Leicestershire chair Mehmooda Duke quits in blow to ECB's diversity drive

Non-white female chair steps down with immediate effect as ECB postpone plan to tackle racism

The ECB has been forced to postpone the publication of its plan to improve diversity in English cricket, amid the abrupt departure on Thursday of one of the only two non-white chairs of a first-class county.Mehmooda Duke, who was also the only female in such a high-profile county role, and one of only three female board members from black or minority ethnic backgrounds, had been due to step down at the end of March to take up a new role as High Sheriff for Leicestershire. However, she has now chosen to depart with immediate effect, stating that “cricket had been torn apart by recent events”, and calling for “fresh leadership at national level” – a choice of words that places further pressure on the ECB chief executive Tom Harrison, following his unconvincing display at last week’s parliamentary hearing into the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal.Leicestershire’s vice-chairman, Jonathan Duckworth, is set to become interim chairman until a long-term replacement is identified.”Cricket has been torn apart by recent events and I am deeply saddened by the hurt felt by individuals within our game,” Duke said in her statement. “With fresh leadership at national level and with a determination to learn from the recent past and move forward, I hope that racism and discrimination will be expunged from the dressing rooms, the fields, and the game as a whole, allowing us to celebrate the diversity which makes cricket and sport in this country so great.”I wish all of my colleagues on the board and across the network, the players, staff and the community teams, all the very best for the future,” she added. “I thank the Members, supporters, and sponsors for their unwavering loyalty to the club and especially during some difficult times.”The news emerged as the ECB were forced to concede that their response to cricket’s racism allegations, drafted at an all-stakeholders meeting at the Kia Oval last Friday, was “not quite there”, having originally been expected to be finalised by Wednesday.Once the final wording of the plan has been agreed, it is expected to include a commitment to a 30 percent boardroom representation for women and “representative ethnicities” at all first-class and national county clubs, as well as ongoing diversity training for all players, staff, umpires and coaches.Meanwhile, Azeem Rafiq has met with a Holocaust survivor at the Jewish Museum in London, in the wake of his apology for anti-Semitic messages that he sent as a 19-year-old in 2011.Rafiq, who is facing an ECB investigation for his comments – which included the suggestion that the Derbyshire player, Atif Sheikh, had been unwilling to spend money on a meal out because “he is a jew” – met with Ruth Barnett, who escaped Nazi Germany in 1939, as well as Steve Silverman from the Campaign Against Antisemitism. In his apology, Rafiq had said: “I am incredibly angry at myself and I apologise to the Jewish community and everyone who is rightly offended by this,” and has committed himself to education on the issue of anti-Semitism.

West Ham wasted £52.8m on flop who earned over 2x more than Summerville

West Ham United have endured a tricky start to the new Premier League campaign under boss Julen Lopetegui, often failing to hit the heights many anticipated them to in pre-season.

The Hammers saw a massive overhaul of the playing squad, with nine first-team additions during the off-season, spending upwards of £120m on new talent to take the side to the next level.

However, in the first nine league outings of 2024/25, the Spaniard’s men have only won three times, currently sitting in 13th place and just a couple of places above the relegation zone.

Players such as Guido Rodriguez, Max Kilman and Niclas Füllkrug all arrived at the London Stadium, with hopes of returning the club towards European contention.

The latter has only featured for 63 minutes in the league, suffering an injury and failing to make an impact after his £27m move from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

One player has shown glimpses of his talent, with his most recent outing for the Irons his best during his short stint in East London.

Crysencio Summerville’s stats for West Ham

Despite huge interest from various sides all over Europe, West Ham won the race for the signature of winger Crysencio Summerville from Championship side Leeds United.

The 22-year-old cost the Hammers £25m before add-ons, with real expectations of providing that added quality in attacking areas, but he’s often struggled in recent months.

Crysencio Summerville for West Ham

He’s often found himself behind Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus in the pecking order, featuring for just 215 minutes in the Premier League.

However, after Kudus’ dismissal against rivals Tottenham Hotspur a couple of weeks ago, he could’ve been handed a rare start against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Lopetegui opted with Carlos Soler in a wide role instead, but Summerville was given the opportunity to impress off the substitutes’ bench – taking his chance with both hands.

The Dutchman scored the opener, helping the Irons secure a victory over the Red Devils, subsequently resulting in Erik ten Hag losing his job over the last couple of days.

However, he still earns less than one player who cost the club an arm and a leg during his unsuccessful stint at the London Stadium.

The man who earned more than Summerville at West Ham

Striker Sebastian Haller arrived at West Ham with high expectations after his £45m transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2019 under Manuel Pellegrini – a deal that still remains as a club record.

Sebastian Haller for West Ham.

However, the Ivorian’s time in East London never lived up to the hype, scoring just 14 times in his two full seasons as a Hammer, before departing the club.

The 30-year-old would join Ajax in a £20m deal, a move which saw them lose £25m in a two-year period, further showing how much of a poor deal it was in hindsight.

Haller’s transfer fee was bad enough, but the forward pocketed himself £75k-per-week during his time at the London Stadium, one of the highest figures during the 2019/20 campaign.

His subsequent weekly income saw him earn over two times more than current first-team ace Summerville, who only earns £30k-per-week despite his big-money transfer this summer.

When combining Haller’s wages during his time in the Premier League along with his transfer fee, he cost the club a staggering £52.8m – which worked out to around £3.7m per goal he scored.

Given the staggering money spent, the deal was a complete disaster, undoubtedly burning a hole in the club’s finances.

The hierarchy undoubtedly made the right call in offloading the striker when they did, preventing them from losing any more money on their club-record investment.

Aston Villa struck gold on £0 signing who’s now similar to a £115m titan

Aston Villa have not been known as big spenders in the Premier League. One of their most expensive players was a man signed this summer. Unai Emery’s side brought Amadou Onana to the club, paying his former team Everton £50m for his services. He has gone on to become a key player for the Spaniard.

However, he is not the most expensive incoming of all time at Villa Park. Instead, it was French winger Moussa Diaby who is the record addition for the Midlands outfit. They paid a reported £51.9m to Bayer Leverkusen, although sold him a year later to Saudi Arabia for a similar fee.

Although the Villans have made several expensive signings over the past few summers, namely Onana and Diaby, they have been known to complete some smart deals, acquiring the odd bargain or two in recent times.

Aston Villa’s best free transfers

The Midlands side have a good track record when it comes to free transfers, and have made some particularly impressive deals in the past few years.

The most recent example of this has been Youri Tielemans. The Belgian midfielder joined upon the expiration of his Leicester City contract. He has gone on to become a crucial player in the middle of the park alongside countryman Onana, making 61 appearances so far. He has started every game in the Premier League and Champions League this term.

Dating back slightly further, to the early Noughties, the Villans signed German midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger on a free transfer. He had a superb career for the Villans, scoring 12 goals and grabbing 14 assists in 114 games.

They have also made some more experienced free signings. Ashley Young returned for a second spell to the club in 2021, staying two seasons and playing 57 games. The Villans also signed John Terry, who played for one season in the Championship in 2017/18, a campaign in which they lost in the Playoff Final.

However, as good as these additions were, there was another free signing in the last few seasons who may have been the best of the bunch. That player is Boubacar Kamara.

Kamara’s value in 2024

Although a bad injury has hampered his time at Villa, the French midfielder has been an important player under Emery. The 24-year-old has certainly made far fewer appearances at the club than he would have liked, but he has been a key cog in the Villa machine when fit.

In total, the five-cap France international has played 63 times for the Midlands side, chipping in with a goal and two assists in that time. He has played seven times this term, recovering from a particularly bad anterior cruciate ligament injury. Villa are being cautious, as expected, and the former Marseille man has played just 33 Premier League minutes so far.

Indeed, his injury record at Villa Park has, sadly, been quite poor so far. Kamara missed 35 games and 262 days, with his ACL injury. In total, he has had four injuries, missing 52 games for club and country, which adds up to 340 days.

That said, when fit and firing, the 6 foot sensation is a real midfield powerhouse. In many ways, the “composed” Villa ace, as football scout Jacek Kulig described him, is similar to Chelsea and Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo, at least statistically, as per FBref.

The pair are metronomic on the ball, with Kamara averaging an 87.6% pass accuracy and Caicedo an 89.1% pass accuracy, according to FBref. However, where they are most alike is defensively, with the Villa number 44 averaging 3.69 tackles and interceptions per 90, and the Chelsea midfield general averaging 4.77 per 90.

Given he cost them nothing after signing on a free transfer, the midfielder has been a revelation. Not only is he similar to someone worth £115m, the fee Chelsea paid for Caicedo, but he is worth £31.5m according to Transfermarkt.

It has certainly been a fantastic addition for Villa, and if he can stay fit, they could be looking at a player worth £100m or more, who can add superb quality to their midfield ranks both in and out of possession.

Grant Flower joins Sussex as batting coach

Sussex CCC have signed former Zimbabwe cricketer and much-travelled coach Grant Flower to be their batting coach. He replaces Jason Swift, who has stepped down to pursue other opportunities.”It gives me great pleasure to be added to the Sussex coaching staff and I can’t wait to start,” Flower, an integral part of the Zimbabwe side from 1992 to 2010, said in a statement released by the club. “I have been told about the exciting young batters coming through the ranks and am excited to be given the opportunity of hopefully improving them along their journey.”I always enjoyed playing against the Sharks and admired their professional approach and ultra-competitiveness. Hopefully I can add to that with some of my international coaching experiences and help contribute to make the Sharks batting unit both reliable and exciting.”Flower’s last assignment was as batting coach of the Sri Lanka side, which ended in 2021 after a two-year stint. Prior to that, he had worked in a similar capacity with Pakistan and, before that, with Zimbabwe. He has also had coaching gigs with Essex and Midwest Rhinos in Zimbabwe.During his playing career, which included 67 Tests (3457 runs at an average of 29.54) and 221 ODIs (6571 runs at 33.52), Flower spent six seasons with Essex, from 2005 to 2010, winning three one-day trophies with them.”Grant is an absolutely fantastic addition to our staff,” Sussex’s championship and one-day head coach Ian Salisbury said. “I’ve known him since my first trip to Zimbabwe in 1989 and can vouch for his personal qualities, while his coaching and playing record speak for themselves.”With a young squad in the early stage of their careers, the quality of the coaching set-up is absolutely vital. To add someone with Grant’s track record alongside people like James Kirtley, Sarah Taylor, Ash Wright and Mike Yardy puts us in a really strong position. I feel humbled to be working alongside this group.”There have been some challenges over the past year or so, but we’ve got to look forward now. We’ve got a brilliant coaching team in place, the medical and S&C teams are doing great work with the lads’ fitness, we’ve got the marquee going up early in the New Year, so we’re in a great position to now focus on the squad’s cricketing skills as we build up to the start of the season.”

Celtic interested in signing "talented" £20m player who’ll be granted exit

Potentially splashing the cash in 2025, Celtic are reportedly interested in signing a Premier League winner who will be granted an exit away from his current club when the chance arrives.

Celtic transfer news

The Bhoys have enjoyed quite the start to the campaign, sitting top of the Scottish Premiership once again, but will be well aware of just how important it is to continue that run after the international break. Squaring off against Hearts in the league before then playing host to Club Brugge in Europe, it could be quite the week for Brendan Rodgers’ side if they manage to pick up where they left off.

Meanwhile, away from the action, the transfer rumours have been coming thick and fast. The in-form Nicolas Kuhn is already receiving links to the Premier League in what could worry the Scottish champions, but they’re also eyeing up some incomings of their own in the form of talented twins Cole and Dylan Williams.

The young duo are options for the future and could one day join one other target at the heart of Rodgers’ side. According to Caught Offside, Celtic are interested in signing James McAtee, who will be allowed to leave Manchester City when the chance arrives.

The deal won’t be easy and it will not be cheap, however. In fact, if Celtic want to sign McAtee, then they will have to spend a club-record of more than £20m – eclipsing their current record of £14m, which they spent to sign Jota in 2022. (Transfermarkt)

"Superb" 24 y/o Celtic player basically admits he could be sold next summer

He is currently out on loan for the season.

ByHenry Jackson Nov 18, 2024

With West Ham United, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City all reportedly among the other clubs eyeing a move to sign the Manchester City midfielder, meanwhile, it’s fair to say that Celtic face quite the competition for his signature.

"Talented" McAtee can become next Cole Palmer

Of course, the last big academy graduate to leave Manchester City was none other than Cole Palmer, who has gone on to become one of the best players in the Premier League at Chelsea. He remains City’s biggest regrets but they may not have learned from their mistake, given their willingness to let McAtee depart. Amid a transitional period, the attacking midfielder may well follow in Palmer’s footsteps in what could even benefit Celtic.

If the Bhoys were to land a player set for a similar rise to Palmer then it would be a game-changer on the European stage and only enhance their dominance in the Scottish Premiership. If the praise of Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig is anything to go by too, then the 22-year-old is certainly one to watch.

The reported £20m+ transfer fee could be the big stumbling block for Celtic, but if the likes of Kuhn depart in the summer then they may yet have the chance to pursue a player of McAtee’s calibre.

Somerset have signed Peter Siddle as an all-format overseas player for the 2022 season. Siddle, 37, will be available until early August, with Somerset becoming his fourth county team after previous spells with Nottinghamshire, Lancashire and, most recently, Essex. The veteran Australian quick is Somerset’s third overseas signing for 2022 after Matt Renshaw – his Adelaide Strikers team-mate – and South African Marchant de Lange, with only two permitted in the playing XI in each format. Siddle looks set to play alongside de Lange in the T20 Blast, and is likely to start the season playing with Renshaw in the County Championship after de Lange underwhelmed with the red ball last year, taking 20 wickets at 34.25.Related

Andy Hurry, the club’s director of cricket, said that the decision to sign an extra seamer was a nod to the possibility of England call-ups for the likes of Craig Overton and Lewis Gregory.”We have taken some very valuable learnings from the 2021 season, and one of those is the demands that the domestic and international schedule is placing on the players and our squad,” he said. “With a very busy international schedule and anticipated call-ups, we needed to recruit an additional highly skilled bowler who is ready to perform this coming summer.”This in turn will enable us to ensure that we can create the appropriate time and opportunities to nurture the development of our highly talented group of aspirational bowlers and embed the foundation skills required at the top level.”For his part, Siddle, who retired from international cricket in 2019, said, “Somerset are held in high regard within the game, and to get a chance to play for the club is something that I am really looking forward to.”I’ve had some good games against Somerset over the years and now I’m looking forward to contributing to some wins for them. I enjoy playing in England and I would love to be able to play a part in Somerset winning some silverware, especially their first-ever County Championship.”
