Bigger mistake than Zirkzee: Ashworth messed up offloading £25m Man Utd ace

Over the last couple of years, Manchester United’s transfer business has been brought into question and rightly so given the lack of impact from some of their additions.

There have been various occasions in which supporters have voiced their displeasure at the lack of investment from the hierarchy, but it’s safe to say they have given the likes of Erik ten Hag the funds to work within the market.

The Dutchman spent a huge £600m on incomings during his 27-month reign at Old Trafford, spending £156m alone on Brazilian’s Casemiro and Antony, who have both failed to impress during their time in the Premier League – with the pair starting a combined nine matches in England’s top flight during 2024/25.

Millions of pounds have undoubtedly been wasted on talents, leading to the current cost-cutting operation to cut costs wherever possible, restricting Ruben Amorim’s chances of bolstering his squad dramatically.

However, real promise surrounded the summer window this time around, given the appointment of Dan Ashworth, joining the club from Newcastle United and becoming their Sporting Director.

Dan Ashworth’s summer dealings at Man Utd

After such a high-profile appointment, the supporters had reason to be excited, with the 53-year-old now overseeing transfers at Old Trafford.

However, a couple of months into 2024/25, it’s safe to say many of those additions have failed to provide value for money, including Manuel Ugarte, who’s yet to nail down a starting role despite now featuring under his former boss after their time at Sporting CP.

The Uruguayan cost a whopping £50m from PSG, looking to add that quality and combative nature to the midfield – a feature that was often lacking massively last season.

Despite the huge fee, he’s only started five times in the Premier League, often having to make his mark late on in matches as a substitute.

Joshua Zirkzee is another example of the poor business conducted during the off-season, joining for £36.5m from Bologna after scoring 12 times in Italy during the 2023/24 campaign.

However, his move too has been a disaster, only scoring three times in all competitions, looking well off the pace and level required for success – as demonstrated in the Europa League against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday night.

Despite the flurry of additions, Ashworth also oversaw the departures of players, making a bigger mistake than Zirkzee, by allowing one player to leave – especially considering his form away from United in recent months.

Ashworth’s biggest mistake during his time at United

Scott McTominay was sold during the summer for £25m, joining Serie A side Napoli and subsequently ending his 22-year affiliation with his boyhood club.

The Scottish international operated in various roles during his time in the first team, from centre-back to midfielder and even as a striker, amassing a total of 255 appearances over a seven-year stint in Manchester.

He desired increased game time to further his career as he enters his prime years as a professional, doing just that with Napoli, starting 12 league matches since moving to Naples.

The 28-year-old has already scored three times in Serie A, carrying on his impressive goalscoring form despite his deep-lying midfield role, showing his former employers what a huge mistake they made in allowing him to depart.

McTominay, who’s previously been dubbed as a “monster” by one notable content creator, has also produced some sensational underlying stats, including an average of 2.1 shots per 90, potentially improving United’s current lack of attacking threat if Ashworth didn’t sell the talent.

His recent displays, coupled with Ashworth’s departure over the last few weeks, are further evidence that United still have major issues within the club – with huge work needing to be done if they are to return to their former glory.

It’s great to see an academy star lighting up the European stage, but it will be a big kick in the teeth for the supporters, leaving many pondering what could’ve been if they had kept hold of the Scotsman.

Shafali Verma trying to improve 'physically, mentally and skills-wise'

“I have improved but want to keep getting better at it,” she says about facing short balls from South Africa’s pace attack

Annesha Ghosh26-Mar-20222:13

Shafali: We want to win this World Cup for Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami

Since her international debut in 2019, Shafali Verma’s rapid rise as an all-format player has played out like an action-packed cliffhanger, at 2x speed.Even before she faced her first ball in international cricket as a 15-year-old, she had etched her name in the record books as the youngest Indian to play T20Is. Soon after, the audacity in her approach made her appear like an instant cure-all for many of India’s batting woes.A costly dropped catch in a chastening loss in the 2020 T20 World Cup final then followed and it wasn’t long before the teen batting phenom found herself surfing the choppy seas of top-flight cricket: left out of the ODIs, a blockbuster maiden bow in Test cricket, debuts in overseas leagues, attacks exposing flaws in her technique, a middling patch leading into her maiden ODI World Cup and exclusion from the XI one game into the world tournament. But even when Shafali had gone off the boil, the sense of inevitability around the teenager being only so far from a new batting record never waned.Shafali has scored 0, 12, and 42 so far in this World Cup, against Pakistan, Australia, and Bangladesh, respectively. In the bilateral ODIs against New Zealand just before the World Cup, she scored 12, 24, 51, 0 and 9. So when India recalled her into their XI in a crunch game against Australia last week, the ploy seemed risky. But the payoff Shafali’s potential return to her usual best promised made the punt worth taking, despite her inconsistent recent run in ODIs since her debut last year.”I am always ready for any kind situation I am thrown into. I was ready for the Australia game and was aware that my next opportunity was just around the corner,” Shafali said on Saturday, ahead of India’s must-win game against South Africa in Christchurch. “The coaches, too, were backing me in the nets.”Our batting coach [Shiv Sunder Das], for example, always encourages me and he works with me on my strong points and loose points and so does Kranti [the throwdown specialist] with his throwdowns. They always make sure to speak to the out-of-form players and try to boost their confidence, which is a good thing. As a player, you derive a lot of confidence through such interactions.”Though far from her usual quick-scoring self, Shafali showed glimpses of her big-hitting prowess in her short stay against Australia, bludgeoning the experienced Megan Schutt for a six into the sight screen. In the Bangladesh game, an improved showing yielded a run-a-ball 42 in a vital 74-run opening stand with Smriti Mandhana.”The last game gave me so much confidence,” Shafali said. “I was just thinking of improving myself and backing myself rather than [whether] I am doing good or not. So, [I am] just thinking to do well for the team in tomorrow’s game.”The premium she placed on opportunities “to learn [something] from each day” in the nets helped her in her time on the sidelines for the three matches in this World Cup, she said.”When I was out, I was going through a bad time,” she adds. “So I was focusing on my processes and when you go through such patches it’s important to work on your process. I worked on my mistakes, and tried to improve on a day-by-day basis, and I am doing that even now – physically, mentally and skills-wise.””I am always ready for any kind situation I am thrown into”•Getty Images

Shafali’s inconsistency has been a concern within the Indian batting line-up through their six matches this World Cup. But she believes India have an opportune chance to make amends in their last league fixture against South Africa on Sunday.”Tomorrow is a very crucial game. Everyone knows their role and are ready to give their 100%. We want to put up good partnerships tomorrow. All batters are in form,” she said. “Every time we go out there to bat, our focus remains on building partnerships, supporting the other batters, and backing each other. Whatever happens, we try to back each other, and we want to do that tomorrow as a batting unit through partnerships, too.”Against arguably the most imperious fast-bowling attack in the tournament, Shafali and India have their task cut out. And her struggles against the short ball, especially Shabnim Ismail’s vicious bouncers which rattled her in her debut series, in India in 2019, could compound the India opener’s woes.”It’s a really good match-up,” South Africa allrounder Chloe Tryon said about the forthcoming instalment of the Shafali vs Ismail face-off. “We know that she’s going to want her wicket and we know Shafali’s going to want to hit runs against her. As long as Shabnim sticks to gameplan and stays nice and calm, I’m sure that can happen. But that’s going to be a really good contest to see them go about it.”Shafali, for her part, is hardly flustered at the challenge facing her. She is, instead, relishing the prospect of having a go at the South Africa quicks.”I have worked on playing short balls. I have improved but want to keep getting better at it, whether that be against the short ball or a strong point of mine,” she said. “I always love to play hard balls and good bowlers. I enjoy facing them.”Of course, [I love facing] fast deliveries because I started out playing against boys, so I am looking forward to playing fast balls tomorrow and am very excited about the match. I’ll enjoy playing fast bowling tomorrow.”Tryon also spoke about the prospect of Shafali rediscovering her mojo against them.”Well, she has to bounce back some way, and you’d expect that in the next game,” she said. “So, she’s a big threat. We’ve seen the kind of cricketer she is and how destructive she can be.”Once she gets going, she’s kind of hard to stop, so we’ve had those discussions [that] she’s bound to bounce back and you can see she’s hungry to make runs. So, as us, we just [need to] make sure that we execute our plans against her and hopefully she does not score any runs against us but it’s going to be a really good challenge for us.”

He’s like Odegaard & Foden: Spurs want to sign one of Europe’s best CMs

“It’s just how we play, mate”. That’s often been the response from Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou when quizzed on the club’s current playing style.

It’s certainly entertaining. That said, Spurs have now conceded over 50 shots in their last three home matches and also conceded 13 goals in those clashes.

Now, you may well argue that the Lilywhites are without the likes of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven but there is a lack of planning from Postecoglou when the going gets tough.

Where’s the plan B? It doesn’t look like there is one. As such, no matter the scoreline, Spurs play a high line and are repeatedly punished for doing so.

When will the penny drop? It might not be until the Aussie is relieved from his duties, not that it looks like that will happen anytime soon.

Ange is a likeable bloke, let’s get that out there. He really is. He’s been an honest voice and knows the culture of this football club has to change if they want to win trophies. However, as a team like Arsenal have shown, you need a strong defence in order to build the foundations from the ground up.

Van de Ven and Romero’s returns will be key, but so will some January recruits. Speaking of which, here’s one that may well happen in 2025…

Spurs chasing Serie A star in 2025

So, on this occasion, it’s not the defence that’s being touted with being strengthened. Instead, it’s a midfielder who would undoubtedly make the spine of this Spurs team a great deal stronger.

Indeed, according to reports from ESPN last week, it revealed a few targets that the Londoners could look towards in the new year.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

One of those is Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders, who the club have reportedly been scouting with a view to making a move.

Previous reports have suggested that the talented Dutch midfielder could set any suitor back a £50m fee.

So, what would Reijnders offer anyone who signs him? The answer is a great deal.

Why Spurs should sign Tijjani Reijnders

Celebrated as one of the “top five midfielders this season” in Europe by data analyst Ben Mattinson, it’s already evident that Spurs would be making quite the statement by signing Reijnders.

Aged 26-year-old, the Milan star is swiftly approaching his prime and he’s certainly playing like that at the moment.

A scorer of eight goals in 2024/25 to date, he can offer you goals but he’s a creative asset too, registering three assists this term. Those numbers are already better than what he posted last campaign when the Dutch midfielder scored four times and supplied four assists.

So, he’s getting better all the time and he also gives you versatility, capable of playing as a holding midfielder, a number 8 or as an attack-minded midfielder.

That would paint him in the James Maddison or Dejan Kulusevski mould, so one might question the need for him. Well, look at how he stacks up to Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard and Phil Foden and let us know what you think now.

Indeed, according to FBRef’s similar players tool, the three are noted as comparable assets. Reijnders might not have a 27-goal seasonal haul in him like Foden registered in 2023/24 but there are some parallels to draw.

The numbers outlined above are particularly impressive and although Odegaard is by far the most creative of the three, making 2.90 key passes per 90 minutes, there are a number of similarities to dive into here.

Firstly, they both have a similar influence on the ball in their team, with only four touches per 90 separating the trio. Interestingly, they make a very similar number of progressive carries and successfully take on a player with a near-identical level of efficiency.

It’s perhaps unsurprising to see that Reijnders completes more long balls per 90 given he can play in a deeper role but it outlines the sheer range of his skillset here. He can play long, he can play short, he can beat opponents with his dribbling and he can score goals.

This would be a fabulous signing for Spurs and one that could take Postecoglou’s team to the next level.

Capitals and Super Giants seek consistency to escape mid-table logjam

Both teams face off with inconsistent middle orders in focus

Himanshu Agrawal30-Apr-20222:19

Has Rishabh Pant managed his bowling resources well?

Big pictureSix games to go out of 14 may sound like a lot, but not when you are placed sixth in a mid-table logjam, with five teams above jostling to confirm a top-four finish, and two others below you breathing down your neck. Delhi Capitals’ rollercoaster lose-one-win-one ride has been on for six games now, and they will be looking for some consistency at this stage.Hit by Covid-19 and then a needless no-ball-that-never-happened controversy, they can still be buoyed by Kuldeep Yadav’s resurgence, Mitchell Marsh’s brief spark on return from quarantine, and their effective pace battery, led by Mustafizur Rahman and Khaleel Ahmed.Live in the USA

You can watch the action on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

Although Khaleel missed Capitals’ last match due to a hamstring injury, the emerging Chetan Sakariya – another left-armer in their ranks – answered the call with three economical overs, which included the wicket of Aaron Finch off his third ball. But what of Capitals’ batting? Openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw aside, their line-up hasn’t offered much encouragement. Rishabh Pant has occasionally flickered, but not lit up the show yet; Lalit Yadav’s form has faded away after a bright start; Rovman Powell has got respectable scores in only the last two matches; and Sarfaraz Khan has been in and out of the side.Despite four losses in eight matches, Capitals boast of the best net run rate among all teams. But that will count for little if they can’t pocket vital points. To summarise it all, only four playoffs spots are up for grabs, and eight teams – nine, if you are a Chennai Super Kings fan – are still in the running, a reality which Capitals cannot shy away from.Against this background they face Lucknow Super Giants, who will be eyeing a hat-trick of wins. A line-up filled with allrounders – two pace-bowling in Jason Holder and Marcus Stoinis, one left-arm spin-bowling in Krunal Pandya, and an offspin-bowling one in Deepak Hooda – Super Giants, on form, appear to have one foot inside the playoffs door already.Related

Fearless Kuldeep Yadav continues reaping rewards of planning

Krunal Pandya credits technical adjustments for improved bowling

Like Capitals, they have had star performers with the ball, the latest of which is the left-arm quick Mohsin Khan. Ravi Bishnoi hasn’t been consistent – although he has seven wickets, he averages 41 with an economy rate of 8.22 – but that hasn’t troubled his colleagues. Dushmantha Chameera has zipped through with rapid pace, Holder and Avesh Khan have been among the wickets despite being expensive, and now even Pandya has found his bowling rhythm. But, while having a plethora of allrounders has provided them with depth and multiple options, their middle order – like Capitals’ – hasn’t been at its best. Only captain KL Rahul and his opening partner Quinton de Kock have been regularly churning out runs for Super Giants. In their last five matches, their bowlers have successfully defended totals three times – two of which were only 153 and 169 – while they have lost batting second twice in a row. With not much time left, Super Giants, like Capitals, will be eyeing better consistency. In the newsKhaleel was forced to sit out Capitals’ previous game against Kolkata Knight Riders, with no official word on his availability since. If Khaleel is fit to return, Sakariya’s impressive performance on his Capitals debut may cause some dilemma for them.Likely XIsDelhi Capitals: 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 David Warner, 3 Rishabh Pant (capt, wk), 4 Mitchell Marsh, 5 Lalit Yadav, 6 Axar Patel, 7 Rovman Powell, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Khaleel Ahmed/Chetan SakariyaLucknow Super Giants: 1 KL Rahul (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Marcus Stoinis, 4 Krunal Pandya, 5 Deepak Hooda, 6 Ayush Badoni/Manish Pandey, 7 Jason Holder, 8 Dushmantha Chameera, 9 Ravi Bishnoi, 10 Mohsin Khan, 11 Avesh KhanRavi Bishnoi has got the wood over David Warner in T20s•BCCI

Strategy punt Warner and Bishnoi have been in contrasting form for their respective sides, but give the new ball to the legspinner against the opener in T20s, and you can expect the batter to be in trouble. Bishnoi, who bowls several wrong ‘uns, has dismissed Warner each of the three times they have met. Moreover, those three wickets have come in only six balls.Warner’s opening partner Shaw has also faced only nine deliveries of Bishnoi in the format, although he has taken him for 14 without getting out. de Kock has bashed all of Mustafizur, Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur in T20s. With a strike rate of 161, 160 and 147 against them respectively, he has been dismissed only once each by Axar in eight innings and Thakur in five. With de Kock in fine form already, expect another quick start from him in the powerplay. But Capitals have two options to keep him quiet. If they retain Sakariya, he can possibly help keep de Kock in check, having conceded only 13 runs off 11 balls to him. Plus, there is the confident Kuldeep, with the left-arm wristspinner having got de Kock twice in 14 balls while conceding 20 runs.Stats that matter Pant has fallen to pace each of the six times he has been dismissed this season, despite a strike rate of 154 in 56 balls against it, as against not getting out to 71 deliveries of spin bowling. Super Giants have tried out four batters at No. 3, with Manish Pandey’s four innings being the most at the spot for them. The last time Kuldeep had taken as many as 17 wickets in an IPL season was in 2018, when he represented Kolkata Knight Riders. Hooda has come out to bat four times in the first five overs this season, and has hit two half-centuries.

Red Bull Bragantino encaminha a contratação do zagueiro Renan

Além do duelo contra o Pantera, o jogador atuou sete minutos contra o Santo André e 11 diante do São Bernardo.

West Ham want to sign £40m Premier League ace who scored at London Stadium

West Ham United are now keen on signing a “clinical” £40 million Premier League midfielder this month, according to a new report.

West Ham transfer news

Julen Lopetegui could soon get the sack at the London Stadium after defeat to Manchester City reopened the question marks around his long-term future at the club. Graham Potter’s name is once again back in the frame for the Hammers, and the former Chelsea boss may well seal a move to replace the Spaniard.

West Ham now make contact over move to sign "fantastic" £60m striker

Julen Lopetegui is keen to strengthen his strike force this winter.

ByDominic Lund Jan 3, 2025

Ahead of the game against City, Lopetegui revealed that West Ham are “working” on potential arrivals behind the scenes. Lopetegui said: “It is true that we have these two important losses [Bowen and Antonio]. The club knows our needs and are working about [on] that.”

One player the Hammers were interested in signing was Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney, but that appears to be a non-starter, as the defender looks set to re-join his old side Celtic. West Ham are said to have made an approach to sign Tierney, but he has snubbed the interest in favour of rejoining the Scottish champions.

A new forward could be on the radar for the Premier League side, as they are targeting a move for Real Sociedad star Brias Mendez. Lopetegui knows the player, having come up against him in La Liga, and he could be an option for the Hammers this month, as they look to strengthen their forward line.

West Ham keen on signing "clinical" £40m Premier League midfielder

Signing a new defender and forward are not the only positions the Hammers are looking to strengthen, as according to TBR Football, West Ham are interested in signing Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea in this transfer window.

Chelsea's Carney Chukwuemeka in action

Chukwuemeka joined Chelsea in 2022, but his time with the Blues has been far from successful. The midfielder has struggled to nail down a regular spot in the starting XI, and under Enzo Maresca, he has hardly featured. The 21-year-old has played five times this season, four of which have come in the UEFA Conference League and one in the EFL Cup. Not only has he not played in the league, but he has yet to make a matchday squad.

TBR Football now reports that Chelsea are prepared to let Chukwuemeka leave this month, ideally with a permanent sale, with them looking to get around £40 million for the player. There are several players that the Blues want to move on in this month, and Chukwuemeka is one of those who has interest from West Ham and his former club Aston Villa.

The Hammers want to sign a new midfielder, but the chances of them paying £40 million this month is said to be unrealistic. Chukwuemeka, who scored at the London Stadium against the Hammers last season, is very highly rated by former Chelsea man Marcel Desailly, as he labels the midfielder as “clinical.”

Desailly said of Chukwuemeka: “I like Carney Chukwuemeka because he is like an artist who comes onto the stage. He has got the ball. Now is my moment. Shine. You see the dribbling. He is sure about what he is going to do, and he is clinical. I love it.”
