The new project is aiming to make the 130kph barrier in women’s cricket a realistic mark not just to breach, but to maintain

It is billed as one of the new frontiers for female cricket. Who will be the first bowler to break 130kph?There needs to be a few caveats here in that it might have already happened, but until reasonably recently, speed data in the women’s game had not been widely collated and is still not uniform across competitions.However, from currently available numbers, South Africa’s Shabnim Ismail, who is regarded as one of the quickest around, is reported as being clocked at 128kph and sent down a delivery at 126.7kph against Australia at the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia.The former Australia quick Sharon Tredrea, who played in the 1970s and 1980s, is regarded as one of the fastest to have played the game and there are mentions of her saying she was clocked at 133kph/83mph although evidence is slim.Now Project130, a partnership between Cricket New South Wales and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), as part of their new Cricket Lab initiative which will see the NSW set-up work with the university on a number of collaborations, is aiming to make the 130kph barrier a realistic mark not just to breach, but then to maintain.Described as “designed to improve the potential of female fast bowlers, with the end game of moving from bowling an average of 115kmh to 130kmh” it will be “a world first research project to develop a formative set of data which predicts potential and physiology type to increase speed and reduce injury risk.”One of the key figures behind the work is CNSW head of sports science and sports medicine Patrick Farhart. He says the evidence currently suggests the gap between male and female fast-bowling speeds is wider than other areas of high-performance sport. But he believes by studying areas including biomechanics, strength and power of those who operate at high pace, the key ingredients can be found with specialist training then put in place. There is also a desire to look outside of cricket and find athletes currently in other disciplines who may have the raw attributes for the sport.”There are some bowlers who have gone close to that 130kph,” Farhart told ESPNcricinfo. “For me this is something I think is achievable..once we are able to profile what the correlations are with high speeds then we can start to look at setting in place more individualised and targeted programmes around getting bowlers to improve their speed.South Africa’s Shabnim Ismail is among the fastest bowlers in women’s cricket•Associated Press

“It’s very dependent on your action, it’s very specific to an individual at the moment. Males will tend to generate bowling speed through linear momentum, we think, and we think that a lot of females – not all – will generate bowling speed from upper body, trunk momentum.”However, I think we are seeing changes in the female game now where a lot of the girls are starting to bowl with techniques which males are using and this wasn’t happening anywhere near as much 10-12 years ago. Girls generating momentum through run-up speed, a braced front leg, that’s starting to happen a lot more now.”Tayla Vlaeminck, who is currently injured, and Darcie Brown – the latter clocked around 122-125kph in WBBL and international cricket – are among the fastest in Australia. Elsewhere in the world, England’s Issy Wong has made no secret of wanting to set a new bar for pace bowling and New Zealand’s Lea Tahuhu has been among the quickest for much of her career. New South Wales and Australia quick bowler Stella Campbell is another of the current generation who has been clocked over 120kph.”I think we aren’t far off [130kph] already looking at the crop of fast bowlers we have in the game,” Campbell said. “We are already pushing those speeds. It’s always out there and you are trying to get that competitive edge where you can.”Rachael Haynes, who announced her international and state retirement last week, highlighted pace bowling as one of the areas that had developed most during her career.”I think in the past there’s always probably been a handful of quick bowlers and you might not necessarily have to come up against them all the time,” she said. “I think it’s really exciting for the game as well. Their skill is pretty evident to see too, players who can swing the ball and bowl quick bouncers – it’s uncomfortable, but it’s exciting to watch. Pieter Malan, the South Africa top-order batter, has signed as one of Middlesex’s overseas players for the whole of the 2023 season.Malan, 33, helped Middlesex secure promotion from Division Two of the County Championship last summer, as well as featuring in the Royal London Cup. He scored 200 runs in six red-ball innings after joining as a replacement for Peter Handscomb, including 93 away to Worcestershire to confirm Middlesex’s second-place finish, and 394 at 65.66 in the 50-over competition.”We are thrilled that Pieter will be returning to Middlesex for the 2023 season,” Middlesex head of men’s performance cricket, Alan Coleman, said. “He made a huge impact in his time with the club this summer and we can’t wait to have him back in the home dressing room next year.”He brings not only a huge amount of quality and experience to the side, but also a real drive, passion, and commitment to succeed. Leeds United’s form in the Championship has been nothing short of exemplary, with Daniel Farke’s side now in pole position to secure promotion come the end of the season.

The German has built a side that has dominated many sides in the division, as demonstrated by their current unbeaten run which now stretches back to the start of December.

He’s made some shrewd additions to help him in his quest, including Joel Piroe who’s so often provided the goods at the top end of the pitch for the Whites.

The Dutchman cost £10m from Swansea City in the summer of 2023, taking the role of the club’s leading talisman this campaign, notching 14 goals and six assists in his 33 league outings.

Piroe has been aided in his attempts within the final third by one player who has taken the second tier by storm since his summer arrival in Yorkshire.

Ao Tanaka’s stats for Leeds in 2024/25

£3.5m is such a cheap fee in the modern game with mammoth fees constantly touted for various players all around the world as clubs look to strengthen in the transfer market.

Ao Tanaka joined the Whites for the aforementioned fee in the summer, looking to provide depth in the midfield department of Farke’s squad.

However, the Japanese star has exceeded beyond anyone’s wildest imagination, cementing his place within the starting lineup on a consistent basis, starting 25 times in 2024/25 to date.

Despite his deep-lying role, he’s popped up with some key moments in the final third, notching two assists and two goals – including a superb strike against Hull City back in January.

However, despite his stellar form at Elland Road over the last couple of months, he’s still valued lower than one player who’s struggled in parts despite the club’s current league standing.

The Leeds player who’s worth over 3x more than Tanaka

With promotion potentially on the cards, the club’s hierarchy may be keeping a distant eye on the summer transfer window and the business they might conduct should they return to the Premier League.

Farke has already built a squad capable of winning games in the second tier, but ultimately, additions and departures will be needed to achieve survival in the top-flight – something which many sides have struggled with in the last couple of years.

Illan Meslier could be one player who could find it difficult to maintain his starting role, often producing a catalogue of errors that have cost the Whites at various points of the campaign.

The Frenchman made a huge blunder against Sunderland in the final minute of the clash, costing Farke’s side two points – before also making multiple mistakes against Hull City, resulting in yet another draw.

He’s still managed to keep 20 clean sheets – the second-most in the division – but his mistakes have still cost them at times this year, something which could prove to be unforgivable should they achieve promotion.

Meslier, who’s been dubbed “inconsistent” by one analyst, has undoubtedly had his critics but has still seen an increase in market value on the £5m fee forked out for his signature multiple years ago.

The 24-year-old is now valued at £13m by Football Transfers, a figure that is over three times more than current star Tanaka who’s only valued at £3.5m – the same as the fee paid for his services six months ago.

Given the rise and his inconsistency so far under Farke, the German could be tempted into cashing in on Meslier over the summer, using the funds to land a more experienced goalkeeping option.

It would undoubtedly be a move that would divide opinions among the fanbase, but should he repeat any mistakes if the club were to get promoted, it could cost the Whites dearly – undoing all the hard work done by Farke since his appointment.

Leicester City have been scouting an “impressive” young striker over the past few weeks, but there may be competition for his signature from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace, according to a report.

Foxes hoping to avoid the drop

With a third of the Premier League season left to play, Leicester find themselves in a very precarious position, currently sitting two points from safety, having been on a torrid run of form since the end of 2024.

The Foxes have lost nine of their last ten league matches, most recently succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at home to title-hopefuls Arsenal, and they are now at serious risk of an immediate return to the Championship.

It can be difficult for clubs to plan for the summer when the division they will be in next season is still up in the air, but Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side have been linked with a couple of forwards over the past week.

Hertha BSC attacking midfielder Ibrahim Maza is one of the names on the shortlist, and a report from Denmark has now revealed Leicester have also been scouting FC Midtjylland striker Franculino Dju.

The relegation-threatened Premier League side are said to have sent officials to watch Dju in action a number of times in recent weeks, most recently conducting a scouting mission when Midtjylland took on Lyngby last weekend.

Should the east Midlands outfit formalise their interest this summer, there may be competition for his signature from Crystal Palace, who are also keen, while Bayer Leverkusen and Torino have previously been named as potential suitors.

Dju impressing in Denmark

The 20-year-old enjoyed a breakout season in the Danish Superliga last season, providing 11 goals and six assists, and he has since gone on to follow it up with another impressive campaign.

The Guinea-Bissau international has made 26 appearances in all competitions, amassing 10 goals, with one of those coming in the Europa League against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Although the forward is not currently plying his trade in one of Europe’s major leagues, it is still impressive he has emerged as a key player for Midtjylland at such a young age, having previously received praise from the media for his performances at youth level.

As such, Leicester should undoubtedly pursue a move for the starlet this summer, but their chances of winning the race for his signature are likely to hinge upon them retaining their Premier League status.

CRB RESPONDE E QUASE MARCA
A resposta do CRB veio aos 11 e 12 minutos. O primeiro lance foi uma cobrança de falta de Rafael Longuine. A explodiu na trave após falha do goleiro Pegorari. Na sequência, em cobrança de escanteio, Pegorari se redimiu ao fazer uma grande defesa em cabeçada de Gilvan.

ITUANO CRIA CHANCES, MAS NÃO MARCA
O time Paulista não se intimidou com as oportunidades criadas pelos alagoanos e foram para cima atrás do seu gol. Mas Dudu Vieira e Rafael Pereira acabaram parando no goleiro Diogo Silva. Em ambas as finalizações ele conseguiu espalmar e evitar o gol do Ituano.

CRB TAMBÉM ASSUSTA
Aos 34 minutos, o CRB devolveu os sustos do Ituano. Da entrada da área, Rafael Longuine conseguiu acertar um belíssimo chute de forma colocada, mas ele não contava que Pegorari estaria muito bem colocado. O goleiro espalmou no cantinho e garantiu que o jogo fosse empatado para o intervalo.

BOA OPORTUNIDADE DO CRB
A oportunidade mais clara no início da etapa complementar foi do CRB. Reginaldo fez bela jogada, chegou à linha de fundo e cruzou. Richard subiu bem e acertou cabeçada, mas Pegorari estava muito bem colocada para defender em dois tempos.

JOGO CAI DE RENDIMENTO
A partir dos 15 minutos da etapa final, o jogo caiu de rendimento e os dois times passaram a errar muitos passes e construir pouquíssimas chances de gol. As que eram criadas não levavam praticamente perigo ao gol do adversário.

ITUANO ABRE O PLACAR
Com a queda de rendimento de ambas as partidas, tudo indicava que o jogo acabaria mesmo empatado e com o torcedor sem ver a rede balançar. No entanto, aos 45 minutos, esse panorama foi alterado. Gerson Magrão bateu escanteio com veneno para dentro da área, o volante Jiménez cabeceou firme para marcar e abrir o marcador: 1 a 0 para o time Paulista.

CRB CONSEGUE PÊNALTI NO FIM E EMPATA O JOGO
O CRB foi para desespero nos acréscimos em busca do empate. Aos 51 minutos, Reginaldo foi deslocado dentro da área, o árbitro, com auxílio do VAR, marcou pênalti para os alagoanos. Após muita reclamação, aos 55 minutos, Anselmo Ramon soltou uma bomba no ângulo e igualou o marcador: 1 a 1, placar final.

Litton Das finally came out of his shell to get a superb half-century, Taskin Ahmed bowled an economical four-over spell with the new ball where he tested India’s top-order batters, and Mustafizur Rahman seemed to be in his groove at the death. Taskin and Nurul Hasan even smashed India’s bowlers around in the dying stages of that game, but ideally, Bangladesh’s middle order needs to do that job.Pakistan will be aware of these gaps in Bangladesh’s make-up. They recently met in Christchurch in a tri-series designed as a build-up for the World Cup; Pakistan beat Bangladesh both times, although they had to fight for the wins on either occasion.For Pakistan, there are worries, especially because of the low returns from Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan: across four games in this World Cup, their opening stands have given Pakistan 1, 13, 16 and 4. His knock of 52 from just 22 balls against South Africa took them from a difficult position to one of safety. Later, his two wickets in one over turned the game around for Pakistan. Shadab has quickly become a high-impact player, with an aggressive approach as a batter and accurate, stump-to-stump lines as a legspinner, apart from being a gun fielder. He has shown the ability to adapt to different situations, too, particularly in the batting order.It has not been a great World Cup so far for Nurul Hasan. He has made only 41 runs in four innings despite coming out to bat with 9 and 9.4 overs remaining in two of those. He has looked like he has pulled the trigger too early in his innings, or premeditating his shots. Nurul has also made errors as wicketkeeper, with the missed stumping against Zimbabwe standing out. وتغلب الأهلي على خصمه فاركو بستة أهداف دون مقابل، مساء الأربعاء، على ملعب استاد القاهرة.

وبفوزه أمام فاركو، حسم الأهلي لقب الدوري المصري لموسم 2024-2025 برصيد 58 نقطة، للمرة 45 في تاريخه.

وعبر حسابه الرسمي على “إنستجرام”، نشر كولر خلال يومياته صورة للجهاز الفني الحالي للنادي الأهلي، يظهر خلالها محمد يوسف وعماد النحاس ومحمد شوقي، بالإضافة لمدرب حراس المرمى ميشيل يانكون.
