It’s a new season and a new European format, yet it was the same old Manchester United on Wednesday night, with the Red Devils slipping to a 1-1 draw at home to FC Twente on their first Europa League outing of the campaign.
Having finished bottom of the group in a calamitous Champions League run in 2023/24, Erik ten Hag and co would have been looking to get going in a far more positive fashion this time around – although former Rangers man Sam Lammers, aided by first-half goalscorer Christian Eriksen, put paid to that following his clinical second-half strike.
The hosts had taken a deserved lead at Old Trafford following a thumping finish from a resurgent Eriksen on what was his fourth successive start, although there appeared to be a lack of impetus to want to go and kill the game off – a fact that was duly punished.
Having been held to a goalless draw away to Crystal Palace last weekend, United – who have missed the most ‘big chances’ in the Premier League this season – appear to be lacking that cutting edge in front of goal, with the 7-0 thrashing of League One side Barnsley perhaps representing something of an anomaly.
The 3-0 victory over a winless Southampton is the only other game this season in which Ten Hag’s men have scored more than once, with a solution needing to be found to get the attacking unit firing again, even if it comes at the expense of Bruno Fernandes.
Bruno Fernandes' performance vs Twente
The star man of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, Fernandes has so often been the shining light in recent times, having chalked up 149 goals and assists in just 241 games for the club to date.
Even with four assists to his name across all fronts this season, however, the 30-year-old hasn’t quite looked like his usual self, particularly over the past week or so, having even lost possession on 34 occasions during a grim outing at Selhurst Park.
In what was a largely controlled performance in south London, the former Sporting CP star was far more chaotic, seemingly working at odds with those around him.
The same was true again on Wednesday evening, as he provided just a solitary key pass from his 76 touches, while also completing just two of his five dribble attempts and losing the ball 19 times.
That latter metric can be somewhat misleading, as it merely illustrates his desire to create and make things happen for his side, although at present, nothing is seemingly working in his favour.
While Ten Hag would have to be a brave man to oust his captain in the coming weeks, it’s certainly worth considering a new approach which could allow the frontline to finally click into gear.
Man Utd's attacking solution
One of the key issues facing United is the lack of a reliable goalscorer to lead the line, with new man Joshua Zirkzee – who has missed four ‘big chances’ in the league – operating far more comfortably in his side self-styled, ‘9.5’ role.
As MEN journalist Samuel Luckhurst stated following the midweek stalemate, the Dutchman offers ‘productive link-up play outside of the box without looking like scoring inside the box’, handing Ten Hag something of a dilemma over who to select.
With Rasmus Hojlund now available once again, the easy solution would be a straight swap of the Dane for Zirkzee, yet with the latter man having shown glimpses of his innate link-up play of late, it could be time for Ten Hag to try something new instead.
The solution staring the 54-year-old in the face could be to drop Zirkzee into more of a number ten role, with the 23-year-old operating in such a berth anyway, while the returning Hojlund can then slot in as the leading, orthodox number nine.
With the former Atalanta man having only just made his return from injury at Palace after limping off against Arsenal in pre-season, the United boss hasn’t been able to trial this duo as yet, although Fernandes’ limp form could provide the perfect opportunity.
With Zirkzee – who ranks in the top 16% among European forwards for progressive passes – acting as the link between midfield and attack, the Red Devils would then have a proper focal point in Hojlund to lead the line, with the 21-year-old more likely to stretch a backline as he is “lightning quick”, as per Owen Hargreaves.

Operating with two, towering forwards in a frontline may be a relic of the past, but at a time when United – who only scored 57 league goals last season – are looking blunt in attack, a Hojlund-Zirkzee partnership may be the ideal way to sharpen things up.
That may represent bad news for Fernandes, but having relied so much on the Portuguese playmaker for so long, the Old Trafford side may now need to find a new way to win.

David Miller’s 75 off 44 saved the visitors from 58 for 5

South Africa have won successive T20I series, and the second in seven rubbers in the format under Mark Boucher, with a game to spare and under severe pressure. South Africa recovered from 58 for 5 at the halfway stage of their innings to post a more-than-respectable 159, thanks to David Miller and Wiaan Mulder.Miller’s spectacular 44-ball 75 was largely responsible for South Africa scoring 101 runs off the last 10 overs and 68 in the last five to ruin an Irish display that started off miserly. Josh Little’s economy rate shot up after his first spell of 1 for 14 in two overs to 1 for 42 at the end while Mark Adair’s more than doubled from 1 for 8 in his first two overs to 2 for 33 in his final analysis.Bavuma pulled up for ‘audible obscenity’ in first T20I
Temba Bavuma has been reprimanded for the “use of an audible obscenity” during the first T20I against Ireland, played on Monday.
The Level 1 breach of the ICC’s code of conduct came when the South Africa captain was given out caught behind off Simi Singh for a run-a-ball 13 after opening the innings.
Bavuma received an official reprimand for his act, and had one demerit point added to his disciplinary record (it was his first offence in a 24-month period).
Only Mulder and Aiden Markram suffered similarly expensive fates as South Africa defended their total albeit with a new look attack. With Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje rested, Lungi Ngidi was the pace spearhead, assisted by left-arm quick Beuran Hendricks, who made his first appearance in the series. While Ngidi and Bjorn Fortuin held their ends, Hendricks made key incisions but it was the world’s top-ranked T20I bowler who stole the show.Tabraiz Shamsi finished with 3 for 14 to pull six clear on the leading wicket-takers’ list in 2021 and was responsible for dismissals of Ireland’s big players, Paul Stirling, George Dockrell and Shane Getkate. Ireland will be disappointed with their batting effort, though. No Irish batter made more than 24 and no partnership was worth more than 31.Getting their ducks in a row South Africa endured their worst start in a T20I after they lost their first two wickets in four balls without a run on the board. Temba Bavuma and Janneman Malan were dismissed in identical fashion, playing away from the body and edging to short third man. Little was the man in place and took the first catch low down and the second at shoulder height to dismiss both batters for ducks and add to the many firsts South Africa have already had on this tour. Not only did they lose to Ireland for the first time in an ODI and play them for the first time in a T20I, but they have also now lost two wickets without scoring a run for the first time in a T20I.It’s Miller-Mulder time While there is still much work for South Africa’s middle order to do, their finishers played their part after coming together at the end of the 10th over, with the score on 58 for 5. Miller and Mulder put on 58 for the sixth wicket, in 43 balls. They started out watchfully with boundary-less overs off Stirling and Little, and Miller should have been out for 19 when he was dropped by wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker. Miller then pulled Simi Singh through deep midwicket for four before Mulder hit him for six over deep midwicket to bowl his exceptional figures. The pair scored a combined 25 runs off the 16th and 17th overs and were well set to end the innings strongly. Mulder didn’t last to the end and was caught at long-on off the first ball of the 18th over but Miller went on to his third 50-plus score batting at No. 6 or lower. He single-handedly scored 32 out of the 36 runs off the last two overs, including five sixes and three in succession of the last three balls that came off Little.0 is still for O’Brien Things are not getting better for Kevin O’Brien who collected his second duck of the series and third successive in international cricket. On the evidence of his dismissals, O’Brien seems to be struggling with his timing on the drive as he was bowled by Fred Klaasen playing away from his body in an ODI against Netherlands last month, then chipped a ball that moved a touch late back to Kagiso Rabada in the first T20I and then attempted to drive an overpitched Fortuin ball in this match but gave the left-arm spinner a simple return catch. Ireland were 1 for 1 after one over and may need to look at other options in the top two.Drop, drop, catch (again) South Africa have made a habit of putting down chances in Ireland and, as was the case in the first T20I, they dropped two before they started holding on. Andy Balbirnie was let off in the second over when he steered Ngidi to Fortuin at short third man. The ball hit him in the chest area and he could not clasp it. Five overs later, Dockrell should have been Hendricks’ second wicket when he drove to mid-on where Aiden Markram dived to his left and tumbled, without the ball. But that’s where the fumbles stopped. Shamsi had Stirling caught by Miller at deep midwicket before Fortuin made up for his blunder and held on to a low chance, diving forward at cover, to dismiss Tector, and Markram also redeemed himself with a well-judged catch on the long-on rope to end Dockrell’s knock.

Glasgow Rangers were more functional than fantastic during their 1-0 Premiership victory at Ibrox over the weekend.
It took a moment of genius from Tom Lawrence to settle the match, which lacked quality throughout long spells. Jack Butland also played a huge part, making a crucial penalty save when the score was 1-0 to Rangers and that is how the match finished.
Philippe Clement now has to get through matches against Lyon in the Europa League before a league tie against St Johnstone on Sunday evening prior to the next international break.
Two wins could go a long way in further boosting morale among the supporters, but it is clear the Belgian requires more players who can make a difference during matches for the Light Blues, that’s for sure.
Long gone are the days when the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent would be able to conjure up a moment of magic if a match wasn’t going in the way of Rangers.
Under Steven Gerrard, all three were superb at times, flaunting their talents in Scotland, which eventually saw the Light Blues win the league title after a decade-long wait.
Alfredo Morelos
Losing Morelos and Kent for nothing is a decision which still rankles the Ibrox faithful, especially as on his day, Kent was one of the finest players in the country.
Ryan Kent’s statistics at Rangers
The winger first joined the club in the summer of 2018. Gerrard utilised his connections at Liverpool to secure the youngster on a season-long loan deal ahead of his first season in charge of the Ibrox side.
While ambitions to challenge Celtic for the league title were perhaps slightly premature, the club did defeat their Old Firm rivals twice across the course of the campaign, with Kent scoring in a 2-1 loss at Parkhead in March.
Glasgow Rangers attacker Ryan Kent.
Overall, the Englishman made a total of 43 appearances in all competitions for the Gers during his temporary spell, scoring six goals and chipping in with nine assists.
He endeared himself to the supporters as the season went on, looking like one of the liveliest players in the team. With his loan spell ending, it appeared as though he would go on to bigger and brighter things.
Gerrard wanted him permanently, however, and the saga went on throughout the entire summer transfer window in 2019. Finally, on deadline day, it was announced that the Anfield side had accepted an offer of £7.5m for the attacker, and he joined on a four-year deal.

Initially, it proved to be an inspired signing. The 2019/20 season saw Kent register 12 goal contributions – eight goals and four assists – but it was the following season that he was at his very best.
As the Gers strolled to the domestic title, Kent scored 13 times while grabbing 14 assists across 52 matches, underlining how important he was. Indeed, he also created nine big chances domestically, while averaging 1.8 key passes per game and succeeding with 1.9 dribbles per game, showcasing his attacking talents.
The following two seasons saw his goal contribution output drop, as he netted just six times across both the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.
As the final few months of the latter term approached, it was clear Kent was going to depart the club for nothing once his contract expired, thus ensuring the Gers suffered a major loss.
While his performances were generally poor during his final months, the club missed having a player who is able to turn a game on its head via a moment of magic.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Might Clement have signed his very own Kent-like figure this summer? Nedim Bajrami certainly looks like he’s capable of generating chances from nothing.
Nedim Bajrami’s Rangers statistics
The Albanian was linked during the final few days of the summer transfer window as Clement sought another few players in order to bolster his side.
On deadline day, the Belgian announced that he had signed Bajrami from Italian side Sassuolo for a fee of £3.4m, and it looks like money well spent.
Amid the links to the attacking midfielder, Kai Watson profiled him for the Rangers Journal, lavishing praise on him in the process, saying: “If you recognise the name Nedim Bajrami it’s probably because of the screamer he scored inside the first minute against Italy at the Euros! A technically gifted, intelligent footballer than can play in multiple positions with plenty of Serie A experience.”
He had to wait to make his debut, coming on as a sub against Dundee United, but it wasn’t long before Clement unleashed him from the start. Against Dundee in the League Cup, Bajrami grabbed an equaliser on his maiden start, before going one better against Malmö last week.
Having scored after just 23 seconds for Albania against Italy at Euro 2024, Bajrami opened his Rangers account after just 55 seconds, netting the opener against the Swedish side.
Not only that, but the player also made four key passes during the tie, while creating an impressive four big chances for his teammates, who couldn’t finish them off.
It was a stunning performance, and it proves that the Light Blues may have a player who is capable of generating moments of genius – like Kent – which could settle tight matches.
It hasn’t taken him long to get off the mark for his new club, and this ability to adapt to a new style of football and culture gives the impression that Bajrami is certainly the real deal.
Kent may have faded during his final season with the club, but there is no doubting how much of an impact he made, especially during his first three seasons at Ibrox.
Can Bajrami have a similar sort of impact? Only time will tell, but the first few weeks look very promising indeed, that’s for sure.

Seamer prises out crucial late wicket of Kohli to cap another sturdy day’s work

Ollie Robinson rose to the challenge of taking the new ball•Getty Images
From the moment of his Test debut against New Zealand, and irrespective of his off-field issues, Ollie Robinson has performed like a senior member of England’s bowling attack. And on a day of hard toil in the second Test against India at Lord’s, he rose to the challenge of filling Stuart Broad’s boots, by prising out the crucial late wicket of Virat Kohli to cap another sturdy day’s work.Robinson’s close-of-play figures of 1 for 47 in 23 overs were England’s most economical of the day, and reflective of a two-string England attack in which he and James Anderson posed a consistent threat to India’s well-set batters, but the rest found no answers as Rohit Sharma, with an overseas-best of 83, and KL Rahul, with a fine unbeaten 127, carried their side to a dominant 276 for 3 at the close. But in inducing an edge off a well-set Kohli, caught at slip by Joe Root for 42 off the second new ball, Robinson crafted an opening for England that he hoped they could yet capitalise on in the morning.”It was huge and gives us a bit of momentum for the morning,” Robinson said at the close. “The plan to him was always fourth, fifth stump, back of a length… luckily the plan worked. We toiled hard today against their batters and to be fair, they played well.”Related

India’s openers also played within themselves in tough conditions in the morning session, grafting their way to 14 for 0 in 12 overs before the introduction of Sam Curran allowed Rohit to climb onto the offensive. Robinson resumed after lunch in tandem with Mark Wood, bowling dry at one end while Wood tried in vain to prise an opening in a brisk but expensive spell at the other, but had to wait until his 21st over of the day to earn his first reward.Given that England had won the toss and chosen to bowl first under overcast skies, the returns for their day’s work were scant, but Robinson believed they lacked a bit of good fortune too.”I expected that. County cricket, you get two or three good batters, here you get six or seven good batters. That’s international cricket. I’ve shown over the last couple of games that I’m ready for the toil when it comes.”I think on another day it might have happened,” he added. “There were probably 10 or 15 play-and-misses that I could count and, on another day, we might have had them two- or three-down early. We definitely looked at conditions and thought we could get a few early ones here. It’s just one of those days where they didn’t nick it to be honest.”The swing was a little bit inconsistent, I don’t know if it was the ball or the overheads. We decided to go wobble-seam for a little bit, which we felt was a good plan, but the wicket was a little bit slow for it and not as receptive as we thought it might be.”Robinson’s promotion to the new ball came after Broad had been ruled out of the series with a calf tear, and for 24 hours before the start of the match, it seemed that Anderson too would be missing out with a quad strain. In the end, England were grateful for his indomitability, as he claimed each of the other two wickets to fall, including Rohit to break an opening stand of 126.”From speaking to him personally, he said he was absolutely fine,” Robinson said. “I think it was more precaution. It’s a long series. But he declared himself fit in the morning and you can see he’s bowled 22 overs… same old Jimmy. He bowled very well, we’ve come to expect that of him now, and he just keeps on providing.”We spoke about getting one or two with the new ball and to have them four- or five-down overnight would have been a good day. If we can get a couple of early ones in the morning we’re right in it.”

In the final Test at the MCG, he scored 92 (his best in Tests) and 50, helping South Africa to a six-wicket win and a share of the series. He finished his Test career with an economy rate of 1.74, the sixth best overall. He had a distinguished career for Natal, and played 60 first-class matches overall from 1946-47 to 1957-58, for 2158 runs at 24.80 and 96 wickets.
