Revealed: 81% of Stoke City fans want Yarmolenko over Konoplyanka

Marko Arnautovic’s impending £24million move to West Ham has left a sizeable hole in Stoke City’s attack, one Mark Hughes will have to try and fill before the close of the summer transfer window.

According to reports from the Stoke Sentinel, that has seen the Welshman reconsider some of the club’s former targets – namely Ukrainian duo Yevhen Konoplyanka and Andriy Yarmolenko.

Both are winger-forwards of relatively similar description and of a similar mould to Arnautovic, capable of both scoring goals and providing them. In fact, Yarmolenko boasts an impressive return of 29 goals in 68 appearances for his country.

With that in mind, we asked Stoke City fans earlier this week which attacker they’d rather see arrive at the Bet365 Stadium this summer, and a staggering 81% of those who took part in our poll voted in Yarmolenko’s favour.

Transfermarkt value the 6 foot 2 forward at £15.3million, which should be well within Stoke’s financial reach. But plenty of clubs have tried and failed to prize Yarmolenko away from Dynamo Kyiv down the years.

Three reasons Newcastle should hijack West Brom’s bid to sign Joel Ward

According to reports in The Sun on Thursday, via the Birmingham Mail, West Bromwich Albion are targeting a move for Crystal Palace defender Joel Ward after he rejected a new four-year contract to stay at Selhurst Park.

The 27-year-old has been a regular in the Eagles defence over the course of the past five seasons, but the Birmingham Mail says that he now feels his game time could be limited following the appointment of Frank de Boer as the club’s new manager this summer as he has just one year remaining on his contract.

The Birmingham Mail says the Dutchman could implement a 3-4-3 formation next season and having signed Jairo Riedewald and Timothy Fosu-Mensah this summer, the versatile defender could look to seek a move away before the transfer window slams shut.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has been busy strengthening his own squad ahead his side’s Premier League return, and he may feel that Ward could add something to his team.

Here are three reasons Newcastle should hijack West Brom’s move for Ward…

Premier League experience

While he has strengthened his squad this summer Rafa Benitez may feel that he still needs to add some more players with Premier League experience to his side, and he would certainly be doing that if he signed Ward, who made 168 clearances in 38 Premier League appearances last term.

The 27-year-old has only missed 11 top flight matches in the last four campaigns for Crystal Palace and he certainly knows all about the attacking players Newcastle will come up against this season having been such a regular in the Eagles backline.

That knowledge could be crucial to the Magpies as they look to avoid suffering an immediate relegation back to the Championship.

Versatility

While he has often played at either left or right-back during his Crystal Palace career, Ward is a versatile player and that is something that could attract the attentions of Benitez as he looks to add to his squad.

The 27-year-old has also played at centre-back, defensive midfield and on the wing in the past and he would certainly prove to be a useful addition to the Newcastle squad in that sense, and he could easily go on to become one of the Magpies’ most important players in the upcoming campaign.

Price tag

Having turned down a new four-year contract and with less than 12 months remaining on his current deal, Crystal Palace must now decide whether they cash in on Ward now or risk losing him for nothing in 2018.

The former could be more likely and while he has proven to be a consistent Premier League performer, he isn’t one of the more fashionable names in the division and as a result he could be available for a reasonable fee this summer.

Newcastle have already shown with their additions this summer that they aren’t able to shell out huge amounts for new players and the 27-year-old certainly looks as though he would be someone that they can afford.

Jurgen Klopp open to Philippe Coutinho return despite transfer drama

Speaking to German outlet Sport1, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has dropped a big hint that Philippe Coutinho could be in line for a return to his Liverpool squad after this summer’s transfer saga.

What’s the story?

Coutinho was the subject of significant interest from Barcelona this summer, with the player even handing in a transfer request.

The two clubs have been subsequently getting into a war of words regarding the potential transfer. Barcelona claim the Reds set their asking price at £183m, while Liverpool deny he was ever for sale at any price.

Regardless of the details, the entire saga has meant the Brazilian has been unsettled at Anfield and he’s yet to feature for the Anfield club this season. That could be about to change though with Klopp believing he still has a quality player who can feature for his team.

Speaking to Sport1, the Liverpool manager said:

We still have a really good player in the squad who can play. Don’t believe everything in the press or that there are offers here and there and that the minute after the offer has been entered, it should already be over. We are not like George Orwell where everybody knows everything immediately. We have exactly the situation we wanted and no other.

It seems then that there is no issue on the German’s part regarding all of this and with Philippe Coutinho featuring for Brazil in this week’s international action, the player himself also appears fit and ready to play.

Will we see him return to the Liverpool squad for the big visit to Manchester City on Saturday?

BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson thinks Newcastle’s winning run will end at Brighton

BBC football pundit Mark Lawrenson has once again been giving his Premier League predictions ahead of the weekend’s fixtures, and he believes Newcastle United’s three-match winning streak will come to an end when they face fellow newly-promoted side Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.

The Magpies recovered from successive defeats and no goals in their opening two top flight matches of the season by recording victories against West Ham United, Swansea City and then Stoke City at St James’ Park last weekend, but Lawrenson doesn’t think they will take any points with them back to Tyneside.

While Rafa Benitez’s men lie in fourth in the standings, the Seagulls are down in 16th having taken just four points from their opening five encounters, although they did beat West Bromwich Albion 3-1 on the south coast in their previous home match.

The Toon Army will certainly be full of confidence themselves with the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie in brilliant form right now, as they look to pick up four successive Premier League wins for the first time since November 2014.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Lawrenson said: “The Magpies’ run of form, with three straight wins, would suggest they are going to do same when they return to the south coast on Sunday, but I am actually backing Brighton here.

“I hate the phrase ‘must-win’, especially at this stage, but Hughton will know this is a game that his side really need to get something out of if they are going to stay in the top flight.”

Newcastle won 1-0 when these two teams met at the Amex Stadium in February, and it proved to be a vital result as the Magpies finished one point ahead of Brighton to lift the Championship trophy.

McCormack finalises loan move to Melbourne, Aston Villa fans react

Aston Villa have announced that Ross McCormack has completed a move to Australian club Melbourne City. The 31-year-old has moved on a temporary deal and is expected to return to the Midlands after the New Year.It is only a short spell for the striker as Melbourne are looking for someone to fill in while Bruno Fornaroli recovers from injury.

McCormack’s Villa career has not gone as planned, as he made just 20 Championship appearances last season, scoring three goals and producing one assist.

The forward also had a loan spell at Nottingham Forest, but he had just seven outings and scored once.

After falling out of favour under Steve Bruce at Villa Park, the Scotland international also had a spell on the sidelines due to cysts that needed to be removed from his mouth.

McCormack will head to Australia with the hope of earning some much-needed game time after making just two Carabao Cup appearances this season.

After the announcement was made, Villa fans took to Twitter.

Fabian Delph will turn out to be Man City’s James Milner replacement

Every team needs a utility man, but the idea of being one is probably anathema to most players.

Essentially, it means not being able to carry out any of the main roles in the team, because you’re always being kept as cover for others. But for Fabian Delph, it could turn out to be one of the best things to happen to his Manchester City career.

The England man’s revival as a left-back, playing as cover for the injured Benjamin Mendy, has been a surprise. Indeed, he’s been so good over the past few weeks that you do have to wonder why he wasn’t used in that position last season, when City’s full-back spots were clear problem areas for Pep Guardiola’s side. More importantly, though, City now have a genuine cover for perhaps the only player in the side who seemed irreplaceable, apart from, arguably, Ederson.

When you look at Guardiola’s squad, there are understudies for almost every player. The injury to Sergio Aguero just gave an opportunity to Gabriel Jesus to play in a front three with the pace of Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling, who all terrorised champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. Since Vincent Kompany last played for City, his side haven’t conceded a league goal and have let in only one in all competitions.

Even Bernardo Silva, one of the outstanding young talents in Europe, is being kept on the bench by the form of David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne. But Mendy was a special case: City bought three full-backs in the summer, two on the right and one on the left, and so an injury to Mendy was always going to mean having to make do with a less than perfect option.

Initially, that looked like being Danilo, or possibly using Leroy Sane as a left wing-back – something which probably cost City a goal in their draw at home to Everton – but now the role is surely going to be filled by Fabian Delph.

It will be interesting, though, to see what that means for the England international going forward. Is he now City’s undisputed second choice left-back? Has his position changed to the point where City won’t be relying on him to fill a central midfield role in the future – even though it’s unlikely that Delph would get much game time in City’s current midfield? And what does it mean for England.

Perhaps the best outcome for the former Leeds United and Aston Villa player is a role as the utility player in the City side, and that could reignite his career.

When James Milner ran down his City contract and left for Liverpool, it was ostensibly because he was tired of being played in a role away from the centre of midfield. Although he ended up – ironically enough – playing left-back for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season, Milner joined the Anfield club on a free transfer on the basis that he’d be able to reprise a central role in a team which didn’t have the likes of Silva or De Bruyne in the way.

Since then, City have been without that sort of utility player. Pablo Zabaleta and Aleksandar Kolarov both played unfamiliar roles at times last season, the Argentine full-back played at times in the centre of midfield, whilst Kolarov played mostly as a centre-back. Even Jesus Navas filled in as a right-back towards the end of the season. Clearly, though, none of those players were at their very best, and having all left the club, City have a newly-found versatile player to take their place.

In the long run, that might change perceptions of Delph, and it might really help his career. But for now, perhaps the most credit shouldn’t actually go to him. Perhaps it should go to the team.

When you bring someone in as cover for a player as important as Mendy, and when it happens in a position where City struggled so terribly last season, you could be forgiven for worrying about what it means for the team.

But instead of seeming like a weak position, the team seemed to adapt: Delph deserves praise for being able to slot in, but the team too should take plaudits for the unity they’ve shown and the fact that the team now seems so fluid that losing an important player was so easily fixed that, even though the replacement is clearly inferior, he doesn’t really look it.

Like a mutant in a horror film, City lost a limb and grew it back instantly, looking every bit as fearsome as they were before.

Tottenham fans want Anthony Martial as part of any Danny Rose to Man United deal

According to reports in The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose is a £50m January target for Premier League rivals Manchester United, but Spurs fans want Red Devils star Anthony Martial included in any deal.

The Sun says that Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho wants to solve his left-back issue by bringing the 27-year-old to Old Trafford in the New Year, and he looks to have been given some hope that a deal could be possible after Rose was excluded from the north London outfit’s 2018 calendar.

The England international has only just returned to training following a knee injury that has kept him on the sidelines since January, and he faces a fight to dislodge the impressive Ben Davies in the left wing-back spot.

Meanwhile, Martial has scored three goals and provided a further two assists for United in the Premier League this season despite starting just once and featuring for a total of 139 minutes in their seven top flight fixtures.

Tottenham supporters were quick to have their say on the Rose rumour via social media, and while some said “we should not even be talking to Man Utd” unless the French forward is involved, others said they would do a deal for “£20m + Martial”.

In Focus: Benkovic could solve Celtic’s defensive problems

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic are stepping up their interest in Dinamo Zagreb defender Filip Benkovic ahead of the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Celtic’s problems at centre-back are well known, they’ve struggled to find a consistent partnership all season due to injuries with first-choice defenders Jozo Simunovic, Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko all missing significant chunks of the 2017/18 already.

After the latest injury to Simunovic, Brendan Rodgers recently admitted it was an area he was now looking at in January.

One man apparently on their radar is Filip Benkovic, with The Scottish Sun reporting that the Hoops sent scouts to watch him in action just this past weekend.

Rated at £7.2m by Transfermarkt and with his contract not expiring until 2022, he could cost the Scottish champions a fair amount, but is he the long-term answer in the position as the club look to push on to new heights both domestically and in Europe?

A good signing?

Benkovic is regarded as one of the finest defensive prospects in Croatia and alongside Jozo Simunovic, who was signed from the same club, or Dedryck Boyata could build a formidable partnership in the Hoops’ defensive line.

Still just 20 years of age, he’s made over 50 appearances for Dinamo Zagreb and appears destined to find international caps too, representing his nation at U21 level. As a bonus, he’s also already made 15 appearances in UEFA competition, including five group stage matches in the Champions League last season.

If Celtic are to perform well in Europe beyond Christmas they need not just a player who can provide cover in the position but also compete for places outright and Benkovic definitely fits the bill.

It’s finding this kind of talent that Celtic have thrived on in recent seasons and if they could somehow get a deal done it would go a long way to appeasing fans’ concerns that they short of personnel in the centre of defence.

Liverpool fans were delighted with the return of Sadio Mane on Saturday

Liverpool were in rampant form on Saturday, thrashing West Ham United 4-1 at the London Stadium to move up to fifth in the English Premier League table.

It was a match defined by the contributions of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who were both in lethal form on the counter-attack with the former scoring a double and the latter getting two assists.

Alongside goalscorers Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain they sent the travelling Reds home to Liverpool delighted.

Fans were particularly joyous about the return of Mane, who was returning to the starting line-up after a month lay-off due to a hamstring injury.

Jurgen Klopp wasted no time introducing him back into the team and was rewarded with an excellent performance, his blistering pace something West Ham just couldn’t cope with.

Supporters are now hoping he can stay fit an get an extended run in the team, with some even calling for him to be awarded with a new bumper contract.

They took to Twitter to share their thoughts…

In Focus: Newcastle given big boost in Tosun pursuit

Newcastle United have been given a major boost in the pursuit of Besiktas forward Cenk Tosun following quotes from the Turkish outfit’s president Fikret Orman.

What’s the story?

Newcastle are one of a number of clubs that have been linked with a move for Tosun, who has been tipped to leave Turkey when the January transfer window opens for business.

The Magpies have now been given a boost after Besiktas president Orman told TRT Spor that he would be open to the 26-year-old leaving at the start of 2018 for the right price.

Orman claimed that there had been no official offer as things stand, but his comments are expected to spark a response from Newcastle, who are in the market for a new striker following their problems in the final third of the field this season.

Tosun still has two years to run on his deal with Besiktas, whilst it is understood that the Turkish champions rate the striker at £20m, despite transfermarkt.co.uk currently placing a valuation of just £9.5m on his head.

What are Tosun’s credentials?

Tosun fired Besiktas to the Turkish title with 20 league goals last season, and he has managed 10 goals in 16 appearances during the 2017-18 campaign.

Four of the striker’s goals this term have come in the Champions League, whilst he has netted five times in 11 Super Lig appearances during an impressive start to the season.

Tosun has also found the back of the net eight times in 24 appearances for Turkey, and at the age of 26, the signs are very bright for the future.

It would be some coup if Newcastle could bring the forward to England, but the Magpies will surely face competition from a number of other interested clubs.

Pricing could also be a problem as Besiktas hold out for the right fee, although it is certainly a transfer to watch ahead of the January transfer window.
