“I’ve never really focused on long-term goals, but I think being an England Ashes year and Dukes balls, plus being a left-armer as well there’s an option to go down there,” Paris said after the Shield final”I’ve really just focused on playing great cricket for WA this year and then if opportunities come up and the right timing happens, we’ll see what happens from there. But that [international cricket] is something I’ve always strived to get back to.”It’s been a while since I represented Australia and if that opportunity arises, I’ll take it with both hands.”Paris will be replaced by South Australia quick Jordan Buckingham who took 15 wickets at 31.00 in the Sheffield Shield. The Australia A squad is a mixture of those close to the Test side and younger players earmarked for the future. From Bazball to baseball: Harry Brook joins MLB spring training

Harry Brook has made a stunning start to his career as a Test cricketer but this weekend he will swap Bazball for baseball as he tries his hand at a different kind of hitting.Brook, who has made 809 runs and four hundreds in his first four Tests, arrived in the United States on Wednesday following England’s one-run defeat to New Zealand in the second Test in Wellington, and will join the St Louis Cardinals at spring training in Florida. His code-switch will not last long. Brook’s involvement with the Cardinals has come about through a commercial deal with Major League Baseball (MLB), which will see Brook and England fast bowler Issy Wong become MLB ambassadors in Europe.Related

Does Harry Brook have more runs than even Don Bradman in his first nine Test innings?

“I’m really excited for this partnership and can’t wait to try my hand at hitting some home runs,” Brook said in an MLB press release. “I’m intrigued to see how different it is to cricket and what similarities there are too – will a home run feel as good as hitting a six?”I’m also excited to learn from how other professional sportspeople go about their game and see if there are any transferable skills between batting in baseball and cricket. It’s going to be amazing to see baseball first hand in the US and help spread the word back in the UK and hopefully help build baseball’s fan base here.”

Brook will film some promotional content with the Cardinals while in the US over the next few days, before returning home on Sunday. It is understood that the deal will also see Brook play in the IPL and the Ashes with an MLB logo affixed to the back of his bat, while Wong will do the same in the upcoming WPL and the English summer.Brook was initially due to play for Lahore Qalandars in the PSL in March and was considered for selection for England’s white-ball tour to Bangladesh. But he has instead opted to rest ahead of the IPL after a hectic winter, and will spend around three weeks at home after his trip to the US, before travelling to India to fulfil his lucrative contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Trott: 'The longer Gurbaz bats, the more we win'

The Afghanistan coach believes getting Gurbaz to understand every game isn’t a T20 is the key to his ODI evolution

Mohammad Isam08-Jul-2023

Rahmanullah Gurbaz celebrates after raising his ton•Walton

Rahmanullah Gurbaz staying still and smacking the ball gives Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott a lot of pleasure. Gurbaz’s career-best 145 consigned Bangladesh to a 142-run defeat as the visitors clinched the three-match ODI series with one game still remaining. Afghanistan put up a formidable 331 for 9 in their 50 overs, banking on record 256-run opening stand between Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who also made a century.Gurbaz struck 13 fours and eight sixes in his 125-ball stay, and was particularly destructive in his final 25 balls off which he smacked 45 runs. Afghanistan raised the tempo during that portion of their innings, scoring 69 runs in six overs leading up to Gurbaz’s dismissal in the 37th over.Trott said Gurbaz and Ibrahim complemented each other very well.”He [Gurbaz] can score everywhere around the ground,” Trott said. “He sometimes rushes it and thinks that every game is a T20. The longer Gurbaz bats for us, the more chance we have of winning. I was obviously very happy with how [the opening partnership] was going, especially the shots that they played. It was certainly on a wicket where if you bowl well, you can create some pressure. It had a little variable bounce.”We were going to bat first if we won the toss, having looked at the weather. There was no rain. There wasn’t as much grass as the previous match. I think the way that Gurbaz played in his natural attacking style, while Ibrahim was a nice foil at the other side. Gurbaz didn’t have to worry about another new batsman at the other end. It was a good sort of dovetailing if you like. I was happy with the first 35 overs.”Gurbaz doesn’t need to worry too much about his technique, Trott believes. All he needs is to stand tall and let his instincts do the rest. “I think it was about Gurbaz being as still as possible at release,” Trott said. “Sometimes he is moving. Sometimes a player as talented as Gurbaz can get wrapped up in technique instead of just watching the ball.”It is about making the game as simple as possible with the hand-eye coordination that Gurbaz has. It is about just being simple in the mind, technically as well. He has worked hard, so hopefully he can back it up in the third ODI.”Afghanistan players have a chat with coach Jonathan Trott at training•Munir Uz Zaman/AFP/Getty Images

Zadran’s improvement also impressed the coach, who reckons the openrr is showing maturity beyond his age. His two hundreds and two fifties against Sri Lanka caught the eye, and he made 100 off 119 balls against Bangladesh, batting until the 46th over to ensure his side got close to the 300-run mark.”He [Zadran] is very good,” Trott said. “He will improve as he gets older. He showed maturity in the knock realising that Gurbaz was attacking. Sometimes for a young player, you try to copy that, and maybe get out of your little bubble. It was important that he stayed there till the end. Otherwise we may have lost our way if he got out as well. Credit to him for a fantastic innings.”Afghanistan’s ODI series win also comes off the back of a massive Test defeat to Bangladesh last month. They lost by 546 runs, lasting only 39 and 36 overs respectively in the two innings.”I arrived in Bangladesh disappointed with the way the Test went,” Trott said. “We learned as a side. We realised how much progress Bangladesh has made in all areas of the game. We needed to be at the top of our game to come here and compete.”It is important that we focus on the next game as well. We can’t get too wound up or hyped up. We can’t rest on our laurels if we want to improve as a side looking ahead to the Asia Cup and World Cup. When you go to competitions and Cups, you need to keep winning.”Afghanistan also bowled well to defend their total. Bangladesh lost wickets in clusters of three each; the first three for 25 runs, the second three for seven runs and the last three wickets for 30 runs. Trott felt that Fazalhaq Farooqi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman gave Afghanistan the perfect start with the ball.”Fazal started the first over with a maiden. You want to start well with the ball defending 330,” Trott said. “Sometimes you can let the opposition get a good start. The way that he [Farooqi] and Mujeeb bowled were fantastic. I think we learned how to bowl on this wicket. Hopefully we can apply that in the third game.”

Wareham 57 and three-fors from Molineux and Gardner give Australia series win

Fariha Trisna’s hat-trick gives Bangladesh something to celebrate

Georgia Wareham made the most of her opportunity as part of a reshuffled batting order with an impressive maiden T20I fifty as Australia secured the series with a comprehensive 58-run victory, although Fariha Trisna’s hat-trick gave Bangladesh something to savour.Ahead of the tour, Australia coach Shelley Nitschke had indicated to ESPNcricinfo that some different combinations could be tried during the series with an eye on the T20 World Cup later this year, and so it transpired.Wareham and Grace Harris, the latter opening alongside Phoebe Litchfield, added 91 in 54 balls for the second wicket to form the major stand in Australia’s innings. Wareham, who struck ten boundaries, brought up her half-century from 26 deliveries.Litchfield had missed out at the top of the order when she fell for 2 off 7 balls to continue a lean run of form since the India tour over Christmas. In 18 innings since then, taking in the multi-format series against South Africa, the WPL and this tour, she has a top score of 35.Fariha Trisna leaps in celebration after completing her hat-trick•Getty Images

Australia stumbled after Wareham departed, managing just 55 for 7 from the remaining 8.3 overs of their innings of which 39 came in a stand between Tahlia McGrath and Ellyse Perry.Left-armer Trisna gave the innings a dramatic conclusion when she removed Perry, Sophie Molineux and Beth Mooney, who was down at No. 9, in consecutive deliveries.Still, Australia’s total proved well out of reach for Bangladesh although they started promisingly with 22 coming off the first two overs. But once the opening stand of 34 was broken by Megan Schutt, it was one-way traffic.Molineux and Ash Gardner took 6 for 27 from their combined eight overs while Wareham added to her runs by removing top-scorer Dilara Akter for 27.The final match of the series takes place on Thursday.
