Brighton trying to beat Crystal Palace to sign "terrific" 6 foot 3 defender

Turning their attention towards the summer transfer window, Brighton & Hove Albion are now reportedly keen on signing a key defensive addition ahead of rivals Crystal Palace.

Brighton transfer news

The Seagulls are once again back on track under Fabian Hurzeler after a 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Nottingham Forest sparked doubts over his Brighton future for the first time. Now three games without defeat following two victories in two games against Chelsea and a comfortable 4-0 thrashing of struggling Southampton, those at The Amex will have their sights set on the European places once again.

Crucially, after shipping seven at Forest, Brighton have conceded just once in their last three games in all competitions – keeping clean sheets against both Chelsea and Southampton last time out.

There will, of course, still be some concerns over the nature of that Forest defeat but such a thrashing represents a blip rather than a growing trend under Hurzeler at this stage. And it’s a blip which The Amex are unlikely to see again if the Seagulls welcome one particular summer target.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Brighton are now keen to sign Rav van den Berg ahead of arch-rivals Crystal Palace this summer. The Middlesbrough defender has impressed once again in the Championship this season even as Michael Carrick’s side continue to slip away from their play-off ambitions.

Brighton now very keen on double swoop for Championship "top prospects"

The teenage sensations have also caught the eye of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

Brighton, meanwhile, could certainly do with a long-term replacement for Lewis Dunk which Van den Berg would instantly provide. At just 20 years old, the Dutchman would become the future of Hurzeler’s backline alongside January arrival Eiran Cashin. Dealing Palace a transfer blow also wouldn’t go amiss in Sussex this summer, either.

"Terrific" Van den Berg could replace Dunk

As important as Dunk is, there’s no escaping from the fact that he’s 33 years old and gradually moving past the peak of his powers as a result. It’s something that Brighton will not want to be underprepared for given just how difficult it will be to replace their captain, making Van den Berg’s arrival all the more crucial this summer.

Rav van den Berg in action for Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.

The 20-year-old has often found himself at the centre of praise throughout his time at Middlesbrough, including from Carrick. The Boro boss told reporters last season: “He’s a terrific individual, really grounded and humble, terrific character and great attitude. He has a real calming influence but quite sure of himself in a really good way.

“I think he told me he’d played right-back once before before Betis when Tommy got injured in pre-season. And he’s never played left-back in his life and ended up playing there against Sheffield Wednesday. He just has the ability to do that, he’s a really good footballer, he’s clever, sharp, hungry, he has a great attitude.”

A season on, Van den Berg has continued to impress and could yet have earned himself a move to the Premier League this summer as a result.

Harry Brook's third century secures slender lead after spinners turn screw

Abrar, Nauman threaten with breakthroughs but Foakes and tail secure useful advantage

Stumps Harry Brook made the third hundred of his extraordinary series as England took a 50-run first-innings lead on the second day of their third and final Test against Pakistan. Nauman Ali and Abrar Ahmed shared eight wickets between them but were made to toil on a slow, dry pitch, bowling 64.4 out of the 81.4 overs in England’s innings.Pakistan’s openers, Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood, had cut the deficit to 29 runs by the close, seeing out nine overs of spin. On Monday, they will look to set England a challenging fourth-innings target as they attempt to avoid being whitewashed on home soil for the first time.Brook reached three figures in the afternoon session with a back-foot punch through the covers off Abrar, prompting a standing ovation from Karachi’s National Stadium and the England balcony. He added 117 in a vital sixth-wicket stand with Ben Foakes, who made a watchful 64 in his first innings of the tour.Brook’s afternoon had started in calamity as he ran out his captain, Ben Stokes, in the second over after lunch. Brook worked Mohammad Wasim into the leg side and initially started coming back for a third run when Azhar Ali prepared to throw the ball in from deep midwicket, but scurried back to the keeper’s end with Stokes already charging down towards him.Related

As Wasim whipped the bails off at the other end, Brook managed to sneak his bat over the popping crease just before Stokes, who responded by throwing his head back before giving Brook a calm thumbs up, as if to exonerate him for his role in the mix-up. At that stage, England were 145 for 5 and still trailing by 159 runs on first innings. But Brook pressed on unfazed, rifling a pull through the leg side off Abrar to get his innings back up and running and reaching a 73-ball half-century with a top-edged sweep. He found an able partner in Foakes, who overturned an early decision that went against him and calmly rotated the strike through the afternoon session.Foakes was given out on 9 when struck on the pad by Abrar’s wrong’un, as the ball popped up to short leg. He was unsure whether he had been given out caught or leg-before, but in the event, he survived on both fronts: there was no inside edge, and ball-tracking technology predicted the ball would have missed his leg stump.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

By the second drinks break, Pakistan had gone flat in the field and Brook recognised he had the opportunity to cash in. He pumped Abrar back over his head for a straight six and looked at ease against both spinners, reaching a fluent hundred off 133 balls by standing tall and crunching Abrar through extra cover.Brook’s hundred was his third of his nascent Test career, in only his sixth innings. When he passed 94, Brook also broke Alastair Cook’s record (450 runs in 2015/16) for the most runs by an Englishman in an overseas Test series against Pakistan. He eventually fell for 111, trapped lbw by Wasim – his maiden Test wicket on debut – as the ball began to reverse.England lost another wicket shortly after, as Rehan Ahmed hacked his third ball to short midwicket, but Mark Wood made a handy 35 in a 51-run stand with Foakes and a last-wicket partnership worth 30 between Jack Leach and Ollie Robinson meant Pakistan faced a significant deficit.Earlier, with the pitch showing more signs of variable bounce on the second day, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope had looked comfortable in bringing up a 50-run stand for the second wicket. Wasim, on debut, conceded three early boundaries and was whisked out of the attack by Mohammad Rizwan, who stood in as captain for the first hour with Babar suffering from a headache.Faheem Ashraf, the other seamer in the Pakistan line-up, bowled a solitary over in the day. Pope was busy, nudging singles and punching either side of the wicket, while Duckett continued to sweep regularly as he has throughout the tour and brought up a 50 partnership when skipping down to loft Abrar back over his head for a straight six.Ben Foakes made an important half-century•Getty Images

It was Nauman, the left-arm spinner, who made the breakthrough. He found sharp spin from outside Duckett’s off stump, trapping him on the pad as he hung back rather than coming forward to a full ball. He was given out and reviewed the on-field decision in the hope that the ball had struck him outside the line of off stump, but ball-tracking technology gave an ‘umpire’s call’ verdict on impact. And Nauman struck again with his next ball to continue Joe Root’s lean run on this tour. Bowling from around the wicket, he drew Root forwards with a full ball that turned away from the bat, and Root’s tentative push flew to Salman Ali Agha at slip. He held onto a sharp, low chance just above the turf, leaving England 58 for 3.That brought Brook to the crease, who calmly worked the hat-trick ball into the off side and made his intentions clear by skipping down the pitch to the sixth delivery he faced, swinging Abrar high and mighty back over his head for six.Brook survived a review for lbw when trapped on the crease by Abrar – with Babar back on the field to send it upstairs – but Pakistan’s legspinner was undeterred. No sooner had Pope reached his third half-century of the tour by slashing Nauman through point, he lost his off stump. Hanging back to combat the low bounce, he was beaten by Abrar’s fizzing legbreak and could only shake his head in disbelief.Brook swung Abrar back over his head for six more later in the same over, bringing up another milestone for Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum’s team. It was England’s 88th six in men’s Tests in 2022, breaking India’s 2021 record for the most sixes by a team in a calendar year (where data is available).

The largest sports stadiums in the world as Man Utd plan 100k-seater arena

Manchester United have recently announced plans for a brand-new 100,000-seater stadium to replace their long-time home of Old Trafford.

Already the largest club stadium in England, the Theatre of Dreams has been United’s home since 1910, but their 115-year stay looks set to come to an end within five years, should construction of their new ground go to plan.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe hailed the new plans, as he aims to oversee the creation of the “most iconic football stadium in the world”.

He said (via BBC Sport): “Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest stadium.

“Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the arenas in world sport.

“I think we may well finish up with the most iconic football stadium in the world.”

The 10 Biggest Football Stadiums in the World in 2024 (Ranked)

The initial images (which can be seen here), certainly suggest it will make for memorable viewing, though perhaps the proof will be in the pudding when it comes to its future legacy among sports stadiums.

It would become the UK’s largest football arena, but where would it rank across the sporting world? Here is a list of the biggest sports stadiums by seated capacity, with one sport dominating.

6 of the worst things Sir Jim Ratcliffe has done at Man Utd

Ratcliffe has been ruling with an iron fist.

ByBarney Lane Feb 26, 2025 12 Melbourne Cricket Ground (cricket) Capacity: 100,024

One of the oldest stadiums still in use today, the MCG has hosted several sports since opening in the mid-19th century.

Currently home to six Australian Football League teams and several cricket sides including Australia’s cricket teams, it also hosts international football for the country’s men’s and women’s sides.

Seating just over 100,000 when full, it has hosted many international events in its long history, including the Summer Olympics in 1956, and will host an NFL match featuring the Los Angeles Rams next year.

11 Bryant-Denny Stadium (American football) Capacity: 100,077

Holding slightly more than the MCG is Alabama Crimson Tide’s Bryant-Denny Stadium, which has hosted college-level American football since 1929.

College American football stadiums are among the largest in the United States – 8 of the 12 largest arenas in the sporting world are college stadiums.

The largest NFL stadium is currently the MetLife Stadium – home to the New York Giants and New York Jets – which will host the 2026 World Cup final with a capacity of 82,500.

Every newly built Premier League stadium – ranked

The Premier League has seen plenty of new grounds since its formation in 1992.

ByBarney Lane Mar 6, 2025 10 Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium (American football) Capacity: 100,119

Home to the NCAA’s Texas Longhorns, their 100k-plus-seater stadium is the second-largest in Texas.

The Texas Longhorns have played there since 1924, when capacity was quickly raised to 40,000, before multiple renovations have led to it becoming one of the largest sports stadiums in the world.

Despite its capacity, an attendance of over 105,000 was recorded in October 2024.

9 Neyland Stadium (American football) Capacity: 101,915

The Tennessee Volunteers’ Neyland Stadium hosts close to 102,000, and has been their home for over 100 years.

The stadium is arguably the best ‘fortress’ in the sport, with no college football team winning more often at their current home ground.

Its record attendance was set in 2004, when a match against rivals Florida Gators drew in just over 109,000 spectators.

8 Tiger Stadium (American football) Capacity: 102,321

Louisiana’s largest football stadium is home to the LSU Tigers, with the Tiger Stadium hosting their games for little over a century.

Famed for its atmosphere on matchday, the Tiger Stadium has sold out several times since its most recent expansion took its capacity into six figures, proving the appetite for college football in Louisiana in case it was ever needed.

7 Kyle Field (American football) Capacity: 102,733

Texas’ largest stadium is Texas A&M University’s Kyle Field, which can host nearly enough supporters to fill Newcastle United’s St James Park twice over.

As much as 110,000 people have flocked to Kyle Field for sport and music concerts, with attendance records breaking multiple times last year.

With a population of over 31 million alone, Texas certainly has plenty of large arenas fit for its football fanatics.

6 Ohio Stadium (American football) Capacity: 102,780

Situated in the state capital of Columbus, the Ohio State Buckeyes’ Ohio Stadium is marginally ahead as America’s third-largest sports stadium.

There is a football (soccer) connection to this stadium, as Major League Soccer franchise Columbus Crew played their first games here until 1998, when they moved into their own home.

Their opening match only drew in around 25,000 spectators – not bad for the brand new football league, but this would have left vast amounts of empty seats in a stadium which could hold about 90,000 at the time.

Ranking the best former Premier League stadiums

With a new age of football stadia emerging since the Premier League’s beginnings in the 1990s, we have said goodbye to some truly magical venues.

ByBarney Lane Mar 6, 2025 5 Camp Nou (football) Expected capacity: 105,000

We’re cheating slightly to include the soon-to-be renovated Camp Nou in Barcelona, which is set to become football’s largest club stadium.

Already close to 100,000 seats before work started on upgrading the ground in the summer of 2023, the work on Camp Nou is set to modernise the stadium, with the team set to return next season.

It was hoped that Barcelona could play at Camp Nou before the 2024/25 campaign finishes, but it looks as though their temporary home in Montjuic will remain so at least until the end of the season.

This means Manchester United won’t be able to claim as having Europe’s biggest football stadium once their new ground is completed.

The Top 11 El Clásico Goalscorers This Century

Who has scored the most often in El Clásico since 2000?

1 ByBarney Lane May 10, 2025 4 Beaver Stadium (American football) Capacity: 107,282

Home to the Penn State Littany Lions, Beaver Stadium is the second-largest American football stadium in the United States.

The ground is named after James A. Beaver, a Pennsylvanian governor who was on the university’s board in the late 1800s.

Moving there in 1960, Penn State broke attendance records in November 2024, though they left many of the 111,000 supporters frustrated by losing to rivals Ohio State.

3 Michigan Stadium (American football) Capacity: 107,601

North America’s largest sports stadium, the Michigan Stadium is home to the Michigan Wolverines, who hold the record for the most wins in college football.

It is therefore quite fitting they have the largest stadium, even if by only a few hundred seats or so. Since opening in 1927, the ground has also played host to hockey and lacrosse.

European football clubs have occasionally played pre-season friendlies at Michigan Stadium, with over 109,000 watching Manchester United take on Real Madrid in August 2014.

Australia could pick third spinner instead of Starc, if Green is fit

Both Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green are not yet 100%, as Australia wait to see how they shape up on the eve of the Test

Alex Malcolm16-Feb-2023

Australia are sweating on the fitness of Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc before finalising their side for the second Test in Delhi starting on Friday, captain Pat Cummins revealed. Both Green and Starc trained fully on Wednesday as they continue their recoveries from their respective finger injuries but neither is at 100%.Cummins said no decision had been made on the composition of Australia’s XI as the selectors wait to see how Green and Starc recover later on Thursday.Related

Cummins: 'I don't think we need to reinvent the wheel'

Should Australia risk Cameron Green in the XI? Is there room for a third spinner?

Starc 'still lacking a bit of strength', touch and go to be ready for Delhi Test

Matt Kuhnemann called up as Australia face selection headaches

“Starcy and Green had good sessions yesterday and we will assess them later on today,” Cummins said on Thursday. “We don’t have a line through them yet, we’ll see.”Green is pivotal to Australia’s side given he provides a genuine fifth bowling option and also opens the door for three spinners to play in Delhi.Bowling is not an issue for Green but his batting and fielding remain a concern. He has not faced a fast bowler since he had surgery to repair his broken index finger after the Boxing Day Test. He batted for over an hour in the Arun Jaitley Stadium nets on Wednesday and faced throwdowns at full pace for the first time from Australia’s batting coach Michael Di Venuto as well as a lot of spin bowlers.Green also only caught hard cricket balls for the first time on Wednesday since breaking his finger on December 27 last year. They were also relatively gently-hit outfield catches before he returned to catching softer balls. If Green plays, he will be well short of 100% and Cummins’ conceded that it is a risk the selectors are carefully considering given his long-term importance to Australian cricket.”Having a right-hander helps and him providing our fifth bowling option also helps,” Cummins said. “He’s a big player. It certainly helps the team function well from batting and bowling.”You have got to be able to perform as well. He’s still coming back from that injury. He’s only had [one] session where he’s catching with a hard ball. He had a really good session yesterday. We will see how he pulls up.”If Green is able to play, Cummins confirmed Australia are considering playing a third spinner in a five-man attack instead of Starc, even if Starc is passed fit to play.”I think there’s a conversation,” Cummins said. “We’ll work that out by the end of today, I hope.”He’s one of the world’s premier bowlers in these types of conditions. We’ll see. As I said, the wicket looks like it might turn a little bit. I thought last week with two pacers, that attack functioned quite well but I think whether it’s Starcy, another spinner, Scott [Boland], variety in the attack does help.”Matthew Kuhnemann could be in line for his Test debut•Getty Images

Who will be the third spinner? Agar or Kuhnemann?Cummins wouldn’t reveal which spinner would join offspinners Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy. Ashton Agar was the first-choice left-arm spinner on the tour and the incumbent second spinner in the team in the last Test of the home summer but bowled himself out of the side in the training camp in Bengaluru. He has subsequently bowled better in the centre-wicket practice after the Nagpur Test but he is now competing with Queensland left-arm orthodox Matthew Kuhnemann who could make a shock Test debut having flown into Delhi as a replacement for Mitchell Swepson, who left the tour for the birth of his first child.”We’re open to both options,” Cummins said. “We’re really confident both will do a fantastic job out there. They both had long sessions the last couple of days and looked awesome. If we wanted a third spinner variety we’d be comfortable with either of those two.”Given Australia’s horses-for-courses mentality, David Warner’s record in India has been a topic of concern following his twin failures in Nagpur. Cummins did not explicitly confirm that he would play but he was confident he would be in the XI and would find a method to succeed after being pinned down by R Ashwin for 10 off 41 deliveries in the second innings in Nagpur.”I’m not a selector. I don’t think they’ve had a meeting but I’m sure Davey will be there,” Cummins said. “You saw [last] year at the Boxing Day Test when he puts pressure back on the opposition, he’s pretty hard to bowl to. You don’t get as many good balls, so he knows that. I’m sure that’d be part of his plan. He has been batting really well here. Even in the lead-up, I thought he was fantastic. I know there’s a lot of talk about spin bowling through the middle but with that new ball it’s sometimes the hardest time to bat as well.”Cummins also revealed that Travis Head remains in the conversation to return to the side after he was sensationally dropped for the first Test in Nagpur due to his relatively poor record against spin bowling on the subcontinent. Head’s value with the ball gives him a chance of a recall if Green doesn’t play, as Australia did not get much out of their fifth bowling option in Marnus Labuschagne during the first Test. Cummins was full of praise for how Head had handled his omission.”Trav has been awesome,” Cummins said. “[He’s] been working really hard out the back on his game. He’s been fantastic around the squad like he always is. There’s always plenty of fun wherever Heady is. He’s absolutely part of the conversations for this Test, just like the first Test so he couldn’t be doing any more. He’s been fantastic.”

He's better than Grealish: Man City ace who left for £0 is now worth £80m

As we approach the business end of the season, Manchester City still have plenty to play for.

Last weekend, despite leading twice through Erling Braut Håland and then Omar Marmoush, the Citizens were pegged back both times, ultimately held to a 2-2 draw by Brighton at the Etihad.

So, having taken just seven points from their last six Premier League fixtures, Pep Guardiola’s team are fifth, thereby occupying the final Champions League position, but with both Newcastle and Brighton a mere one point behind.

So, as many of the Sky Blues’ superstars continue to underperform, including Jack Grealish, perhaps they could regret letting go of a player who’s now worth £80m.

Why Jack Grealish isn't in Thomas Tuchel's England squad

Less than four years after moving to Manchester City for £100m, a then British transfer record, Grealish is now merely an afterthought at the Etihad.

Across the Citizens’ last seven Premier League fixtures, the 29-year-old’s involvement has been reduced to a one-minute cameo at Tottenham, an unused substitute for the fifth time during this period on Saturday, his most recent league start coming before Christmas.

Well, considering Grealish has scored only two goals this season, going 392 days without a club goal, before converting a penalty against Salford, it’s easy to understand why Guardiola doesn’t pick him regularly.

Last week, there was widespread uproar when Thomas Tuchel announced his first-ever England squad, but not in relation to the fact Grealish wasn’t included, considering he featured in only four of their 17 internationals during 2024, most infamously left out of Gareth Southgate’s Euros squad.

Tuchel said at his press conference, “I love Jack, I love everything about him”, but added “he simply has no rhythm…Jack gets better and better the more minutes he plays”, suggesting he won’t pick him if he continues to be used sporadically at club level.

So, while a current Man City wide-man continues to struggle, a former Man City youngster, and future England superstar, continues to make the Sky Blues look foolish for allowing him to leave for free as a teenager.

Former Man City academy star shining abroad

Jamie Gittens, formerly Jamie Bynoe-Gittens prior a summer re-brand, bounced around various English academies, spending time at Reading, Chelsea and then Manchester City, joining the Citizens as a 14-year-old.

However, he left Manchester just two years later, joining Borussia Dortmund in 2020, saying he wanted to follow the same path as Jadon Sancho, stating “I wanted to be like him”, adding “seeing other players before me doing it [moving abroad] persuaded me that I could try that as well”.

Well, this move has certainly worked out, given that the 20-year-old has now made 98 senior appearances for die Schwarzgelben, scoring 16 goals and providing ten assists, most notably on target against Bayern Munich in der Klassiker in November.

After being presented with the Golden Boy award in December 2023, Jude Bellingham described his former teammate as a “top talent”, while Fabrizio Romano labelled him ‘special’.

Meantime, former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes Gittens is every defender’s “worst nightmare”, while Saul Morris of Football Talent Scout describes him as an ‘attacking and direct winger’ who has ‘extremely high’ potential and will one day ‘establish himself in the England team’.

So, let’s assess how Gittens compares to the aforementioned Grealish this season.

In this season’s Champions League, Gittens ranks seventh for goals – xG, with Grealish down in 181st, while the 20-year-old ranks sixth in the Bundesliga for the same metric, with the Man City man is 481st in the Premier League in terms of this statistic.

According to a report by Samuel Meade for the Daily Mirror, Dortmund value Gittens at £80m, with Arsenal and Chelsea supposedly interested, underlining that Man City made a major mistake allowing him to leave.
