Colin Ingram shows class as Glamorgan triumph over Sussex

Elder statesman’s 73 combines with 22-year-old Zain-ul-Hassan’s 4 for 25 as Glamorgan address one-day slump

ECB Reporters Network13-Aug-2023The strength and class of Colin Ingram overcame a challenging pitch at Hove to give Glamorgan their second win in the Metro Bank One Day Cup at the expense of Sussex.Ingram, returning to the side, hit 73 off 75 deliveries, with eight fours and a vast six over mid-on, as Glamorgan chased down a modest target to win with 21 balls remaining. But it might have been a different story if the powerful left-hander had not been dropped by Harrison Ward at point off Sean Hunt when he had made just three.Glamorgan lost opener Tom Bevan in the second over, bowled by Fynn Hudson-Prentice for a duck. But then Ingram and Eddie Byrom (69) piled on 145 for the second wicket in 23 overs to put Glamorgan on top.Glamorgan continued to lose wickets – with cameos coming from captain Kiran Carlson and Ben Kellaway – against a tight ring of Sussex fielders. But a typically cool-head innings by Sam Northeast, who made an unbeaten 40, saw his side home. Both sides had gone into the match with one victory in four matches and needed to win all their remaining fixtures to have any realistic chance of progressing to the latter stages of the competition.Sussex decided to strengthen their batting by bringing in Ward for his first game in the competition this season. Sussex had chosen to bat but their innings was a strange affair, the best of it coming in a stand of 113 in 15 overs between James Coles (59 off 56) and Hudson-Prentice (66 off 54).Ward and Tom Haines made a ponderous start, with just 14 runs coming off the first five overs. But they accelerated with such purpose that they scored 50 off the first ten-over powerplay and looked set for a total of well over 300.They lost momentum when the unfortunate Ward, who had struck a six and five fours in a 32-ball 35, was run out responding to Haines’ call for a quick single that really didn’t exist, especially as the ball went to such a fine fielder as Carlson. After that, Sussex’s top-order batters struggled on a slow pitch, which Glamorgan exploited by bowling 29 overs of spin, with Carlson and Kellaway impressive, though the slow left-armer Prem Sisodiya proved a little expensive.Durham had scored 427 on this track earlier in the month. But yesterday, until Coles and Hudson-Prentice got together, and Glamorgan batted later in the day, scoring quick runs looked tricky, with the ball not coming onto the bat.Tom Alsop, cutting at a delivery that was too straight and full for the purpose, fell cheaply, Haines was bowled by what appeared to be a slower delivery from Zain-ul-Hassan and Tom Clark, playing too soon, was caught off a leading edge. Cheteshwar Pujara, who averaged 89 in this competition last year, and already has two centuries in the current campaign, normally scores steadily while others bat around him.But now, needing to be more aggressive, he stepped down the pitch and crashed the ball straight and was caught and bowled for 27. At 142 for five in the 32nd over the Sussex innings had reached its low point before Coles, who struck five fours, and Hudson-Prentice, who hit three fours and two sixes, pulled the innings round. But it never looked likely to be enough against a strong Glamorgan batting side.

The post-match brawl followed a strong England performance that saw them march into the semi-finals. McAtee was on hand to pounce after 10 minutes when Spain failed to clear a corner that pinballed around the area before Elliot fired home a rebound from a Jarrell Quansah effort. The Liverpool defender then gave away a penalty, dispatched by Javi Guerra, before Anderson made sure of victory in the dying seconds from the spot.

Jos Buttler: It was 'my responsibility' to tell Jason Roy of World Cup omission

‘He’s a really great mate of mine so it was a really tough call to make’, says England captain

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Sep-2023Jos Buttler felt it was his responsibility as England’s white-ball captain to inform Jason Roy that he had missed out on selection for the World Cup.Buttler rang Roy last weekend to explain his omission from England’s final squad of 15, before head coach Matthew Mott followed up shortly after. Roy had been named in a provisional squad a month previously, but missed all four of England’s ODIs against New Zealand due to back spasms and lost his place in the squad to Harry Brook. It was the second time that Buttler had told Roy that he had missed the cut for a major tournament, after his omission from England’s T20 World Cup squad a year previously. Speaking to the PA news agency at a Castore event, Buttler said it was “a really tough [phone] call to make”.Buttler said: “I don’t think any time is easy. It’s part of the job as captain that is not enjoyable, whether they’re great friends or not, it’s not a nice job to do.”I certainly feel like it’s my responsibility to give that news. Mikel Arteta is engineering an overhaul of his midfield options, with talks advancing rapidly over a deal for Brentford's Christian Norgaard while a move for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi is also expected to be announced imminently.

WHAT GALLAS SAID

Asked if letting Partey leave is the best decision, Gallas told : "I don’t know. I think with his quality, he could stay at Arsenal. With what he has offered to the club over the last few years, he can easily stay. And with their depth right now, I think it is best to add, not replace.

"I’m not sure of the reasons why he might leave, but I’m not sure it would be the best thing if he left."

Captain Wade unsure if he will be Australia's first-choice keeper at T20 World Cup

Wade was surprised to see senior players David Warner and Steven Smith in the squad but is excited to captain his country again

Alex Malcolm30-Oct-20234:06

Moody: Wade’s captaincy and experience important for Australia

Australia’s interim T20 captain Matthew Wade says he was not striving for a leadership role on the tour of India, but is keen to be a senior figure in the side for the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States next year although he is unsure if he will be the first-choice wicketkeeper. The announcement of Wade as the captain of Australia’s squad for the five-match series against India immediately following the ODI World Cup came as a surprise to some people around Australian cricket but it had long been in the works as the selectors manage the workloads of their senior players.Australia do not currently have a permanent T20I captain with Mitchell Marsh filling the role in the recent South Africa series with great success, which was the first series since Aaron Finch’s retirement. Marsh is being rested from the series against India to prepare for the home Test summer. ODI and Test captain Pat Cummins is also missing the tour alongside Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green.Wade was Finch’s long-time vice-captain having led Australia in seven T20Is when Finch was injured, including in their final game of last year’s T20 World Cup against Afghanistan. But he was not initially selected for the South Africa series with the selectors to give Josh Inglis some opportunities with the gloves, with the intention of Wade returning against India. Wade did end up touring South Africa as an injury replacement for Glenn Maxwell but did not play.Related

Speaking the day after he helped guide Tasmania to what he described as his best-ever Sheffield Shield win against Queensland, making 105 in a fourth innings chase of 432, Wade said he had not expected to be named Australia captain again.”I’ve never really strived so much for leadership,” he said. “I think you kind of look after your own backyard and those things kind of take care of themselves.”With the relationships that I’ve got with [coach] Andrew McDonald and obviously [head selector] George Bailey and all the coaching staff around the Australian team and selectors, whatever situation I was going to be going over to India in it would have been in a senior role anyway.”So it’s just a bit of a cherry on top after a long career I suppose, to get another chance to go and captain in a country that is so much fun to play, it’s going to be a hell of a time.”Wade was one of Australia’s heroes of the 2021 T20 World Cup triumph but he admitted on the eve of the 2022 edition in Australia that it could possibly be his last tournament in international colours. However, he has maintained his form and, more importantly, his hunger to keep playing at the highest level. He made the decision last summer to not play Shield cricket for Tasmania after the BBL and instead travelled to the SA20 to play with Joburg Super Kings. He then went to PSL for Karachi Kings before heading back to Gujarat Titans in the IPL after winning a title with them in 2022. He was with the squad throughout the 2023 IPL but did not play a single game. He then went and played in the Hundred with London Spirit.Matthew Wade and Josh Inglis have played together for Australia but Wade has always been the first-choice wicketkeeper•BCCIInglis has long been nipping at Wade’s heels in Australia’s T20 side and has already usurped Alex Carey as the No.1 ODI wicketkeeper-batter. Both men have been named in the squad to face India but Wade will be the captain and first-choice wicketkeeper. Wade said he was unsure though whether that would be the case for the T20 World Cup next year.”We’ve got the T20 World Cup coming up, whether I’m the number one keeper there and play, whether that be that I go as a spare bat/keeper I’m not 100% sure. I don’t know if the selectors and the coaches are 100% sure.”But I want to be there. I want to play. If it ends up being that No.7 role as the wicketkeeper, I feel like I’ve probably nailed that spot down in the last few years for the Australian T20 side. So fingers crossed I get the nod in that but if I don’t I’m really comfortable going and playing my role.”Wade added he was surprised that the selectors had named David Warner and Steven Smith in the squad, despite resting a host of other senior three-format players ahead of the first Test of the summer against Pakistan in mid-December.”It’s a really exciting squad,” Wade said. “I didn’t expect to see some of the older faces in there. The guys have been over there for so long, to be honest, and they’re going to hang around and play in those games.”Matt Short, who’s come on in leaps and bounds in the last little bit, he’ll be around there. I was in South Africa and I saw these young guys perform at international level and I’m excited to go out and see them do it in India.”Despite several key players being rested, Wade expected the series against India to be the start of Australia’s preparations for the T20 World Cup next year. They only have 11 T20Is between now and the start of the tournament in June, with five against India followed by three at home against West Indies in February and three more in New Zealand later that same month.

Man Utd scouts 'didn't rate' Cody Gakpo despite Erik ten Hag recommendation as Benni McCarthy slams club transfer policy

Manchester United's transfer policy and failure to land Cody Gakpo has been criticised by former first-team coach Benni McCarthy.

Gakpo was wanted at Old Trafford by Erik ten Hag before he moved to Liverpool in January 2023. The Dutch star has gone on to win the Premier League with the Reds, while United have continued to struggle and finished last season down in 15th place in the table.

McCarthy has now lifted the lid on United's failure to sign Gakpo. The former coach, who was part of Ten Hag's staff, said he was initially seen as a perfect fit in attack for the Red Devils, but the scouting department "didn't rate" the Netherlands international and vetoed the move. McCarthy also hit out at the club's recent transfer policy after seeing a host of big-money buys fail to make any impact at Old Trafford.

WHAT MCCARTHY SAID

He told betonlinepromocodes.com: "Cody Gakpo was the one that we wanted the most and missed out on. I think he was the first player that we sat down and discussed, and decided that he was the player who would fit in perfectly. We knew we could play him alongside Marcus Rashford, when Rashy was really on song in 2022. I think we were so close to getting him. At one stage, it was ours to lose. The agent knew Erik, and there were really good talks. The manager asked me to write up a profile for the player and to take it to the scouting department, so they knew my opinion. I watched the player, I made my case for why he would be ideal. He could play on the left, he could work as a false nine. With him and Rashford we’d have been strong down the middle and on the left. Then you had Alejandro Garnacho coming through, and we wanted to play him down the right. It would have been perfect.

"Then I was told the scouting department had watched him numerous times and they didn’t rate him. They said the stats weren’t right. For me, with my experience, I know what you need to deliver at a special club. You don’t need stats to tell you that. The naked eye gives you so much more than just stats. Obviously the club have a system, and the system won, so he joined Liverpool and won the league. People can say what they like but we tried to bring in great players that would fit. I know the manager always takes the blame, but sometimes the club needs to look at itself. Good players escaped our grasp. Erik knew what we needed."

Liam Livingstone: 'I know I can affect games of cricket for England'

Allrounder relishing important role with the ball even as batting continues to misfire

Cameron Ponsonby07-Dec-2023″Are you saying I’m a bowler who bats?” Liam Livingstone responds, smiling at a question about the current role he sees himself playing in this England team. “I am at the moment!”England want Livingstone to work. A Swiss Army knife of a cricketer, he provides a level of versatility that few others in the world game could dream of. He hits massive sixes, bowls legbreaks and offbreaks, and is excellent in the field. Whatever you need, Livi’s got one of them in the back. But since the start of the World Cup, the form with the bat has departed entirely, as an average of 11.00 is paired with a bowling average of 35.28. Go back slightly further to include the New Zealand series in September, where he made a fine 95 not out, and the figures are kinder, but still the wrong way round. 26.30 and 31.27.Nevertheless, in the second ODI against West Indies, he was at his best with the ball. Three wickets, one of which broke a 129-run partnership between Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford that threatened to take the match away from England, and a third that clean bowled Hope for 68. Until that point, Hope had scored 177 runs against England this series without cause or concern. Then Livingstone ripped one past bat and pad.”Yeah I think so,” Livingstone confirmed as to whether it was his best ODI wicket to date. “I was speaking to Daws [Richard Dawson] before, it’s probably the two balls back-to-back, being able to do exactly what I wanted – to execute my plan pretty much perfectly.”Related

Harry Brook on three-year deal: 'I was going to sign as soon as England called'

It was with his legbreaks that Livingstone removed Hope, but another string to his bow has been the improvement of his offbreaks that he employs almost exclusively to left-handers. Across his 24 ODIs, he has only taken three wickets with his offies, but his economy of 4.95 (according to ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball data) means he is able to defend as an offbreak bowler and attack as a legspinner.”I guess the most pleasing thing for me now is I feel like I can bowl in a number of different situations and scenarios, and also be able to impact the game like I have done today,” Livingstone said. “So yeah, I guess the role I played [on Wednesday] was very different to the one I played the other day.”It’s something I’ve worked really hard on for a number of years. It’s probably not come as naturally to me as what batting has over the last five years. So it’s nice [to have] that when my batting’s not really in the best place at the moment.”Livingstone debuted for England in T20 cricket in 2017 and was a non-playing member of the Test squad that travelled to New Zealand in 2018. But it is only the last couple of years that he has forced his way into being almost ever-present in both England’s white-ball teams. His player-of-the-tournament performance in the inaugural edition of the Hundred, combined with a T20I century against Pakistan and that time he hit the ball over the Football Stand at Headingley, has meant the lust for Livingstone remains. But his use as a lower-order belter means that his feel for the blade is diminishing. In 48 innings for England, he has faced more than 40 deliveries just three times.”If I had the reason I’d have probably changed it by now,” Livingstone reflected on where his difficulties with the bat are coming from. “I keep turning up to training, trying as hard as I can. I guess maybe just try to put a little bit less pressure on myself and go out and enjoy myself like I have done my whole career. It only takes one innings to change it around. I’ve had it before and I’m sure when things do change around, I’ll look back on this time in my career as something that was probably a massive learning curve for me.”But I still feel like I can affect games of cricket for England and that’s the major bonus for me at the moment. The ball’s coming out of my hand really well and I know for a fact that things are going to change around with the bat.”In the opening ODI, Livingstone had batted well for 17 before a length delivery from Romario Shepherd kept low and trapped him lbw. He is an almost certain starter for the remaining six white-ball matches of the tour as England search for a combination that allows them to play both himself and Sam Curran as all-rounders. However, despite England’s recent World Cup struggles and his own lack of form with the bat, Livingstone has remained level when it comes to the game.”Yeah, life goes on, the sun comes up.” Livingstone said of his main learnings from the World Cup campaign. “Cricket’s a sport, we are incredibly privileged to be able to play for our country. But it’s not the be-all and end-all. I was incredibly happy to be able to go home and see my grandad, who’s not in the greatest health at the moment. He’s in the latest stages of his life. So that gives incredible perspective for me.”There’s more to life than cricket, and cricket while we’re playing and while we’ve got this opportunity to represent our country, it should be enjoyed.”
