Capitão do Santos diz conhecer o Palmeiras: 'Vamos criar dificuldades'

Completamente superado. Sem ressentimentos. Faz parte do passado.

Celtic can axe Griffiths by signing Joseph

Leigh Griffiths hasn’t had the easiest of few years in a Celtic shirt.

During the 2018/19 campaign, the striker played just 11 times in the league because of issues surrounding his personal life.

The Scot then returned to the side once Neil Lennon took over from Brendan Rodgers but with Odsonne Edouard such a dominant force in attack, he has always played second fiddle. Last season, he still scored 12 goals but he certainly wasn’t first choice.

Therefore, when Albian Ajeti arrived from West Ham in the summer, he will have been fearful again. Griffiths clearly wasn’t someone Lennon could rely on and after the Swiss scored five goals in his first ten outings, things didn’t look good for the 30-year-old.

Yet, the Celtic stalwart has fought back well and has now scored three in his last five. During that time, he’s also started four games.

His start against Ross County just before Christmas was remarkably his first since March – pre-Covid – so it’s been a welcome return to form.

However, just as he sustains himself in the team again, is the ageing forward now in trouble? Quite possibly.

That’s because Celtic are still in the hunt for a new forward, one of which is young Wigan prodigy Kyle Joseph. Chased by Tottenham and Rangers, as well as the Hoops, he looks a force to be reckoned with despite his minimal experience.

Joseph has netted four times in League One this term, a tally that included a wonderful hat-trick against Burton in his last game.

Speaking about the 19-year-old afterwards, Wigan manager Leam Richardson commented: “Kyle is on top of the world at the moment. The only disappointment for him and for us is that it wasn’t in front of 30,000 people here. He’ll remember that moment for the rest of his life.

“He’s been getting plaudits for a while now and as long as he keeps grounded and keeps working hard through the week like he does, he’ll have a very good career.”

Given his age, it’s encouraging that Joseph gets in such promising areas, but vitally for the teenager if he does come to Scotland, he offers a quality that Griffiths doesn’t – the ability to win headers.

So far this term, Joseph has won 2.3 aerial duels per game compared to just 0.8 from Griffiths. Of course, the latter is an established international footballer, but you only need to look at the way Albian Ajeti quickly jumped ahead of him in the pecking order when he first signed.

It’s possible the same would happen if the £300-per-week Joseph signs. He’s already got first-team football under his belt and he’s got goals to show for it.

If Lennon can fight off the competition to bring him to Parkhead, it would be an impressive capture. Unfortunately for Griffiths, however, it was may just give the Northern Irishman an excuse to axe him once and for all.

AND in other news, Celtic must swoop for £8k-p/w demon with “physical robustness”, he’s shades of Edouard…

Bielsa can find Klich’s heir by signing Sean McGurk

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has claimed that Leeds United remain interested in signing Wigan prospect Sean McGurk.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent months had suggested Marcelo Bielsa’s side were eyeing up a move for the 17-year-old, who has yet to make a single competitive appearance for the first-team at Wigan.

And, speaking on The Phil Hay Show, the journalist said: “The incomings are quiet, and that was what we expected. I never rule out academy signings at Leeds, because they seem to be recruiting on that front all the time.

“McGurk, the youngster over at Wigan, again, that you mentioned is somebody Leeds are still interested in.”

Bielsa’s next Klich

At 17, McGurk is hardly going to come in and be a hit in the first-team straight away, but his performances at youth level with Wigan point to someone who could make a real mark in the future.

Speaking back in February 2020, the Latics’ U18s coach, Peter Murphy, said: “Sean (McGurk) was brilliant, he’s been amazing. He had a slow start to his scholarship with an injury in the summer, but since he’s been fit, he’s got himself into the team and stayed there. He’s so effective in games, he sets things up, he scores goals and he’ll always do that because of his ability.”

Able to play in the centre of the park or even out wide on the right, McGurk has shown flashes of his immense potential, netting in back-to-back games in the FA Youth Cup last season, including against Manchester United.

The 17-year-old could be the man Bielsa looks at as being Mateusz Klich’s long-term successor at Elland Road. The Poland international, who turns 31 later this year, has been a real goal threat from midfield for Leeds over the past couple of seasons, registering 11 goal contributions last season, and a whopping 20 the year before.

In McGurk, Bielsa could find something similar, just like his coach Murphy said. And when you think of how disappointing summer signing Rodrigo has been – he’s scored just three times in 17 games – it may not be too long before the now Wigan starlet makes his mark on the first-team and even goes on to overtake the Spaniard.

What Do Arsenal Need In The Summer Transfer Window In Terms Of The Midfield?

As the midpoint of the Premier League season approaches, it’s important that clubs across the division look forward to the summer as the biggest transfer window of the season opens. As time has passed, player recruitment has become integral to a club’s success and it’s in this area where Arsenal have appeared to struggle for the last few seasons. The backroom staff have undergone several changes, even more so than the on-pitch personnel, which has left the club in a poor place. Here’s what’s needed to take the club forward in the midfield areas.

The likes of Xhaka and Partey are good defensively but there’s a distinct lack of a creative spark to get the ball rolling from counter-attacks. Welsh maestro Aaron Ramsey was the key to unlocking defences for most of his tenure before leaving on a free to do the exact same at Italian giants Juventus. Since then, the club has looked stale when handling the ball in those central areas, apart from the odd fancy flicks and runs from the on-loan Spaniard Dani Ceballos. Mesut Özil would have been the man to help with this if Arteta hadn’t have frozen him out and just let him run his mega-contract down from afar.

Julian Brandt would be an interesting option to sort this crisis out; with years of Bundesliga and European football under his belt for the likes of Dortmund and Leverkusen, it could be said that Brandt is a natural fit into the Arsenal mould. He’s quick, mobile and can certainly dribble and finish, and is thought of as a young heir to the Marco Reus throne by some.

The Gunners were, of course, in for Lyon’s midfield orchestrator Houssem Aouar and the move in the last summer transfer window looked promising. Aouar has all the Ramsey-like qualities that Arsenal would need in a midfielder; he’s a true box-to-box with good stamina and real technical quality, as has been stated by the likes of Pep Guardiola. Given that the last Lyon to Arsenal transfer was Alexandre Lacazette who was, at the time, another French superstar, the move for Aouar certainly has great potential.

Signings such as Brandt and Aouar could help Arsenal push up the table and take the team back to where they once were for several consecutive years, namely within the Champions League places. Currently, they are 14/1 in the football betting on Space Casino to finish in the top four, so major signings are needed if they want to bridge that significant gap. However, they may find it tough to attract top talents without the incentive of Champions League football, so a significant improvement is needed to make sure they are at least pushing for those places. The Europa League could be key for them this season due to the Champions League spot it provides for the winner.

For Arsenal, the summer transfer window is going to be the most integral time to do some worthwhile business. If the board and Arteta can get their act together and spend wisely, then the right business could propel the club into the Champions League for the first time in several years. The positions and usefulness of some personnel such as Willian does need to be considered and if a fire sale occurs in order to fund some big moves, then it could be the best thing they do all season.

Kane, Pogba nominated for PL Fan award

It may be a new year but some things don’t change – including the GIVEMESPORT Fans’ Player of the Month awards, which are going full steam ahead into 2021.

And there’s plenty to mull over in the new year’s first edition with January being a typically strange month in the Premier League as Manchester United squandered top spot by losing at home to rock-bottom Sheffield United and reigning champions Liverpool incredibly went their first three games without scoring a goal.

Throw in Chelsea’s decision to dismiss Frank Lampard, West Ham doing their best impression of The Invincibles and relegation-threatened Brighton quietly winning the sixth-most points of any Premier League side, and January was a mad-cap start to 2021 in the top flight.

But let’s forget about clubs for a moment and consider some of the individual driving forces behind them. Here, we take a look at the six Premier League players who impressed us so much that they’ve earned nominations for the GIVEMESPORT Fans’ Player of the Month award.

All stats courtesy of Whoscored.

The Goalkeepers Nominee: Nick Pope

Are we being a bit harsh on Manchester City’s Ederson here? Perhaps – it’s not very often a goalkeeper will keep five clean sheets in as many games and go a whole calendar month without conceding a goal.

But having only actually faced seven shots on target in that time, you have to question how much of that was really down to the Brazil international, compared to how much was owed to Pep Guardiola’s side winning five games against considerably lesser teams in dominant fashion. Compare that to Burnley’s Nick Pope.

Now, there’s something to be said for Burnley’s uber-deep, ultra-organised low block making things as simple as possible for whoever’s between their sticks, but you still have to make the saves and Pope did that an incredible 29 times throughout January – including six saves to secure the Clarets’ only clean sheet of the month in a shock 1-0 win at Anfield.

Honourable mentions go to Emi Martinez, Brighton’s new No.1 Robert Sanchez, Vicente Guaita and Bernd Leno, who all had a decent balance between clean sheets and saves last month. Pope, however, was in a league of his own.

The Defenders Nominee: Craig Dawson

Considering summer loan signing Craig Dawson hadn’t even made his Premier League debut for West Ham until the last week of December, it’s quite incredible that he was a crucial part of the Irons’ four-game winning run in January which was only ended by reigning champions Liverpool.

Adding even more aerial presence to David Moyes’ already monstrous side, Dawson was pivotal in securing 1-0 victories over Everton and Burnley, while he scored what proved to be the winner against Crystal Palace and even netted a consolation goal against the Reds.

It was a fine month for Aston Villa’s Matt Targett as well, grabbing an assist against Burnley while producing an incredible nine tackles in a clean sheet win over Southampton, while Manchester United’s Luke Shaw has been nothing short of superb of late with 14 key passes in January alone, and Manchester City’s Ruben Dias continues to impress with his authoritative consistency.

Nonetheless, Dawson went from merely making up the numbers to being one of the first names on West Ham’s team sheet in the course of a single calendar month, and that deserves recognition in the form of a nomination.

The Midfielders Nominees: Ilkay Gundogan, Paul Pogba, Bukayo Saka

In truth, January’s nominees list could’ve been entirely devoted to midfielders, such was their collective impressiveness throughout January.

Jack Grealish once again shone with one goal and three assists, Leicester City pair James Maddison and Harvey Barnes notched up a whopping eight goal involvements between them, Tomas Soucek followed up last month’s nomination with three strikes and Matheus Pereira has almost single-handedly kept West Brom from disappearing into oblivion.

Nonetheless, three midfielders stood out most for slightly different reasons. First up is Ilkay Gundogan, who scored the most goals of any Premier League player throughout January with five in six games, many being absolute beauties.

Paul Pogba, meanwhile, has quite simply started playing like Paul Pogba again, and when the French World Cup winner’s in top form he’s without question one of the best central midfielders around. And finally we have Bukayo Saka, who might well be Europe’s most in-form teenager at this moment in time.

The Arsenal youngster’s influence seems to only be growing by the game and last month saw him net three times, including a goal as well as an assist in a 3-1 away in over Southampton. It’s incredible to think he doesn’t turn 20 until September.

The Strikers Nominee: Harry Kane

In stark contrast to midfielders, the Premier League’s striker cabal really didn’t give much to write home about at the start of the year. Of course it would be far too simplistic to exclusively determine a forward’s influence by their output, but goals are the main factor strikers are inevitably judged on and last month, only two in the Premier League actually scored more than twice.

Perhaps we should be giving a bit more credit to Alexandre Lacazette then, having netted three times and grabbed one assist, but with all four of his goal involvements coming in just two games, it wasn’t exactly a month of consistent brilliance from Arsenal’s French front-man.

So, almost by default, we can’t really look beyond Harry Kane here because, let’s face it, he’s definitely the best striker in the Premier League right now and arguably the best in the world. January was another solid month for him, scoring in three consecutive games and even looking decent against Liverpool until being forced off with a double injury.

Tellingly, Spurs lost that game 3-1 in Kane’s absence and couldn’t even score without him against lowly Brighton, which serves as a timely reminder of just how massive an influence the England captain is in north London.
