If Nuno Espirito Santo left Wolves, it would leave a great big hole at Molineux.

The Portuguese manager has been such a huge part of the Old Gold’s development in the last few years, guiding them from the Championship to European football.

They are now an established Premier League club and Nuno has consequently caught the interest of Tottenham.

On the chalkboard

This isn’t the first time that their manager has been coveted by clubs elsewhere – Arsenal were chasing the Wolves boss after they sacked Unai Emery in 2019.

However, after Jose Mourinho was sacked by Spurs, he is now an option for the Lilywhites. Wolves are well aware of how sought-after their manager is and they have duly begun to draw up contingency plans.

The Daily Mail reported this week that they were considering a list of candidates in case Nuno departs in the coming months.

The report revealed three names the Midlands outfit had already considered contacting – Vitor Pereira, Rui Faria and Bruno Lage.

The latter is someone who Jeff Shi has admired for the best part of two years, and it’s clear to see why – he develops talent for the future.

Silva to become a star?

When Lage was in charge of Benfica, he delved into the youth ranks of the Liga NOS outfit to give them a bigger and better squad.

In doing so, he uncovered the likes of Ruben Dias, Florentino Luis and Gedson Fernandes. He guided the Lisbon giants to a league title in 2018/19, sparking a “spectacular” revival at the Estadio da Luz.

However, Lage’s biggest success story to date has to be the effervescent Joao Felix. It was under the 44-year-old that the current Atletico Madrid maestro made a proper breakthrough in Portugal and it’s under Lage that he has flourished the most so far in his career.

Back in his homeland, the attacking midfielder racked up 17 goals and ten assists in just 29 outings with Lage at the helm. Felix was only a teenager at the time but that form earned him a move to Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £113m – the fifth-most expensive transfer in history.

It’s evident that Lage is good at working with young players, so his potential arrival at Molineux could be game-changing for a certain Fabio Silva.

The 18-year-old set Wolves back £35.6m last summer but he’s had a pretty disastrous spell in England so far. Silva has scored just three goals all season and, rather than his football catching the eye, it’s his luscious locks which have been a source of debate.

He has scored and assisted a crucial goal for Adama Traore this month as the teenager finally begins to show signs of his high potential, but Nuno is yet to really extract the very best from him.

That could be different with Lage in the dugout. He had immense success with Dias before his move to Manchester City and turned Felix into a world phenomenon. Like Silva, the Atletico Madrid star was a bushy-haired prodigy before Lage got to develop his game.

It would be a very exciting time for the youngster if Shi hires the former Benfica manager as Nuno’s eventual successor.

Newcastle have been named as one of a number of Premier League clubs monitoring Norwich starlet Max Aarons.

What’s the story?

The England under-21 international has just helped the Canaries to promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, and it’s now being reported that he could well be playing his final season at the club.

90min claimed that Steve Bruce’s side have “asked to be kept informed of his situation ahead of this summer”, but will face significant competition from the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Everton and West Ham among others.

The report added that Norwich currently value him at £30m.

Could shine in the Premier League

Given that he already has a season of Premier League football under his belt with Norwich last year, Aarons looks ready to make a real step-up this summer.

Norwich manager Daniel Farke has raved about the youngster this season, saying: “Max is outstanding in many topics. I can’t praise him enough for what he has done since his first appearance. You watch some of our games now and the opponents go man-for-man on him. That is crazy for a player who is a full-back but it says a lot about his reputation. He is just a special player and he has an unbelievable future.”

The Magpies could desperately do with some young talent to really freshen up the squad, which is the fifth-oldest in the Premier League at an average age of 28, and 21-year-old Aarons seems to fit the bill perfectly.

Signings like him could provide a real breath of fresh air at St James’ Park and help kick-start a new, more exciting era at the club; and given the level of competition for him, it really would be a major statement of intent if Newcastle could convince him to join the Magpies.

Manchester City fans appear eager to sign Yves Bissouma after the Citizens were linked with a move for the Brighton midfielder.

The Citizens have enjoyed a fantastic campaign this term as they close in on the Premier League title and will face Chelsea in the Champions League final on May 29th. Brazil international and Etihad fan favourite Fernandinho has played his part in that success, appearing 33 times in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

However, the midfielder is now 36 years of age and cannot go on forever. In an attempt to prepare for the future, the Citizens are said to be interested in Bissouma, with the club believed to be plotting a £30m move (The Daily Star). Pep Guardiola is confident about completing the signing of the 24-year-old, who has missed just two games in the Premier League this term.

Alan Hutton has dropped a big claim on the potential takeover of Newcastle United after a development involving Mike Ashley emerged.

The Lowdown: Ashley seeks to claim damages

As shared in documents that were made available to the public, Ashley has launched a claim accusing the Premier League of anti-competitive behaviour in their decision-making process on the failed deal between him and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group.

The claim for damages is now another legal case against the English top flight on top of the pending arbitration case hearing between the St. James’ Park faithful and the PL relating to the Owners and Directors Test.

The Latest: Ashley is desperate

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton, who is now a pundit after making numerous appearances in the top flight for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, has claimed that Ashley is showing signs of desperation by trying to claim back as much money as possible from the failed bid:

“A little bit of desperation. He’s looking to get money back off the league and all this.

“I think as a fan you’d just be sitting there thinking: ‘Oh, for God’s sake.’ It’s getting annoying now. I think if they can get this takeover over the line, whoever it may be, it would be best for everyone.

“It just leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. It’s rearing its ugly head always with Mike Ashley. They seem to be standing still at the moment. Mike Ashley just seems to be trying to squeeze every penny out from every angle possible.

“It must be frustrating for the fans but hopefully they can get it over the line, one way or another. Whether the league helps them out or not, we’ll have to wait and see.”

The Verdict: Potential worry for takeover

The fact that Ashley is trying to claim money back from the failed takeover suggests that he may not be confident with the result of his legal case against the league – if the takeover is not going to go through it would be huge hit to his finances, which could indeed lead to this.

This could be a worry for the Toon Army given Ashley’s previous showings of frugalness in the transfer market – the longer this uncertainty drags on, the more excuses he has not to spend anything to improve the side this summer.

Everyone on Tyneside is surely hoping for a positive result that can eventually lead to a path being cleared for the takeover as soon as possible.
