Leeds: Totti rumours simply cannot be true

Putting the ‘silly’ in ‘silly season’ this summer so far has undoubtedly been Leeds United. First, we had those ridiculous links with free agent Gianluigi Buffon, but now it’s gone a step too far, which we didn’t think was possible, as there are claims Francesco Totti could wind up at Elland Road.

Before anyone gets excited, this is a player, who no matter how fantastic he was in his prime, is 42-years-old and has been retired since the end of the 2016/17 season. Regardless of that, TuttoMercatoWeb have claimed that Marco Borriello, whilst talking on Sky, claimed that he’s spoken to Totti who mentioned he had an offer to return to playing from an English team.

The reports are that the club in question is Leeds United. Come on, though, let’s just have a look at this one. If Totti does still have some of his superb technical ability, there’s no way he’ll still have his legs and the Championship can be a physically unforgiving league to deal with.

Surely there’s no way that the Italian would consider going back on his 2017 decision to retire and dust off his boots? It wouldn’t be the first time that a player has come out of retirement, and you could argue that if Buffon somehow ends up at Elland Road then it may be another pulling point for Totti, but not a lot else suggests that this might have legs.

The aim for Leeds should be looking into bringing in young guns to freshen up their squad. A few young, lively signings could do the trick for Leeds United, especially after witnessing Jamie Shackleton and Jack Clarke’s impressive form this past season, and there’s no way that Totti can be described as ‘young and lively’ as a player now.

We’re not going to stand here and slate the player, as Totti is a legend of the game. His career saw him score 250 Serie A goals in a 24-year career with Roma, but when he called time on that career it would have been for a reason, so one more season playing at Elland Road would make no sense at all.

After all, the Yorkshire Evening Post even described the transfer rumour as ‘nonsense’.

Leeds fans, surely you agree that a Totti swoop makes no sense? Comment below!

The stats that show why Clarke should start over Harrison

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

At the beginning of this transfer window Marcelo Bielsa reportedly made it very clear that he wanted to strengthen the wide positions of his squad, and Leeds have very quickly answered their boss’ wishes.

Jack Harrison returned to the club on loan and the Whites retained the services of Jack Clarke for another season, bringing him back on loan after selling him to Spurs.

These two arrivals provide the Argentine with something of a selection headache as the two wingers will be competing for the same spot.

Bielsa will have to make a decision as to which youngster he opts for on the left-wing, but a look at both players’ stats show that the decision should be an easy one.

Both men were competing for game time at Leeds last season, and while Harrison was the preferred option, Clarke was clearly the more impressive player.

In terms of providing an attacking threat, it’s hard to argue that the teenager isn’t the better option.

He averages 0.8 more shots per 90 minutes than the Man City man and he also averages almost double the number of key passes.

Harrison’s goal contribution numbers last season weren’t great as he scored four and assisted three. Clarke found the net twice and assisted a further two goals, but he did play over 1,800 minutes less than his older counterpart.

The dribbles per 90 mins stat is where the real difference between the players is on show.

Spurs’ new man made on average 3.4 more dribbles per 90 minutes than the former NYCFC man. Despite the 18-year-old’s tendency to run with the ball he somehow rarely loses it as Harrison is in fact dispossessed more times per 90 than Clarke even though he seemingly has a more conservative style of play.

Tottenham enter bidding for Phillips

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, per the Daily Mirror.

What’s the word?

Spurs have already signed Jack Clarke from the Championship club and are now hopeful of concluding a second deal with the Whites.

The Mirror reports that Aston Villa, Newcastle United, AFC Bournemouth and Wolves are all interested in the 23-year-old, who currently earns £10,000-per-week at Elland Road.

Villa, recently promoted to the Premier League, have already made an £11m bid, per the piece, though it was rejected.

Indeed, Leeds want to receive £30m for Phillips, who can play as a midfielder and a centre-back.

Versatile option

This is a potentially smart deal for Spurs.

Phillips impressed throughout the 2018/19 season as Marcelo Bielsa’s side went close to achieving promotion to the Premier League.

He made 46 appearances in all competitions and would be a relatively low-cost addition in what has turned into a frenzied summer of spending.

Spurs have already broken their transfer record to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon and one feels that they may not have another such acquisition up their sleeves, such was the outlay.

A move for the Englishman would add some depth in midfield and offer cover in defence, too, having featured 13 times as a centre-back last season.

Relations between the two clubs should be in good shape after the signing of Clarke and Phillips could well be an understated gem of a transfer.

Five Players Man Utd want to sign before August 8th

Manchester United underwhelmed last season as they laboured to sixth place in the Premier League, failing to qualify for the Champions League in the process. As such, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will want to boost his squad ahead of the new campaign with some star quality. Here, we take a look at five players the Red Devils want to sign before the summer transfer window slams shut on August 8th…

United struggled defensively last season, conceding 54 goals in the Premier League. That was the highest total of all of the top six and was a worse record than all but one of the top 10 in England’s top-tier. They have attempted to correct this already by signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace, and they have also been heavily linked to Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire. The 2018 World Cup star has impressed with the Foxes and his country, which has attracted the attention of the 20-time English champions. The deal could be completed very soon, it is being reported.

Sean Longstaff’s career may only just be beginning, but he has already made a good impression as part of Newcastle United’s midfield. So much so, he has become a strong target for Manchester United this summer. It had been reported that Solskjaer and co were ready to bid £30m at the start of the month for the 21-year-old, but they were then left shocked by the Toon’s £50m valuation of the midfielder. New manager Steve Bruce has stated that he wants to keep the midfielder this summer, so a big bid will be needed from the Old Trafford outfit.

Some say scoring goals is the hardest thing to do in football. Netting a hatful from the middle of the park is even harder. So one can only be impressed by the 32 times Bruno Fernandes struck for Sporting Lisbon last season. Such a danger from the midfield is always going to attract interest in the transfer market, and United are reportedly after the 24-year-old. They are understood to have made a €62m (£55.7m) offer for the Portugal international, with talks between the two continuing. Should they be able to capture their man, Fernandes would be a great addition to United’s squad.

PSG’s current domination of Ligue 1 may give the indication that there is a lack of talent in France, but that is not the case. Below the Parisian juggernaut, there are plenty of players who have a big future ahead of them. For example, Nicolas Pepe. The Ivory Coast scored 23 goals and provided 12 assists for Lille last season and even made the Ligue 1 team of the year. Such performances have not gone unnoticed by Manchester United, who are reportedly in advanced discussions for the 24-year-old. Could Pepe be the man to fire the Red Devils back to the top four?

Despite Tottenham reaching the Champions League final last season, Christian Eriksen does not see his future lying in North London. At least that’s what he told Danish outlet Elekstra Bladet. Those comments have piqued the attention of Manchester United, who are interested in taking the former Ajax man to Old Trafford. The Red Devils see the 27-year-old as the perfect replacement should Paul Pogba leave this summer. Of course, this one could be scuppered by Daniel Levy’s potential reluctance to sell to a Premier League rival, but that will not prevent United having their eyes on the attacking midfielder.

Leeds loanee Jack Clarke must improve in one area next season

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds’ Jack Clarke was at best a fringe player last season, breaking through into the first team to feature 24 times in the Championship.

However, this summer, he became a Tottenham player, agreeing a deal to move to the north London outfit for an undisclosed fee.

As part of the transfer, the 18-year-old returned to Elland Road on loan for the season in order to further his development.

Yet, if the youngster is to benefit from a final year with the Whites, Marcelo Bielsa needs to help him eradicate one part of his game.

On the chalkboard

Clarke showed promising signs last season, scoring twice as well as claiming the same number of assists.

Despite that, he only started four league games, being reduced to 20 appearances off the bench as he struggled to ever really become a starter.

And this term could be even harder for the teenager, especially after Helder Costa arrived from Wolves.

The Portuguese is a dynamic forward and has a history of performing well in the Championship, notching double figures for goal contributions in his two seasons in the second tier.

With that in mind, Clarke could find himself limited to game time as a substitute again.

That’s unless he makes one key change to his game, an attribute that could help him thrive during Bielsa’s second season with the club.

Last campaign, the wide man was unsuccessful with 1.1 touches per game, a statistic that’s rather alarming given the fact he rarely started.

The winger was particularly clumsy in possession of the ball and even lost it four times in just 26 minutes against Brentford, rounding off a particularly poor display in April.

Across the 2018/19 season, it became a regular part of his game, losing the ball another four times in 79 minutes against Derby whilst being unsuccessful with his touches on two occasions in a further five matches.

The fact is that next season, Clarke may find himself struggling even more unless he improves his attacking discipline.

Developing him now he’s moved to Spurs is unlikely to be at the height of Leeds’ priorities anymore, but if he is to become more of an asset in his final year, Bielsa needs to find a way for the young prodigy to improve his touch.

Rangers get some good news as Steve Bruce discusses Tavernier links

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has cooled rumours of James Tavernier heading to St. James’ Park this summer.

What’s he said?

Bruce’s side had been linked to the Rangers right-back, per Football Insider, but the manager’s comments suggest he’s never been in for him.

As reported by The Daily Record, the Magpies boss spoke of the links to Steven Gerrard’s captain after his side’s friendly win over Hibernian: “I really don’t know where that’s come from.”

The update was supported with the news that Newcastle are in for another right-back – Emil Krafth.

Kaveh Solhekol said live on Sky Sports News on Tuesday night [07:36 pm] that the Premier League side has tabled a £5.5m bid for the Amiens right-back.

With Newcastle in desperate need of a new full-back this summer, Bruce’s comments are surely music to the ears of everyone at Ibrox.

Boost for Rangers

With the Premier League side’s interest cooled and the English window drawing to a close, it’s looking more certain than ever that Tavernier will be a Rangers player for this coming season.

There’s no denying how important the right-back is at Ibrox. He’s been one of Rangers’ few constants since he joined the club in 2015 and is rightly the captain in a squad that isn’t short of big personalities and leaders.

The likes of Allan McGregor, Steve Davis and Scott Arfield could all stake a claim to being the captain, thanks to their long careers and status as senior players at the club, which is further testament to the esteem Gerrard and the club hold him in.

As well as being Gerrard’s chosen right-hand man, his end product is fantastic. He was in prolific form last season, scoring 17 times and assisting a further 20 in his 57 appearances for the Light Blues, as they ended the season trophyless yet invigorated for the new campaign.

Contributing to 37 goals from defence is unique, but losing him would cost the side so much more than just goals and assists. He is a leader on and off the pitch, evidenced by the fact that one of the Premier League’s greatest ever skippers continues to hand him the armband.

So it’s thankful for Gerrard that he can cross one more interested party off the list and plan for the upcoming campaign with his captain in tow.
