Former Premier League manager Alex McLeish has tipped Barry Douglas to be a success at Watford if he moves to Vicarage Road this week.

It has proven to be a busy summer at Elland Road in terms of transfer business with a large number of new faces arriving through the doors of the Yorkshire club.

Head coach Marcelo Bielsa has improved his squad options but with the domestic transfer window still open until Friday (October 16), a number of fringe players could potentially leave.

The likes of Gaetano Berardi left the club this summer and it is now looking like defender Douglas could be set for an exit too.

A whole host of clubs have been labelled with interest in the Scottish left-back, and former Premier League club Watford have now emerged as front runners in the race to sign the defender this week.

Douglas receives McLeish backing to make Watford move

With Football Insider claiming Watford’s interest, former Aston Villa boss McLeish has given his thoughts on whether or not the former Wolves defender would make an impact at the Championship club.

“Watford aren’t in the Premier League, they’ll be smarting the fact that they were relegated, they will feel like they have something to prove,” McLeish told Football Insider.

“Troy Deeney, etcetera, in that dressing room will be cracking the whip and telling the other players in that dressing room that we have to get back to the Premier League.

“To do that in the Championship, there has to be a massive level of consistency and Douglas has got that experience. If Watford go for him then you would think he would add to the squad.”

Douglas has made 44 appearances for the Whites thus far.

The correct move for Douglas to gain sufficient playing time

Stuart Dallas has promoted himself as the number one choice at left-back in Bielsa’s side over the last 12 months and one can’t really see Douglas getting many chances to show his worth with Ezgjan Alioski there as a versatile option too.

With a whole host of defensive options available to him this season, Bielsa is fully equipped for the competition and threat of the Premier League, having the likes of Luke Ayling, Liam Cooper, Pascal Struijk, Robin Koch, and of course Alioski, who have all been performing well over pre-season and over the start of the new campaign so far.

Douglas, will no doubt be eagerly anticipating Friday’s deadline day as he looks to start a potential new chapter in his career, but a move to Watford would be a superb one for the defender, especially given their ambition to bounce back and gain promotion back to England’s top flight.

فجرت صحيفة “ذا أثلتيك” الأمريكية مفاجأة بشأن مدة غياب ثلاثي الفريق الأول لكرة القدم بنادي ليفربول، محمد صلاح وساديو ماني ونابي كيتا، عن مباريات الريدز بسبب بطولة كأس أمم إفريقيا 2021.

وتقُام بطولة كأس أمم إفريقيا في الكاميرون خلال الفترة من 9 يناير إلى 6 فبراير عام 2022 بعد تأجيلها لمدة عام بسبب انتشار فيروس كورونا وعدم الانتهاء من التصفيات في الوقت المحدد سابقًا.

وبحسب الصحيفة الشهيرة، قد يترك محمد صلاح وساديو ماني ليفربول في يوم 27 ديسمبر المقبل، ويغيب عن 8 مباريات، عبارة عن 6 في الدوري الإنجليزي، ومباراتين في كأس الاتحاد الإنجليزي إذا استمروا في منافسات كأس أمم إفريقيا حتى نهاية البطولة.

وتشير الصحيفة إلى أنه من سيتم اختياره في قوائم منتخبات بلدهم المشاركة في كأس أمم إفريقيا من الممكن أن يغادروا إنجلترا بعد مباريات “البوكسينج داي” في الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز، ولن يعودوا حتى الأسبوع الثاني من فبراير.

وتنص قواعد الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم “فيفا” على أنه يجب إطلاق سراح اللاعبين للسفر إلى منتخبات بلادهم لتمثيله في البطولات القارية المعتمد في موعد لا يتجاوز صباح يوم الإثنين من الأسبوع الذي يسبق الأسبوع الذي تبدأ في البطولة ذات الصلة.

وتقام المباراة الافتتاحية لبطولة كأس أمم إفريقيا في 9 يناير بين الكاميرون (المضيف) مع بوركينا فاسو، وبالتالي يجب أن يغادر اللاعبين فرقهم يوم 27 ديسمبر.

ولكن يمكن أن تتوصل الفرق الإنجليزية مع الاتحادات المحلية لتلك الدول لحل وسط يسمح بمغادرة اللاعبين في موعد متأخر قليلًا، ومن الممكن أن يكون ذلك في 3 يناير، وهو موعد مقبول وفقًا للقواعد واللوائح.

Leeds United seem to still be in the market for one more signing.

Todd Cantwell has been the name that has consistently cropped up over the past two weeks, and with Louie Sibley also being mentioned, it is quite clear that Leeds think they need a new attacking midfielder.

However, Leeds may want to reconsider their transfer stance, especially after the eye-watering fee Norwich want for Cantwell was revealed.

The Canaries apparently want £25m for their talisman, and although he is probably one of the best attacking midfield options available to Leeds at the moment due to the fact they can only buy players from the EFL, they shouldn’t be spending that much on a man who has just one Premier League season under his belt.

Fortunately, Leeds do have another option.

The pause in the football calendar earlier this year has led to the 2020/21 season starting later than anyone ever anticipated, and there are only 77 days between the end of this domestic window and the start of the January window, and that 11-week spell could be a huge blessing for Leeds.

United have a squad strong enough to tide them over until January, after all, they have seven points from their first four games this term, and rather than splashing out on Cantwell, they should take stock and use the 77-day gap between the transfer windows to sniff out a bargain in the same position who could prove to be even better than Cantwell for a cheaper fee.

January isn’t far away and if Leeds get to winter and feel that they still need a new attacking midfielder their options will be a lot more varied than they are right now as they will once again be able to operate in the international market, while also having the option of taking players from other Premier League sides.

Victor Orta would be better off saving Andrea Radrizzani £25m and re-assessing the situation in January.

What was the word?

During the 2016 summer transfer window, Spurs lodged a £12m bid for Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha but it was quickly rebuffed by Steve Parish, who dubbed the offer “ridiculous” to talkSPORT, via the Guardian.

It’s not the first time that the Lilywhites have had to opportunity to secure the enigmatic forward after ex-Spurs scout David Webb spotted Zaham, aged just ten, playing for Whitehorse Wanderers in west Croydon.

“I think he scored four or five goals. We invited him in for a six-week trial and for the first five he didn’t play. The coach couldn’t get him to do the sessions properly because he wasn’t used to it. He’s not going to come in and pick up structured training sessions at 10. He won’t understand. What he understands is being on a football pitch. He played against Tottenham’s academy and scored all six goals.”

And then again in 2018, Zaha was hoping that a move to N17 would come to fruition but Spurs balked at the Eagles’ £70m asking price, as per The Times.

One that got away?

During a weekend in which Spurs did not feature – they play Burnley tomorrow night instead – Zaha excelled as Palace’s star man against Fulham, playing a part in both goals in their 2-1 victory.

The 27-year-old slipped in Jairo Riedewald with a sublime through ball within the first eight minutes for the opener before tapping home the easiest of finishes courtesy of Michy Batshuayi picking him out.

Per SofaScore, Zaha duly took home a match-high rating of 8.8 after recording seven dribbles, four key passes and an 82% passing accuracy from 22 attempts.

After the match, Roy Hodgson lauded his talisman, he said: “He reminds us that when he’s on top of his game he’s a very hard player to stop. He’s an excellent player and that’s what he’s capable of doing. He deserves all the praise he’s going to get.”

Back in 2016, Parish revealed that Pochettino thought the Ivorian international could be the “next [Cristiano] Ronaldo” – speaking to talkSPORT, via the Guardian, he added: “I was told that the manager there [at Tottenham] thinks he’s the next Ronaldo. Well, I’d like to get the next Ronaldo for £12m.”

It remains to be seen how much it would’ve taken to snag him from their London rivals, but with his value shooting up to £70m as recently as the 2019 summer window, Daniel Levy must rue not pulling out all the stops to land him, especially in a time before the arrivals of Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn and obviously, Gareth Bale.

Zaha has bagged five goals in six league games already this season, averaging 2.5 shots, 1.7 dribbles and 1.5 key passes per game, via WhoScored, could you imagine his one goal every 108 minutes ratio in this current Spurs team? He’d be electrifying.

He could’ve left the Eagles for £30m in the window just gone, so there’s surely no chance of picking him up that cheap again now.

Levy should have listened to Pochettino instead of wearing his usual tough-negotiator hat. To miss out on the “next Ronaldo” is simply inexcusable.

Despite Crystal Palace signing Nathaniel Clyne on a free in the summer, he is only contracted until January. This has clearly been noticed as the club are now being linked with right-back Djed Spence.

The latest reports on Spence

In the past, it was suggested that Middlesbrough have reportedly set a £10m price tag on Spence, with manager Neil Warnock comparing him to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

He said: “If you look at one or two of the full-backs that are around now — the lad at Liverpool, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the lad at Manchester United from Palace [Aaron Wan-Bissaka] — they are all the same type as Djed.”

Now it is suggested by TEAMtalk that Middlesbrough face a battle to keep hold of the attacking full-back beyond January’s transfer window. Everton, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are all keen on the defender.

Would the defender be a good signing?

The right-back is only a teenager but made 22 appearances last season, winning 1.2 tackles a game, via WhoScored. He has also helped keep seven clean sheets last season, per Transfermarkt, and these statistics bode well for the youngster and highlight that he has considerable potential. With other Premier League sides interested in the teenager, it emphasises the scale of his potential.

Summer signing Nathan Ferguson is still injured and Clyne might not sign an extension. As a result of this, Joel Ward could be the only right-back available at the club post-January.

All this makes the possible transfer look like an astute signing. It could be a real coup for the South London side if they beat other sides to Spence’s signature.
