Failure to replace Victor Wanyama has cost Celtic dear on European stage

Another stiff European test awaits Celtic this week and it’s arguably the hardest they’ve faced in recent years. Paris Saint-Germain host Brendan Rodgers’ side on Wednesday night having only improved since the two sides last met, when the French stuck five past the Hoops without reply at Celtic Park.

PSG are still unbeaten in all competitions this season and since the match in Glasgow have scored an eye-watering 36 goals in 11 matches, the kind of attacking form that must be making Celtic fans sweat. On their own patch, Unai Emery’s side will be out for blood and the Hoops might not be able to do anything about it.

For supporters it could be another grim week of reflection on how they can improve to possibly compete in these group stage matches against the big hitters on the continent. In truth, no amount of tinkering will close the massive gap completely, but it wasn’t so long ago that Neil Lennon managed to guide them to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, overcoming the likes of Barcelona on their way.

At the heart of that progression into the knockout stages of the competition was a player they have yet to truly replace in the starting eleven; Victor Wanyama. The Kenyan midfielder left the following summer and in the four years since Celtic have been unable to find a player with the same physical presence and defensive attributes in the middle of the park that are required to get results at the elite level. While attracting players of Wanyama’s quality is difficult, they at least need to find a player that fits the profile. Until they do, the misery could continue.

In that 2012/13 European season, Wanyama was a defensive powerhouse for Celtic in the heart of the Hoops midfield, providing a contribution that is far beyond what is currently on offer in the Hoops.

Stats from WhoScored show that in comparison to this term, he outpaced all of Celtic’s current midfield regulars in almost every defensive metric in the group stages of the Champions League, an all-rounder who had the kind of presence that Brendan Rodgers would surely love to have available today. Whether it’s his per game average of five tackles, one block or four defensive clearances, he’s ahead of averages from the likes of Stuart Armstrong, Scott Brown and Olivier Ntcham.

In defence of the current midfielders, Celtic’s game is much less focused on defending doggedly and spoiling the game in midfield areas now than it was then, but that’s not an argument against introducing that kind of defensive presence again. It’s something that Celtic simply need to address if they’re to provide grown up displays at the elite level.

It’s not about changing their attacking, possession-based philosophy, but simply ensuring they have a player in that area that is going to provide the kind of committed defensive performance they need. Perhaps Scott Brown aside, that’s significantly lacking and it has cost them dearly in the years since.

The Hoops conceded eight goals in the 2012/13 group stage, a not insignificant number, but a massive positive compared to the seasons since in which they’ve not had that strong defensive midfield presence, in the wake of Wanyama’s departure. In 2013/14 they conceded 14, at a lower level in the Europa League groups in 2014/15 and 2015/16 they conceded 11 and 12 and last season they let in a massive 16. So far this term they’ve already conceded 10 and still have two matches to play.

It’s true that Celtic could do with significant improvement in defensive line with errors at the back littering their European campaign for years now, but that lack of protection from midfield is definitely a factor and something that needs to be looked at in upcoming transfer windows.

Rodgers made the shrewd acquisition of Olivier Ntcham in the summer, but so far he’s definitely not been the answer in that regard with the Celtic boss reverting to the energetic presences of Stuart Armstrong and Callum McGregor in recent weeks. Eboue Kouassi looks a real prospect and in time could prove to be the midfield enforcer the Hoops are looking for, but isn’t exactly progressing at a rapid rate.

The hope will be that they can get a lot closer to Paris Saint-Germain this week, but if that doesn’t happen and they’re again licking their wounds, perhaps thoughts will turn to fielding a more pragmatic midfield and putting the search out for a replacement for Wanyama that is arguably four years too late.

Celtic fans absolutely loved Olivier Ntcham’s performance vs Hamilton

Celtic maintained their five point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night, overcoming Hamilton 3-1 at Celtic Park.

On a night when both Rangers and Aberdeen won tricky away encounters, it was absolutely vital that the Hoops didn’t drop any more points after drawing with Hibernian on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers’ side ensured there was no such drama and comfortably saw off the challenge of Accies thanks to goals from Scott Sinclair, James Forrest and Olivier Ntcham.

Ntcham in particular produced a cracking performance, dictating much of the game from the centre of midfield and finding his teammates at short and long range with some lovely passing. His goal wasn’t half bad either, a rifled volley from a Sinclair cross that would probably still be travelling had there been no nets.

The 21-year-old Frenchman is showing form and class beyond his young years and fans are really excited about his future at the club.

Supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his Wednesday night performance…

Pedro Rebocho could be the cheap Joe Bryan that Leeds are looking for

Leeds United are interested in signing Guingamp defender Pedro Rebocho according to Kick Off.

What’s the story?

The 23-year-old left back came through the ranks at Benfica and moved to the Ligue 1 side Guingamp last summer and made 21 appearances over the season, registering two assists.

Even though Guingamp’s campaign was fairly uninspiring, Rebocho was one of the few bright sparks, and the side averaged a 42 win percentage when he started, as opposed to 21 per cent when he didn’t.

While no fee is mentioned in the article, Leeds may have to pay over the odds to sign the player valued at £1.35million on Transfermarkt, as he is only one year into his contract at Guingamp and has already shown a lot of promise.

Solid option for Leeds

Left-back is clearly an area which needs investment as a number of players tried to fill the gap in the team last year before youngster Tom Pearce claimed it towards the end of the season.

Leeds are considering signing Bristol City flyer Joe Bryan, as are a number of other clubs, but reports suggest that the Robins could be seeking as much as £10million for the 23-year-old.

If Leeds want to save some money but still buy top-class talent, Rebocho could be a much cheaper alternative who has experience playing top-flight football.

The wing-backs are key positions if Marcelo Bielsa employs his 3-3-3-1 formation and at 23, Rebocho can help fill a rather big hole in the Leeds team and still improve.

Sunderland can’t allow Charlie Wyke to slip through their fingers this summer

According to Sky Sports, Peterborough United have made an offer for Bradford City striker Charlie Wyke.

Wyke was prolific in League One last season for Bradford, but could now be available at a cut price fee of £500k – which Posh have reportedly already offered – due to the fact the 25-year-old is entering the final year of his contract with Bradford.

Wyke has been a long-term target for the Black Cats, who should now be doing all they can to steal in ahead of Peterborough for the striker’s signature.

The Breakdown

The signing of a new striker must be pretty high up on new Sunderland boss Jack Ross’ agenda. With Joel Asoro set for a move to Swansea (BBC), that leaves 19-year-old Josh Maja as the only recognised first team striker at the Stadium of Light.

If Sunderland are to make an immediate return to the second tier, then this squad needs injecting with goals, which is exactly what Wyke would provide.

If the man who scored 15 goals and made 8 assists in League One last season can be got for a figure in the region of £500k, then that is an opportunity Ross can’t afford to miss. To be able to make such a big signing for such a small fee would be a great start to what is a huge rebuilding job facing the Scottish boss this summer.

Revealed: 47% of Birmingham fans would rather sign Waghorn than Bialkowski

Garry Monk has taken a bold stance towards Birmingham City’s goalkeeping situation, allowing both his senior stoppers – David Stockdale and Tomasz Kuszczak – to stay at home while the squad go on their pre-season tour.

That position was likely predicated on the Blues being able to shift the former Brighton and Manchester United men and using those funds to secure the services of a new number one, but the landscape has changed.

Top goalkeeping target Bartosz Bialkowski has signed a new three-year contract with Ipswich Town, fresh from being part of the Poland squad at the World Cup out in Russia, ending Monk’s hopes of landing him to replace Stockdale and Kuczszak.

However, that doesn’t necessarily end the links between the Tractor Boys and the Blues this summer, as forward Martyn Waghorn has reportedly attracted interest from Monk as he looks to formulate a more potent attack this summer.

The close links between the two clubs’ transfer activity led us to ask Blues fans which of the Tractor Boys they would rather sign.

The poll was close, and while Bialkowski understandably came out on top given the mess between the sticks, 47 per cent want Waghorn to add extra spice to the club’s frontline.

Tottenham fans desperate for Lozano deal

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham Hotspur want to sign PSV Eindhoven attacker Hirving Lozano in this summer’s transfer window.

Lozano scored 19 times and registered 11 assists in 34 appearances for PSV last term.

The 22-year-old was also in fine form for Mexico at the 2018 World Cup – getting his name on the scoresheet against Germany before registering an assist against South Korea.

Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for the attacker, but according to TEAMtalk, Tottenham are now firmly in the race.

Lozano showed incredible potential last season, and he certainly has the ability to light up the Premier League if given the chance.

Indeed, it is the type of signing that could help Tottenham take that extra step next season as they look to put together a title challenge.

The Tottenham fans have been airing their views on the transfer speculation on social media, and it would be fair to say that they are desperate for the deal to take place.

Sadio Mane expected to sign new contract, Liverpool fans react

The summer transfer window has been an exciting one for Liverpool fans as Jurgen Klopp has brought in some key players to bolster the team for this season’s challenge.

The Reds secured a top-four finish and reached the Champions League final, but it was clear that they required a few more pieces of the puzzle to be title contenders.

It remains to be seen whether the Merseyside outfit will be battling it out against Manchester City and co for the Premier League crown, but they have certainly signed players that makes part of the conversation.

In midfield, Liverpool have strengthened with the arrivals of Fabinho and Naby Keita, while Xherdan Shaqiri has arrived to provide an extra option out wide.

Most importantly, though, was the signing of Alisson from Roma, as the goalkeeper is expected to replace Loris Karius, who made two mistakes that cost the Reds the Champions League final against Real Madrid in May.

On top of that, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah recently signed new long-term deals.

Sadio Mane completes Liverpool’s attacking force, and according to a piece from Melissa Reddy for JOE.co.uk, the winger is expected to follow in his teammates’ footsteps and sign a fresh deal.

With three of Klopp’s key players fully focused on bringing success to Anfield, it is easy to see why fans are feeling excited.

They made their thoughts on Mane’s future known during a discussion on Reddit.

Revealed: 70% of Rangers fans want a loan swoop for Abraham

Loads of Rangers fans have been discussing which striker Steven Gerrard should sign, and a whopping 70 per cent of fans have backed a move for Tammy Abraham.

The links to Dominic Solanke been popping up all summer, and The Scottish Sun reported recently that the Gers are still interested in the Liverpool striker.

The 20 year-old has done exceptionally well through the England youth ranks, but it took until the final day of last season for him to grab his first Premier League goal, after 21 showings for Liverpool.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”271323″ player=”12034″ title=”Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Football Manager”]

The Gers already have a talented youngster who tends to be a bit wasteful in Alfredo Morelos, and Gerrard is definitely chasing another striker, proved by last week’s interest in Kyle Lafferty.

Plenty of fans want a complete change of direction though, voting overwhelmingly for a loan swoop for Chelsea’s Abraham.

The lanky youngster scored 23 Championship goals on loan at Bristol City as a teenager, and is unlikely to get many first team opportunities at Stamford Bridge.

70 per cent of fans said they would prefer him to Solanke, and you can find the full poll results down below…

Liverpool need depth and Brazilian Bernard might be a shrewd move

Liverpool fans can be pretty happy with the club’s transfer business this summer.

With Alisson, Shaqiri, Fabinho and Naby Keita, Klopp now has the squad ready to challenge City for the title and finally win a Premier League title for the club.

With £163.98 million spent this summer, Liverpool’s starting XI might just be one of, if not the best in Europe.

While Klopp’s business is mostly done, with six days left in the transfer market, the Reds could still be in the market for some added depth. It’ll probably take a few departures for the club to bring anyone in but with the possible departures of Markovic, Origi, Ings and Ojo, Liverpool might have some free spots to fill.

To fill those spots, The Mirror via Inside Futbol, is reporting that Liverpool will battle Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal for Shakhtar Donetsk forward Bernard.

The Breakdown

The former Brazilian prodigy is a free agent following the expiration of his contract with the Ukranian club and wants to make the move to England.

Highly rated when he was playing for Atletico Mineiro, Bernard has spent five years in Ukraine but has never fulfilled the potential he showcased in Brazilian.

His goalscoring record at the club isn’t fantastic, six being the highest he’s managed in a season albeit in 18 games. However, the 25-years-old who’s a free agent could provide another attacking option off the bench during a long hard Premier League campaign.

He may not be an incredible talent but under Klopp’s tutelage, Liverpool may have found a cheap backup for their forward line.

Newcastle United fans convinced Gayle will return next summer once club suffers relegated

Newcastle United’s summer transfer window could have been predicted before the market opened.

Much like this time last year, manager Rafael Benitez received broken promises from club owner Mike Ashley.

The former Liverpool boss has made it clear in the media that he has been largely left in the dark with regards to funds and transfer activity at St James’ Park.

With just two days left before the window slams shut, Newcastle have signed goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a permanent deal, Ki-Sung yueng on a free transfer, Kenedy from Chelsea on loan, Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar, Japanese international Yoshinori Muto and Salomon Rondon on loan from West Bromwich Albion.

As part of the deal that brought Rondon to the North-East outfit, Dwight Gayle moved to The Hawthorns on a temporary spell.

The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder reports that the forward wanted to stay at Newcastle and could return next summer.

Some Newcastle fans all had the same reaction on Twitter, suggesting that their beloved club will suffer relegation from the Premier League.
