Expert predictions: Tunisia vs England

England’s World Cup campaign begins at the Volgograd Arena on Monday night, when they take on Group G opponents Tunisia, and there’s a real sense of positivity around Gareth Southgate’s young and promising team. Even if they can’t quite make it to the latter stages of the competition, they at least look capable of playing some exciting football – a marked seachange from the last few years.

But will this prove to be yet another false dawn for a country that hasn’t won a major international honour in over half a century, or a genuinely new one for the promising young Lions? Football FanCast’s editor-in-chief James Jones and Sam Preston share their thoughts and predictions ahead of the 7pm kickoff…

Perhaps it’s just the blind optimism that has accompanied England before every World Cup, but it does genuinely feel as if the Three Lions have turned a corner under Southgate. He’s created a unique 3-1-4-2 system rather than simply trying to get as many big names onto the pitch as possible, and within that framework is an abundance of pace and flair.

How far can England go at this tournament?

JJ: “There definitely seems to be a good feeling about the squad at the moment and that works in our favour somewhat. The lack of pressure from the nation and the press at this point allows the team to go into the tournament playing with freedom. With that in mind, I can see us getting to the quarter-finals. Perhaps we can go even further, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

SP: “Quarter finals looks very reasonable, but given that we’ve seen nearly all the pre-tournament favourites and none of them have set the world alight, there is no reason why England can’t set their sights further than that. Mexico, Switzerland and Iceland among others have shown that the ‘big boys’ can be stunned and England should fancy themselves to do that, should the opportunity arise.”

While this England squad may lack truly stellar names, perhaps with the exception of Harry Kane, there is one significant positive to that in the variety and depth of options at Southgate’s disposal. There’s plenty of versatility within the squad as well, through players like Ashley Young, Eric Dier and Marcus Rashford, so although Southgate seems pretty set on his 3-1-4-2 setup and the players involved, there’s certainly scope to change up for specific opposition like Tunisia.

Are there any players you’d like to see come into the side for this game?

SP: “I’d choose Danny Rose over Ashley Young, because he’s a more natural left wing-back, who offers a greater threat in open play and his performance against Costa Rica showed he is back to his best. I have no qualms about the rest of the team but on the back of their friendly showings, I’m excited to see the energy that Fabian Delph, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Rashford could offer from the bench.”

JJ: “At this stage I’d be happy with any side Southgate picks but I’m interested to see how Trent Alexandar-Arnold handles himself at this level. He was brilliant for Liverpool last season and has the potential to be one of the best in the world in his position. Playing at a World Cup, and playing well, will play a huge role in his development.”

Tunisia may not exactly be a classic World Cup side, this being only their fourth tournament, but the North African nation shouldn’t be underestimated. They reached their highest ever FIFA ranking of 14th back in April and showed some quality in the warmup friendlies, drawing with both Portugal and Turkey – neither of whom are easy opposition.

Which Tunisia players could cause England the biggest problems?

JJ: “Whabi Khazri is a player who promised so much when he arrived in England but ultimately got caught up in the mess at Sunderland. He poses a real threat, as do Anice Badri and Ellyes Skhiri, who are arguably Tunisia’s two key players at this tournament.”

SP: “I won’t pretend to be an expert on Tunisia but from what I’ve read in a week where I’ve convinced myself that they must be better than we all expect, Saif-Eddine Khaoui appears to be the main creator because Youssef Msakni is injured. But, cliche as it sounds, Tunisia are a well-drilled side who would be happy with 0-0 and know how best to set up to frustrate England.”

What key factor does an England victory rest on?

SP: Yet another cliche here, but an early goal. Tunisia will set up deep and let England have the ball so the longer the game wears on without us scoring or creating many clear chances, the nervier the game may become. An early strike would settle the nerves, forcing Tunisia to come out at some stage and offering England much more space in behind for their lively attackers to exploit.

JJ:“I think a positive England result will come down to whether they play with the confidence and intensity we know they can when they’re at their best. With less pressure on them than other tournaments, this is the perfect opportunity for them to go out there and really show us what they can do.”

And finally lads, let’s hear your score predictions…

JJ:“It won’t be comfortable but it’ll be 2-0 England. Three points on the board and one step closer to bringing football home.”

SP:“As much as a crushing victory – coupled with the struggles of the favourites – would get the country rocking, I’d definitely take a 1-0 here. Russia aside, nobody has started off this World Cup in sparkling style and much of that is down to how much time the ‘underdogs’ have had to prepare their defensive gameplans. Tunisia will be no different but I still think England will edge it 1-0.”

Newcastle fans react to £15m Sturridge link

Reports suggest Newcastle have been offered another chance to sign Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, but fans are completely against a summer swoop.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle have been “offered the chance” to sign Sturridge this summer.

The Magpies failed in a loan bid for the England international in January, as the Liverpool man pulled the plug late on in favour of a switch to West Brom, despite Rafael Benitez and Jürgen Klopp having agreed on a move to Tyneside.

The report claims Liverpool have now slapped a £15m price tag on the striker for a permanent move.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255853″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch West Ham’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

Sturridge scored two Premier League goals in 16 appearances last season, although over half of those showings came from the bench.

The English international scored 21 league goals in 29 games in 2013-14, and is averaging nearly a goal per 90 minutes since his 2013 move to Liverpool. However, his injury record would make him a huge risk.

Fans obviously haven’t forgot about him snubbing them in January either, a move that forced Benitez to turn to Islam Slimani instead.

Koscielny posts update about his injury recovery, Arsenal fans react

Arsenal were heavily criticised last season for their performances at the back.

Shkodran Mustafi took the brunt of the criticism, while Laurent Koscielny also came under fire.

The season ended terribly for the latter, though, as he suffered an Achilles injury that ruled him out of France’s World Cup campaign in Russia.

The centre-back, who has been capped 51 times for his country, is now working towards full fitness.

Is this the best World Cup ever? Give us your thoughts here and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

At the age of 32, though, it is fair to suggest that Koscielny could struggle to earn his way back into the setup.

On Monday, the defender posted a video on Instagram showing that he is now able to walk without the use of crutches.

Arsenal have not provided a definitive timeline of recovery for the Frenchman, but plenty of fans are keen for him to make a comeback.

As well as ousting whoever takes one of the centre-back slots, Koscielny will have to impress new manager Unai Emery, who has added to the defence this summer by recruiting right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner.

On Reddit, Arsenal fans have been posting their reactions to the defender’s injury update.

Tottenham Hotspur prepare new £21m offer to sign 20-goal striker

Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to make a new offer worth £21million for West Bromwich Albion star Saido Berahino, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from the Hawthornes in recent weeks, with Spurs already having an £18million offer turned down by the Baggies.

And although West Brom have set an asking price of £25million, the Lilywhites are confident that their new proposal will secure Berahino’s services before the end of the transfer window.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen on linking up star striker Harry Kane and Berahino in a two-pronged attack, and has sold Roberto Soldado to Villarreal to make room for the England U-21 star.

Berahino was left out of the West Brom side which succumbed to a 3-2 loss against Chelsea on Sunday, signifying that the striker is edging close to an exit.

After the game, West Brom manager Tony Pulis, who is livid with the situation, said: “Why are we talking about Saido? Because of the transfer window. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

“For it to be going through the start of the season is ridiculous. We should be talking about this game. This wouldn’t be an issue, a problem.

“Saido is a great lad. It happens where it can be disruptive, and it has been disruptive. I had a good chat with him yesterday and he’s fine, no problems, but it’s the transfer window.

“Why can’t we have a system where it finishes before the start of the season.”

The Baggies will hope to bounce back from their loss when they travel to the Britannia to face Stoke City next weekend.

Last season, Berahino made 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring 20 goals.

After a Champions’ display against United, is this Arsenal’s best chance yet?

Arsenal’s title chances shot up from possible to promising on Sunday as they thumped Manchester United in a 3-0 thriller at the Emirates Stadium. But far from simply three points propelling the Gunners up to second in the Premier League table, leapfrogging the Red Devils in the process, the emphatic win produced the most convincing audition yet of their title credentials in what was a champions’ performance from the first minute to the last.

With Chelsea seemingly already out of contention after losing to Southampton on Saturday and plummeting all the way down to 16th place, this could well be Arsenal’s best chance of claiming the English crown since their second-place finish in 2005.

Arsenal’s results in big games have certainly shown significant improvement since the turn of 2015. During the second half of last season, they drew with the Blues and United and beat the Citizens at the Etihad – the Gunners’ first away victory over reigning Premier League champions since 2011.

[ffc-gal cat=”arsenal” no=”5″]

Yet, the 2-0 over City wasn’t quite as special as the result on Sunday. Whilst Arsenal went against type to score twice on the break at Eastlands, they dominated Manchester United in all departments for the first half an hour before sitting back, holding shape and letting the Red Devils grow weary with frustration for the remaining 60 minutes.

The twenty-minute goal fest wasn’t the surprising part, although it was Arsenal’s most impressive romping against high quality opposition for some time. It demonstrated the level of attacking quality we’ve all come to expect from the north London outfit and indeed any club should expect from £77million duo Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

But the Gunners have found themselves in such a position before only for their goal lust to take over – sometimes to their benefit, sometimes not. What impressed most about the United win was the pragmatism, restrain and resilience they showed in slowing the game down and letting the visitors keep the ball – as long as they weren’t doing anything too dangerous with it.

It was a ruthless performance that illustrated more than one side to Arsenal, that required patience, discipline and the understanding that controlling possession doesn’t necessarily equate to controlling the match. It was reminiscent of Chelsea’s dominant displays during the early stages of last season where they spent the first half attacking and the second making sure nothing got through – which is precisely why I’ve labelled it a ‘Champions’ performance’.

Don’t get me wrong. This Arsenal side still has a few weaknesses that might catch up with them. But so does every side involved in the title race this year.

Manchester United are depending on a midfielder at centre-back and a 19 year-old up front, whilst Manchester City seem to become dysfunctional whenever one of their big four – Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero – are missing. Chelsea, meanwhile, the club Arsenal have struggled against most in recent years, are already out of the picture after one of the most disastrous starts to a title defence in Premier League history. The Blues may re-emerge as a nuisance in the title race, but they won’t be its ultimate winners.

The real test now comes in December when the sky blue half of Manchester visits the Emirates. City are the bookies’ favourite for the title after adding £152million’s worth of talent to a squad that have already lifted the Premier League trophy twice in the last five years. But if Arsenal produce the same level of ruthlessness, defensive pragmatism and offensive quality they showed against United, I’m sure it will be another title-worthy result and performance.

Where exactly are Man United heading under Van Gaal?

Louis van Gaal is well underway into his second season in the Manchester United dugout, and it seems the club have rarely got going.

Despite an improvement on David Moyes’ tenure, and a brief spell towards the end of last year where both Liverpool and Man City were trounced – the van Gaal era has been somewhat stop-start.

Much has been made about the system the Dutchman wants to put in place. Varying from a 3-5-2 that had been deployed upon his arrival, to a 4-3-3 and now a 4-3-2-1. Clearly, he is not scared of mixing up his tactics, but how can his players really get used to it?

The direction of the club doesn’t seem to be defined. They’ve been dragged back into the top four, which had to have been the main objective.

[ffc-gal cat=”manchester-united” no=”5″]

However, with no particular playing style they are relying on own goals like the result against Tottenham, or a deflection of the sort we saw against Aston Villa.

Perhaps the new players will click but until they do, more frustrating results like the stalemate against Newcastle will come. Wayne Rooney is struggling, and Memphis Depay has been equally as frustrating for fans as he has been frustrated himself.

With Morgan Schneiderlin pairing Bastian Schweinsteiger in the holding roles, there is not much penetration. Both players are wonderful additions and fantastic in possession, but the likes of Ander Herrera should be the ones to provide the creative spark that was so far been absent.

With Herrera sat on the bench, van Gaal seems to rely on brining on the previously outcast Javier Hernandez in order to nick a goal, or pumping a ball up to Marouane Felliani.

So, where are United heading? When the 64-year old arrived at Bayern Munich, his style helped set the foundations for the side we see today at the Allianz. While in charge at the Camp Nou, it was he who gave the likes of Andres Iniesta the chance to break the first team.

He has a bucket load of experience in managing top class clubs and creating his own style. It just hasn’t yet seem to have arrived in Manchester, it’s only ever been tantalisingly close. The ides of the Dutchman may just be too much to reach during a three year project.

There, of course, is still time for the players to click and the Red Devils to march to their first league title post Sir Alex Ferguson. Ashley Young, Luke Shaw and Christ Smalling have all significantly improved since van Gaal took over, and if that theme can continue – they have quite a squad on their hands.

Huge signings are also being linked with the club, despite the £240m spent over the past two seasons. There is still a chance.

A definitive way of playing must soon emerge at Old Trafford, or van Gaal will see plenty more frustrating results like the one against Newcastle. He has just over a year and a half for it to click.

Recovering Man City star hoping to play big part in Liverpool clash

Manchester City star Sergio Aguero has revealed he hopes to be 100% fit for their clash against Liverpool this weekend, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

Aguero sustained a hamstring injury while he was on international duty with Argentina back on October 9, with his last game for the Sky Blues being their 6-1 win over Newcastle United in which he scored an incredible five goals.

WANT MORE? >> Liverpool Transfer News | Manchester City Transfer News

However, City have been boosted by his return to full training this week, with the former Atletico Madrid star desperate to play a part when Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side visit the Etihad on Saturday.

“I do hope I can play in this game,” Aguero told MCFC.com.

“I’m doing everything in my power to get to the match in top condition.

“It’s been a frustrating time. Obviously the game against Newcastle was special because it’s not every week you get to score five goals in one game.

“The only other occasion I remember scoring five in a single match was when I was 12.

“I was playing in the pre-youth divisions for Independiente (in Argentina) and it was the first important tournament that I’d participated in. We played against a local team and won 7-0 and I scored five times but it doesn’t happen too often, does it?

“I managed to score four against Tottenham last season, which was the most I’d scored as a professional up to that point.”

The 27-year-old went on to praise ex-City midfielder James Milner, who made a switch to Anfield during the summer on a free transfer due to the lack of regular playing time.

“I hope he is able to recover. He’s a great player though it will be odd to see him wearing another team’s colours,” he added.

“He is a true professional and I’m sure he’s going to come against us with everything he’s got.”

Aguero was the Premier League’s top scorer with 26 goals in 33 league appearances last season, supplying an additional eight assists in the process.

10 replacements for Man United legend Gary Neville on Monday Night Football

At 7pm this evening, Jamie Carragher and Ed Chamberlain will be in the Monday Night Football studio proving life does exist after Gary Neville.

Since first being hired by Sky Sports in 2012, the former Manchester United defender has emerged as the indisputable king of Premier League punditry, but he’s now vacated his analytical duties to accept the incredible opportunity of managing Valencia until the end of the season.

So although Everton face Crystal Palace this evening in what looks to be an intriguing clash, all attention will be focused on the pre-match and post-match analysis and whether Carragher and Chamberlain can fill G-Nev’s almighty void.

The Liverpool legend has already confirmed on Twitter that MNF will call upon guest pundits until the end of the season. But the question on everybody’s lips is quite simply; who will take the job from next season onwards?

It’s not too easy predicting a pundit, because they could be anybody from players to journalists and managers to referees, but here’s Football FanCast’s 10 favourite suggestions…

ROY KEANE

He’d restore the Manchester United-Liverpool balance in the Sky Sports studio and like Gary Neville certainly won’t hold back on his assessment of certain players.

Roy Keane boasts not only the experience of an incredible playing career but also added lessons from his admittedly less successful spell in management – which would offer something the Monday Night Football team don’t currently have.

The retired midfield enforcer doesn’t shy away from controversy and has been solid since taking a regular punditry gig with ITV. But he can be rather closed-minded and the Irishman’s generally condemning tone could become grating over the course of a four-hour show.

DANNY MURPHY

Match of the Day’s best, in my opinion, now that Alan Hansen is retired and Mark Lawrenson only fills in when others aren’t available.

The retired midfielder has never done an in-depth analysis of Gary Neville proportions but his 90-second round-ups on MOTD tend to be somewhat more insightful than the generic ‘he was good, he was bad’ drivel that comes from some of his colleagues.

Perhaps Murphy’s greatest asset is his willingness to look for positives rather than negatives from players, whilst also taking into context their ability.

But a double-barrel of ex-Reds in the Sky Sports studio certainly won’t sit well with all viewers.

Jonathan Wilson/Michael Cox

A somewhat out-of-the-box suggestion that would take Monday Night Football down a slightly different route.

Journalist Jonathan Wilson is the famous writer of Inverting the Pyramid and the founder of The Blizzard, whilst colleague Michael Cox runs the highly popular ZonalMarking.com.

Both have written for the broadsheets and both are considered to be at the top of their field – they’re almost the Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi of journalistic tactical analysis.

They’d bring something new and more sophisticated to MNF. Screen presence could be a problem, however, and some viewers might find it a little dry.

Chris Kamara

Don’t be fooled by Chris Kamara’s amusing antics for the Soccer Saturday crew – the former Brentford midfielder’s work for Goals on Sunday is a much better reflection of his ability.

He’s laid back on camera, presents well, asks interesting questions during interviews and although the show isn’t exactly known for its analysis, he makes simple but very agreeable points.

Kamara would bring a sense of humour to Monday Night Football and in my opinion, would surprise many with his knowledge of the game. He did, after all, represent 10 different teams throughout his career and have two spells in management.

The 57-year-old’s familiarity with Sky Sports and already well-established profile are other huge plus points.

CRAIG BELLAMY

He’s a punditry target already mooted by The Daily Mail and would certainly be an interesting appointment.

Craig Bellamy has already caused shockwaves during his brief stints in the Sky Sports studio, firstly for his quirky fashion sense and secondly for blasting Newcastle fans in November 2014.

A notoriously feisty character during his playing days, the former winger-forward won’t hold back on his opinions and certainly can’t be accused of bias despite Liverpool ties, having represented 10 clubs throughout his career including Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Another ‘pro’ is that the Welshman retired fairly recently, but lack of experience with the Sky Sports whiteboard could play against the Welshman.

JOHN TERRY

John Terry’s contract expires at the end of the season and it remains to be seen if he’ll be offered a new deal following what looks set to become Chelsea’s worst ever campaign under Roman Abramovich.

The Blues skipper is loved in west London and loathed by many out of it. But Terry’s controversial past would bring some anticipatory buzz to the MNF studio and there’s no doubt he knows what he’s talking about, as arguably the best centre-back of the Premier League era.

Likewise, he’d offer a nice balance with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher – almost his direct opposite at Anfield. But Terry’s prior digressions, namely racism and sex scandals, could see him deemed as simply too unpopular.

DANNY HIGGINBOTHAM

Danny Higginbotham’s performances as a co-commentator have met a mixed response, but he could fare much better as an in-studio pundit.

Indeed, the former defender’s delivery is rather dry and his speech patterns can be monotonous. But he clearly has a real passion for tactical discussion, even if he overloads on details at times, and that could see him shine with the Sky Sports whiteboard at his disposal.

Furthermore, although the 34-year-old began his career at Manchester United, he’s not really associated with the Red Devils or any other big club – spending his playing days mainly at Derby County, Southampton, Stoke City and Sunderland.

That objectivity adds to Higginbotham’s credentials and he’s not been out of the game too long, last representing Altrincham in 2014, so certainly can’t be accused of harbouring outdated views.

DAVID MOYES

He’s already a rank outsider to replace Gary Neville and having suffered a turbulent few years since stepping down as Everton manager in summer 2013, David Moyes might welcome a short break from management.

Although the Scot failed to deliver at Manchester United and Real Sociedad, his credentials are undoubted and his experience in management would bring something new to the Monday Night Football studio.

Likewise, the 52-year-old’s ties with the Toffees and the Red Devils would counteract Jamie Carragher’s Liverpudlian bias. But has Moyes’ ill-fated stints at Old Trafford and in La Liga eaten away at his kudos?

GUS POYET

Another managerial suggestion, Gus Poyet could prove to be a masterstroke if viewers can get over his occasionally inaudible accent.

The Uruguayan’s insightful remarks and confident demeanour impressed many when working with ITV during the 2014 World Cup and there’s no doubting his Premier League credentials, having represented Chelsea and Spurs during his playing days before serving as Sunderland manager for around 18 months.

The former midfielder has a good sense of humour and certainly won’t shy away from expressing controversial views or getting into heated exchanges with Jamie Carragher.

Currently working with AEK Athens, however, it appears Poyet is still focused on management for now.

PAT NEVIN

A somewhat underrated pundit, Pat Nevin’s occasional analysis pieces for BBC Sport’s website are always insightful and delivered with real passion – even if it often comes with a predictably tame BBC vibe.

Many are surprised the former Chelsea and Everton winger doesn’t get more TV work and although he’s not someone who is particularly famed for his analysis of matches, he’s very good at spotting recurring trends in the Premier League.

Nevin’s now aged 52 and hasn’t worked in the game for the best part of two decades. But his opinions are still up to date and he won’t be a pundit who makes controversial or exaggerative remarks simply for the sake of it.

Nevin’s never been one for condemning individual performances, however, and that lack of ruthlesness could make him seem a little weak when compared to Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.

Should we be looking to Tottenham for England’s next manager?

Mauricio Pochettino was a relative unknown when he walked through the doors at St Mary’s in January 2013.

During his playing days he was an Argentina international, who also played for Espanyol and PSG. Before arriving at Southampton he had also enjoyed a spell as manager of Espanyol.

He was coming in to replace fan favourite Nigel Adkins, who had led the Saints’ charge up from League One to the Premier League, yet could not replicate that run in the top flight.

At Southampton, Mauricio turned up using a translator to speak his English for him, yet still managed to get results and avoid relegation, with his first match being a 0-0 draw with Everton, and getting his first win with a 3-1 victory over Man City.

What followed were good results against Tottenham and Chelsea, leading Saints in the 2012/13 season to finish 14th: a brilliant position considering where they were when he joined.

It was in the 13/14 campaign that Pochettino really started to earn his plaudits, leading the Saints to 8th. It proved that this was a team on the up, but what caught the public eye most was the fact that he had pushed through a lot of English talent.

Players like Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez, Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse, Jack Cork, Nathaniel Clyne, Callum Chambers and Sam Gallagher were all given opportunities to shine. Of these players, only Cork and Ward-Prowse are yet to earn England call-ups.

When he joined Tottenham in 27th May 2014, it was viewed as a good appointment for the club.In his first season at White Hart Lane he led Spurs to a fifth place finish in the Premier League and took them to the Capital One Cup final, where they lost 2-0 to Chelsea. What Pochettino will be better known for, though, when people look back on his time at Tottenham is his ability to work with what he has and bring youngsters through.

Pochettino has been one of England’s greatest resources since Hodgson became England manager, helping to bring through ten England debutants.

With his eye for quality players, though he may not be English by blood, there is no reason why he can’t continue to have a big influence upon English football in a few years to come.

Cowardly West Brom and Chelsea fans are putting players at risk

Football has always had its violent tendencies.

We see scraps, violence and antagonism but we just seem to accept it because its the norm. But this weekend we saw some cowardly actions from some of our English fans on the terraces, in the form of coin-throwing.

Coin-throwing is an act that has had somewhat spike in popularity recently. It’s terrible to see but at the height of frustration this weekend, there were two incidents that left football fans with a rather bitter taste in their mouths, especially supporters of West Brom and Chelsea.

The Baggies fell to a pretty disappointing 3-1 away defeat to Championship outfit Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday, and some away fans took the defeat pretty poorly, as long-serving player Chris Brunt found out as he approached his supporters after the game.

As he went to give a little girl his shirt after the game, a coin was thrown from the crowd which struck him, centimetres away from his eye. The factor that makes this a little harder to swallow is that it was thrown from his own supporters, so incensed that they’d lost a cup game to lower-league opposition.

Hate in football culture runs deep across the whole country but coin-throwing is a pretty cowardly action and to be attacked by one of your own supporters must be pretty hard to take.

[ad_pod id=’yume-vid’ align=’left’]

Action needs to be taken but as quickly as we were trying to get over the incident, it cropped up again the following day, this time at Stamford Bridge.

Again there’s a story to it, which makes it a little bit hard to swallow. Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini gave his youth players a chance to experience first-team action for the first time against Chelsea in the FA Cup  and fair play to him for doing so.

Despite getting crushed 5-1, it was an important learning curve for some of the club’s future stars.

But many were disgusted to see objects thrown at City’s youngsters as they celebrated David Faupala’s first senior goal for the club. It was somewhat of a shock when they levelled and some of the home faithful reacted by launching coins at some of the youngsters as they rejoiced following the strike.

It disappointed many – not quite what you’d expect in your first taste of top-flight action. It’s frustrating and these players probably won’t be affected by this but as a young player starting out on your adventure, its not what you’d want to happen.

The FA and the police responded by saying they were going to look into both cases but it was shocking to see these actions coming back into the game, and at games where seasons weren’t going to be decided on the day.

Throwing objects at your club captain or 18-year-old’s is pretty low and it was a sad weekend in terms of actions coming from the terraces.

We can only hope the people involved are brought to justice, before this becomes a weekly occurrence.
