Newcastle have enjoyed mixed results this season but the counter-attacking style deployed by Steve Bruce seems to be an unsustainable method to obtain success in the Premier League.

The Magpies’ boss has been happy to concede possession in every match he has overseen so far, preferring instead to rely on the counter-attack and goals from set-pieces.

There have been promising performances from the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Allan Saint-Maximin, but too often they are restricted in how they can influence proceedings, and that is primarily due to the negative approach of the manager.

Averaging 38% possession in the league this term means it has been impossible for Newcastle to impose themselves on the opposition, and without that control in matches, their attacking players are suffering as a result.

That is partly why Joelinton is yet to get up and running, and why the Brazilian’s one goal is the only time any of the regular front-three have hit the back of the net.

The match against Aston Villa on Monday highlighted that concern. Due to a resolute defence, the Magpies were able to launch a breakaway on multiple occasions, but with nobody near him, Joelinton often failed to retain possession.

On one occasion he ran from the halfway line to the opposition penalty box without a teammate near him the entire time – all because of Bruce’s instructions to maintain the team’s shape at all costs.

Such orders remove any freedom the more creative and attack-minded players in the squad have.

It means players such Miguel Almiron and Saint-Maximin focus too much on defence and in attack they don’t receive enough support. To solve the problem, Bruce must begin telling DeAndre Yedlin and Jetro Willems to get forward more often.

Both wingbacks have shown this season that they can be useful in the final third, each scoring despite the defensive style which they are operating under.

By getting down the flanks with more frequency and purpose Newcastle could begin pinning the opposition down in their own half and create more space in the middle for the front-three to operate in.

That could also create chances for Jonjo Shelvey who has looked good in attack with two goals. Since there are three centre-backs on the pitch the Magpies would not need to worry too much about being exposed at the back.

Meanwhile, there could be another solution for Steve Bruce to turn to, and the answer lies in a player already at the club.

وأردف: “الأداء في الشق الهجومي ومن جهة الإيجابية على المرمى، ليس على المستوى، نحن نعاني في مركز رأس الحربة، هناك فرص كثيرة تضيع برعونة شديدة”.

وتابع: “نعاني من الضغط لأننا جئنا من الجونة إلى أسوان منذ يومين ثم سنعود إلى القاهرة، متى سأجري استشفاء للاعبين؟، الأمور صعبة جدًا”.

واختتم: “كل الأهداف التي دخلت مرمانا في كل المباريات من كرات ثابتة، وحاولنا نعالج هذا الأمر كثيرا، لكن هناك عدم توفيق”.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks was remarkably lucky to get through 70 minutes against Manchester United on Wednesday night.

Spurs lost 2-1 to the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho started the game with Moussa Sissoko and Winks in midfield but the England international struggled to stamp his authority on the game.

Indeed, his most telling contribution came after 13 minutes as he slid into Daniel James, inadvertently sending the Welshman into Mourinho on the sideline and earning a yellow card for his trouble.

Per WhoScored, the 23-year-old touched the ball 50 times throughout his time on the pitch and clocked up a pass accuracy of 92%, though he did not manage to lay on a key pass and he completed just one dribble, while failing to have a shot on goal.

Winks did make two tackles but he did not register an interception and, with Sissoko forced to babysit Serge Aurier throughout the game, he was unable to hold down the fort on his own in central midfield.

Off the bench

The obvious substitution should have been made at half-time, with Tanguy Ndombele brought on in Winks’ place.

Ndombele completed as many dribbles as the Englishman in 20 minutes and also managed a shot on goal which was well-saved by David de Gea.

Throughout this season, the France international has shown himself to be a dynamic presence both on and off the ball.

He has scored two goals, averaged 1.8 tackles per game, 0.8 interceptions, 0.7 key passes, while also registering one assist, per WhoScored.

He is a more rounded midfielder than Winks and one has to feel that he wouldn’t have looked so overawed in the centre of the pitch when Sissoko drifted wide.

Mourinho made headlines against Olympiacos when he substituted Eric Dier early on to bring on Christian Eriksen but it ultimately won Spurs the game.

He should have done similar here, sacrificing Winks to bring on Ndombele and wrestle back some control for his team.

As it was, they were hopelessly outfought in midfield.

Amidst a run of no wins in their previous nine games across all competitions, Arsenal got back into their old groove with an impressive comeback victory against West Ham on Monday night.

The Gunners have endured a miserable start to the season, with their Europa League defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt proving to be the end of Unai Emery’s tenure at the club. Club legend Freddie Ljungberg was named as interim head coach, but failed to see the proverbial new manager bounce in his opening two games in charge, drawing away at Norwich, before losing at home to Brighton.

And after going a goal down to West Ham courtesy of a deflected Angelo Ogbonna goal, Ljungberg may have been fearing the worst. But in a stirring second-half performance, the Gunners got back to winning ways thanks to strikes from Gabriel Martinelli, Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But whilst the trio will no doubt take a lot of the credit for the win, Sead Kolasinac’s enforced introduction mid-way through the first-half proved to be decisive.

Off the bench

The fact that Kolasinac wasn’t even in the match-day squad at the beginning of the night makes his impressive performance all the more remarkable. The Bosnian was at London Stadium probably readying himself for a cold evening on the touch-line with his snood, but found himself onto the bench at the last moment thanks to Hector Bellerin’s late withdrawal from the warm-up. The 26-year-old would then be forced to come on for an injured Kieran Tierney in the first-half, and his arrival heralded a much-needed change in emphasis for the Gunners.

Rather understandably perhaps, the north London side seemed lacking in confidence and almost afraid to commit too many forward. It was telling that in the time he was on the pitch Tierney didn’t manage a single successful dribble. The Gunners were more worried about their defensive responsibilities rather than trying to push men forward. But in Kolasinac, Ljungberg’s side had a presence on the pitch whose first thought was always to give Martinelli an overlapping option, and it was no surprise to see the £18m-rated man provide the assist for the crucial equaliser.

As per Sofascore, Kolasinac would finish the game with one successful dribble, one key pass, one big chance created, and one accurate cross. Not to mention that assist too. Arsenal were in dire need of someone to stand up and take responsibility and leadership for the side. And in their marauding left-back, they got exactly that.

Meanwhile, Arsenal appointing this man who helped mastermind a humiliation of Tottenham would be a smart move.

Campos is the man responsible for unearthing stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Anthony Martial, Fabinho and Nicolas Pepe. He also worked as a scout under Mourinho at Real Madrid several years ago.

The fellow Portuguese is known for finding gems at a low cost, which could be ideal for Spurs given the Evening Standard claiming that the north Londoners will only be able to operate in the free transfer and swap deal market this summer.

Matheus Martins pertence à Udinese, da Itália, mas está cedido por empréstimo ao Watford, da Inglaterra, que pertence a mesma rede de clubes da equipe italiana. O atacante será adquirido em definitivo pelo Botafogo.

O Botafogo vai pagar cerca de 10 milhões de euros (R$ 60,4 milhões na cotação atual) mais bonificações por metas. O pagamento será parcelado em três anos.

أكد روميلو لوكاكو لاعب تشيلسي الإنجليزي، أن انتقاله لـ إنتر ميلان، كان بمثابة انقاذه من حفرة عميقة في مانشستر يونايتد.

المهاجم البلجيكي غادر إنجلترا إلى إيطاليا في صيف 2019 بعد أشهر صعبة في مانشستر يونايتد، حيث فقد حظوظه تحت قيادة النرويجي أوليه جونار سولشاير.

وقال لوكاكو في تصريحات لشبكة “HLN” البلجيكية: “مغادرتي إلى تشيلسي كانت استثنائية، لأنني لم أكن أرحل عن إنتر ميلان إلا لـ تشيلسي فقط”.

وأضاف: “البعض يحبون ريال مدريد وبرشلونة ومانشستر يونايتد، ولكن تشيلسي بالنسبة لي بيت، الجميع يعرف ما يعنيه البلوز بالنسبة لي”.

وأشار: “تشيلسي كان جادًا في العرض الثالث، لذلك كان 100 مليون يورو، ثم 105 ثم 110، ثم عرفت أن هناك أمرًا خطير حقًا في حالة لم يوافق إنتر ميلان على العرض، لذلك قررت التدخل وذهبت إلى سيموني إنزاجي مدرب الفريق، وأخبرته أنني لن أتمكن من التركيز مع الفريق، والرجاء التوصل لاتفاق لرحيلي إلى تشيلسي”.

لوكاكو كان لاعبًا لـ تشيلسي في السابق عام 2011 عندما كان في عمر الـ18 عامًا، ولكن بعد موسم واحد تمت إعارته إلى وست بروميتش ثم إيفرتون، قبل أن ينتقل بشكل نهائي في 2014.

الآن بعد 10 سنوات، يعود صاحب الـ28 عامًا، ليلبي مطالب توماس توخيل الذي يرى بأنه الأنسب لقيادة هجومه، وبالفعل في أول مباراة سجل هدفًا أمام آرسنال، وساهم في تعادل صعب ضد ليفربول خلال المباراة الثانية.

وأردف: “انتقلت إلى إنتر ميلان في 2019 وكان ذلك بمثابة إنقاذ بالنسبة لي بعدما كنت أشعر أنني سأسقط  في حفرة عميقة”.
