Everton manager news on Lampard

Some Everton fans have been left fuming over some manager news involving Frank Lampard.

Writing earlier in the week for The Times, which has since been shared by The Toffee Blues on their Twitter page, journalist Paul Joyce has revealed that the Goodison Park faithful have now started talks with Lampard over potentially becoming their next permanent manager, following the temporary appointment of Duncan Ferguson.

Lampard has been out of work since January last year, after leaving Chelsea in ninth spot despite big spending the previous summer.

It is telling that Thomas Tuchel came in and straight away won the UEFA Champions League with the same group of players.

Nonetheless, the ex-Derby County boss is still relatively inexperienced as a manager, and so the Toffees job may be too big for him at this moment in time.

Age does not worry Katich and Co

Simon Katich turns 35 on Saturday but believes age will not be a factor as long as he continues to play well

Cricinfo staff19-Aug-2010Simon Katich turns 35 on Saturday but believes age will not be a factor as long as he continues to play well. Katich has been Australia’s most consistent batsman over the past year, but he, Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey will all be in the old-age category for the India and Ashes series.”There’s a fair bit being made of that and you can’t hide from the fact that there are going to be three of us over 35 in the top four or five,” Katich told the Australian. “From my point of view I know I’m older but at the same time I’m as hungry as I’ve ever been. I’m enjoying playing cricket again and my attitude has been the same for the last two or three years.”Katich, who came back to the team in 2008, said he didn’t look too far ahead. “But at the same time I’m not going to think ,’just because I’m 35 it’s over’, because the last three years of my career have been the best,” he said. “As soon as you start assuming things because of your age you start worrying about the wrong things.”Since his recall in the West Indies, Katich has scored 2721 runs at 54.42, with eight centuries, in 29 Tests. In the nine matches before the Leeds game against Pakistan, he posted at least 50.He has two Tests against India to prepare for the Ashes, the main event of the Australian summer. “I’m confident with us playing in Australia, we know our conditions well and we’re looking forward to playing at home,” he said. “Hopefully that will hold us in good stead, but anything can happen.”Doug Bollinger is another player who has performed well in the Test side, taking 42 wickets in his past nine appearances, and he has supported Ricky Ponting’s push for a 5-0 Ashes victory. ”That is the benchmark we can set ourselves and if we can achieve that it would be brilliant,” he said in the Sydney Morning Herald. “Winning 5-0, especially at home, you wouldn’t see me for a couple of weeks, that would be awesome.”After becoming a regular in the team, Bollinger said he felt like part of the squad, although he struggled in the series against Pakistan. ”During the England tour, I was thinking one too many things, certain things crept into my game that shouldn’t have,” he said. ”I probably wasn’t getting as many wickets as I wanted, but that’s what happens in sport.”

Phil Hay has bad news for Leeds United fans

Leeds United are unlikely to make any late additions before Monday’s transfer deadline…

What’s the word?

That’s according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, who claims that the Yorkshire giants aren’t prepared to submit a third bid for RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson after having two offers rejected.

“Transfer situation is essentially this – no third offer for Aaronson and Salzburg unwilling to sell in this window. Club will wait until the summer for him and won’t bid for another centre mid now,” he revealed on Twitter.

“If Summerville asks to leave and goes, a replacement needed. A fair bit of European interest in Summerville, not least in Germany and Holland, but [Marcelo] Bielsa doesn’t want to lose him.”

This won’t go down well

The Argentinian head coach has suffered from an injury crisis at Thorp Arch for much of the campaign, resulting in the desperate need for some form of reinforcements this month.

Leeds very rarely conduct business during the winter but the aforementioned situation highlights why their plans have somewhat changed, and whilst they have failed in their attempts to sign Aaronson, they haven’t really looked elsewhere, which is disappointing.

They haven’t signed a central midfielder in four years – and counting.

Earlier this month, Bielsa was unable to field much of a bench against West Ham United in the Premier League. He named eight academy prospects among nine substitutes. Similarly, 15-year-old Archie Gray was involved against Arsenal in December when there were 11 players absent through injury.

Among those missing recent have been last season’s top goalscorer Patrick Bamford, who has missed 17 of their last 18 league games, club captain Liam Cooper and influential anchorman Kalvin Phillips.

The latter two are absent until March at the very earliest.

These are three vital players to Leeds, so it’s no wonder they have struggled in their absence, even flirting with the prospect of a relegation dogfight – something that still isn’t out of the realms of possibility.

As you can see in the direct replies to Hay’s latest update, there aren’t many supporters who are happy to hear of such news. “Absolute joke,” one fan claimed, whilst another one deemed it to be a “shambles of a window.” Victor Orta was also slammed as a failure and some were left very worried about the chances of relegation now.

This development is certainly not going down well around west Yorkshire, and the fan base will be livid if they fail to sign someone by Monday night – that’s for sure.

AND in other news, Leeds United eyeing late January bargain in £10m “phenomenon”, Bielsa would love him…

Summerville a big loser from Leeds’ window

Crysencio Summerville could be the biggest loser from Leeds United’s transfer activity this January…

What happened?

The 20-year-old gem has struggled to edge his way into Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team since his £1.3m move from Feyenoord in September 2020 and after the Yorkshire outfit rejected a loan move for him, he could struggle to ever breakthrough at Elland Road.

There was interest from Germany, where Hamburg SV were thought to be hugely keen, and his home country, Holland, as per The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

Game time unlikely

Summerville is way down the pecking order in west Yorkshire as Bielsa’s wing department is well-stocked with the likes of Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Daniel James all ahead of him.

All three have been featuring in the starting XI in recent matches due to the absence of Patrick Bamford through injury but when the England international returns to action, it’s likely that one of the latter two will be dropped to the bench, thus taking the Dutch youngster’s place and potentially only chance to impress.

If he’s unable to get minutes from the bench, then he’ll have to get it from further academy matches, where he has already proved his credentials – as per Transfermarkt, Summerville has scored nine goals and provided eight assists in 24 appearances for the U23s.

He has managed only 225 for the first team.

The 5 foot 9 dynamo, who has been dubbed “impossible to handle” and a “bag of tricks”, is surely going to find it tough ever making a mark at Leeds.

A loan move for the remainder of the season would have been a win-win for Bielsa. The youngster gets a chance to play regularly at a senior level and then his role at Elland Road can be assessed in the summer, where they could sell him on for profit or integrate him as a key first-team player.

Therefore, there isn’t a bigger loser at United than Summerville following their lacklustre transfer window.

Wolves made big Jota transfer error

While Fosun have been rather proactive when it comes to spending money on new players to join Wolves during the previous transfer windows, they have also seen quite a number of players leave the Midlands club.

One player that left Molineux in recent years for a rather hefty fee was winger Diogo Jota, who signed for fellow Premier League club Liverpool back in September 2020 in a deal worth a reported fee of £41m, making him their record departure.

Wolves originally signed the Portuguese international on loan from Spanish club Atletico Madrid in the 2017 summer transfer window before securing him on a permanent deal a year later for a reported fee of £12.3m.

Before making the move to Anfield, the 25-year-old racked up 44 goals and 19 assists in 131 appearances across all competitions.

Since joining the Merseyside club, Jota, who has been described as being a “pressing monster” by Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders has gone on to make a total of 62 appearances with an impressive number of 30 goals under his belt.

A few months before leaving Molineux, Transfermarkt had his market value listed as £25.2m, whereas it now stands at £54m, highlighting just how impressive he has been on the pitch since joining Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Also, having earned himself an overall performance rating of 7.24/10 from WhoScored this season, which would comfortably make him the highest-rated player at Molineux by the same metric, there’s no denying his talents and capabilities.

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that Fosun made a big error by allowing the winger to leave the Midlands club and strengthen one of the clubs above them in the league table.

Labelled as an “exceptional” player by Klopp, Jota could have been a vital player for Bruno Lage this season had Wolves not sold him to the Reds given how the Old Gold have only scored 24 goals in 25 league games this season.

Moving forward, if Lage’s side are able to secure European football by the end of the season, they should be looking to the upcoming summer transfer window to bring in some attacking reinforcements that can help the team be more clinical in front of goal and forget about Jota.

Disciplined Mangalore defend modest target

Round-up of the eighth day’s action in the Karnataka Premier League

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Sep-2010A disciplined bowling performance enabled Mangalore United to defend a modest target of 136 by two runs against Malnad Gladiators in Bangalore.Malnad’s chase started on the wrong note, with opener Shashindra perishing for a duck and his partner Ganesh Sathish consuming 32 balls for his 19. Offspinner Udit Patel then got into the act, taking 3 for 22, as Malnad slumped to 74 for 5 in 14 overs. An asking rate of over ten an over proved too much for the remaining batsmen despite some late hitting from Nishanth Hegde and Sanjay Kumar.Mangalore’s middle order had earlier led their recovery after a disastrous start left them at 2 for 2. Medium-pacer Raju Bhatkal took 3 for 21, but Rongsen Jonathan, Azghar Pasha and Vijay Chavan helped their side to 135.Jayprakash Shetty’s unbeaten 76 off 51 balls took Bijapur Bulls to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Mysore Maharaajas in Bangalore. The target of 165 seemed stiff after Bijapur were reduced to 1 for 2 in the first over of the chase. But Shetty and wicketkeeper Devraj Patil added 116 runs in just 65 deliveries to dash Mysore’s hopes. After Patil fell in the 12th over, Stuart Binny supported Shetty as Bijapur won with 15 balls to spare.Shoaib Manager’s 59 off 30 deliveries had earlier taken Mysore to a challenging 164 for 7. Manager hit 5 sixes to help his team recover from 69 for 4 in the 13th over.

Jewell shines for Victoria with half-century

The opener Nick Jewell’s half-century helped Victoria to 3 for 228 against Western Australia on a day disrupted by rain in Perth

Jewell wasn’t expecting to play much for Victoria this summer as he concentrated on his coaching career, but he was a late call-up to replace the injured Chris Rogers and showed he still had the batting form.Jewell, who knocked back a state contract in the off-season, opened with a useful 74 that provided a base for the Bushrangers. Dropped on 10 by Adam Voges, Jewell took advantage and put on 113 with Michael Hill, who fell to the debutant Ryan Duffield on 47.David Hussey also became the maiden victim of Michael Beer, the spinner who moved from Victoria during the winter. Hussey edged trying to cut and was out for 43 just before the players left the field for a second rain interruption. Aaron Finch (35) and Andrew McDonald (9) were not out when more rain and bad light cut the day to 67 overs.

Celtic had a nightmare on Timothy Castagne

Back in January of 2019, Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side were reported to be extremely interested in the signing of a relatively unknown right-back, who went by the name of Timothy Castagne.

Indeed, The Daily Record claimed that the Hoops had made the Atalanta full-back their top priority in the winter window, with Rodgers viewing the Belgium international as a direct replacement for Mikael Lustig – who looked as if he would be leaving Parkhead at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

However, despite offering £8m for the then-23-year-old’s services, the Bhoys failed to get a deal over the line for the promising defender, with Atalanta believed to be looking for a figure in the region of £12m in order to sanction the right-back’s sale.

And, in May of 2019, after finding himself much more involved with Gian Piero Gasperini’s first-team squad, Castagne himself revealed just how close he came to joining Celtic, stating: “It’s incredible how quickly things in football can change.

“In December, I wasn’t starting any games and there was an £8m move to Celtic on the table. It looked like I was leaving, but the club wanted £12m and the deal collapsed.

“Since then, having not played for 13 games, I played just about every other game and we qualified for the Champions League. So it’s been an unbelievable turnaround for me.”

However, flash forward 16 months and Castagne would eventually find himself playing for Rodgers, although not at Celtic Park.

Indeed, in September 2020, Leicester City parted with £21.5m in order to bring the then-24-year-old full-back to the King Power, since which time the Belgian has gone on to establish himself as a first-team regular with the Premier League side.

Furthermore, his prominence in the English top-flight has also seen his market value soar, with the £63k-per-week defender now being worth around £25m in today’s market – something that will undoubtedly leave an incredibly sour taste in Celtic mouths.

Indeed, while £12m certainly would have been an eye-catching fee for the Hoops to cough up for a little-known right-back, the 26-year-old who Gerry Taggart dubbed a “proper player” has since proven he would have been well worth the outlay – both financially and in terms of performance – leading us to believe that Celtic had something of a nightmare when missing out on the full-back in 2019.

Gabba challenge excites Cook

Though Australia have not lost a Test at the Gabba in 22 years, Alastair Cook believes that England are in with a good chance to create history

Andrew Miller23-Nov-2010After 24 days of their Australia campaign, England’s cricketers arrived at the Gabba for the first time on Tuesday afternoon, and set about the task of visualising every aspect of the challenge that lies ahead of them in the coming days and weeks. With its imposing stands and cavernous atmosphere, the Gabba can be every bit as daunting as the 22-year unbeaten record that Australia boast at the ground. But according to Alastair Cook, the prospect of making history is over-riding all other emotions within the squad.England were soundly thrashed on their last two visits to the Gabba, in 2002-03 and again four years ago at the start of their infamous whitewash tour, and their last victory came in the opening match of their triumphant trip in 1986-87, when Ian Botham rolled back the years with his 14th and final Test century, a rollicking 138 that set the tone for the series. Without predicting a repeat of such fireworks, Cook was adamant that they would continue playing with the liberated mindsets that have characterised the early weeks of this latest tour.”Everything is really good in the camp,” said Cook. “What’s gone before doesn’t count for anything, but the Test series is why we’re here, and we were very excited walking into the stadium. I walked in with Broady [Stuart Broad] and Swanny [Graeme Swann], who hadn’t been here before, and they had massive smiles on their faces while looking around. As an English player coming to play the Ashes in Australia, this is a very exciting place to be at the moment.”The unmistakeable buzz in the England camp is a far cry from the emotions that dominated on their last trip to the Gabba four years ago. Cook was one of six members of England’s likely starting XI who played in that opening fixture, but his scores of 11 and 43 paled in comparison to the mighty 196 with which Ricky Ponting set up Australia’s 277-run victory. Nevertheless, he feels that the lessons learned from that trouncing will stand the side in good stead this time around.”I’d played nine Tests then, I’ve got 60 under my belt now, so I’ve experienced the highs and the lows, and I’ve seen a lot more cricket,” said Cook. “I feel as though I’m more complete and understand what I have to do to score runs, but obviously the challenge of having that experience is using it in the right way.”It’s nice walking into the ground knowing what it looks like, but again the excitement for Swanny and Broady is all about the unexpected. Australia have a great record here but it’s another challenge we have to overcome and that excites us. We have a chance to do something very special.”It will be exciting and nervewracking on the bus journey to the ground, because it’s obviously a big series, but we’ve talked about not getting too emotional about how we play. We just want all our focus to be on our cricket skills, whether we bowl, or are in the field, or we bat. We need to try to take the emotion out. It will be there, but we’re all experienced players and we’ll have to handle it again.”Cook’s personal form worries were lifted as soon as he scored a cathartic century in England’s second warm-up game in Adelaide, and while he insisted that all such warm-up runs would count for nothing once the real action gets underway, the wider sense of contentment permeating the squad is invaluable. “We set our goals at the beginning of that three-week period,” he said, “and to win two games out of three was very important.”Cook knows he still has a point to prove against Australia, however, given that he averages 26.21 in ten Tests against them, compared to an overall Test average of 42.78. “I can’t hide behind the facts of that statistic but it doesn’t bring any more pressure to it,” he said. “There’s enough already just walking out to open for England in an Ashes series. I’m looking forward to getting those runs behind me, and improving my record against Australia.”A green and bouncy surface is in prospect after a summer of uncharacteristic rainfall, and Australia’s quickest bowler, Mitchell Johnson, has already declared his intention to test England’s openers, not least the captain Andrew Strauss, with a diet of short balls. Cook, however, insisted he was unfazed at the prospect, adding that England have had plenty practice on lively wickets in recent times.”It’s an area we’ve discussed,” he said. “The wicket was quite quick two days ago [in a Twenty20 match at the Gabba], and we practised in Perth for a week and a half, thinking the conditions would be quite similar. But we’ve got a good record against genuine quick bowling, we done it before and our experience as a side is that we are happy with that. If they come hard at us, they come hard at us. We’ve got a good record at Old Trafford which is a quick wicket as well, and we’ve got players who can play the pace and the bounce well.”

I think what’s happened with this England side over the last 12 months is that everyone’s stood up to be counted in certain situations. And we’re going to need that over the next two monthsAlastair Cook

Despite the hype that has been building up all month, Cook made sure he adhered to the team ethic, laid out by the coach Andy Flower, by refusing to overstate the significance of the series. “It’s the toughest challenge because it’s the next challenge we’ve got,” he said. “We’re looking forward rather than looking back all the time, we always want to set new goals and create new history, and this is what the next challenge is.”Australia are a hugely competitive side every time they play, and with England coming in probably the biggest Test series there is, they don’t need any more motivation. They’ve got a great record here, they are going to be very proud of that, and it’s up to us to out-compete them over the next two months.”Five of England’s top six toured Australia four years ago, but only one of the frontline bowlers made that trip, and that man, James Anderson, did not enjoy the happiest of tours. Nevertheless, Cook insisted that every member of the team had the capability to rise to the occasion, regardless of whether they’d had prior experience of the conditions.”We’ve got 11 players who can win games of cricket for England,” he said. “Swanny’s been exceptional in the last 12 months, but he’s also been backed up by the three quicks and we’ve managed to score the runs as well. I think what’s happened with this England side over the last 12 months is that everyone’s stood up to be counted in certain situations. And we’re going to need that over the next two months.”

Aston Villa must seal Joe Aribo transfer

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard previously claimed that the current crop of players in his squad are fighting for their futures at the Midlands club.

With the upcoming summer transfer window on the horizon, the Villans have shown in the past just how proactive they can be in the market when it comes to moving players in and out of the club.

Looking ahead to the summer, one figure that Gerrard may want to have in his side going forward should any of his current players fail to secure their future at Villa Park is Joe Aribo.

Having been mentioned with a move to the Midlands club during the previous January transfer window, the midfielder remained at Rangers instead of following his former manager to the Premier League.

One issue that the Villans have had at times this season is their ability to find the back of the net.

With four defeats on the bounce in their four previous league games, the Villa Park outfit have only scored two goals, conceding nine in the process.

Taking into account how Aribo has racked up a total of 25 goals and 25 assists in 141 appearances for the Scottish club across all competitions, this highlights just how capable he is of not only scoring goals but providing goals for his teammates.

Labelled as being “unplayable” by journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, the 25-year-old has racked up an average of 1.9 key passes per game in the SPFL this season, the joint-third highest of any player in Rangers’ squad.

This is also higher than any Villa player has managed to total in their latest Premier League campaign.

With an overall performance rating of 7.29/10 from WhoScored, the midfielder is currently the third-highest rated player in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, which would make him the highest-rated player at Villa by the same metric.

The £45k-per-week midfielder has also shown his playmaking talents in the Europa League as well by delivering three assists in 12 appearances.

Moving forward, with the summer window in mind, Johan Lange should definitely consider launching a move for the Nigerian, who Gerrard would surely love to have at his disposal again.

However, with previous reports claiming that fellow Premier League club Crystal Palace are eyeing up a £10m move for the midfield talent this summer, the Villans may have to be ruthless if they want to reunite Aribo with his former manager.
