Newcastle may regret losing £15m ace who is now playing better than Gordon

Newcastle United entered the international break winless in their last three Premier League games, with Eddie Howe cursing his side’s luck when drawing 0-0 last time out away at Everton.

The story of the game could have been different if Anthony Gordon managed to hold his nerve from the penalty spot against his former club, but a chorus of jeers from the Toffees faithful got the better of the Magpies star in the end, as Jordan Pickford successfully saved his weak spot-kick.

Gordon won’t want this to be his undoing though, after the Newcastle number ten had enjoyed a successful personal season to date away from that blunder at Goodison Park.

Gordon's form for Newcastle

Prior to this stalemate on the road, Gordon had fired home his side’s only goal of the game against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, taking his account for the campaign to two strikes.

Eyebrows were somewhat raised when the homegrown Toffees product did walk away from home comforts on Merseyside in 2023, with the Magpies splashing out a hefty £45m but he is arguably justifying that extortionate amount now.

In total, the England international has 15 goals and 11 assists lining up for Howe’s men, with 23 of those goal contributions coming last campaign as the left winger sparked into life for his new employers.

Gordon will be striving to match those numbers – or even better them – across this season to come, pushing the disappointment of that penalty miss to the back of his mind in the process.

But, although he has started this campaign in a promising manner away from the clash at Everton, there is a former Magpies dud who is currently outperforming him who Newcastle fans would have definitely forgotten about.

How Florian Thauvin is performing in 2024

Away from striking gold with the likes of Yohan Cabaye, Newcastle have been prone to a slip-up when buying from France in the past and Florian Thauvin is certainly one for the dud category when he arrived from Olympique de Marseille in 2015.

Thauvin cost £15m to get in through the door, which ended up being a colossal waste of money, with the French ace making only 16 appearances for the Magpies in total across one forgettable season, with just one goal to show for his efforts on top of three assists.

Now, however, Thauvin has managed to find a black and white strip that’s a more comfortable fit, with three goals and one assist picked up from six games in Serie A action this season to date for Udinese.

The Frenchman even wears the captain’s armband now for his Italian employers, with the 31-year-old able to put his nightmare stint in England way behind him now without hesitation, as he keeps being a consistent hero for Giampaolo Pozzo’s outfit instead.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

He even has a further one goal and two assists in cup action for Udinese throughout 2024/25, with his electric form certainly seeing him live up to the “magnificent” billing once handed out to him by football journalist Josh Bunting when Thauvin initially bounced back from his dire Magpies stint playing for Marseille again.

Thauvin could arguably be useful to Howe’s troops now if he was theoretically back at St James’ Park, considering the Magpies boss doesn’t have an overwhelming amount of options to call upon down the right wing, with Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron his main two choices amidst a lack of squad depth.

Howe will at least be thankful that he has Gordon at his disposal on the opposite flank, as the one-time Toffees youngster aims to continue nailing down a starting spot for Newcastle this campaign, and perhaps he could better his goal and assist tally for last season in the process.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Chamika Karunaratne steer Sri Lanka to 2-0 series win

An unbroken 74-run partnership between Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Chamika Karunaratne helped Sri Lanka recover from a precarious position and complete a five-wicket win against Oman in Al Amerat. With the victory, Sri Lanka also sealed the two-match T20 series 2-0.Chasing 160, Sri Lanka seemed to be cruising at 87 for 2 by the 10th over thanks to Avishka Fernando’s 18-ball 33, but Oman clawed their way back into the game with three wickets in the space of eight deliveries. Fast bowler Mohammad Nadeem’s double-strike left the visitors reeling at 89 for 5, but Rajapaksa and Karunaratne stabilised the innings, their sixth-wicket stand eventually seeing the team home with 15 deliveries to spare. Rajapaksa slammed two sixes during his 21-ball 35, while Chamika Karunaratne carted three sixes in his 26-ball 35.Earlier, Oman, asked to bat, had put up 159 for 8 on the back of a half-century from No. 3 Aqib Ilyas. He stroked three fours and four sixes for his 38-ball 59, and shared a 59-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Ayaan Khan, taking the team to a promising 134 for 3. However, Ilyas’ dismissal in the 17th over triggered a slide, as Oman slumped from 134 for 3 to 142 for 7.Lahiru Kumara was the pick of Sri Lanka’s bowlers, finishing with figures of 4-1-20-2, while Karunaratne also chipped in with two wickets, including the key scalp of Ilyas.

It’s not Moore: Ange must now drop Maddison & unleash Spurs sensation

Tottenham Hotspur travel to face Crystal Palace this afternoon, looking to inflict yet more pain on Oliver Glasner’s side, whilst continuing their current run of form.

The Eagles are yet to win a Premier League game this season, whilst Ange Postecoglou’s men have won two in a row in all competitions since the return to club football after the international break.

Spurs registered a 4-1 victory over London rivals last weekend, before a 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday night – maintaining their 100% start to the European campaign.

However, Postecoglou will be hoping to pick up another three points in the league this afternoon to keep up their hopes of securing a Champions League spot come the end of May.

If Spurs are to gain another three valuable points this afternoon, he may have to drop one first-team star to allow another to thrive at Selhurst Park.

Why James Maddison should be dropped against Palace

Midfielder James Maddison may have registered an assist in the Europa League victory in midweek, but he could find himself on the substitutes bench for this afternoon’s clash with Palace.

The Englishman was replaced at the interval by Postecoglou against West Ham last weekend, which led to Spurs managing to score three goals inside 15 minutes and secure a needed three points.

Dejan Kulusevski has operated in a more central role alongside Yves Bissouma and Maddison in recent weeks, but given Glasner’s 3-4-3 system, the Aussie could opt for a more compact and defensive trio this afternoon – with the 27-year-old possibly the man to miss out.

Undoubtedly, it would be a harsh decision for the former Leicester man to miss out from the off, but given the attacking display on show last weekend, it’s clear that they can still create endless opportunities in the final third.

One player is more than deserving of a recall, with his box-to-box qualities allowing for a perfect balance for Postecoglou in the middle of the park.

The man who could replace Maddison against Palace

Mikey Moore produced another stellar display for the club’s first team in the Europa League in midweek, starting the match and showcasing his ball-carrying skills with his mazy run.

However, despite his performance, it’s unlikely that he will be handed a first league start, with Timo Werner the likely choice to replace Heung-min Son should he fail to make the meeting at Selhurst.

Pape Matar Sarr was the man who replaced Maddison for the second half against the Hammers last weekend, enjoying a superb display and having an impact at both ends of the pitch.

The 22-year-old completed 100% of the passes he attempted, creating one big chance as a result of his impressive passing range.

The Senegalese talent grabbed the assist for Son’s strike, having the same offensive output as Maddison despite featuring as a deeper option than the Englishman.

Sarr, who’s previously been dubbed “frightening” by talent scout Antonio Mango, also impressed defensively last weekend, winning four duels, making five defensive actions whilst winning both of his attempted tackles.

He’s progressed leaps and bounds since the appointment of Postecoglou, with the Aussie putting his trust in the youngster to flourish in the first-team and help the club achieve their goal of a top-four finish.

His display against Lopetegui’s side is evidence of what he can produce when given the opportunity, with his tenacity in all thirds of the pitch giving Postecoglou a potential selection headache – with Maddison the most likely candidate to lose his starting role this afternoon.

Rodgers could drop Engels and unleash "creative" Celtic star

Fresh from their midweek trip to Bergamo, Scottish champions Celtic return to Premiership action away to Motherwell on Sunday afternoon, with the Old Firm side seeking to get back to winning ways after recording two successive draws in all competitions.

The caveat to that last statement is that both stalemates have come in key fixtures against surprise title rivals Aberdeen and Europa League holders, Atalanta, with the Hoops having still only lost once this season across domestic and European competition.

With the Dons breathing down their neck, Brendan Rodgers’ side can ill afford a slip-up at Fir Park, albeit with the travelling party set to be boosted by the potential return of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Greg Taylor from injury.

Whether Rodgers does choose to shuffle his pack defensively following Wednesday’s titanic display remains to be seen, although there could well be changes further up the pitch, with summer signing Arne Engels among those who might benefit from a rest.

Arne Engels' display vs Atalanta

A return of five goals and assists from just nine games is a respectable record indeed for Celtic’s club-record addition, with the £11m man having made a strong early impression in that creative midfield berth.

With such a price tag, however, comes understandable scrutiny and criticism, with the promising Belgian also not helped by the pressure to try and fill the shoes of Matt O’Riley at Parkhead.

As Rodgers has rightly stated in defence of the midfielder, the 21-year-old is being somewhat harshly judged as he is “nowhere near the finished article”, albeit with the Northern Irishman also hinting that there will be times when he may come out of the side to “recover”.

Ahead of today’s meeting, it could represent one of those occasions for Engels to make way, particularly with the playmaker not exactly setting the world alight last time out, having been awarded a 6/10 match rating by The Scotsman’s Mark Atkinson.

With Celtic largely on the back foot, it was undoubtedly difficult for the former Augsburg man to make an impact, although he did win just two of his seven duels, while also giving the ball away on nine occasions from just 31 touches, as per Sofascore.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

As such, with Engels having also struggled in last weekend’s top-of-the-table clash – as he notably lost possession 20 times – the time may be right for a midfield reshuffle.

The player who could replace Engels vs Motherwell

Thankfully for Rodgers, he does have depth in the centre of the park, with Paulo Bernardo having also signed permanently this summer, alongside former Dundee man, Luke McCowan.

With McCowan having been the player to replace Engels off the bench in recent games, it may well be a chance to flip those roles this time around, allowing the 26-year-old a rare chance to impress from the outset.

The £1m addition is yet to start a game for his new club since arriving in late August, although he did get off the mark after scoring against Hearts in just his second league outing.

Previously described as perhaps the “best midfielder in the league outside the Old Firm” by writer Kai Watson – who also praised him as a “creative and tenacious” asset – the Scotsman will be keen to showcase the type of form that earned him a move in the first place, after registering 15 goals and assists last term for his former employers.

Possessing that wand of a left, something that was particularly on show as he delightfully teed up Alex Valle in the build-up to Adam Idah’s strike against St Johnstone, the new man could well be best suited to trying to emulate the impact of O’Riley, or the likes of Ryan Christie and Tom Rogic before him.

Of course, having someone like McCowan as an option off the bench to try and unlock the door is certainly useful, yet at some stage, a starting berth will need to be dished out.

While Engels is still finding his feet in Scottish football, his fellow midfielder has proven his talents in the Premiership in recent years. Now he needs a proper chance to prove that he is good enough to have made the jump to a club of Celtic’s mammoth stature.

A bruxa segue à solta! Igor Vinícius volta a sentir contusão, e São Paulo decide operar lateral

O provável São Paulo irá a campo com Rafael; Nathan, Alan Franco, Beraldo e Caio; Méndez, Pablo Maia e Nestor; Luciano, Galoppo e Wellington Rato.

Ferraresi – cirurgia no joelho direito – deve voltar a atuar somente no segundo semestre

Moreira – cirurgia no joelho esquerdo – deve voltar apenas no segundo semestre

Rafinha – entorse no tornozelo esquerdo – segue em tratamento no Reffis

Harvey Hosein retires from cricket due to long-term concussion

Wicketkeeper claimed 11 catches on debut for Derbyshire in 2014, aged 18

Harvey Hosein, the Derbyshire wicketkeeper-batter, has announced his retirement from professional cricket after missing much of the 2021 season due to a series of concussions.Hosein, 25, made his first-class debut for Derbyshire against Surrey in 2014, at the age of 18, and starred from the outset, claiming seven first-innings catches, and a club record 11 for the match, in an eight-wicket victory. However, his progress was hampered this season, with four recent concussions, and two instances in which he had to leave the field due to concussion protocols. The latter incident, a blow to the helmet while batting against Leicestershire in the Royal London Cup in July, ruled him out for the remainder of the season. And now, following assessment and management from Derbyshire’s medical team and a specialist consultant multidisciplinary team, Hosein has chosen to step away from cricket with immediate effect to prevent any possible future injury.”Retiring early from the game has been the hardest moment I’ve faced in my professional career,” Hosein said. “I have been lucky enough to enjoy eight professional seasons as a homegrown player; an ambition I held since joining the Club at the age of 12.”I am extremely grateful for the support I have received during my time at Derbyshire and would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone at the Club, both on and off the field.”This is not how I envisaged or wanted to leave the game; however, I have made lifelong memories during the past 13 years at Derbyshire.”The loyalty and support that I received from Members and supporters is something I will always cherish – it has meant a huge amount to me over the years.”I look forward to joining them in supporting the Club as I look to the future and a new career path.”Hosein played in a total of 83 matches for Derbyshire, scoring 2,768 runs, with a top score of 138 not out, while he also claimed 156 dismissals. He will continue to receive support from the club, as well as the Professional Cricketers’ Association, as he works towards an Investment Management Certificate qualification, and a new career in finance.Ryan Duckett, Derbyshire’s chief executive, said: “I’m deeply disappointed for Harvey and as a Club, it’s unfortunate to lose a talented and home-grown cricketer, but players’ health must always come first.”There are risks associated with any contact sport and cricket is no different, particularly at this level. The Club’s medical staff and Harvey himself have followed the ECB’s concussion protocols thoroughly and there is no doubt that in doing so have in all likelihood prevented further injury.”Harvey has acted professionally throughout his time with Derbyshire and has been a great ambassador for the Club and the sport. He’s an intelligent young man with a bright future ahead of him. On behalf of the Club, I wish him all the very best and we will support him in any way we can as he begins a career outside of cricket.”
