Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya and Avesh Khan sparkle as India draw level

Chasing 170, South Africa were bowled out for 87, their lowest total in T20Is

Firdose Moonda17-Jun-20224:29

Steyn: Karthik will be among the first names in India’s T20 World Cup squad

Dinesh Karthik made his T20I debut in India’s first T20I match. In 2006. Before this format was played in bilateral series, before it had a World Cup, and before even the IPL.It has taken him 16 years and 36 matches but finally, he has his first half-century in the format. And he scored it in India’s biggest win over South Africa and fifth-biggest in T20Is, to leave the series locked 2-2 ahead of Sunday’s finale.Karthik’s milestone came in the final over, after a 65-run partnership, off just 33 balls, between Karthik and Hardik Pandya for the fifth wicket, which rejuvenated India after they came together at 81 for 4 in the 13th over. India scored 73 runs in their last five overs and finished on 169 for 6, which proved more than enough for their attack to defend. On a surface with uneven bounce, most of India’s line-up struggled, until Hardik and Karthik came together. Hardik took on the spinners and the slower balls while Karthik was severe on anything that offered width, and they took India to a competitive total, albeit one they may have assessed as perhaps slightly under-par at the halfway stage. But in response, South Africa’s line-up was not able to adapt to the pace of the pitch or India’s bowling and were dismissed for their lowest total in T20Is.They had one partnership of 20 but imploded from the moment their captain, Temba Bavuma, retired hurt with an elbow injury, and they lost their last five wickets for the addition of just 13 runs. Only three of their batters got into double figures. All of India’s bowlers, bar Hardik, conceded 5.25 runs to the over or less, but their stand-out was seamer Avesh Khan. He dismissed Dwaine Pretorius, who appears to have become a permanent pinch-hitter at No.3, in the final over of the powerplay, and then took three wickets in this third over to finish with career-best figures of 4 for 18.Here’s looking at you, Lungi
We haven’t seen him play competitively since March, and not in a T20I since last July, and it was worth the wait. Lungi Ngidi looks fitter than before and has been working on his variations. In his first four deliveries (not counting the wide he started with) he sent down a short ball, an inswinger and two slower balls before erring with a half-tracker that Ruturaj Gaikwad hit behind point for four. Ngidi adjusted immediately and sent down a back-of-a-length ball that seamed away from Gaikwad, who nicked off.His next over was laced with change-ups in length and pace and a demonstration in full commitment, when he fielded a drive from Ishan Kishan with his foot. Ngidi finished the over but left the field and returned later in the innings to deliver one over at the death, which ended up being the least expensive of the final three. He bowled the 19th and was pulled to square leg by Hardik for six, before Hardik top-edged him to deep backward point where Tabraiz Shamsi took a stunner. Ngidi conceded one boundary from the bat of Karthik but pulled it back to finish with a return of 2 for 20 in three overs.Dinesh Karthik’s maiden T20I fifty was instrumental in taking India to 169 for 6•AP Photo

Pant’s (not) on fire
It hasn’t been a good series for Rishabh Pant with the bat so far and, other than the lack of runs, what may concern him are the ways he has been getting out. In three of his four innings, Pant has been dismissed off wide deliveries outside the off stump, deliveries that could have been called wide had he left them alone. On this occasion, Pant got down on one knee to swipe a slower Keshav Maharaj ball over third man. He was early on the stroke and the ball ballooned to Dwaine Pretorius at short third man, strategically placed for exactly that. Maharaj celebrated like a plan had worked, because it had.Avesh Khan picked up four wickets including three in one over•BCCI

Bavuma’s body blows
Much like his opposite number, Bavuma also hasn’t seen the runs flow but his night ended worse than Pant’s when he had to retire hurt for his joint-lowest score of the series so far, 8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar began as he usually does, by moving the ball both ways, but he also got the ball to burst up from back of a length and surprise Bavuma, and then to keep low. In his second over, after Bavuma had again been deceived by one that kept low, Bhuvneshwar’s third delivery reared up and struck Bavuma on the left upper arm.He received treatment on field and decided to continue, which seemed a sensible idea when, two balls later, he creamed a drive through the off side. But at the end of that over, Bavuma scampered through for a risky single and dived to make his ground. His arm hit the turf, but he continued. He faced one more ball before needing attention on-field. It seemed as though Bavuma and the medical staff were discussing how comfortably he could hold the bat and whether he could generate power to hit the ball. Bavuma decided against carrying on and left the field. He was seen with an ice-pack in the dressing room shortly after. Later in the innings, Marco Jansen was hit behind the ear by an Avesh bouncer, and though he passed his concussion test, he was dismissed off the next ball.Chahal v Klaasen
In the first two T20I meetings between Heinrich Klaasen and Yuzvendra Chahal, in Centurion in 2018 and Cuttack last week, Klaasen scored 71 runs off 25 balls. But in their next two clashes, Klaasen has only nine runs off nine balls from Chahal and has been dismissed twice. So what’s happened? Well, the surfaces in Visakhapatnam and Rajkot have assisted spinners and Klaasen has been trying to attack Chahal outside off, without success. In the previous match, he reached for a full delivery to try to clear the off side and sent it to extra-cover and in this one, Klaasen was expecting the ball to turn away from him, as it did off the previous delivery, and set up for the sweep, but the ball went straight on and struck him on the front pad. He reviewed but replays showed it was going on to hit leg stump. Klaasen’s dismissal left South Africa 45 for 3 and prompted the collapse that cost them the game.

Wolves could land dream Guedes replacement who’s a "handful for defenders"

Vitor Pereira’s time at Wolverhampton Wanderers so far has been something of a success. It was a poor start to the season for the Old Gold, who found themselves in the relegation zone for the majority of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

However, their new boss, Pereira, has turned things around in what was a season that seemed destined to end in relegation. His side have won two games, drawn one and lost one so far during his tenure, with the best performance arguably being a 2-0 win over Manchester United.

Matheus Cunha

The entire Wolves squad certainly seems rejuvenated since Pereira took charge. One of the payers who seems to have a new lease of life is Goncalo Guedes.

Guedes’ 2024/25 season

It has been a bit of a mixed bag so far for Guedes in the 2024/25 campaign. Under former manager Gary O’Neil, he was a bit part player and did not really get many opportunities from the start. Having said that, his Premier League record for the season under the former Wolves boss was good, with four goals and assists.

Under the new Old Gold manager Pereira, who, like Guedes, comes from Portugal, he has started three out of four games and made one appearance off the bench.

In the first game of his tenure, Guedes scored and assisted in a 3-0 win away to Leicester City. His tally for the season is now two goals and four assists in 17 games.

In Wolves’ most recent game against Nottingham Forest at Molineux, the former Barcelona star struggled, and showed the kind of form he was in under O’Neil.

He received a 5/10 from Charlie Haffenden, a journalist for Birmingham World. He was critical of the fact Guedes lost the ball in the lead-up to Forest’s opener, scored by Morgan Gibbs-White.

Goncalo Guedes

With inconsistencies like that from Guedes, it might be a concern for Pereira, who will need players to sustain good form for longer. The Portuguese boss might well want to bring in a new signing to play as one of those number 10s, who can perhaps replace Guedes long-term.

They have been linked with one player who could be the answer.

Wolves’ dream Guedes replacement

The player in question here is Newcastle United star Miguel Almiron. As reported earlier this week, the Old Gold are one of three Premier League clubs who have been offered the chance to sign him this winter.

They are likely to face competition from fellow top-flight strugglers Crystal Palace and Leicester for his signature. In terms of a price for the Paraguayan winger, he could cost upwards of £21m this January.

There is an argument to suggest that Almiron would not be much of an upgrade on Guedes given the fact he has yet to score or assist this season in 11 games in the Premier League. Eddie Howe has played him for just 136 top-flight minutes this term.

With that being said, there is clear evidence that Almiron can explode in the Premier League when given a chance. The Paraguayan forward once scored 11 goals and grabbed two assists in 34 games across a single season, in 2022/23.

That far exceeds Guedes’ best campaign in the English top flight, the current campaign where he has six goal involvements. Statistically, when comparing the two seasons via Squawka, they are actually fairly similar.

The pair draw level when it comes to the number of goals per 90 minutes, with 0.4 each. However, Almiron’s ball-carrying ability stands out. In 2022.23, he averaged 1.4 completed take-ons per game compared to Guedes’ 0.6 this season. The Newcastle star also averages more ball recoveries, with 5 compared to 3.6 for the Old Gold attacker.

Perhaps adding Almiron to that squad, ultimately replacing Guedes – who has been linked with a January exit in recent months – would add a little bit more attacking threat to this Wolves side. As football statistician Statman Dave said, he can be a “handful for defenders”.

Whilst they are close in their goal involvement numbers per game, the Paraguayan can go on a fruitful run, as he has shown previously.

For £21m, this seems like a really smart investment and one that could help Wolves survive the drop and build on that in the seasons to come under Pereira.

Allen, Latham, Bracewell help New Zealand seal series after bowlers' show

Dockrell’s highest ODI score, Adair’s double-strike at the start of the chase in vain for Ireland

A dominant bowling performance from New Zealand pinned down Ireland to 216 and helped the visitors sew up the three-match ODI series, with one game to go. Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips shared the spoils for New Zealand. That Ireland passed 200, on a Malahide track that favoured both the seamers and spinners, was largely down to George Dockrell’s counterattacking 61-ball 74 – his highest score in ODI cricket – and Mark Adair’s unbeaten 27 off 15 balls.Adair then let it rip with the ball, castling Martin Guptill and Will Young for ducks with his first two deliveries. Guptill was yorked first ball and then Young was bowled by a full nip-backer. Finn Allen and Tom Latham then settled the chase with half-centuries, but New Zealand still needed a cameo from Bracewell (42* off 40 balls) to finish it off. He did so in grand style once again, launching a six over mid-on.Related

Bracewell turns on Beast mode to script Malahide miracle

With Adair and co. also zipping the new ball around, Allen, who usually loves bat on ball, had to rein himself in. He was on 6 off 18 balls at one point but found the release when he fetched a hip-high short ball from outside off and pulled Craig Young to the square-leg boundary. And when Adair erred too full, Allen pumped him for four successive boundaries, including a six over mid-off, in the ninth over. Allen powered to his maiden ODI fifty, in his second game, off 47 balls. However, when he looked good for more, he toe-ended Curtis Campher to mid-on for 60 off 58 balls. His dismissal snapped a 101-run third-wicket partnership with Latham.Latham was the more circumspect of the two, often cautiously hiding his bat inside the line when Ireland moved the ball away from him and hitting through the line when the ball was in his arc. Andy McBrine and Simi Singh both tested Latham and it was Simi who trapped him lbw for 55 off 71 balls. Phillips then chopped on for a run-a-ball 16, but Bracewell coolly closed it out for New Zealand after having set it up for them with the ball.Bracewell and Santner bowled 20 overs between them in the afternoon, claiming 4 for 58. Bracewell, in particular, made the most of the grip, turn and bounce that was on offer, ending with 10-1-26-2 – the most-economical ten-over spell by a New Zealand spinner since Daniel Vettori’s 4 for 18 against Afghanistan in Napier in the 2015 World Cup.After overnight and early-morning rains delayed the start by half an hour, it was Henry who had set the tone for New Zealand by swinging and seaming the new ball. The mandatory powerplay, in which Ireland managed only 19 for 2, was straight out of a passage of play from Test cricket. Henry relentlessly plugged away in the channel outside off, as did Duffy, who was making his ODI debut at the expense of Lockie Ferguson, threatening both the outside and inside edges.Believe it or not, Henry’s powerplay analysis read 5-3-4-2. He struck in the very first over when he swung a full ball into a crease-bound Paul Stirling’s back pad in a wicket-maiden. Andy Balbirnie misjudged a similar inswinger and watched it thud into the bails after he offered no shot. Much like Henry, Duffy began his shift with a maiden but unlike Henry he extracted significant extra bounce.Ireland needed 21 balls to get off the mark and 57 balls to find the fence. It was McBrine who ended the boundary drought when he belted Duffy through the covers. In the next over, bowled by Henry, McBrine hit two more fours to briefly repair the innings.McBrine scored 28 off 48 balls before Bracewell pushed an offbreak well wide of off stump and had him stumped. It was Bracewell’s second wicket of the day. He had stuck in his first over, too, when he had an advancing Harry Tector slicing a catch to long-on.George Dockrell stood out for Ireland with his ODI best of 74•Sportsfile/Getty Images

Bracewell, who was introduced into the attack in the 13th over ahead of Santner, showed control with his lengths and lines, something that was missing in the Test series in England and also in the first ODI against Ireland.Santner, who was brought into the attack in the 20th over, marked his return from a bout of Covid-19 with a beauty that drifted in and turned sharply past the outside edge of Campher. After turning another stock ball past Campher’s bat, he found the outside edge by shifting wide on the crease in the 28th over. When part-time offspinner Phillips removed Loran Tucker for 19, Ireland were 126 for 6 in the 37th over.Dockrell and Simi got together at this point and struck up a 59-run seventh-wicket stand off 48 balls. After seeing off threatening spells from Bracewell and Santner, Dockrell lined up the seamers by regularly manufacturing swinging room and lifting the ball over the off-side infield. That the ball had now stopped swinging for Henry, Duffy and Blair Tickner also aided Dockrell. He notched up his third ODI fifty off 48 balls and celebrated it with a sequence of 4,4,4, 6 in six balls; the highlight being the straight six off Santner in the 44th over.In the next over, however, Dockrell holed out to long-on to give Duffy his first ODI scalp. Simi rode his luck – he survived a tight stumping on 11 – and miscued a brace of reverse-sweeps before he was run-out for 16. Santner capped his spell by having Craig Young nicking behind to Latham for a duck.Ireland, ultimately, folded in 48 overs and there would be no way back for them, despite Adair’s two-in-two at the start of their defence.

Estamos a melhorar e corrigir.

– A ausência do Vítor faz falta, lógico. A partir daí, comandamos a equipe. O resultado correu bem.

Glenn Maxwell added to Australia Test squad after Travis Head joins injury list

Australia need to rejig their middle order if Head isn’t available for the Galle Test

Glenn Maxwell has been added to Australia’s Test squad ahead of the opening match against Sri Lanka in Galle after Travis Head joined a lengthy injury list with a hamstring strain which has ruled him out of the final ODI.It means the prospect of Maxwell playing his first Test since 2017, against Bangladesh in Chattogram, and his first first-class match since 2019 if he is included for the game next Wednesday. All seven of his Tests have come on the subcontinent with a top score of 104 against India in Ranchi. Before the tour, national George Bailey kept the door open for Maxwell’s return. He has been in good touch during the ODIs with a match-winning unbeaten 80 in the opening game followed by 30 and 33.”We know Glenn has had some red-ball success in these types of conditions and we’re looking forward to him getting back and playing a good block of cricket through the T20s and one-day cricket,” Bailey said. “If he shoots the lights out or anyone else does particularly well, there’s always going to be opportunities.”Earlier in the trip, Maxwell said he understood why he was not part of the Test squad but had not given up hope of getting another chance”A guy that hasn’t played any first-class cricket would be a random pick,” he told . “I know it’s specific to my skillset and the way I play slow bowling, especially in these conditions, that might have been something to sway them.”But I think the way they’ve shown faith in their current squad is brilliant. It’s nice that the door’s not closed but I also thought it was nice that they showed faith in that squad.”Head sustained his injury late in the fourth match and has just six days to recover before the first Test in Galle. GPS data showed that Head had run 26km in the field across the third and fourth matches of the series. The strain is said to be on the minor side, but if he is not available for the opening game next Wednesday, it would require Australia to rejig their middle order.Related

Starc won't risk Test chances by making quick return in Sri Lanka

Warning signs for Australia ahead of litmus test against spin in Galle

Maxwell has been called up ahead of any of the Australia A batters who have been taking part in the four-day matches against Sri Lanka which includes Marcus Harris, Matt Renshaw and Nic Maddinson. However, three spinners from the A squad – Jon Holland, Matthew Kuhnemann and Todd Murphy – will remain in Sri Lanka with the Test squad to assist with preparations and to further their development. Kuhnemann has already been part of the ODI squad following Ashton Agar’s side injury and if Australia opt for three spinners during the Tests there could be further chance for promotion.Holland, 35, who has played four Tests, was a late addition to the Australia A squad after Kuhuemann was brought across to the one-day set-up.Travis Head has just six days to recover before the first Test in Galle•Getty Images

Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc also continues to be unavailable due to the stitching in his finger which he cut on the spike of his boot in the first T20I while Steven Smith, who has been nursing a quad strain, is unlikely to be risked ahead of the Tests.”[It’s a] bit more of a precaution,” Aaron Finch said of Head. “Especially, where he fields in the outfield, he does quite a lot of kilometres and the ground is quite heavy. Not sure what he’s looking like for the Test matches. Just one more to add to the list at the moment. Starcy is still not right with his finger. Where it is, the stitching is still not quite 100% healed. Without being able to bowl without tape on, he’ll be out as well.”Australia have endured a lengthy casualty list during the white-ball leg of the tour. Sean Abbott (broken finger) was ruled out before the matches began to be followed by Marsh who has since recovered from a calf strain, Kane Richardson (hamstring), Marcus Stoinis (side), and Agar (side) along with Starc and Smith.Reflecting on the ODI series, which Sri Lanka secured with their four-run victory two days ago, Finch picked out the fact Australia had not been able to build a big partnership to take them deep into the innings with plenty of wickets in hand as a deciding factor. They have fielded a long batting order in the last two matches with Cameron Green at No. 8.”Anytime we’ve started to get any momentum in the game, we lose a wicket and in these conditions, once you lose one, they go back-to-back pretty quick,” he said. “Think, just maximising that main partnership where you can get to the 40th over maybe three down, has hindered us a bit.”After Friday’s final ODI, Australia’s next 50-over cricket will be the series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand starting at home in late August. Unlike these matches against Sri Lanka, those contests will carry World Cup Super League points. There remains uncertainty whether their other home series, against South Africa in January, will go ahead after CSA requested for it to be moved, so they can launch their new T20 league.

Man City could sign "world-class" Rodri replacement by raiding Real Madrid

Manchester City are poised to be the biggest spenders of any club in this January transfer window.

The Sky Blues are closing in on deals to bring Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush to the Etihad, set to spend in excess of £120m on the trio.

This would see two defenders and a striker arrive, but Pep Guardiola would also surely like some midfield reinforcements too, given that this has been a problem position ever since Rodri ruptured his ACL against Arsenal in September, so could the Citizens land one of the best midfielders in the world?

Manchester City aiming to sign world-class midfielder

According to reports from Spain, Manchester City are “interested” in Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report reveals that an asking price for the player has been set by los Blancos and they would be looking to recoup the €80m (£67m) paid to Monaco for Tchouaméni’s services three years ago.

They are not actively looking to sell the Frenchman but would listen to offers.

Since moving to the Spanish capital, the 24-year-old has made 112 appearances for los Merengues, winning eight major trophies, including last season’s La Liga and Champions League double.

He has also quickly established himself as a key player for Didier Deschamps, starting five of France’s six matches at Euro 2024 as les Bleus reached the semi-finals, captaining his nation against Israel and Belgium in October, taking his tally to 38 caps.

Of late, due to long-term injuries suffered by Dani Carvajal, David Alaba and Éder Militão, Tchouaméni has been forced to fill-in at centre-back for Real Madrid, most-recently doing so in Sunday’s Supercopa de España Final, in which his side were smashed 5-2 by Barcelona in Jeddah.

Nevertheless, his best position is undoubtedly at the base of midfield, with journalist Muhammad Butt on Twitter describing him as “a world-class defensive midfielder”, adding that he’s an all-round “magnificent footballer”.

So, if he is on the market, it’s no surprise that Europe’s biggest clubs are chasing his signature.

Given that Rodri is the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, he is the gold standard for all defensive midfielders, especially at Man City, with İlkay Gündoğan and Mateo Kovačić struggling to fill the void vacated by the Spaniard since suffering a season-ending injury.

So, let’s see how Rodri and Tchouaméni compare.

Since the start of last season, Tchouaméni has racked up exactly 145 more minutes than Rodri for club and country, despite the fact the Spaniard has not seen any action since September, albeit this makes comparing the duo interesting.

Rodri’s figures when it comes to touches and attempted passes are both exponentially higher, but this is to be expected, considering how Man City and Spain play, so it’s impressive that, given that context, Tchouaméni’s passing accuracy metric is a mere 0.2% lower.

The Frenchman has the edge when it comes to interceptions as well as the percentage of aerial duals won, potentially due to the fact Carlo Ancelotti has been forced to deploy him as an emergency centre-back on countless occasions during this time frame.

Nevertheless, Tchouaméni’s numbers are comparable to Rodri’s across the board – notably in tackle percentage – which is really the biggest compliment one could give a defensive midfielder.

Thus, if Real Madrid are open to offers, Man City should break the bank to secure his signature.
