He wasn’t just picking Ryan Kent because he was available.

“He picked him because he was going to improve the team that he was managing. No different to Marcelo Bielsa. We’ve got great wingers there.

“I do believe there’s a place up (for grabs) because I don’t think Helder Costa has been doing it for me. I do believe we need another winger there to just test the waters of the other players. See how they react by putting that competition directly in their faces.

“He could be one that can play a number 10, out on the wings, in the central midfield area. A player that’s versatile. That versatility that he brings to the team could put him in a number of positions in that forward line.”

The Verdict: Ideal squad player

Kent may still be unproven in the Premier League, which does make a potential move risky, but he could be an ideal squad addition ahead of next season.

Raphinha and Jack Harrison could do with more competition and a chance to rest and rotate, in order to keep them on their toes, and the Rangers man’s pace, directness and work rate could all suit Bielsa’s style.

While Kent is most known for his on-the-ball ability, he still managed to average 0.8 tackles and 0.6 interceptions per game in the Scottish Premiership last season, showing he also has the ability to press from the front in Bielsa’s system.

The importance of being earnest

Ajit Bhalchandra Agarkar did not gift the world a new battingphilosophy with his memorable hundred at Lord’s on Monday

Rajesh Kumar31-Jul-2002Ajit Bhalchandra Agarkar did not gift the world a new battingphilosophy with his memorable hundred at Lord’s on Monday. He onlyreiterated the importance of being earnest, a virtue last stated withwitty originality by the peerless Oscar Wilde.
Ajit Agarkar against all bowlers – India 2nd innings at Lord’s
© CricInfoThe 24-year-old talented chose his moment well. Hissupreme cricketing achievement after all came on a day when thereputation of India’s most famous dream factory – Mumbai’s ownBollywood – took another beating after transcripts of tapedconversations revealed fresh evidence of its connections with theunderworld. On the field at Lord’s, meanwhile, India were at thereceiving end of what was threatening to turn into a demoralisingthrashing. But far from showing any signs of agitation in the midst of thisturbulence, an earnest Agarkar, showing unstinting commitment, kepthis head for once and let the strokes flow. After arriving at thebatting crease on the fourth evening, he made a cautious start, scoring only six runs off his first 35 balls. But the return of newboy Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff to the bowling crease foundAgarkar changing gears, one searing cut shot and a series of copybookdrives taking him to within earshot of senior partner VVS Laxman. From then on, these were to be his favourite shots. Taking a distinctliking to the English bowlers and their short-of-a-length deliveries,he scored as many as 38 runs in the region between point and thirdman. Jones was the main culprit as far as England were concerned, conceding as many as 15 of these runs. Drives and pick-up shotsbetween mid-off and mid-wicket for their part yielded 42 runs, speaking eloquently about Agarkar’s willingness to hit the ball -often over the infield – when it was up to be hit.As much as his wagon-wheel speaks about his strokes, it also speaksabout where England erred in their bowling on Monday. On a belter of abatting wicket that actually got flatter as the game progressed, bowling short of a length on the fifth day was simply begging to behit. The bounce was even and true, and Agarkar, with his quick eye, could do no wrong under such circumstances.England erred in line as well. Many of the deliveries bowled toAgarkar were not only short but also outside the off-stump, giving thebatsman room to free his arms and play his strokes. Bowling closer tothe batsman’s body may have seen an intended cut fly to slip or chopthe ball onto the stumps, but it was not to be, and the English attackwas accordingly flayed. The shots were all played with lovely timing and considerable elan -facets of Agarkar’s batting that came to the fore in his famous 21-ball 50 against Zimbabwe at Rajkot in December 2000. But sadly beforeSunday, this was all lost upon a Test arena that only knew him as abatsman with a famous penchant for ducks. His invigorating hundred atstarchy Lord’s was timely penitence for the gross injustice that hehad done to his undoubted batting talents on the big stage until now.

Newcastle transfer update on Cajuste

Newcastle United are reportedly prepared to make a bid to sign defensive midfielder Jens Cajuste in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Cajuste a prospect

Cajuste is certainly one of the rising stars in Sweden, as Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig described him as ‘excellent’ in an impressive display for FC Midtjylland against Brondby in a game in the Danish Superliga back in April, and went on to claim that he is a ‘great talent’.

The six-foot-one colossus was a key player for his team in the 2020/21 season, playing in no fewer than 39 games in total over all competitions, and has even made five senior appearances for his country despite being just 21 years of age (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Cajuste eyed

As per SportExpressen, the St. James’ Park faithful, as well as Wolves, Leeds United and Crystal Palace, have all shown ‘concrete interest’ in signing Cajuste.

Rennes have already placed a bid for his signature, but the North East club are also prepared to make an offer of their own and the French outfit are reportedly struggling to finance a bid.

The Verdict: Sign

It would not hurt the Tyneside club one bit to add some depth to Steve Bruce’s squad, and Cajuste could provide just that.

The defensive midfield player would certainly add to the options in the middle of the park, and may find it easy to settle in with international teammate Emil Krafth already at the Magpies.

Nonetheless, he is a player for the future rather than the here and now, and if it does not quite work out with the Toon, then they could potentially sell him on for a nice profit down the line considering he is not yet anywhere close to his prime.

Liberado!
